Re: [UC] Boy Scouts recruiting for new members as the new School-year begins

2010-09-02 Thread Dan Widyono
Greetings Frank,

That's a very large leap and assumption of the motives of any parent who
enrolls their child, although I'm aware of the source of your concern. I
myself am displeased with the BSA's continuing stance against openly
supporting homosexuals as a first-class part of our society. However, I do
not begrudge those who are seeking to enrich all the other areas of their
boys' lives through a mostly healthy and social-outreach oriented group.

Perhaps when they finally accept as part of their "list of official
religions" any religion which openly promotes acceptance of homosexuals and
actively campaigns against groups which discriminate on this basis, will I
feel better about enrolling my son. Only then will he also feel that our
religion is not worse, or wrong, or not accepted by another group that he
admires.

Even now, though, I do applaud all the positive work that they accomplish.

Not being an expert, I googled for philadelphia recycling and got to our
government's page on single stream acceptables:

http://64.78.36.115/res_singlestream.asp

Bottom line, typically not pizza boxes because they're typically "soiled"
with grease. No milk or juice cartons because they're typically "soiled" and
lined. Yes glass. No styrofoam. Take plastic bags to your local chain
grocery store or IKEA where they accept them for recycling.

Dan W.

Metal:
Tin and aluminum cans, empty aerosol cans, empty paint cans

Glass:
Jars and bottles

Mixed Paper:
Newspaper, magazines, mail (junk and personal), phone books, food boxes
(remove plastic liner), computer paper, flyers, wrapping paper (no foil or
plastic wrap), soda and beer cartons (no food-soiled paper, please!)

Plastic Containers:
Recycle #1 and #2 plastics ONLY (mostly beverage and detergent
containers). These containers have narrow necks and wider bottoms. Check the
underside of each container for the number 1 or 2. All container lids are
recyclable and best if removed from containers.

Cardboard:
Empty and flattened

Good questions. I defer to others who understand more about university
administration, funding, etc. I do not extend any of my reasoning to the
rest of the groups you mentioned.

My view of a church is of course clouded by my particular faith community's
methodology (although I believe based on interactions that many other faith
communities in the area operate on much the same principles when it comes to
community building). Your Mileage May Vary.

Re: [UC] Pennsylvania Budget Woes

2009-10-05 Thread Dan Widyono
As a point for discussion, a church's "business" is to care for the
community. It does so primarily through outreach and service. As a church
it does these voluntarily (without requiring payment from the customers of
such services or products). The customers who "pay" a church are the
congregation of said church, which are not required to join or remain with
the church. The congregation *is* the church.

A cafe, as an example, provides a service and product for a fee.

To me that is the essential difference. I'm sure there are more, but for the
purpose of this particular question, I see that as being a difference as to
how a church provides a public service in a different way from a cafe.

Yours in community,
Dan W.

Re: [UC] New Korean/Japanese restaurant 44th & Spruce

2009-07-22 Thread Dan Widyono

Brief amateur review of our Wednesday dinner at Tampopo:

There wasn't a good selection of beverages (it would be nice to have more,
and less expensive, choices in stock), but it's BYOB, so do so! Ask up front
for tap water.

They have interesting seating options; small individual-size "benches" (no
back-rests) instead of chairs, and one long booth-style bench along two
walls. Several small 2-person tables that can be easily arranged (albeit
accompanied by painful screeching noise... they could use felt feet) to suit
larger parties.

I always used to get bi-bim-bob w/egg and beef, so that's what I got this
time, since I'm a creature of habit. It was just as good as I'd remembered
from Tampopo 1, which is to say, it tasted really good! My son gives it two
thumbs up as well; he got the steamed dumplings and chicken bowl and ate it
all up!

However, they could improve on the timing of multiple orders to the same
table. My dish was lukewarm whereas that of my dining partner was hot, and
they were delivered simultaneously. The two childrens' dishes were delivered
several minutes later even though they had ordered earlier, perhaps due to
the combination of food they chose.

We were provided with plastic-ware, paper napkins, and wooden chopsticks, and
put away our own trays (recycling, garbage, tray, dishes need to be
separated).

