[UC] Mixed Reviews for Radian Design

2008-02-26 Thread Frank

From today's DP:

(University Architect) Hollenberg, along with other Penn
administrators involved in the project, said they have yet to hear any
negative feedback. Uh-huh.

PS. I like the design itself but I wish it were somewhere else.

Penn and my grandmother (some wags might say I inherited this
characteristic) hear what they want to hear. Any relationship with this and
what people try
to tell them is purely coincidental.

I suspect they also claim not to have heard anything negative about the
giant Rubic's Cube they built at 40th Chestnut. Of course, people knocked
the
Guggenheim museum when it was first built and Frank Furness wasn't exactly
loved by one and all in his time. So the Hub, the Radian, the Huntsmann
building
at Wharton, the High Rises on Locust Walk, the Fresh Grocer/garage, etc may
yet go down as architectural icons of great genius.

Remember, you read it first here, on the popu-list

[UC] Business Privilege Tax reform hearing tomorrow

2008-02-26 Thread MLamond
http://www.philadelphiaforward.org/taxreform/movie

This is about the Philadelphia's Business Privilege Tax, an onerous burden on
all Philadelphia businesses, but especially on small businesses, which causes
our city to lose businesses and jobs.  It's a five-minute or so movie - it's
worth watching.  Philadelphia Forward is testifying tomorrow in City Council
on this topic.

2008-02-26 Thread SANDRA KNIGHT
Thank you for your post.

It was explained to me by an IT professional that it is all right to open an
unsolicited email; it is just dangerous to click on any hyperlinks that may be
in the unsolicited email. Your post reinforces that recommendation.

  From: Richard Conrad

A malicious email is going around that tries to trick people
into clicking on a web link, to supposedly retrieve a greeting card or a
postcard. It results in a virus.

It is worth reminding everyone to practice safe computing
and not click any links in unexpected email. It's so tempting to just click
the links to check them out. Malicious links in email are quite common,
  especially in phishing scams.
