2011-07-13 Thread Wilma de Soto
You're right Jim. I guess the point I was trying to make is Liz's depiction
seemed to me a very limited perspective that suggested a more stilted,
contrived, planned version of whar she thinks West Philly is that does not call
to mind West Philly to some of us.

I live on 45 th St. near Pine. Did you know that actor Peter Boyle grew up on
51st St. near Black Oak Park?

Of course Al diPalma is long gone and Murray's is in Narberth but many of
things I listed are still here.

Thanks for writing.

Re: [UC] FW: You know you live in West Philly if . . .

2011-07-13 Thread Amara Rockar
You all realize if Liz used “University City” or something instead of “West
Philly” people would be crying out, “No, it’s West Philly – University City
is a marketing scheme!” and then arguing about the boundaries of University
City versus West Philly. (Anyway, it is Lenapehoking – West Philly is
colonialism)

Given Philly Mag’s largely suburban readership, is it so bad to provide a
short list of quirky and fun things about the area? The same magazine ran an
article last year where the author (not Liz) said that when out-of-towners
ask him about nice places in Philly – he leaves out the ENTIRE WEST PHILLY
REGION.

Here is a list of West Philly Neighborhoods:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Philadelphia_neighborhoods#West_Philadelphia

Perhaps you all could go through and flag all the ones that aren’t “real”
West Philly? Because I get the feeling by the time it’s done, all we’ll be
left with is Cobbs Creek and maybe one or two others.

I think you mistook my post and my intention. Her post was obviously
designed to appeal to PhillyMag readers. That doesn't make it true,
however.

There is more than one way of looking at West Philly without it ALL being
bad except for the UCD approved areas. I posted my ideas of what makes West
Philly and a life-long resident. They are as valid as well as the
"PhillyMag" version.

You all realize if Liz used ³University City² or something instead of ³West
Philly² people would be crying out, ³No, it¹s West Philly University City
is a marketing scheme!² and then arguing about the boundaries of University
City versus West Philly. (Anyway, it is Lenapehoking West Philly is
colonialism)

Given Philly Mag¹s largely suburban readership, is it so bad to provide a
short list of quirky and fun things about the area? The same magazine ran an
article last year where the author (not Liz) said that when out-of-towners
ask him about nice places in Philly he leaves out the ENTIRE WEST PHILLY
REGION.

Perhaps you all could go through and flag all the ones that aren¹t ³real²
West Philly? Because I get the feeling by the time it¹s done, all we¹ll be
left with is Cobbs Creek and maybe one or two others.

The whole west philly vs university city thing pisses me off - they are two
very distinct areas (even if UC is in West Philly). And really, if you're going
to complain about new names, shouldn't we be calling it Blockley (Lenapehoking
being the entire Delaware and Hudson basin)?

I was born here and have lived here all my life except for a couple college
years, and I still don't know many of the things on Wilma's list!
Although it did take me a few years to start calling it USP, and I still refer
to the Tavern.

Mr. Davis notwithstanding he may very well not remember all the the things

Hey... Roger said Bill Davis was 85 years old. So forgive him a memory
lapse here or there. I started forgetting things (and becoming crotchety) when
I began to get senile at age 10. And, it's been downhill ever since.

Please people...
This is the most rediculous, petty display of trying to one-up each
other on who is the most worthy "West Philadelphian". Take the
article for what it's worth. The author was trying to show her
perspective on being a happy west philly resident. The list she made
up is an accurate depiction from her (and many other's) point of
view. She was just writing a lite, humorous list based on what you
might see or experience while living here. She was by no means trying
to say she was an expert on "old school" west philly".
Congratulations to the others that had to show everyone that they were
living in west philly since the indians roamed Cobbs Creek and the
places that are "Over the line". Be proud that your community is a
unique place that folks are proud to live in.

LOL! I loved the way you put this.

The most worthy West Philadelphian was not my intent, it just that her
version of what constitutes West Philly now and before does not ring true
for me.

I too am a happy West Philly resident. Sorry I upset so many people by
posting my list that differed from the author's. Gee!

Dear Neighbors, I consider myself a "true West Philadelphia" and a big fan of
Liz Spikol.Liz has written, with great candor, about bouts with illness,
features of the drugs she has taken, and life on the outside. At times, she
gave a voice and clarity to things I was guessing about my beloved sister
Maggie.I enjoyed her 'list"/article and recognized everything on it. One of my
favorite things about West Philly is its ability to be inclusive and/or turn
things topsy-turvy. I think Liz caught a little of the flavor of the "PC" and
even some of the 'reverse class-ism' that runs through WP. West Philly is often
so far ahead of the curve that we sometimes don't get full credit for
home-grown ideas. Some examples: The Art Deco movement may have started here,
moved to Paris and than back to New York.Movies were made here before
Hollywood. The Fresh Prince and Liz Lemon (okay she's so far west she's
suburban), made it here first.Penn's Eniac was a precursor to Silicon
Valley. One of the geniuses behind Artificial Intelligence still quietly thinks
great thoughts from his home on 48th Street. Like Bill Davis, I could not
remember a few things on Wilma's list. And like so many of Wilma's
contributions, her list reminds me that even in West Philly, there have always
been divisions between "Catholics, Publics and Privates". People like me, who
attended St. Francis and West Catholic, grew with different experiences from
the "Publics", (students at Lea and Wilson), or the "Privates" (at Pillar of
Fire or St. Leonard's). There are still many different experiences based upon
Skin Color, choice of Worship (or not), Gender preference and Abilities (or
lack there of). When I was named a National Merit Finalist and won a
Scholarship to PENN, I learned there was a big gap in the opportunities offered
to the students of the "Ivies". Even as an adult, I realize my IQ, decades of
experience and almost encyclopedic memory of the homes and neighbors of
CC/UC/WP are not always a match for a trust fund or connection. One of my
favorite things about being in West Philly is the number of great thinkers,
good communicators, writers and healers who fill our streets, parks and
gathering places. I love the amount of learning I absorb just listening to
people I am permitted to call friends. And I especially like when the
brilliant children of this neighborhood are the ones who open my eyes to new
thoughts and experiences. BTW: Based upon my childhood, I think the most common
early question, was, "What's your home Parrish?", so my list would include, You
know your in West Philly if you describe your neighborhood with a Saints name.
I know this will not resonate with many of my friends, but it is my experience

My Dear Liz,

Hopefully you will not be excoriated because you dared to post the your list
of what West Philly means to you.

Actually, Al Krigman started it.

I still don't think I should apologize for criticizing Liz Spikol's article.
Actually my friend Carol Saline and I have had many discussions about how
PhillyMag portrays our neighborhood whilst we were fellow CFL Board Members
since 1990. Lots of great arguments.

Apparently my view was the most offensive because people thought I was
trying to tell the "pioneers" in Liz's article how it was before them and
that they were not real West Philly people.

I have my view and Liz Campion and Bill Davis have theirs. Like everyone,
one forgets things and might be reminded by someone who was also there. I
welcome this.