It's been really busy the nights I've walked by (as well as tonight when I
actually ate there). There was no sound system (yet?) so it wasn't noisy,
even though there were several people there; that in itself is a major draw
for me!!!

The staff was friendly and helpful, and the preparation area is partially
viewable.

Given the University population, I do hope they'll be able and willing to
stay open later than 9:30pm (maybe Friday and Saturday) to draw in more of
the late-night crowd, maybe during the Fall and Spring semesters.

$ to $$

Summary: it's a quality take-out place, but this location expanded to have
more seating available. I like having the option to sit in comfortably.

Privacy isn't always about authorities. It's also about keeping your
snooping neighbors from knowing everything about you, for example. Another
example of privacy that doesn't involve authorities, is that bad guys should
not have easy access to identifying information about myself.

A more fitting example for this discussion is that I don't want marketers to
pigeon-hole me using data they're collecting from the set-top box, thus
potentially altering the input I receive (via TV, internet, etc.) in a manner
that I can't easily control; i.e. I'd like to manage my environment, and so
do marketers.

[UC] FYI: Bob Edgars at First Unitarian Church This Sunday

2008-03-05 Thread Dan Widyono

Two events. 11am service with special guest Bob Edgar. 2pm public forum as
well.

Cheers and don't forget to register, especially if you wish to affect the
Pennsylvania Democratic Primary!

Dan W.

   Bob Edgar, Common Cause President

to Speak at Forum March 9

Bob Edgars, president and CEO of Common Cause (America's largest citizen
advocacy group) will be giving a topical sermon and speaking at a free public
forum after service. Here's how Common Cause are advertising this exciting
day...

Election news is focused now on the national candidates vying for party
nominations. But there also is a critical need for ongoing accountability of
officials after the elections and when the spotlight has dimmed. Openness in
government, in elections, the importance of diverse media and what ordinary
citizens can do will be addressed at a public forum on Sunday March 9, at 2
p.m. at First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., Philadelphia.

The First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia and Common Cause/Pennsylvania
will co-sponsor the free forum featuring Bob Edgar, president and CEO of
Common Cause, one of the nation's oldest and largest citizen advocacy
organizations. Barry Kauffman, executive director of Common Cause
Pennsylvania (CC/PA) will talk about the aggressive campaign that is being
waged in our state to open up government.

With over 12,000 members and affiliates, CC/PA currently is tackling three
foundational government reforms -- Open Records, Campaign Financing and
Redistricting --that affect the outcomes of all other hot-button issues
   about which Pennsylvanians are concerned.

Common Cause is a nonpartisan government watchdog organization with a
national network of citizen activists fighting to ensure that powerful
institutions in society--including government, corporations, and the news
media--serve the public interest, not narrow special interests.

John Gardner, the founder of Common Cause, once said "The things that
UNITE us as a people are more important than the things that divide us. No
particular interest group can prosper for long if the NATION is
   disintegrating."

"Could there be a more important time in U.S. history to pay attention to
these words?" said Rev. Nate Walker, First Unitarian Church minister.

Bob Edgar is well known to Philadelphians, having been born and raised in
the Philadelphia area, served as protestant chaplain at Drexel University,
elected as a Democratic Congressman from Republican-dominated Delaware
County in an amazing election in 1974. He served until 1987. He has
managed to combine religion, politics, public service and national
leadership in unique ways. He has been president of Claremont School of
Theology in California, and General Secretary of the National Council of
   Churches.

At the 11 a.m. First Unitarian Church morning service March 9, Bob Edgar,
an ordained Methodist minister, will give the sermon on the topic of
"Religion and Politics: Can they be partners for the public good?"

Re: [UC] About Martin Luther King Day

2008-01-21 Thread Dan Widyono

Good point: this day is indeed more than just about community service. My
query was instigated by my son's idea (he's six) to do something of service
today.

We attended church yesterday to discuss the reasoning behind celebrating
Dr. King's legacy. I hope, along with you, that people don't think community
service is the only reason for this day's being a holiday, but this is what
my family is doing this year on this day (not just this day, of course, but
because it's a federal holiday, we both have the day off from the standard
"requirements" of school and work).

