[UC] missing cat

2005-02-02 Thread Naomirie

Good morning to our neighbors:
It was probably inevitable that Charlie's gone missing.  Charlie is a soft grey, short haired, cat, about 1-1/2 years old, very long and fairly thin, although well fed and muscular, neutered although still very much the boy,  who we rescued last June.  Charlie never agreed to be an indoor only cat, to our chagrin, nor did he agree to wear a collar.  5 missing collars later we gave up. [We have a neighbor who swears she's seen the neighborhood cats helping each other get the collars off.]
He was last seen at 6:00 A.M. yesterday morning.  He likes to flirt with neighbors on Regent Square, play with dogs and romp in Clark Park.  If anyone has seen him, please e-mail me or call home at 215-222-4453, or at work at 215-955-2578.
Thanks much to one and all.

[UC] Reporting -- AGE ON THE LIST

Late returns continue to trickle in. Below are the current numbers. "Years in West Philly" includes Powelton. Note that not everyone who reported age gave number of years in the Hood. I've actually watched my dog take the collar off our cat. Shortly after
I put the collar back on the cat (it kept mysteriously coming off) I saw
the cat sitting perfectly still on the chair while the dog delicately
grabbed the collar and pulled it off the cat's head. It was quite
surprising.

Good luck,

[UC] Robbers assault man near hospital: three arrests

Robbers assault man near hospital
Police arrest three in connection with fourth incident of new year
By alanna kaufman
February 2, 2005

A 52-year-old employee of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania was assaulted and robbed early yesterday morning by several individuals near 34th and Walnut streets.

Penn Police arrested two males and one female -- all unaffiliated with the University -- around 4 a.m. yesterday in connection with the crime.

The incident marks the fourth robbery of a member of the Penn community in 2005.

Tamika Perry, 24, Mark Sadler, 19 and a 16-year-old male whose name police could not release were each charged with robbery, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, terroristic threats and criminal conspiracy.

The victim was walking alone when a tan Saturn approached him. Police said Perry was the driver, while Sadler and the teen exited the car and demanded that the victim give them his money. They began to punch and kick him and eventually knocked him to the ground.

As the assault occurred, a Penn escort van arrived at the scene and the driver began to yell at the robbers from his vehicle. The two men returned to the Saturn and drove west on Spruce Street.

The victim called the Penn Police and officers arrested the alleged assailants several moments later at 39th and Spruce streets. The victim positively identified all three.

Perry, Sadler and the teen will remain in custody until their preliminary hearing, scheduled for Feb. 10.

Perry had previously been arrested twice for receiving stolen cars, twice for drug possession and once for burglary.

While a dramatic reading is always an essential piece of any Dickens
birthday celebration, I was wondering who is going to sacrifice the
roosters at the foot of His statue this year?

Ceil Mann, Frank Chance and Nina Hope will perform dramatic readings
from the Victorian star author's novel _Nicholas Nickleby_ and other
writings. To set the mood, period music will be presented by Susan
Watts & Friends, a brass band, courtesy of Crossroads Music of the
Calvary Center for Culture and Community.

Quite a few people from the list, surprisingly.

They have 4 lanes in the front and 8 in the rear.

The probability is that the only thing that will make money is the
restaurant, simply because they only have 12 lanes. (But then that is
to be expected.)

I think they have 6 or 8 pool tables, ... didn't count them.

The restaurant will have a typical "burger and frys" type menu (think
Bennegians, Chilies, TGIF Friday's, Copa, etc.) aimed at the "Student
date crowd." Signs up for Bass on tap, and I forget what else.

They have a second floor area that will have tables setup for "bowling
parties" (kid birthdays, fraternity, sorority, etc.)

The decor is interesting -- reminded me of my many visits to Edmund
Scientific back in the 60s when we put on "light shows" ...
"psychedelic" projections on the walls and floor, constantly moving,
changing (err ... morphing in today's terminology).

Personally, I found the neatest thing to be the way they have morphed
the typical "brew pub" glass windows around the pinsetters! You can
watch how those pins magically get set from a series of wrap-around
windows. (Makes it easy to see how the gnomes do it!)

The gear is all brand new AMF stuff, with electronic score-keepers, and
ordering screens.

They have a pretty hefty sound system and, what with the lighting and
all of the open space, could easily hold some pretty decent raves there
... probably could also handle live music without trying too hard,
although it's still warehouse acoustics in general (highly reflective
walls and floors, but with a 30 foot ceiling).

Staff is, surprise, 90% students ... all of them quite cute (whatever
your desire).

All in all, definitely a good place to bowl, and probably a reasonable
place to eat, but that remains to be seen. Good for "teen dates" but
not an intimate "tête-à-tête" -- go to a movie at the Bridge, then to
Strikes -- probably much cheaper than Marathon or 12.

No! If it's a CRT monitor, it has a few pounds of lead in it. If
it's a newer LCD monitor, it has mercury in it. Either way, if it
winds up in a landfill, it's bad news.

Recycling or donating your old monitor is the way to go. But, in
choosing a recycling company, it probably makes sense to ask what they
actually do with the monitor after you pay them to take it. Many
(most?) so-called recycling companies actually just ship the dangerous
parts of the monitor over to Guiyu, China or some other place where we
can hide our e-waste. See, for example:
