[UC] Gardencourt Neighborhood meeting
Did anyone attend the Gardencourt Community meeting last week? I was not able to make it and am very curious at the outcome. I heard through the grapevine that Blackwell announced there would be a Freshgrocer at 48th and Pine. Is this true? If so what are the plans and the projected timeline? Any info would greatly be appreciated. Re: [UC] Re: [UC-Announce] Clark Park Dog Run Update
I myself am in favor of a dog run in Clark park. For those of you who think it will not work take a look at NYC's Washington Sq. That park is probably around the same size as Clark park and it has a section of the park that is devoted to a dog run. The dog run is free to everyone and it seems to work out just fine. People in NYC seem to charish their park space because they don't have yards. Many people in Univ City have the luxury of a yard so a dog run doesn't mean much to them. Others of us are not that fortunate. I myself am live in Gardencourt Condos and do not have that luxury. To have an open space for my dog to run without the worry that he will see a squirrel and chase it into the street would be great! I don't have any children so I have no need to use the childs playground area in the park but that doesn't mean I don't think we need a playground. Maybe we should start charging so people can use the playground??? Just my 2 cents. -Paul Grossman You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. Re: [UC] Re: [UC-Announce] Clark Park Dog Run Update
Ok lets not get technical. The average person in manhatten does not usually have a backyard. Its a little less frequent there. If you can afford to have a backyard in manhatten then you have some big bucks and can afford to have someone take car of your dog. My point in the message I wrote was not to point out who has backyards or not, it was to make a comparison between Washington Sq's dog run and the one that could also work so well in Clark Park. I personally don't see what all the big deal is about. I mean people complain about dogs running off the leash and how they could potentially harm someone. Well theanswer is simple. Build a dog run. Well thats no good either because its a "hazard". Well what are we supposed to do??? Catch 22!!! I guess this is what happens when you live in a extremely diverse neighborhood. You get many different opinions. Maybe people need to learn to compromise a bit :) -Paul - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: univcity@list.purple.com Sent: Thursday, January 27, 2005 2:54 PM Subject: Re: [UC] Re: [UC-Announce] Clark Park Dog Run Update When you refer to NYC, do you mean Manhattan? I am interested in getting a diversity of grocery store options in University City. Right now we have the Fresh Grocer as pretty much our only option. I think that University City could support more grocery stores. We especially could use something farther to the west since the FoodRite (food wrong as some referred to it) closed recently. There really are no options for people who do not have cars. While searching around on the Wholefoods website I found a link on their contact page where you can suggest a new store location. [UC] South Street Bridge Article
http://www.philadelphiaweekly.com/article.asp?ArtID=7399 The Philadelphia Public Works Department completed construction on the South Street Bridge in 1923. The design of the bridge--which crosses the Schuylkill River to connect southwest Center City to the University of Pennsylvania's campus--was technologically clever for the time. The drawbridge could be raised for passing ships (this function ceased in the '50s), and electric cables powered a trolley that carried commuters and shoppers across the river. Stone piers at the base of the bridge supported a lovely promenade that jutted over the water, allowing pedestrians to soak in the waterfront view. But more than 80 years later, the South Street Bridge has lost its charm Old Photo: http://www.ectma.org/hja_photos/pcc086.jpg

Yeah well the bridge may be structurally sound but that doesn't stop concrete from falling on the expressway below. They were damn lucky that it didn't happen during rush hour. It's ludicrous, ridiculous, and just plain stupid that PENNDOT has been putting off this reconstruction project. Last I heard, the city postponed construction from the summer of 2003 to the spring of 2006 of this bridge. As far as I know, the bridge has always been scheduled for replacement in FY 2006, which begins in July of 2005. The fact that concrete is flaking off and that there are holes in the pedestrian walkways has nothing to do with the structural integrity of the bridge. That is sound. If the flaking continues to be an issue, they will put up netting under the bridge to catch the flakes. (One reporter claimed they were doing that this morning, but I haven't been down to see what was done.) As I understand it, when the bridge is being replaced, it will be completely shut down -- for the duration of construction - 1-2 years. T.T.F.N. William H. Re: [UC] RE: Bike traffic increases dramatically on Spruce St
Yeah people were parking right in front of the sign warning them of the impending fines. Kind of funny. What's even more funny is almost every time I would go past the sign I would see a police car parked in the bike lane right in front of the sign. Now what kind of a role model is that? -Paul Grossman - Original Message - From: Dubin, Elisabeth To: Bike listserve (E-mail) ; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 09, 2003 11:21 AM Subject: [UC] RE: Bike traffic increases dramatically on Spruce St Just for the record, a few weeks ago I was riding in that bike lane and got doored by a passenger who suddenly got out of a car in the lane next to me. I wound up in the ER for an open fracture to the toe (weird injury, I know, but I was wearing sandals). Before that, I was always vigilant and terrified when riding on Spruce between 38th and 33rd, and now I just plain won't ride there at all. It's just too busy with taxis, loading, and chaos. No one pays attention to bikes, and despite the sign