2003-03-13 Thread Susan Zalenski
FYI
...just passing this information along. There are going to be over 1000 candlelight vigils on Sunday March 16, 7:00 p.m. all around the globe. The full email and website is in the message below. Locally, thereis a vigil behind Houston Hall and also one at Rittenhouse Square, among other locations around the city. You can also organize your own vigil, if you desire. http://www.globalvigil.org
I apologize in advance if I have used this listserv for purposes that offend disturb.
Susan

Please visit http://www.globalvigil.org and plan a candlelight vigil for peace in your area on Sunday, March 16 at 7 pm. MoveOn.org and the Win Without War coalition, together with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and many faith-based organizations, are calling this vigil, and we need your help.
Beginning in New Zealand, this will be a rolling wave of candlelight gatherings that will quickly cross the globe. It's up to you to make this happen. Today we are asking individuals, like you, to organize a vigil in each community. We're hoping that thousands of small groups around the world will be inspired to come together and stand for peace.
For more information about how to make this happen in your community and to join with millions of others around the globe, go to http://www.globalvigil.org
It's time for the world to come together in this moment of darkness and rekindle the light of reason -- and of hope. It's time to renew our commitment to building a positive world for our children.
With your help, we will see the first candlelight vigil to sweep around the globe on the evening of March 16th. Together, we will lead the nations of the world away from an unnecessary war and toward a peaceful and prosperous future.Do you Yahoo!?

[UC] Global Vigil for Peace on Sunday March 16th

2003-03-13 Thread University Lutheran Church of the Incarnation

MoveOn.org and the Win Without War coalition, together with Archbishop
Desmond Tutu and many faith-based organizations around the world, are
calling for a vigil to be held the night before President Bush seems
determined to declare war. Here in West Philadelphia, Tabernacle United
Church is organizing a vigil. The vigil will be held in Perelman
Quadrangle, behind Houston Hall (which is above 34th St. on Spruce)
on the Penn campus. It will be a 45 minute silent candlelight vigil
and people are asked to bring their own candles. We are hopeful that
other local churches might want to gather at their own locations and
process to the Quad. Tab. United and University Lutheran people will
gather at 37th and Chestnut and process to the Quad at 6:45pm.

The vigil will start in New Zealand and travel across the globe. In one
day there are already over 500 locations and Move On is currently swamped
with people organizing vigils in their area. It's time for the world to
come together in this moment of darkness
and rekindle the light of reason -- and of hope. It's time to renew our
commitment to building a positive world for our children.
With your help, we will see the first candlelight vigil to sweep around
the globe on the evening of March 16th. Together, we will
lead the nations of the world away from an unnecessary war and toward a
peaceful and prosperous future.
This is a key moment in history. Be a part of it. Go to:

[UC] PENN - did good for neighborhood athletes

2003-03-13 Thread Elizabeth F. Campion

The Palestra is the best forum for Basketball in the city.
The halls are lined with thoughtful exhibits which highlight the history
of college basketball in our region.
Most of us West Philly natives have fond memories of at least one High
School championship, surrounded by our teen peers. Some may even
remember Wilt Chamberlain's only true High School loss (to West Catholic)
at the Palestra in 1953(?).

Saturday, March 8, was an especially fun night.
PENN won an undivided IVY TITLE by beating Cornell.
Spectators spilled on to the court, the net was cut down, and Senior
Athletes (Cheer Leaders and Ball Players) were feted with noisy applause.

For one group of local kids in 5th-8th grades, this was a very special
night.
PENN's Athletic ticket office made a generous gift of tickets to the
Scholar - Athletes of St. Francis De Sales elementary school. Kids and
the volunteers and parents who support them were able to see a great game
and its exuberant finale. There may be no better incentive to kids to
play hard and work hard than to be rewarded with such a fun experience.
Several kids made promises to work toward High School and College Ball
Playing. The Volunteers and Parents were gifted with a reward of quality
time at a fun event with their charges.

The tickets arrived with no cover letter, so I don't know whom to thank,
but...
someone took the time to read my request
someone put the tickets in the mail, and
the kids and volunteers had a TERRIFIC time.

So, to the Athletes and Ticket Office Staff, we send a big Thank you!
I hope at least some of you are on the list, or that this is forwarded to
the people who work in the Ticket Office.

Best!
Liz
