Re: [UC] Abstract, marijuana use in methadone pts
Makes a lot of sense. Jo Ann Sent from my iPhone On Oct 5, 2014, at 10:54 AM, Glenn moyer glen...@earthlink.net wrote: Here is an abstract for some important research confirming something about the medicine, marijuana, many of us in behavioral health research have strongly suspected for a long time. Because marijuana policy, research, and the overall war on drugs has recently had a burst of informed truth telling, which has broken through corporate media to pop culture, some Americans might be able to have a broader discussion of important truths, as well as consider the need for a paradigm shift in the priorities of behavioral health care research. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23795873 As you see, the implication of this research is that a therapeutic benefit of marijuana use is noted in opiate addicted methadone maintenance patients during their initial stabilization period on the opiate substitution medication. Unfortunately, this also indicates a serious flaw in current treatment policies for compliance in methadone treatment. Many people, including me, have always known that policies prohibiting marijuana presence in drug toxicology screening, which then interferes with or denies treatment to individuals with serious chemical addictions or PTSD, etc., were terribly harming individuals and society. Now, we have preliminary indications that the plant based intervention, marijuana, might improve treatment outcomes during stabilization of opiate addicted individuals. I strongly believe this is correct. Here is the kicker. Because of my years of experience collecting histories and data from a range of patients and disenfranchised populations, I know that research should be conducted to see if marijuana provides benefit, as an ancillary treatment, to patients with many other chemical addictions such as cigarettes, alcohol, and cocaine! Neighbors, academia is very screwed up these days, as I've commented before. I've talked about the immense power of corporations at directing priorities of almost all research, but I've never talked about the strict militaristic hierarchy at research institututions, or the inequality of power and resources from those at the top of the academic/industrial caste to the bottom of the system. For brevity, front line workers often gain much deeper understanding of populations of people than the powerful few, who have learned to claim that data, is some type of divine force that only they can understand. That's how we get absurd myths about what can and cannot work to help disenfranchised people find balance in their lives. Like public school teachers, front line workers in many fields of research never get a platform to tell the truth nor to advance future research! With most chemical addictions, a period of stabilization during withdrawl from the substance, is a precarious time for relapse with patients experiencing severe cravings. Ancillary treatments are often provided in order to reduce severity of withdrawl. Of course, these are generally highly profitable chemical interventions in our for profit health system. Acupuncture has been shown by many to improve substance abuse treatment outcomes by allowing the patient to get much better results in primary treatment because of the reductions in cravings and an increased ability to focus on cognitive strategies or treatments. Of course, the medical industry spends lavishly to build a case to discredit the efficacy of acupuncture, like they did for 50 years of scientific research on marijuana! I strongly believe that marijuana has a similar potential, as an important ancillary treatment, due to my years of collecting data and histories from an assortment of patients. Marijuana is generally known, as a self treatment or folk remedy, for all sorts of cravings and distress. So, from my experiences, marijuana could be used as an ancillary treatment to calm the mind and reduce cravings, coupled with the best cognitive treatments to benefit stabilization during withdrawl and improve treatment compliance and treatment. Our broken system of behavioral health care fails tremendously in matching appropriate comprehensive treatment to allow those with problems to live happy high functioning lives. There is an over-dependence on cognitive behavioral strategies (which work well in the short term, if delivered responsibly and compassionately), but due to neoliberal ideology, working class people must be quickly fixed and thrown back into a broken society, before he or she can develop supports or recover the inner strength necessary for total recovery, as those who study and live by the dharma (the ultimate path to recover from all American addictions). If I could design a pilot intervention to be studied, I would use the plant based medicine coupled with a small period