regarding ticketing vehicles in the bike lane, I don't think people think twice about hovering there in their cars. I honestly don't know what should be done there, but there is still an inherent conflict between the bike lane presence and the fact that it just isn't safe... in other words, just because you put a bike lane there does change the nature of the street. So, what's the solution? (I'm ccing the univcity list on this, not to bring up the bike topic again but just as a reminder to be safe on Spruce.) Tentatively between 110 and 120 bikes used Spruce St between 4 and 5 pm. In 1998 a pre-bike lane count was undertaken by the Streets Department Consulting Team at RBA 6 hours a day during 3 weeks in April. Back then the peak evening hourly count averagewas 75 bikes. The absolute highest number for any hourly count was 91 bikes in the morning. This represents a 40 - 50% increase in bike traffic after bike lanes were installed on Spruce St. Over thefew daysI will do further analysis of the photos to determine helmet use, wrong way and sidewalk riding. A side note - a Penn Police van and a flower van blocked the bike lane for several minutes in front of me., While the police van could claim emergency vehicle status (they were answering a call) the officers basically ignored the flower vanright behind them. Re: [UC] Hack filming in our neighborhood
The parking situation when Hack is filmed is terrible. They don't just take up one block, they take up 4-5 blocks with all of their trucks and vans. It makes it very hard to find any parking at all. I noticed on one occasion a neighbor of mine left his car on the street and went out of town. Hack did one of their film shoots while he was gone and when he returned his car was gone. 1st thing he assumed was that it had been stolen. What had happened is the city towed the car about 6 blocks away but never told anyone. Maybe if the neighborhood had been given ample warning this would never have happened. I can understand if they want to do a shoot that they use one or two blocks but to block off 4 or 5 blocks at a time for a few days when they are only filming on one block just doesn't make sense to me. Do the actors really need 5 trailers? -Paul Grossman 4625 Pine - Original Message - From: Brian Siano [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, August 28, 2003 3:44 PM Subject: [UC] Hack filming in our neighborhood About two weeks ago, I was talking with a friend, and he complained a bit about the parking situation when _Hack_ films in the neighborhood. I sorta of made conciliatory noises (I don't own a car, and I like the idea that my neighborhood's such a great location), but he complained about how nobody seemed to have _asked_ anyone about the production coming into the neighborhood. Ive since spoken to several people who live on blocks where filming's happened, and I heard the same story; it's as if someone had decided that the filming next day signs were all the warning the neighborhood needed. Production companies aren't usually that callous, and there's the city's film production office to deal with, so it's my guess that the producers of _Hack_ must have spoken to _someone_ about filming in our neighborhood. Whoever or whatever that was, they didn't seem to have notified anybody about the way _Hack_'s production would affect our neighborhood. Now I'm watching the students return, and there's the more-than-usual glut of cars along our streets, and I'm wondering if any local production in the fall's going to create even _more_ problems. And frankly, I'd rather not have _Hack_ move into some other place for filming; like I said, it's another reason to be proud of the neighborhood. So I'd like to throw out a general, open-question thing to this list. Has there been any kind of open community discussion about this? Has there been any attempt to develop methods for handling the parking situation? Has production helped out local economy in any big way (i.e., does the crew ever eat food that's not catered?) Has anyone experienced any impact-- good, bad, whatever-- as a result of the production? You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. Re: [UC] [john@bikemap.com: Penn cracking down (illegally) onbikes!]
I agree. As a biker I find it very dangerous when the bike lanes are used as loading zones. Its not easy to have swerve around cars parked especially where there are trolley tracks. One wrong turn and your wheel is stuck in the trolley track and you're down. Also I don't understand why at the Wawa at 38th and Spruce they did not install a loading zone when they redid the street. They made the bike lane plenty wide enough for cars to park there and block the bike lane. Funny I always see cop cars parked there. The bike lanes are great when they are clear for bikers but as Richard said its more dangerous when they are being parked in. -Paul Grossman - Original Message - From: R. Re: [UC] [Opinion: Bikes]
I bike everyday. I agree with John that Bikes should stick to the street. SideWALKS are for walking and not for biking. Bike lanes are for biking and not for parking or driving in!!! That's the problem. Why have the bike lanes if they're just going to be used as parking lanes. I don't understand the point of creating a greater danger for bikers. Bikers need to be given more respect. Bikers cut down on pollution, create less traffic and also help ease the parking problem. I also think bikers themselves need to think about pedestrians and stay off the sidewalks especially where there are alternatives such as bike lanes. -Paul Grossman - Original Message - From: Sharon Nicolary [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: John Ellingsworth [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: UC [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, June 11, 2003 11:17 AM Subject: Re: [UC] [Opinion: Bikes] That is a ridiculous thing to say. [UC] Trashed block
I have noticed on my walk to work every morning for the past few months that the 3900 block of Pine Street seems to be covered with trash. Trash is dumped and left there all week long.
