Ross is right, so let me just say... Disclaimer to the List: The opinions of Samuel Nicolary are not necessarily those of Sharon Nicolary and/or her affililiates. Mentioning the word shot gun in any shape or form, albeit joking, is never acceptable. However, I do the like the idea of the camera. Sharon Nicolary Quoting [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Sharon, did you know your husband is out on the loose again, yammering about Charles Bronson and ass whipping? Would you please come out with the leather handcuffs and restrain him again? Or the whips and boots -- whatever it takes to keep him happy and away from the computer. Thanks. Ross Bender http://rossbender.org/exorcism.html In a message dated 4/18/2005 9:43:17 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: You can also sit on your back porch with a shotgun full of rock salt and when they come 'round - use some good ole fashioned Pavlovian training. I worked for me back in high school - I've never gone cow tipping ever again. Don't listen to all these sappy turn-the-cheekers, pseudo-hippies or washed up old beatniks. A good ass whipping goes a long way with a child that has gone astray. If someone threw a broken bottle at me - I don't care how old they are - they'd think twice about ever doing it again to anyone. If you don't think you have it in you then just go rent (or buy if you need the conditioning effect of more than one viewing) the whole Charles Bronson (RIP) Death Wish series (I - V) - it's just what the doctor ordered. At the very least invest in a cheap motion activated camera, catch the culprits on video and get the police involved. I am more of a fan of the CBDW approach though... [UC] Re: 3-Pack of Dangerous Dogs, seen near 4600 Springfield Ave on Tuesday at 2:30 PM
Thank you for informing us, Liz. Thank you for doing all that you did to keep these children safe. I am so sorry for that poor man that was attacked. We have to stop this from happening as much as it does. I am very upset by this as this is a common problem in our neighborhood. (I suppose that is why the unleashed dog subject line occurs so often on the list.) I cannot believe that any owner could be that irresponsible. I wonder if you could talk to Paul as well and ask him not to leave that food out as this is just going to attract these horrible dogs to our neighborhood. Is there any action we can take as a community against this? Sharon Quoting Elizabeth F. Campion [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Dear Neighbors, On Tuesday at 2:30 PM, as I was headed to an appointment, I encountered a pack of 3 dogs, running loose. Two were obvious Pit mixes, the third seemed terrier like. The largest was about 75#s and cinnamon colored, one was brindle, the smallest was brownish and about 35#s. They were travelling north on 46th toward Springfield. Lucky for me, the cats that hang out at 4601 Springfield proved a more tempting target. The dogs tore across the street, up the lawn and onto the porch, seemingly in hot pursuit of cat snack. I did not wait to see if they caught any cat or kittens. Despite the press of my appointment, I was aware that SFDS would be dismissing 600 children in less than 5 minutes, and I was not prepared to see cat-snack be redirected to kiddies--bits. I made a mad dash for the crossing guard at 47th (I didn't even realize I can still run), while calling the school on my cell. The call was a hope for time for the school to generate a Public Announcement of the imminent danger. It is amazing what flashes through minds when there is danger to self or children. I realized I was mentally accounting for parents who walk their kids to and from school and assigning them a value as practical assistants in the herding of children into larger groups and away from the danger of the dogs. I also dialed 911, but the dispatch service didn't get potential / preventable risk and demanded I take down the number for PACA (Philadelphia Animal Control). So, with a Crossing Guard restraining the kids to 47th and Springfield, and Terry B. holding firm on Farragut, and a boiling mass of children along all of that block of Springfield, we provided a noisy incentive for the dogs to move on. The pack headed West on Springfield and than South on 47th (with a brief dash into one of the alleys on the West side of 47th) to Chester. Children were instructed to travel in groups and several adults volunteered to walk the kids to the trolleys. Parents, who normally drive, helped by positioning cars to separate the kids and the dogs until imminent danger was passed. There were reports that an adult male had been attacked, on 46th, before I first saw the pack. One of the parents claimed the man was dragged into the street, and that the parent used his car to tap the largest dog, which let go and led the other dogs to 4601. That Driver claims he also called 911, and expected some response. I was less optimistic after my contact with 911. The parent headed toward the school, because he saw the attacked man stand up and appear okay, but the driver feared for his