[UC] Yard worker needed

2008-07-11 Thread Cappy Harrison
Hi all,
Does anyone know someone who would be interested in helping me with basic
yardwork, i.e. pulling weeds, laying weed fabric laying mulch?  I'm willing
to pay $10 - $20 per hour.  Having a car would be a plus but not vital.
I need someone to help out next weekend.
Thanks!

[UC] police in Clark Park

2008-07-11 Thread Jimmi Badger
When I rode by yesterday around 8.30, there were two cars already on the
playground and four more on the way.  An ambulance, sirens on, might also have
been going to the park or
might just have been passing by.

My housemate was walking through around the same time, and reported several
kids handcuffed on the ground.

There were also an awful lot of firetrucks out all over the neighborhood, but
that seemed to be unrelated.

Anyone know what was up?

[UC] free computer monitors

2008-07-11 Thread tim dunn
There are four or five free computer monitors on the sidewalk in front of 4717
Baltimore Ave.

They are of the large bulky variety, not the sleek and slim flat-screen variety.

We heard an ambulance on our block 45th Kingsessing at about that time.

You didn't see *anything*, Jimmi. Okay? University City has a VERY low
crime rate!

On the same topic: I ALSO didn't see a man being arrested for armed
robbery right outside of my house last night at 11:15pm. The dozen police
cars (marked, un-marked, and undercover) blocking Locust St. just west of
44th must've been a figment of my imagination. University City has barely
any crime at all.

By the way, the crime I just missed on Saturday night was Robbery:
Highway no weapon (mugging) according to EveryBlock.

They don't have yesterday's crimes posted yet but the list is still
interesting:

[UC] FOCP meeting -- north park revitalizationplan -- clarification of whose plan

2008-07-11 Thread Krfapt

Friends of Clark Park at the
Summer Membership Meeting
Wednesday, July 16

The latest revitalization plans for Park 'A'
(Baltimore to Chester Avenues) will be presented by the landscape
architects. This will include a Q A session.

Also on the agenda is a sneak peek of this years Shakespeare in the
Park, as well as a talk on recycling in Clark Park.

7:00pm Reception, 7:30pm Meeting
Griffith Hall, USP
(43rd St. former Kingsessing Ave.)

I got the above from FOCP. I wanted clarification on what was meant by the
latest revitalization plans -- since we've been seeing master plans (by
some name or other) for, what, five years now. They've all been handed down
from above (no, not that Above, I mean from the people who have: both a) an
anointed vision of what's best for us of the great unwashed, and b) a staff of
people who depend for their job security on sucking up to people who give
grant money for projects they don't understand).
Anyway, the The latest revitalization plans refer to a set of alternate
designs developed by a group that FOCP actually engaged. Apparently, there are
several variations on an overall urban park theme. And the FOCP committee
wants the folks who (get this, it's a really original idea) actually use the
park to be in on the act.
So, here's your chance.
Also, as I understand it, the discussion of the The latest revitalization
plans will be chaired by Matt Grubel, who hasn't already made up his mind and
who therefore won't run one of those famous foregone conclusion forums
starring the likes of UCD community managers, Penn Praxis, or the SHCA Board
of
Directors.

Remember, you read it first here, on the popu-list,
Al Krigman

Mark,

Your tone indicates serious frustration. If you've been subjected to the
literature of Penn Real Estate surrogates, UCD and Penn Praxis; your reaction
makes sense.

For decades Penn called West Philly, Clark Park etc, a killing field. That was
hooey.

Over the past decade, it graded its community partnerships with A++ report
cards using another pile of upscale hooey. Cleaner and safer; cleaner and
safer. Hooey, hooey, hooey!

Although many people on the list try to offer truthful stories and accounts, we
are constantly buried under piles of corporate propaganda best conceptualized
as ruthless corporate hooey. The truth comes in little bursts. The hooey
comes in super tankers and our tiny band of anointed neighbors gorge themselves
and revel in it.

Crime patterns vary. If you have been watching corporate/government policies
between the Penn hooey spins like me, you probably see how crime could be much
worse right now. I certainly expect it to increase with more violence. We have
been too busy with the sheer tonage of hooey and cousin hatred to notice the
idiocracy we have created.

While we have applauded our brand of upscale hooey, the real traumas that lead
to serious violence and an unhappy society have festered. Many could see that
beyond the piles and piles of hooey but are hoplessly in love with the riches
promised below every hooey pile. But reality is there beyond the hooey mountain.

Many of our brothers and sisters are married to what they see as gold crusted
hooey. Mark, I hope you will join us dreamers and imagine a world not covered
with any hooey at all! We are not alone!

Glenn