I talk about racial injustice many times with my son, along with other kinds
of injustice (e.g. when we walk by the Womens Way murals on I think 21st
Street on the way to the Franklin Institute, I talk to him about why there's
a Womens Way and not a Mens Way). It's what I've come to learn and honor in
my church as it's brought up many times there throughout the year. It's
inevitable for it to be at the forefront of our attention given that we live
in Philadelphia (with such a strong diversity of races, among other social
differences: class, sexual preference, creed, etc.).

On Mon, Jan 21, 2008 at 08:05:29AM -0500, Wilma de Soto wrote:
> This is a serious day for me. Not a day of service.

I confess I don't fully understand how you don't equate giving community
service to "serious". I assume you aren't disassociating my particular
inquiry to the list with a lack of seriousness, but rather clarifying your
stance on labor rights as opposed to larger community service. If that's not
quite accurate, I'd appreciate a chance to better understand what you meant.

Since there isn't much that's formally/officially organized here (thanks
Anthony and Andrew -- given the bitter cold it does seem wisest to do
something indoors, for my son's sake), I'm taking my son to the Constitution
Center where we can learn more about Dr. King's legacy in connection with
this country's history.

> It has become that because powerful people wish to sweep under the rug the

> blacks to be treated equally under the law.

Wilma, I'm interested in what you have in mind regarding bringing renewed
awareness to the people of our extended neighborhood? It sounds like that
would be a good topic for today!

Me, I'm making sure the more generally applicable reasons and ideas behind
Dr. King's struggle don't die; currently I do this by speaking to the younger
generation and making sure they understand what's so important about racial
justice, understanding class inequities, tolerance of differing family
lifestyles, respecting other's religious beliefs, and other aspects which
would make life better and more just for more people.

Thanks for your awareness-raising post, and may all of Dr. King's dream
continue to grow true.

With kind and sincere regards,
Dan Widyono

P.S. Interesting tidbit regarding service on MLK, Jr. Day from Wikipedia:

"The national Martin Luther King Day of Service was started by former
Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Harris Wofford and Atlanta Congressman John Lewis,
who co-authored the King Holiday and Service Act. The federal legislation
challenges Americans to transform the King Holiday into a day of citizen
action through volunteer service in honor of Dr. King. The federal
legislation was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on August 23,
1994. Since 1996, the annual Greater Philadelphia King Day of Service has
been the largest event in the nation honoring Dr. King.[9]"

[UC] Parade?? and Halloween stores

2007-10-31 Thread Dan Widyono
I heard from another parent 4:30 in clark park. Look for the large throng of
children and parents. If you miss the start, run through the nearby streets
looking for the large throng of children and parents.

As for the halloween store, I don't know what "nearby" means since the poster
mentioned south street, but there's the big halloween store on Delaware
Ave. in South Philly. And of course KMart downtown and Walmart on Del Ave
and BJ's on Oregon, and I'm sure a bunch of others out Baltimore way
(Target).

I can see Al's concerns and your concerns as orthogonal, even though they
both involve the belgian blocks to a degree.

The quote you included from Al mentioned nothing about forcing cars to slow
down. You might wish to begin your argument with "I believe belgian blocks
help to slow down traffic, which is a cause for concern among many parents
and dog-owners alike." Framing your argument in this way (as an example),
gives the opportunity for people to respond with perhaps other ways of
mitigating traffic flow which do not involve belgian block.

Even though Al does a disservice to his discourse by calling people's
comlaints "wailing", he does appear to target two specific issues: the
current belgian blocks cause damage to motor vehicles, and the higher cost
associated with keeping the belgian blocks, which must be shared by Septa and
tax payers. (I am not stating these as facts, merely as Al's talking points)

It would be useful to either debate him on those points directly, or start a
new thread to discuss the mitigation of traffic flow, but it only confuses
the conversation when different issues are confounded.

Because I and my son use the park, I am concerned about safety in and around
the park. I personally do not think of the belgian blocks as safety
enhancements, but perhaps someone has statistics showing that they indeed
mitigate traffic. I hope there are other ways of slowing cars down that we
could perhaps implement alongside existing infrastructure (whether or not the
belgian blocks remain).

You have to watch the terms carefully, though. The second loan is likely to
be a balloon or ARM. You really should be comfortable with the math before
going this route, and/or be prepared to refi or pay off the second loan
within the allotted period (5/7/15 years are typical). The APR is likely to
be beneficial relative to your PMI monthly payments, however, but you should
check with each situation.