children who were expected to be on a path that would intercept that of the dogs. I write for three reasons. First is in warning. I am concerned that these dogs pose a danger to neighbors. I fear that they will come back to 4601, as there is almost always dry food, water and cats on that porch. I called Paul (owner 4601) and suggested he look out before he steps out, to avoid meeting the pack on his porch. I also let him know that it was animals not any human that had wreaked havoc on his porch. I am faxing a copy of this note to PACA, and I ask you, my neighbors, to please stay away from these dogs, and to please report their movements or regular hangouts. I do not think these are pets, I do not remember seeing collars, only the blood on the ruff of the largest dog, and the kids I was hoping to protect. Second, I'd like to see a greater willingness on the part of Police Dispatch to deal with preventable incidents. The Crossing Guard, other mothers and I should not have to become the perimeter defense for close to 300 children. The Principal, Sr. Constance, followed up with Police who claimed they responded, but it was not while the danger was imminent ( a period of at least 12-13 minutes). The dogs spent at least 2-3 minutes at 4601, at least 5 minutes of sassy posturing as they investigated our group from the south side of Springfield, and several more minutes each, on 47th street and in the alley. The kids had time to see that the lead dog was covered in relatively fresh blood from his muzzle to behind his ears. It was not clear if it was his own blood, that of one of the cats, or even from the male dragging victim. Some of the kids were terrified.

Thank you for the information John. -- Sharon Nicolary Quoting John Ellingsworth [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Neighbors Some of you may recall the recent incident regarding the shooting of an individual at 45th pine. This individual was shot, in the face, after surrendering his belongings to the perpetrators. He survived the shooting. It has come to my attention that there was an incident several days ago, wherein a couple was sitting on there porch on 49th street and a young man came onto the porch, displayed again and tried to gain entry to the house. The couple, entering first, slammed the door on him, at which point he fired the gun into the house. No one was injured. And last night, a man was approached by three guys at (45th Locust) who took his backback, cell phone and car. They made him lay face down in the street and beg them not to kill him. We have not heard anything from the University regarding these incidents (the first incident involved a University employee). We have not heard anything from the police. Neighbors, be careful! Look out for each other, and don't hesitate to call 911 if you see something suspicious going on on your block. -- Thanks, John Ellingsworth 2005-01-05 You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. For those of you who are ashamed to be an American, shame on you. We are lucky to be in a country where we have the right to express our opinion, and yes, vote for whomever we want... For those of you who want to move to Canada, why all the talk? Move to Canada. If you think you'll be happier there, I say go ahead. However, perpetuating such views as the president is dumb and I'm ashamed to be an American is disgusting to me. Well-said. -- Sharon Nicolary Quoting Clinton, J. Scott [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I'm not exactly sure how this all relates to west philly, but I suppose that the election is the most newsworthy topic of discussion for most people; all of the lists I subscribe to are temporarially election discussion lists. So here's my plea. Try not to blame the outcome of the election on moralists or religious whackos or whatever. I'm not sure that is where this discussion is going, but it sure did on other lists and so I'd like to try and prevent that here. I'm not a member of a political party because I don't see that either group represents my interests very well. I toss my tiny bit of support one way or another depending on the election. I am also a Christian, though I certainly don't identify with the conservative Christian ideology. The problem is, the Democrats can't seem to put a candidate on the ticket that I can wholehartedly support. Folks like me are tired of being told who we must vote for because of our faith when neither group really takes positions that we hold as important. There are lots of other progressive Christians out there, but they need to be courted and split away from the religious right. This would take a mighty chunk from the Republican base of support. I don't think the Democrats are going to do this though, because to court these people, they run the risk of turning off some of the more liberal elements of their support. So maybe someone out there has an idea how to organize the Religious Left to help counter the Religious Right or what that might look like. I truly feel for folks (in Ohio and elsewhere) who may have wanted to vote for