[UC] my dog got out again!

2007-10-29 Thread Melinda Salmon
Hi neighbors,
my really old dog is somehow rediscovering her youth and finding multiple
ways to get out of our fenced back yard. If you see her, could you send me an
email, call me (267-241-2495) or bring her by my house? Her name is Josie (but
she's pretty deaf), she is a black lab/shepherd mix, friendly with people but
doesn't like other dogs.
  Thanks!

[UC] Fwd: Plumber Recommendation

2008-02-07 Thread Melinda Salmon
Hi, I am forwarding an email sent to the list serve a while back that I saved.
At Jonathan's recommendation I used the plumber mentioned below. He was
excellent.

Speaking of recommended contractors (and at the risk of offending
Ray by engaging in advertising), I wanted to add an additional voice of
approval for Mike Katrakazis, a plumber previously recommended by Karen Allen.

I recently contacted him about installing a new soil line and stack in our
basement. He answered his cell phone on my first call and came out that next
day to inspect the job. He told me that he would provide a quote within a day
or two and as promised called with the quote. He explained that he was busy
but would be able to schedule the work within several weeks which was fine
because it was not an emergency situation. As promised, he called to schedule
the work and showed up last Saturday exactly at the appointed time. His price
was reasonable, he did nice work and took pains to leave the area clean
(including putting a drop cloth in the area where we have a playroom).

  I highly recommend him.

I've also used Bob Hughes. I wish more contractors were like Bob. He showed
up when he said he would. He was so busy he scheduled me for 3 weeks later.
He then very briefly called me every week to just to let me know that he was
still coming. He did half the job one week and then the other half the next
week. He wouldn't take any money from me until he completed the entire job.

Very respectful and reasonably priced.

Good luck,
Stephen

I used Bob Hughes for chimney repairs. I'm pretty sure he also does
cleaning, and since you use your fireplace a lot in the winter, it wouldn't
hurt to have him inspect it. The chimney liners tend to disintegrate when
it suits them, and you wouldn't want the kitties to be breathing in fumes.
Bob's number is (215) 342-5411.

Hey 4600 neighbors,

I've been thinking for awhile now about trying to get a group of neighborhood
kids together, and teaching them to play the ukulele. It's a very fun and
relatively easy instrument, and a great way to expose children to the joy of
making music.

I am ready to commit to this idea now, so if any of you have or know of kids
aged 8-15 (or thereabouts) who might be interested in learning to play ukulele,
please let me know. I figured I'd start with a series of 8 group classes, once
a
week, and after 8 weeks we'll see how we're doing and decide where to go next.
I
will not charge anything for this first sequence of classes. I probably
wouldn't
charge anything for subsequent series either, but I can't make any promises
there -- I could decide not to go forward, or to bring in another teacher.

Each child would need a ukulele. Decent ukes can be bought for $40-80. I would
ask parents who are interested to please let me know before you purchase
anything so I can give you some advice. The difference between a usable
instrument and a piece of junk is not always obvious.

I think 6-8 students would be a good number for the first class. I would teach
at my house on the weekends.

Here's some inspiration:

Let me know if you're interested. I will spread this offer out in a wider
radius, but id like to keep a West Philly focus if possible.

Thanks,
John

[UC] Another West Philly Restaurant set to open!

Just saw this in the City Paper:

Grill Fish Café | Come fall, Benny Lai of Vietnam (221 N. 11th St.) and Vietnam
Café (816 S. 47th St.) will open Grill Fish, a small, seafood-centric
restaurant, a few feet from his West Philly restaurant. The focus will be on
whole fish, but he'll also do squid, shrimp and shellfish, and maybe one or two
meat plates, at the 30-seat, liquor-licensed venue. More on Meal Ticket. 814 S.