Re: [UC] NPR disses Philly

2007-01-28 Thread Dan Widyono

I was there, and really enjoyed it, but that's because I've loved PHC since
way back. There was a short portion where he was (in my opinion) really
trying to goad the audience into booing him a la sports fans booing at games.
It worked -- we booed him :) but everyone was laughing while doing it.

The part that felt tacky to me during that negative moment (brief as it was)
was mentioning the MOVE incident (not by name). But hey, I'm not a radio
show producer. Perhaps that gets more ratings.

There were lots of nice mentions about Philly. But I agree with Ross that he
focused too much on South Philly and Philly being a Blue Collar Town. He
mentioned a lot of firsts, but not ENIAC (WOO! Go nerds!) nor the Zoo nor
Bartram's nor Fairmount nor Woodland Cemetery, and I'm sure I'm missing a
million other firsts or fascinating facts about Philly.

I wouldn't complain about that normally, given that you only have so much
time during a live broadcast. But he had enough time to *repeat* some of the
more obvious items, I felt he could have not been redundant but rather fit in
more interesting sites.

First time in the Kimmel. Pretty cool place.

Terry was fun, Amos was interesting, Bluegrass was foot-stomping, and the
skits were enjoyable. Heck, the coat check was free!

Re: [UC] PM-302.3 Weeds My story.

2005-04-12 Thread Dan Widyono
For those concerned about future crabby neighbors:

Take a picture once a week of your house, with date proof (e.g. newspaper).
For anything that *might* be considered a weed, take closeup pictures, take
samples and have them dried and put in your legal scrapbook, include research
on the type of plant, etc. You might never need this kind of proof, but if
you end up getting a ticket for several months back, it'll be handy. Oh, and
measure all your non-flower plants to make sure they're below 10 inches tall.
Might as well take a picture of any tall-ish plants with the ruler next to
them.

Also: if the ticket "Badge Number" is 4 digits, a cop was called explicitly
to file a complaint about the "weeds". Also, if the department is 1-1, again
a cop wrote the ticket. If the "Badge Number" is 3 digits (unlikely for
weeds), it was the streets department noticing you had tall weeds.

The above (pictures, samples, ticket identifying information) is actual
advice given to me by the City when I fought my ticket (round one, I ended up
paying without appealing to a judge).

Dan W.

[UC] bike safety

2005-04-03 Thread Dan Widyono
I recall people talking about bike safety a few times previously on this
list. I found this link via some other online forum:

http://www.hurlburt.af.mil/basewide/sentinels/docs/cars.doc

It's a pragmatic approach to bike safety. Not a bible, but useful
information to take in if you're a biker and haven't given a thought about
bike safety (e.g. if you don't have head and rear lights).

Dennis Dunphy's crew did a great job in our basement, and point work on the
outside, and plastering work on our first floor inside walls. Sorry I don't
have his card on me right now. But since I'm not a mason and need some extra
cash, how about I do your masonry, you do HBW's plumbing, and... um... HBW

Amen. And yes, I mistook Bruce's comments to be general, forgetting that the
topic at hand was computing in _schools_. I'm still ambivalent about
computers in school, but being a computer guy myself, I'm not sure I'm
totally against it. Then again, I've never had 25 young 'uns to teach and
take turns on the computer, so I'm not sure how difficult it is to manage
computer time. Perhaps a separate computer lab where each class has X amount
of time during the day all scheduled ahead of time. That way the computers
always get used but aren't distractingly in the classroom the rest of the
time.

Bah humbug, Bruce. It's up to the parents to make sure that *if* they use a
computer, they are _also_ taught problem solving and other essential skills
at the same level expected as if they hadn't a computer. That's the whole
point of implying there are other effects like economic status and parental
involvement, in households with computers (in the article).

Your blanket statement "don't use computers until 10" is not only
impractical, it's also as misleading as "computers definitely help kids
learn". If you extended your statement, you'd have to add "no TV until 10",
"no video games until 10", etc. Computers don't halt learning, uncontrolled
usage and inappropriate limits halt learning.

As always, *it's ultimately up to the parents*.

