with all my other apps and processes.

  Which seems to shwo that the X socket simply isn't responding, so the
  server is dead to useful activity.
  
  hupping the X process doesn't help. restarting gdm (and thus X) makes
  the display fill with random stuff (lots of little tiles of X stuff) but
  the keyboard is still dead. Only rebooting the machine gets you back to
  a useful state.

So, having upgraded to natty I find the nouveau-death problem is just as
bad as before. It crashes 3 times yesterday. The current state is that I
rebooted the machine and the graphics card is still messed up and just
showing a few random stripy bars. It's quite impressive that this
breakage can survive a 'hold the power button down reboot' cycle (It
doesn't always - it may be to do with waiting long enough after power
down before restart).

I can see no pattern at all to when it stops working - I may just be
typing in a term, or browsing, or even doing nothing.

I guess it would be worth trying an upstream latest driver, although
2.6.38.8 sounds fairly current to me.

Hi, have you had a chance to test if this bug is still present in natty?

If it does (and if you're the original reporter), please boot into natty
and run the command:

  apport-collect bug-number

which will update the bug with fresh logs and tag the bug as affecting
natty.  (It is best to run this right after reproducing the problem.)
