[UC] Digital TV problems

2009-07-02 Thread Steve and Mimi

With the switch to digital TV, we no longer receive a number of channels we
used to get in the days of analog with our rabbit ear antenna, including WHYY.
Is this problem affecting others without cable? Does anyone know if this is a
larger systems issue and if it's being looked into?

Many thanks for the information.

Hi All,
There is cat on the roof of my house. It seems lethargic and looks like it
has had a hard life. I suspect that it is quite ill. I've put out food and
water, but am terribly allergic so it cannot come inside. I also have a dog
that does not like cats or other animals. Can anyone offer advice or take it
in?
Thanks for any help, I hate to see this animal suffer.

[UC] Asbestos in flooring question

Hi All,
I have some old linoleum-like flooring in a hallway that I'd like to remove,
but I am concerned about asbestos. The product, which is a solid sheet as

anyone know how to determine if this hazard is present in the covering?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

[UC] FW: House Numbers on Transoms

2007-06-01 Thread Steve and Mimi
Below describes the easiest way to put up attractive house numbers on
transoms. On a trip to Pittsburgh this week, I noticed that many home
owners in the Allegheny City historic district had "restored" their house
numbers using custom-made vinyl signs.

Mimi

My name is Patti. Susan Z., from your neighborhood, emailed your question
on

transom windows to me. I'm a graphic designer and I've done this myself. In
addition, after having our transom recently replaced I need to do it again.

First, find a sign shop that handles vinyl lettering, the type usually used
for cars and store fronts. Ideally the shop should cut the vinyl itself,
otherwise you may be dealing with a "middleman."

Second, you must decide if you're up to the task of installing the
lettering

yourself. Honestly, it's easy to make a mistake, so I'd suggest that you
have the shop install it.

Third, give some thought to the color and style of your lettering. Although
the color black is standard in vinyl, there are a few different golds
available. Generally, if you pick a gold that the shop does not have in
stock, it'll cost $$, so it may behoove you to find a shop with several
golds on the shelf. As far as the typefaces, there are many to choose from;
I've found that classics with serifs work well. These include: Century
Oldstyle, Garamond, Goudy or Adobe Caslon. To get you started, I can
produce

your house number in each one of these typefaces for printing (using a PDF
file).

Lastly, experiment with the printed house numbers. My husband and I printed
out our house number to size and placed each one, one at a time, in our
transom window. Eventually we agreed on the perfect one.

Let me know if you'd like me to set up your house number in the typefaces
mentioned above, or perhaps another if you're familiar with what you want.
Also, once you've made a decision on what you'd like, I can set up the file
for you to submit to the sign shop.

I hope this answered most of your questions. Let me know if you have any
others.

Patti

[UC] Deer in Woodland Cemetary

2007-05-21 Thread Steve and Mimi
Can anyone offer some help with the situation described below? Please
contact Opa Hamilton at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Best,
R. Mimi Iijima

--

There are deer in the cemetery on Woodland by VA Hosp., maybe you have
been and seen them. I go often to see them. They stand on hind legs and
nibble lower leaves of the trees, it is beautiful. They are there to see
at dusk and early in the mornings. There are several fawns now. They all
come and go via paths along the river. They have other hangouts too. Very
unafraid, used to joggers, bikers, walkers, and cars.

Two policeman were there also watching them tonight and told me that the
deer will be killed by game wardens on May 23rd (this is May 20th!!!)
They were concerned and wondered why no one is trying to stop them. I
don't think anyone knows.

I was hot online tonight and emailed a lot of animal activist groups,
hopefully at least, someone that knows the ropes can check it out
tomorrow I don't think the police would be pulling my leg about
something like that. They seemed really concerned and appreciative of
having deer here in the city.

If you know any avenues, or interested people... Anything I hear I can
forward. Two of the groups responded and emailed their people... cc'd it
to me.

It would make me sick to know they were dead. I know there are too
many deer in PA. But NOT TOO MANY IN THE CITYThey could thin the
herd? Leave the fawns?

  Sorry for bad news. opa

RE: Fwd: [UC] open sewer disaster

2007-05-05 Thread Steve and Mimi

Hi All,
About 2-3 weeks ago I also came across an open sewer entrance. This was on
Chester Ave. at 48th Street. Someone leaving the dog run said they'd report
the hazard to the Streets dept.

I wonder if scrap yards would buy the grates. It seems unlikely since the
covers would be so obviously stolen, but then again this is Philadelphia...

Best,
Steve.

Yes, after seeing John's picture and realizing exactly what was missing,
that was exactly my question: what happened to the storm drain cover? It's
obviously too sturdy and heavy to have either broken or blow away. Someone
has to be taking them. But who?