Someone like that approached me at the Checkers on Market St. a month or more ago. She runs "the Philly Pack" (Walking and training) and also the Philly Pack Pet Shop on Greys Ferry Ave. With all the lost dogs in the neighborhood lately, I thought this might help.===Recently, I have been hearing of lost dogs almost every week. I thought I would share some useful tactics in order to recover your dog quickly. I have been working with dogs for many years, and the advice I'm sharing is the result of my experience. Rule of thumb...,NEVER CHASE YOUR DOG.1. BREATHE - remain calm, don't let your adrenaline get the best of you. The dog will surely respond to panic by running. Instantly, tell yourself not to panic.2. Call the dog's name in a very calm, but sweet voice. This should cause your dog to stop and look at you.3. Get down low with your body slightly turned. This is an invitation for the dog to come to you. Give your thigh a tap, and wait. Turning your body is less daunting to a dog. Even your own dog could feel threatened in this situation.4. When the dog comes to you, calmly praisethe dog for coming to you, as you still need to put on the collar and leash. Too much excitement could result in the dog becoming excited, and attempting to get you to chase them. Do not reprimand the dog. Reward the dog with affection for following your last request. 5. Learn from your mistake; keep leashes on, and collars snug at the widest part of the head to insure that your dog can not slip their collar in the future. Dogs belong on leash, especially in the city. If you insist on allowing your dog to be off leash in an open area that is not enclosed, let your dog drag the leash. It can only help you in recovering your best friend.6. Make sure you dog is wearing ID with your current information, and a back up number on the ID tag, just in case. Alternative step, if the dog does not come to you, but stops when you call them.4. Slowly walk toward your dog, with your body slightly turned. If you head directly toward the dog, you may spook them and cause them to run, Once again, even your own dog could feel threatened in this situation. Or, they could see this as a game, especially if you approach too quickly. Once again..., NEVER EVER CHASE YOUR DOG, THEY WILL ALWAYS RUN.On a side note; we highly recommend using Martingale Collars. They are non-slip collars, but you have to make sure they are snug going over the widest part of your dog's head. If the loop rings touch when the dog pulls, the collar is too big and your dog can easily slip out of the collar. We recommend that there be at least an inch between the loops. Also, all cloth martingale collars tend to stretch, so make sure you regularly check that the collar is properly adjusted.
Re: [UC] Rape at Gunpoint, 900 block of 48th St., 10 pm Tuesday night
Joe, I agree with all that you said. To add to that, over the years I realized that so much of young people's behavior in school and in the neighborhoods is in reaction to fear. Some neighborhoods, and unfortunately often schools, are so dangerous that a top priority of growing up is developing some way to cope with constant fear. Many believe, perhaps correctly, that they must project a tough, strong image to stay safe. Unfortunately, some extend that to victimizing and terrorizing others to maintain that appearance. We must somehow figure out how to make our schools and our streets safe so our young people can flourish. I don't have the answers. It's like the argument for not putting seat belts in cars: they might make the customer feel that driving is unsafe. Many in the neighborhood are long-time, resident home-owners, and need to do something immediately to protect their homes and families. There is a difference between treating the symptom and curing the disease. The surge in personal crime may be caused by inequality, but the immediate and often life-threatening symptom needs to be dealt with immediately. Most of the young men and women involved in these crimes are extremely dangerous; partly, because they have no sense of what the consequences are for their actions. I don't think it's just economics: I think that there is a glorification of the gun/gangster culture that has been commod-ified by the entertainment industry and patronized by liberal society as being cool. Having worked with young homeless people, the biggest challenge is the attitude that prevails among them, and is largely nihilistic. At a graduation in the shelter, many of the graduates were asked to select a favorite saying or slogan to live by. Most chose: It is what it is!. No sense of future, goals. We in the social services thought it was cute. What seems cute to me - with a work history and two degrees - is disastrous for someone who has neither. The crime needs to be dealt with swiftly and forcefully; the larger issue needs to be worked on as well, but it is a complex situation that has many facets - gun control, failing schools, no jobs, addiction, no parenting and the marketing of violent nihilism as a life style - set us all up for a long haul to change these destructive patterns. As I recall, supports were withdrawn from town watch because high income consumers would be made cleaner and safer through the gentrification. If residents became dependent on and obedient to the new saviors, there was supposedly no reason for town watch anymore than the great culture that