[UC] Chimney relining question

2004-10-05 Thread Naomirie
hi all.
I've searched through the archives, so now I'm turning to the list. We need
to find another chimney relining person to come in and give us not just an
estimate, but advice re whether the chimney itself needs to be taken apart near
the roof line and rebuilt, or just lined with a steel liner, or something in
between.
We've had F. Lotierzo and Sons, T. Kada and Bob Hughes all come in; their
advice and estimates were so divergent that we feel like we need to talk to a 4th
person (I'd be happy if any two of them had similar advice.) Anyone else
that any of you have used? or heard good things about? Someone had recommended
Barnes, but we couldn't find a phone #, and Bocca never called back.
Thanks.
Naomi

Re: [UC] Chimney relining question

2004-10-05 Thread Stephen Fisher
There was a recent discussion regarding the lining of chimneys. I think
the concensus was that lining was the way to go and was probably now
adays code.

My chimney was recently taken apart at the roof line and rebuilt. There
is now a large slate cap over the chimney (they did a nice job) but I
still get water (lots of it) in my furnace vent (the liner is now
rusting). So, oddly enough I had the 3 mentioned chimney guys out to my
place to give me a recommendation on my chimney. All 3 also gave me
different answers. I find it odd that there's no concensus in the field
about what seem to be standard problems.

Eric Kassab (47/Baltimore plumber) recommended I call Andy McNally
(215/836-5330). I haven't dealt with it further but you might want to
call Andy.

Good luck,
Stephen

RE: [UC] The Great Pizza Eatoff

2004-10-05 Thread Katie Convery Diller
You guys are in luck - you can order online using
campusfood.com. there are several pizza places
that use it, including varsity. I ordered
allegro pizza once using the website, and it went
pretty smoothly. it might take a little longer
than calling directly, but you get the added
benefit of no human contact ;)

Well, we've really only been ordering from PJ's

the thickest crust, i believe, was pappa
john's. so it was all thin crust.
 i
sampled all of the pizza slices both hot and
 cold. i assume some others
probably did the same. in my copious notes, i
remarked at the state of the
cheese and crust both hot and cold.

What was odd was that we'd been ordering from
 papa johns, which turned out
to be the worst of the bunch. Price/value wise
I think we shall be using
Varsity, which is only several blocks away.

I also would like to know was it a thick
 versus thin pizza taste-off?

I am very partial to the Sicilian style pizza
I grew up with and LOVE
 Franco
and Luigi's in South Philly or Pica's on West
 Chester Pike in Upper Darby.
I try to take one home when I can.

No Sicilian pies were tested I take it, only
 Neapolitan-style, right?

[UC] Crime Map

2004-10-05 Thread John Ellingsworth
http://ellingsworth.org/crime/University_City.htm

This map shows the locations of various crimes throughout UCity from May
24, 2004 through September 26, 2004.  Some days the data is unavailable;
when it is, I will add it to the map.

You can view a csv file of the data used to create the map here:
http://ellingsworth.org/crime/summercrimes.csv

The incidents are highlighted based on date:
Black pushpin = September 2004
Green pushpin = August 2004
Blue pushpin = July 2004
Tan pushpin = June 2004
Red pushpin = May 2004

Some of the pushpins overlap, making it difficult to determine how many
crimes took place at that time; use the data file to get a precise answer.

You can mouseover or click a pushpin to see the type of crime; the info
will display in your url address bar and your status bar.

The information used to create the maps comes from the University of
Pennsylvania's Almanac Crime Statistics Index, which is based on
reporting by the UPPD the Philadelphia Police 18th District:
http://www.upenn.edu/almanac/crimes-index.html

I make no claims for the validity of their information or any information
portrayed in the map. In other words, don't count on it.

Good day.

Re: [UC] The odd behavior of my neighbors

In those two glorious years when the Flyers won the Stanley Cup (get out the
history books!), the kids took trash can lids to bang on and announce the
news to the neighborhood.

But, has anyone ever solved the mystery of the stolen lids?...
WHAT does one do with collections of stolen garbage can lids,

In suburbia rock fights. The lids make excellent shields. Not an event
  in
  which smart girls participate.

In Philadelphia trashmen used to throw them in the back of the truck
  with
the trash, so they did not have to waste time trying to put them back
  on the
  cans.

If the choices do not match your UPenn concept of how the world should
   work,
you can believe the wind blew them away.

 You're showing your age Craig ... :)

Who has metal trash-can lids today?

The plastic ones simply do not have either the hand-holds or robustness
 of
the old metal ones. A single sword blow can shatter them, especially in
 the
winter. (Although they do withstand paint-balls equally well, they just
don't have the same satisfying tink to inform your opponent that they
 missed.)

Which is also why the plastic lids don't make good sleds either.
 However,
that doesn't stop folks from trying.

However, the plastic lids do float on the breeze and make much more
 aerodynamic
and quieter Frisbees than the metal ones.

Which gets back to the fact that, since the trashmen were corrected
 from
throwing the lids in the truck, they simply drop them on the ground,
 where
they tend to land handle down (just like buttered toast) allowing them
 to
soar on their own, frequently on the breeze generated by the always
within the speed limit vehicles bopping up and down the streets.
