Re: [UC] Indian Food Recommendation

2003-05-29 Thread Michael

Finally a topic we all can agree upon. :)

New Delhi -

Excellent though they often have the same old thing, which can either be good or
bad depending upon what you're looking for. Ice cream/coffee is included although
other beverages are not. ND has a liquor license which is a notable difference
between it and Tandoor which is right around the corner.
ND is very very popular and can therefore be very crowded during peak times.
ND also delivers, but recently when i called they told me that 46th
and baltimore was too far away (which is garbage considering the fact
that they deliver to center city).

Tandoor India -

Tandoor is on par with New Delhi in terms of price, quality and service.
Soft drinks are included at Tandoor (self-service) which i dont think
most people realize. Desert and coffee/tea are not. Tandoor (as the name implies)
has excellent Tandoori chicken. It is the best i've ever had, at least
10x better than ND. Tandoor is often less crowded than ND but can get
quite busy at certain times. Tandoor also has natural lighting (skylight/window)
which is quite a contrast to the closed-in feel of ND. The menu at Tandoor
is also much more likely to change often, and to include more variety
in the new items they serve.

Sitar India -

I used to frequent Sitar India quite a deal when i first moved to UC.
The biggest drawback here is that this place is 3+ blocks away
from the 40th st. eating area. I haven't eaten there in years
but the food was so-so. Its definately not as large scale an operation
as either Tandoor or ND.

New Delhi has the most elegant website:

 http://www.newdelhiweb.com/

Compared to Tandoor India:

It has a far wider selection of soups (coconut is good), appetizers, meat dishes (I like the Special Mixed Grill), breads (the poori, baked in their special Tandoor Oven, is to die for), and desserts (look out, look out - there's a dessert display in the foyer with Gulab Jamun and a vast variety of sweets, some of which I swear  look like sushi, from which they have to drag you to get you into the restaurant proper itself). It has Lassi, Barfi and Raita. Their Colossal Buffet includes Salad Bar, Chat Bar and Desserts. Lunch buffet is $5.95, dinner is $8.95. (Tandoor has buffets at a comparable price, and its Sunday Brunch is only $6.40.)

Indian food is alluring no matter where you go. People from our church used to go to the Sunday buffet after services and it is a warm and friendly place, and the food, though limited in variety, is yummy.

But for elegant spicy decor, killer desserts, and *exciting people* to look at, try New Delhi.

Title: RE: [UC] Indian Food Recommendation

Dear Neighbors,

There is one restaurant I would like to add to this list, but it is also not in University City.  That is Shivnanda at 114 Chestnut Street around the corner from Café Spice.  Whenever I have walked past Café Spice, it is very noisy.  Shivnanda is never uncomfortably noisy (my grand pet peeve)and it is well-appointed.  You can also watch them cook the food.  I recommend it highly.  One of my neighbors from India and another neighbor who traveled through India both thought the food was excellent and authentic.

    Dear list members:

I do not mean to denigrate the offerings in UnivCity, which are good.  However,
if you would like a change and are willing to pay more, there is another option.
If you seek  tasty Indian food with a very charming ambiance, Cafe Spice on 2nd St.
is particularly enjoyable.  I have never had a bad meal there.  I often get the tandoori
chicken with a side of raita -- a delicious light meal.  When the weather
is nice, they can open wide the windows facing the street so that the front tables
    have an outdoor cafe feel.

DON'T neglect our local restaurants, but for a change of pace when going to the
Ritz or other downtown venues, keep Cafe Spice in mind.

I would also recommend Sitar (on 38th near Chestnut), as they have some southern
Indian specialties that you won't find at the others. But all three (Sitar, Tandoor
India (on 40th near Sansom) and New Delhi (on Chestnut near 40th)) have good food at
similar prices. New Delhi always seems to be the most crowded when I go there - but I
think it may be because they have regular discount coupons in the DP, Philadelphia
Weekly and City Paper.

I have eaten at all of the Indian Restaurants in UCity and am very partial to New Delhi on Chestnut. I avoid Sitar on 38th. I don't think they put any care into the food and I've found their small selection to be over cooked, greasy and, believe it or not, bland.

I must say that I've never even tried the nearby restaurants; why mess