Dan W. whose 4-yr old has a (junk-from-work, non-internet-connected)
computer and just like TV there are rules and limits for using it.

Re: [UC] Local Notary?

2005-03-14 Thread Dan Widyono
Not quite what you were asking, but I was in a very sticky situation and
needed a notary IMMEDIATELY (i.e. that very evening). Called a gentleman
(forgot his name since it was a long time ago), he's in the yellow pages
listed as "7 days, 24 hours, fast service". It was pouring rain that
evening, yet he came in from the suburbs at 10PM and we were able to notarize
the effects. I *believe* it was $30, which of course is a lot relative to
most NP's but considering I needed it done IMMEDIATELY and he traveled and
nobody else was open, that was rather reasonable. Neighbors and friends of
mine also used him, and they were pleased with the "please come to where WE
are to notarize something NOW" service.

I recall only the 24/7 listing and the fact that it was boxed, and when I
look today in the yellow pages the only listing I see that matches is
215-969-4750 ("Have notary will travel").

He was very nice if that matters (it sure does to me in anxiety provoking
situations when one needs something done IMMEDIATELY), and I would heartily
recommend him.

By the by, I just *happened* to glance and spot "Alston's Insurance & Auto
Tags" at 5101 Baltimore. No idea of their quality or service and this is in
NO WAY a recommendation, I'm just saying, since I had the yellow pages open
already. 215-748-7272.

Re: [UC] Fw: [phillyblocks] Weapons of Mass Destruction Found in Philadelphia...

>From what little I know (and that is precious little), I believe zoning is
very specific on the topic of DANCING. If you allow DANCING _and_ ALCOHOL,
you may be classified as an entirely different establishment, and therefore
it would require different (of course more difficult to obtain) zoning
approval. I'm talking about the type of establishment that I and many
families I know don't want in our back yard (but rather on Delaware Avenue
which is not a primarily residential area).

I'm sure you can still bust a move. It just won't be officially supported by
the establishment, nor can it generate revenue. So don't start asking people
to insert dollar bills in your underwear. And don't take pictures of you
or anyone else dancing in their establishment.

Re: [UC] Another of Penn's "vetted" shops in high-cost space goes kablooie

2004-09-14 Thread Dan Widyono
Huh. In my orientation in '90 I was never informed that Center City was the
"Badlands". I got held up at gunpoint in the lobby of my 22nd & Spruce
apartment in '95. Go figure. At least we didn't have trash piling up in the
back or random gunfights next door or... cats pretending they're your dearest
friend when really they're plotting to take over the world...

Student authors are there to learn, as well. You can teach this one to do
more thorough research by sending a letter to the editor. Form is here:

or call Haley Shapley, Managing Editor, 215-898-6585

I agree that they should "know more" about the neighborhood west of 40th St.,
and expose it to the students who seem to be living in said neighborhood in
larger quantities as time goes on (for the past 14 years at least).

[UC] drain rooter

2004-09-11 Thread Dan Widyono
Does anyone have a drain rooter I could borrow for a day? I've tried a small
manual kind that I use successfully in toilet and tub drains, but this is a
larger problem: an outdoor drain that is fed by a downspout. I'm looking for
some snake-like type that could be attached to a drill, and I'd need to
borrow a corded drill as well :) (my battery-powered drill will likely die
quickly). Or, an all-in-one machine would do.

Regards,
Dan W.

I lied, they're on the west side of 42nd between regent and chester, just
lying on the ground. Pick 'em up any time and day (as long as they're still
around). Although the earlier the better chance they haven't dried out.

[UC] free ornamental grass

2004-08-28 Thread Dan Widyono
I'm about to dig out several (10?) bundles of ornamental grass (I believe
it's Fountain Grass). We got donation bundles from a neighbor a couple of
years ago but now we have decided we don't want these in the front garden.
Pick 'em up tonight at the earliest at the corner of 42nd and Regent Square.

You're such a depressing entity on this list, even if you do bring some
useful links once in a while. What a negative attitude you have, and you
don't even know the institution or the people. There's more to community
building than raising money or renting apartments.

Disappointed,

Yes, it's just redundant posters being needlessly repetitive, with similar
but slightly different wording. Pretty much anything goes.
