[UC] my new neighbor

2005-02-14 Thread Kyle Cassidy
Title: my new neighbor

so, the woman who bought the other side of my house finally moved in. christy and i met her out front yesterday and i recognized her as the woman i'd seen previously cleaning the front yard of some of the more filthy neighbors about six houses north.

about 7:15 this morning i heard her start up some power tools next door. she's been hammering and sawing ever since.

this is going to be nice.

(in other odd news, the people across the street "borrowed" my trash can again for three days, it vanished last week and we just found and recovered it. i need to put a GPS locater beacon on it so i can call On Star to get directions for the possee -- speaking of which, $50 reward for the first person to get a radio locater collar on the "locked my keys in my car" kid so we can track him in real time.)

He hit 44th & Larchwood with the identical patter on Thursday or Friday.
Loads of knowing references to USP, a local locksmith, etc. Needed precisely
$18.50! My, he is a busy beaver.

A young white man with a knit cap just came to my door
saying he lives two doors down and has locked his keys
in his car, his roommate is away, and so are the
neighbors he has met.

That's sort of what I suspected: and in a year or so, we'll see a study

Philadelphia are. "We presented ourselves as honest students, with
facts, figures, and exact amounts required, and not one resident was

you would know it was a scam!

The easy way to get him to depart quite rapidly is to offer to call UCD

the first time he came over he said he had to get this locksmith from olde city and i said "it's your lucky day, there's a locksmith a block from here, i'll walk over with you." and i grabbed my coat, perfectly willing to show him where the locksmith was, and he said "actually, my girlfriend is going to help me." and shot off like an arrow.

the second time, he said the locksmith was already there but they wouldn't get his wallet out until he gave them the money. when i told him he'd already tried to pull this story on me before, he said he just needed to call the locksmith to tell them he was on his way. i said i'd call for him and he made up a random number and ran off after i'd dialed it.

it would give me some personal satisfaction to put up warning posters. but then i hear it's illegal to staple things to phone polls.

Sorry, wrong mailing list. And yes, it is written in Geek. It's one I
use on technical lists where one is expected to provide certain "geek"
information with every post.

I also have another one which I use when communicating with the "Powers
that Be." That sig lists all of the appropriate pieces of information
which cause people's minds to blur when Mandrake or Dr. Strange
gesture.

And then, of course, there is the PGP encryption sig used when
communicating with my friends who always dress in black.

BTW, has anyone seen the Hetrodyne brothers this week? I have a message
from Agatha Clay. Something about her locket being stolen.

2005-02-14 Thread Marlevi

What I really cannot fathom is how a certain guy (not sure if it's this guy
or another one) has been pulling the same scam year in and year out without
apprehension (as far as I know) for about the past ten years.  He is
shortish with dark (black?)  "greased" hair, hard to tell his age but
maybe around 40,  and a sort of old and somewhat dated suit jacket.  I
saw him try to pull something similar on a student/neighbor's dad
as dad was helping her move her stuff one year.  He needed
money for something or other and said he would leave a computer monitor as
collateral.  Dad was very quick, introduced himself, shook scammer's hand,
and gave scammer his card.  Boy did scammer scoot out of there fast when he
looked at Dad's card and saw that Dad was a member of New Jersey's
finest, i.e. a cop.

About 2 weeks ago I had a  variation of this
scam pulled on me. The guy (white, beard, dark hair) lived down the street
(43rd), his car was stolen and he had to get to Roxborough to pick up his kids
from the baby sitter.

Has anyone encountered this fellow?

When I tried to access their web site http://www.talk.com/pennsylania

[UC] Appliance Dolly

2005-02-14 Thread Dan Myers
I know this may sound like a strange question, but does anybody have an
appliance dolly that I could borrow for an afternoon. I don't want to use a
regular one because I would probably damage my steps. I need to bring a
large refrigerator up 3 flights of steps and bring a smaller refrigerator
down 4 flights. (where does the term "flights" come from anyway? It's sort
of asking for a cup of sugar, but not really.

[UC] CAT STILL MISSING: UPDATE

2005-02-14 Thread Nicole Mcewan
I received an e-mail saying someone saw a found cat flyer near the Ritz
five. My husband went down there today and the flyer was already gone. Does
anyone know how long flyers are allowed before being removed?

Sapphire does have orange markings on her back and head that are only
visible in the winter when her coat thickens. If anyone has seen this flyer
please contact me.

If sounds like her -- who knows how she got to Society Hill. Trolley? El?
(Trying to keep a sense of humor.)
Thanks,
Nicole McEwan
Hi all,
Our cat Sapphire dissappeared Tuesday after walking my husband John to the
corner of 47th and Springfield.  She's an indoor/outdoor cat and a good
climber and mouser. She's been through three collars in the past two years
and currently has none.

I suspect someone has taken her in because she has never gone farther than
the corner before Tuesday.

We live at 1012 S. 47th in the middle of the block.
Our nine year old son Sam has already been through the deaths of our two
old-timers, Toodles and Mimi.  He will be devastated if we don't get her
back.

She has bright blue eyes and is all  white with light orange markings on her
ears and tail.

Please call 215-519-2950 if you have seen her.
Thanks,
Nicole McEwan