we created ourselves. Crime is correlated to income inequality and not a simple lack of material possessions. I'm sure that increases in chronic stress, desperation, and powerlessness would also predict increased crime. The gentrification solutions that have been shoved down our throats are not only fake, but actually increase the likelihood of violent senseless crime. Frankly, I'm surprised that there is not more crime, but we've known for a long time that learned helplessness defines the lives of most people in third world America. But violent crime shouldn't be surprising anyone in our violent immoral society. Joe, the work you are doing with a youth chess club is wonderful, and is one small example of projects that make society a safer place. [UC] tree questions
I have a young mimosa tree in my back yard that seems to have spontaneously died last summer. It had grown from a volunteer and was about three stories tall. I really enjoyed it from my back porch and third floor window. Suddenly it dropped all its leaves and this year has failed to get leaves, so I guess it is gone. Does anyone have any ideas what may have happened? Although it's much smaller than the other older trees in our back yards, it's too tall and heavy for us to take down ourselves. Can anyone recommend someone who will do the job safely and not charge a bundle? Also, does anyone have tree pole pruners for loan. Many years ago when I took tree tenders training we were given sets of tools. But, unfortunately, I loaned mine to someone who never appeared again. Now we have some overgrown shrubs that could definitely benefit from some cutting back. I actually wouldn't mind buying a pole pruner if anyone has a recommendation for a good one. Thanks, Jo Ann

Jo Ann From: Jo Ann Fishburn fishbur...@yahoo.com To: UC univcity@list.purple.com Sent: Sat, May 21, 2011 6:25:13 PM Subject: [UC] tree questions I have a young mimosa tree in my back yard that seems to have spontaneously died last summer.
[UC] pharmacies
Let me trump 27 years with over 38 years in the neighborhood where I have always had very good service at Davis Pharmacy--back from when Mr. Davis and his big dog were there up to the present. Edward--I'm sorry I don't know his last name--has provided continuity along with excellent work and always a friendly, warm welcome to everyone. It's a pleasure to go there. Davis Pharmacy We've had horrible, horrible experiences with CVS Pharmacy at 43rd and Locust. We're considering switching to Davis Pharmacy but would like to hear our neighbors' experiences with DP. RE: [UC] our neighbors go a-wilding
I would also like to say, as a middle school teacher, that the worst thing for these kids is for them to get away with this kind of stuff. The same for the boys the other day who threw the bottle. If they are not stopped now, they will only continue on without limits to worse things. Kids test for limits, and some can get very ugly if they never find any. Of course, if you know their parents and can talk to them, that would be the best. Jo Ann --- KAREN ALLEN [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Kyle, Yes, absolutely report it to the Philadelphia Police, with as thorough a description of what happened,, where, date, time of day. Call the 18th District Community Relations Officer, PO Mike Davis, (215) 686-3268. Even though your report may not result in an arrest for your crime, it can give police valuable information that could lead to their arrest in the future. Your report will alert the police that they should be on the lookout in your neighborhood for similar crimes. Your info, combined with reports from other neighborhood victims, will alert the police that there is a pattern of crime that must be addressed. Not reporting it leaves no chance of the perpetrators being caught. Once the police realize there is a pattern as to location, time of day, what was done, description of the perps (if known), they can put the information out at police roll call (which alerts patrol officers as to what to look out for) and they can also put plain clothes cops out in unmarked cars in the affected area. This gives the police info that they can use in finding the perpetrators - they may not get apprehended for what they did to you, but if at least if the Philly PD knows about it, they can be on the lookout for similar activity in the area. Even if they turn out to be eight year olds. As for reporting it to the UCD, the Philadelphia Police keeps crime stats, and they have to power to arrest. The UCD cannot arrest anyone. The only way the Philadelphia police can fight crime is when they know it occurs, so please report it to them. Re: [UC] For all the spelling buffs
Uh-oh! So much for my theories. I showed the passage to my first few students this morning. They are in middle school, reading at about a 3rd to 5th grade level. They could all figure out most of the passage, except for phenomenal, which was a word they didn't know no matter how it was spelled. They may have been able to sound it out if spelled correctly, but without ever having seen it before, they couldn't figure out the scrambled version.
