[SlimDevices: Unix] Can't view web interface locally
I've had SqueezeCenter (currently at 7.3.3 - 27044) running on an Ubuntu 8.04 (64-bit) box for a while now. A recent system update seems to have screwed something up, because I cannot open the SqueezeCenter web interface in Firefox on that machine. Both http://localhost:9000 and http://127.0.0.1:9000 give me (different) errors. When I go to http://localhost:9000 Firefox seems to be trying to go to www.localhost.com. On the server, I can ping localhost. I can use http://192.168.1.71:9000 to see it from other machines. Hmm - just tried that url on the Ubuntu box again and it's working now, though I thought it wasn't working before. I can use that as a workaround, but I'd like to figure out what's wrong. Anyone have a clue to give me about this? Thanks, -- T Just my dumb luck, but the Ubuntu updates cause me quite a bit of grief compared to Windows updates, and since I'm less familiar with Linux, it takes longer to sort things out, compounding the problem. -- TimothyB TimothyB's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4868 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66495 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

apt-get update is the same as clicking the "reload" button in synaptic. If you have synaptic open, or another instant of apt-get is running you can indeed you get the "lock" error. Only one program at the time is allowed to edit the db. You also get the error when you have insufficient permission (aka running it as user not root) sudo apt-get update on a terminal ask your password and let you type it in, however it will not show that you are entering something. -- qball qball's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32031 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66463 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Thanks Ralph. By "run apt-get update' I take it that you mean I do that from the Terminal? If I try it I get an error 'Could not open lock file' and if I try 'sudo apt-get update' it asks me for my password but will not then let me type it in. I know Ubuntu is free and it seems churlish to complain about it but it has wasted so much of my time this last three years, I really wouldn't want to publish my thoughts about those who produced it! An OS should be an interface between the user, ie human being, and the PC, ie machine. Ubuntu clearly fails that test for the vast majority of computer users.
