[UC] UCAL Annual Auction and Preview Dinner

2010-05-07 Thread Gail Massey

Friends and neighbors,

Saturday night, May 15, is a night of fun as the the University City
Arts League holds its annual auction at the University of the
Science's Wilson Student Center. Doors open at 7 p.m. for both the
silent and live auction. The live auction begins at 8 p.m.

Admission is $10, and tickets may be bought at the door. If you want
to dine before you bid, come by at 6 p.m. for a great dinner catered
by former Rx owner, Greg Salisbury. Dinner and auction admission is
$40. The dinner requires a reservation

Great stuff is up for bid, including a tour and lunch for four at the
historic Union League (see Lincoln's bloody undershirt and a signed
copy of the Emancipation Proclamation), a pump organ from the Estey
Organ Co., a behind-the scenes tour of the Inquirer, including
attendance at the morning news meeting as the guest of editor William
K. Marimow, free vacation housing for a week in Orlando or, if you
prefer the mountains of Pennsylvania, a lovely house in Eagles Mere.

Plus rugs of all sizes, restaurant certificates, children's items,
pottery and much, much more.

The auction is the major fund raiser for the non-profit Arts League,
which holds classes in everything from painting to pilates to
pottery. The Arts League is also sponsoring a summer camp beginning
July 5. The auction is a great way to provide a stimulus to a
worthwhile organization, discover a bargain and have some fun as well.

For information, call the Arts League 215-382-7811, email
i...@ucartsleague.org or just stop by.

[UC] smoke detector scam?

2010-03-17 Thread Gail Massey
Although the fire department does have a smoke detector program,
there may be someone trying to case houses. Please see the 2
conversations below from our block listserve.

1. Perhaps this is not necessary (better safe than sorry though),
but we had a strange occurrence at our house. Sunday, around noon, a
man knocked at our door (4900 block of Cedar). He did not introduce
himself and asked whether our smoke detectors were working. Once we
told him yes, they are working, he turned around and walked away, and
we noticed he didn't walk up to our neighbors.

We thought it a bit unusual, and perhaps it was nothing more than
that, but I wanted to put it out there since the fire department
would have had an obvious uniform and they usually make an initial
phone call. Did anyone else experience this visitor over the
weekend? He looked to be 5'6'' ish, light-skinned African-American
man, early thirties, medium build, and close-cut hair. He wore an
all dark-blue uniform with a Ray name badge, and carried a
walkie-talkie.

2. I spoke to the fire department, and they said this guy was not
with them. They said that the fire department was not checking houses
on our block this weekend, and that any legitimate person would
clearly say that he or she is from the fire department and show ID.

would welcome more neighbors joining us. It is Pilates-based

essential.

[UC-Announce] Fwd: Road Closures and Activities at Pennsylvania Hall Sunday March 4, 2007

2007-02-26 Thread Gail Massey

From: School of Medicine Announcements [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Road Closures and Activities at Pennsylvania Hall Sunday
March 4, 2007

To the School of Medicine community:

At approximately 6:50am on Sunday March 4, 2007, the structural
shell and roof of Pennsylvania Hall is scheduled for implosion. Per
City of Philadelphia guidelines, Controlled Demolition, Inc advises
all to avoid this area, and if possible to remain indoors during the
event.

Philadelphia Police will temporarily redirect local traffic before
and after this event. Civic Center Boulevard will be closed between
Convention Avenue and University Avenue. University Avenue will be
closed between Woodland Avenue and Greys Ferry. Road closure
durations may vary, with Civic Center Boulevard closed approximately
one hour prior to the event and up to three hours after the event.
Bus and regional rail schedules may be delayed.

The University Avenue Garage, Lot #51, will be inaccessible during
this period. All permit parkers in Lot #51 are to relocate to Lot
#44, Curie Boulevard, effective 7:00am Saturday March 3, 2007
through 4:00pm Sunday March 4, 2007 when Lot #51 reopens.

The demolition contractor advises that airborne noise will be
similar to that of a thunderstorm; and that the transient mean peak
ground borne vibration is estimated to be .2 inches per second at
School of Medicine facilities. The duration of the overall event is
anticipated to last approximately ten seconds with a mean peak
vibration lasting two seconds or less.

[UC] 46th and Baltimore

2007-01-31 Thread Gail Massey
I am posting this for my son who has lived on the 4900 block of Cedar
all his life.

Hello West Philians,

I've started a Flickr group 46th and Baltimore
http://www.flickr.com/groups/46baltimore/
This group is intended to be a collection of photos of the area
around 46th and Baltimore Ave. in West Philadelphia. I'm hoping that
there are alot of photos out there of this area that people want to
share in a collective archive.

I am a thesis student at Temple University's Architecture Program.
The site for my thesis project is the old West Coast Video on the
corner of 46th and Baltimore Avenue. I want to see how other people
view the site, and by the site I don't mean just the existing
building, but the area surrounding it. As time goes on I'll provide
more information on the topic I'm working with, but I want to first
see what comes in without knowledge of what I'm working on.

Thanks for your photos (and comments)!

Alan Massey

::IMPORTANT::

Please only post photos of the area around 46th and Baltimore. That
means a photo of 53 and Baltimore is cool, 40th and Walnut also cool
, but 30th street Station is too far.

Please give specific locations of where the photo is taken, and a
brief description of the subject, etc.

By posting photos I hope that you are also agreeing to allow me to
use these photos for my project. I will credit all photos I use, and
notify the photographer.

We have an apartment on the 4900 block of Cedar Ave. For years it
has been occupied by an ever changing group of Dutch college students
who spend 9 months to a year doing research in labs at Penn. Two or
3 people can comfortably occupy the space, but from June through
August, Lilli will be by herself. It is fully furnished, and the rent
is reasonable (because it is fun to host these students). If you
know of anyone who might need a place to live for any or all of this
time, please reply to both of us. Her email is [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thank you.

Through Winter Harvest you and your household can order foods from

winter holidays.

Winter Harvest is a
way for you to get the high quality foods and help support small
family farms and businesses in the region.

Winter Harvest's December deadline for ordering is November 27,
5 pm.*

The categories of
foods available are