John Kerry but couldn't quite do it because the national discussion of religious values was given up to the conservatives and nobody really talked about the flaws in the theology of just wars, the inconsistancy of being anti-abortion and pro-death pentalty, the invasion of foreign lands flying in the face of Christs' call to turn the other cheek, etcetera, etcetera. I agree that criticism is vital to the process. Your point is valid there. But there is a difference between intelligent criticism and some of the things I read on this list or hear on CNN. I agree also with your that both candidates being deeply flawed. Oh so now Bush is Hitler. That wasn't my point. My point was that a popular leader -- and Bush appears to have won the popular vote -- is not necessarily a good, worthy leader. Bush's increasingly erratic behavior and wide mood swings has the halls of the West Wing buzzing lately as aides privately express growing concern over their leader's state of mind. In meetings with top aides and administration officials, the President goes from quoting the Bible in one breath to obscene tantrums against the media, Democrats and others that he classifies as enemies of the state. Worried White House aides paint a portrait of a man on the edge, increasingly wary of those who disagree with him and paranoid of a public that no longer trusts his policies in Iraq or at home. It reminds me of the Nixon days, says a longtime GOP political consultant with contacts in the White House. Everybody is an enemy; everybody is out to get him. That's the mood over there. In interviews with a number of White House staffers who were willing to talk off the record, a picture of an administration under siege has emerged, led by a man who declares his decisions to be God's will and then tells aides to fuck over anyone they consider to be an opponent of the administration. We're at war, there's no doubt about it. What I don't know anymore is just who the enemy might be, says one troubled White House aide. We seem to spend more time trying to destroy John Kerry than al Qaeda and our enemies list just keeps growing and growing. Aides say the President gets hung up on minor details, micromanaging to the extreme while ignoring the bigger picture. He will spend hours personally reviewing and approving every attack ad against his Democratic opponent and then kiss off a meeting on economic issues. This is what is killing us on Iraq, one aide says. We lost focus. The President got hung up on the weapons of mass destruction and an unproven link to al Qaeda. We could have found other justifiable reasons for the war but the President insisted the focus stay on those two, tenuous items. Aides who raise questions quickly find themselves shut out of access to the President or other top advisors. Among top officials, Bush's inner circle is shrinking. Secretary of State Colin Powell has fallen out of favor because of his growing doubts about the administration's war against Iraq. The President's abrupt dismissal of CIA Directory George Tenet Wednesday night is, aides say, an example of how he works. Tenet wanted to quit last year but the President got his back up and wouldn't hear of it, says an aide. That would have been the opportune time to make a change, not in the middle of an election campaign but when the director challenged the President during the meeting Wednesday, the President cut him off by saying 'that's it George. I cannot abide disloyalty. I want your resignation and I want it now. Tenet was allowed to resign voluntarily and Bush informed his shocked staff of the decision Thursday morning. One aide says the President actually described the decision as God's will. God may also be the reason Attorney General John Ashcroft, the administration's lightning rod because of his questionable actions that critics argue threatens freedoms granted by the Constitution, remains part of the power elite. West Wing staffers call Bush and Ashcroft the Blues Brothers because they're on a mission from God. The Attorney General is tight with the President because of religion, says one aide. They both believe any action is justifiable in the name of God. But the President who says he rules at the behest of God can also tongue-lash those he perceives as disloyal, calling them fucking assholes in front of other staff, berating one cabinet official in front of others and labeling anyone who disagrees with him unpatriotic or anti-American. The mood here is that we're under

