[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 803992] Re: Natty update introduced crasher in xorg

2012-03-13 Thread Akshat Aranya
This is happening for me with autologin enabled for oneiric. I had to
switch from lightdm to gdm because lightdm causes another bug that makes
my system run at 100% CPU, but autologin with gdm has this problem.

gdm-simple-slave[1220]: CRITICAL: gdm_session_direct_get_username:
assertion `session != NULL' failed

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 803992] Re: Natty update introduced crasher in xorg

2012-03-13 Thread Akshat Aranya
GDM has a bugfix by Robert Ancell:

Description: Don't autologin if using ecryptfs - if you do then the home
directory is empty as you need the password entered via PAM to decrypt it.
This is not a perfect solution as the home directory may not be mounted yet.
Author: Robert Ancell robert.anc...@canonical.com
Bug: http://launchpad.net/bugs/284443

This is probably the culprit, because it causes an extra call to
gdm_session_direct_get_username() which wasn't there earlier.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 803992] Re: Natty update introduced crasher in xorg

2011-11-26 Thread Andreseso
I just set Auto login to on for my account and Oneiric did not start. My
PC stopped on the Checking Battery State screen and gdm did not load.
I searched and searched until I finally looked in syslog and saw the
gdm_session_direct_get_username text. Through google I stumbled onto
this thread.

I was able to boot using startx. Luckily Gnome Do started and I was able
to get into the User Account app where I disabled autologin.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 803992] Re: Natty update introduced crasher in xorg

2011-11-08 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hey rogz,

You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and
doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric
is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade
and re-test if this issue is still present there.

If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting
the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release
is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll
close it.)

If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll
get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but
your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 803992] Re: Natty update introduced crasher in xorg

2011-07-20 Thread Frans
no source code analysis.
Otherwise I would have probably come up with a fix.
At some point I suspected that my session type was wrong, but since I used
autologon I could not change it to test it.
Therefore I turned autologon off and noticed that things started to work.

Sometimes it is just that simple.

BTW I still sometimes get Oh no something has gone wrong; although ubuntu
does not have auto logon, gnome still has this.
If I get that clicking on logout will give me the gnome login screen again, it
will still autologin and then things go ok.

I suspect this is a startup timing related issue, probalby between gnome and
X11.
If it matters, I have an i7-2600 with a hard disk (no ssd).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 803992] Re: Natty update introduced crasher in xorg

2011-07-17 Thread Frans
I had the very same problem (CRITICAL: gdm_session_direct_get_username:
assertion `session != NULL' failed) in syslog, startx works), only the
line number in the message was different.

I found that my problem was caused by using autologin.
As a workaround I went to administration/user accounts and put the autologin
off for my account
After that a reboot brought be to the gdm sesssion selection screen. Now I can
specify the session to start and gnome classic does work for me (didn't try the
others).

You might get a message the first reboot that gnome failed or so.
Note that my gnome login screen is still on autologin; it is just uer
accounts/autologin that I turned off.
(btw turning it on again made the problem reappear, I hoped that after setting
a proper session things would work, but to no avail; guess it has to be kept
off for now).

Hope this helps for you guys too.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 803992] Re: Natty update introduced crasher in xorg

2011-07-05 Thread Roger Magnesved
Re-installing the GDM package did not improve the situation on my system. I
also tried the new GDM version from the PPA, 3.0.4-0ubuntu3~natty1, with no
luck.

Regards

2011/7/3 Jeremy Visser jer...@visser.name

I should mention that reverting GDM to version 2.32 from Natty, and then
re-upgrading to 3.0 seemed to partially fix this for me (except now the
login theme uses Ubuntu instead of GNOME 3 styles). I am not sure
whether just reinstalling the GDM 3.0 package would have fixed it as
 well.

As I'm facing the same issue: How did you revert back to the GDM version
2.32?

This also affects me. I'm using the GNOME 3 PPA with the NVIDIA binary
driver, and a system update around the same time also broke GDM.

For the record, X seems to work fine when launched from the command line
(and I run, for example, xterm), but GDM still does not show up.

I should mention that reverting GDM to version 2.32 from Natty, and then
re-upgrading to 3.0 seemed to partially fix this for me (except now the
login theme uses Ubuntu instead of GNOME 3 styles). I am not sure
whether just reinstalling the GDM 3.0 package would have fixed it as
well.
