Yes, I see those settings. Which setting would alleviate the problem I
am having with a Raspberry Pi pausing often for as long as 30 seconds or
so when synced? Or I do I have another problem?

Once they loose sync, sometimes weird things happen. But if your seeing
that large of a pause, it is most likely network related.

As long as you don't draw too much power from the USB ports, you should
be able to run all USB ports at the same time..even add a hub and
run more.

After doing lots of swapping things around, I have determined that
having 2 Raspberry Pies plugged into the same DAC (In this case a Teac
Ud-301), one into the USB port and 1 into the Coaxial port will cause
this problem only when the two players are synchronized. If I am just
playing each Rpie and they are not synced, they play just fine. The
problem is very noticeable at 192Khz material.

Now that I understand it, I can just avoid this. You may be able to
explain this phenomenon, as I cannot.

[SlimDevices: Unix] Correctly handle USB Speakers with piCorePlayer (6.0.0)?

2020-06-04 Thread carsten_h

Hello!

I have a piCorePlayer 6 installation with LMS and to use it also as a
headless player I attached USB Harmon Kardon Soundsticks to it.
To get good results for volume I had to use alsamixer:
30579

I saved it using the website:
30580

If I am not using alsamixer the music is nearly off at 50% volume
setting, it is at normal hearing volume when I use 85% volume setting.
At 100% is is a little bit louder. This is a very strange setting, so I
used alsamixer to use the whole volume control and not only a part of
it.

Because I not always use the Soundsticks, I am switching them off. But
after switching them back on the values for alsamixer are switched to
this:
30581

If I am doing a restart of squeezelite then, nothing changes. The value
for alsamixer is not restored.
Also if I am doing a reboot of the whole Pi nothing is restored.

What do I have to do to get the alsamixer value back after switching on
the speakers and after a reboot?

This are the values I used on the squeezelite page:
Audio output device settings: USB audio
Output settings: hw:CARD=SoundSticks,DEV=0
These are the possible values there:
30582

ALSA setting: 80-4--1-

What do I have to do to handle this correctly? What I am doing wrong?

Yep, it was :)

I run two pi into the same dac, one is pCP player via USB and the other
RaspiOS (squuezelite Digione) into a co-ax rca.

I have not tried syncing, but will give it a go later today, or
tomorrow.

I would suggest a fresh install for both pi--only a few minutes.

I think I have seen some debate about which player one should use as
Master but that might be a mis-memory , you could always
swapping them over :)

As I had indicated, I ONLY have the problem when Syncing, otherwise they
both play just fine. I have tried different Rpies and have swapped the
Master for syncing, and it doesn't seem to matter. The Player on the USB
will always play perfectly, regardless of being a Master or Not. It's
the Player on the Coax that will Pause. And at 192Khz (Hi Bit Rate
material), it will be paused much longer than it will Play And it
may be Specific to my DAC.

If your system is only a player, then the on/off switch is a cheap/easy
option. No need to shutdown the system

If your system is also enabling LMS in piCorePlayer, then you need to do
a controlled shutdown before killing the power.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] ADAU1701 with piCorePlayer?

2020-06-04 Thread sound

Hello,

I try to get an ADAU1701 (Sure DAC) running with:
- Raspberry Pi Zero Wh
- piCorePlayer6.0.0.img
***
Planned system:
Logitech Media Server (LMS)
Raspberry Pi 4 with piCorePlayer -> LAN -> Router -> WLAN...
Speaker right
…WLAN -> Squeezelite (Raspberry Pi Zero Wh with piCorePlayer)
-> i2s -> ADAU1701 (Sure DAC) -> 2 way amplifier -> 2 way speaker
Speaker left
…WLAN -> Squeezelite (Raspberry Pi Zero Wh with piCorePlayer)
-> i2s -> ADAU1701 (Sure DAC) -> 2 way amplifier -> 2 way speaker
***

Following steps I have done to get Squeezelite running with ADAU1701
(Sure DAC) :
- Write image to sd card
- Copy following files to sd card with windows explorer
- wpa_supplicant.conf (with ssid and psk), path “pcp_boot/”
(to get wlan access to Raspberry Pi Zero Wh)
- adau1701-i2s.dtbo, path “pcp_boot/overlays/“
(adau1701-i2s.dtbo from following source:

...github.com/fvzeppelin/ADAU1701-I2S-Audio-Driver-for-Raspberry-Pi)
- Change file content of “pcp_boot/config.txt”
- Search following line and comment with hash:
#dtparam=audio=on
- Add the following line at the end of the file:
dtoverlay=adau1701-i2s

After starting Raspberry Pi Squeezelite is not running.

Which settings on Squeezelite are necessary?

I changed follow Squeezelite settings:
(- Audio output device settings: Analog audio (default, no change))
- Output setting: sysdefault:CARD=Output (default: hw:CARD=ALSA)
- Max sample rate (-r): 48000
- Upsample setting (-R): vLX

After saving, Squeezelite is running.

- When LMS sends music to “Speaker right”, there is sound, but with a
lot of noise.
- For test, LMS sends to synchronized speaker group with bluetooth
speaker and “Speaker right”, bluetooth speaker has sound with no noise.
- “Speaker right” test with Volumio image and changes for ADAU1701 (Sure
DAC):
-> Sound with no noise when Volumio is source of sound
-> Music with a lot of noise, when Volumio works as Squeezelite
player and get sound from LMS.

I have no idea to solve the noise problem, could anyone help me, please?

Well, I was curious about this problem being DAC dependent, so I hooked
up my Cambridge Dac Magic 100 and was able to reproduce the problem. So,
it is not DAC Specific to my Teac.

That sounds like deep digging inside the system.

I found out, that it is enough to call (thanks for the idea "Man in a

sudo alsactl restore

after switching on the speakers. So I can write an automation in Home
Assistant to not only switch on the speakers, but also to call this
command via ssh. This should be working.

I have installed another sd card with Volumio (with changes described
from MKSounds).
Then I have sound without noise.
When I put the other sd card with piCorePlayer into raspberry I get
sound with noise (no other changes in hw, wiring or ADAU1701 config).

Because of that I thought there must be a problem with piCorePlayer
settings, is that conclusion right?

I'm a beginner with ADAU1701 and i2s so maybe there are typical beginner
failures.

Many thanks for your support.