It means that two people decide they want to be with the other, every day, through the good, the bad, and the ugly, because the good is the best they will ever have in their life. I actually cannot believe there is even an argument here. I cannot imagine of all the heterosexual married couples I know or know of, that any one of them would stand up and say that homosexuals have no right to enjoy the same privileges of a heterosexual married couple. You have just as much a right as I, to express your devotion in a public ceremony, to be recognized as a legally married couple, as any of us do. We let anyone heterosexual get married in our legal system. You don't have to prove anything, just that you are a man and a woman. If we are going to continue to have this condition placed on marriage, why not more conditions? I wonder how the hetereosexual couple would feel if the tables were somehow turned? Let's face it. Many people don't really get monogamy. For the people like you who obviously get it and do it right and are together for thirty-two years, I feel very happy for you, and happy for our world the more I see it. Anyone who thinks they can place judgment on this is seriously deluded about their own lives and people in general. Sad to say, but many people are. I apologize on behalf of the heterosexuals who think they can make a judgment about this. Sharon Quoting [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Bill. You wrote: If gay marriage becomes legal that will make it easier for them to adopt kids and teach them to be queer too. (Not that there is anything wrong with that) I am positive that that you cannot teach someone to be gay. Either God makes you gay, or straight, or somewhere in between. One can no sooner teach someone whose orientation is heterosexual to 'switch teams than one can teach someone attracted to the same gender as themselves to go straight All those ex-gay testemonies are a bunch of BS. Why can't they stay in the closet and do this stuff behind closed doors instead of doing it in public parks and other public places ? There is a small minority of the gay population who do this. Accept my appologies for their behavior. But for myself and my partner, and our numerous friends who were created gay, don't generalize about our sexuality and we won't generalize about yours! Finally, after spending thirty-two and a half years with the same man, I've earned every benefit that the govenment gives a heterosexual married couple, but because we can't be married, our civil rights as a couple and a household are minimal! I am positive we are being screwed! Fred Wolfe WRZ PS - Positive feedback only please. You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. RE: [UC] State of the Union address
Yes, Mr. Zardus. A chipmunk could run the US. Perhaps a chicken-hawk could also. I wish that people would really think about things before making ridiculous comments like this. Let's all just stop and think occasionally before spouting off things like that. Sharon Quoting William Zardus [EMAIL PROTECTED]: This is probably the dumbest president we've ever had in office. Are things like worthless piece of trash necessary to say? Is political commentary in such a way on this list necessary? Quoting William Zardus [EMAIL PROTECTED]: The first thing we need to do is stop electing gutless chicken-hawks to be president. Quayle beget Clinton, Clinton beget Bush Old man Bush made Quayle his running mate to clear the way for his gutless son 8 years later but none of us knew it at the time. That is very good advice. I would also add that you should refrain from leaving even a quarter on the floor or a penny or anything. Thank you to all who replied. 911 did sound strange, but I called and they said an officer will call me back. I will also call UCD as suggested. Sharon Quoting Melanie C. Re: [UC] cat poisoning
I am also very upset by this. This man has a problem. Something is wrong with him. Those poor cats have been sick and thin for some time. You can smell the cat feces from down the street. It is disgusting. I was sorry to hear that someone has poisened these poor cats, but let's not point fingers at the folks living on Farragut. I am curious as to why this man has not been brought up on charges of animal cruelty. Perhaps we should all contact the people at the PACCA and bother them enough about this that they will do something to prevent more cats from dying terrible deaths and from being left to procreate out of control and making our neighborhood a unhealthy environment. Quoting Michael [EMAIL PROTECTED]: http://citypaper.net/articles/2003-10-02/cb4.shtml Being a responsible cat owner living near Paul Kelley's residence, I must add my opinion to this thread. That man has been fueling the neighborhood cat population for years. We take very good care of our pets, neuter them, feed them, and even take care of some of the strays that live in the area. It is a disgrace to see these beautiful little guys get hit by cars, starve and have no real home, only to have him breed more . I had always chalked his irresponsibility up to not knowing any better, but now that i see that he is doing this in the name of pro-life it really makes me very very angry. Its really a shame that its come to this. Now I have to fear for the health of my animals as some of them are acting ill. If we find out who is responsible for this they are going to have some very very serious problems. Its most likely a nearby neighbor, perhaps someone living or working on farragut street.. I know most of the folks on nearby 46th and i can tell you with much certainty that its noone i know, as most are caring pet owners. Sincerely, --Michael.
