Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: piCorePlayer 2.00
Hi, I am a happy and long time user of Picoreplayer. I still used v. 1.15e till this week without any issues or problems. I noticed there is a complete new version 2.04. So I wanted to give it a try and installed the image file on the SD card of my RPI2. All went smooth and the sound is great. But . I have the same issue back again I had a couple of years ago (it was solved then). After a few hours playing I get the strange static noise. I have to reboot PcP to hear my music again. I did not found anything about it in this topic but I saw that version 2.04 has A new tweak for problematic USB-DACs - might help if USB DAC looses connection after prolonged use. Unfortunately the tweak did not solve this problem for me. Adrian, My hummingboard i2eX arrived today. I flashed the image file to a 16GB micro sdcard. SOA was installed automatically within 20 minutes. After choosing hw:CARD=DAC in the Audio Device box for my Sabre Hifimediy USB-dac and a restart, the hummingboard appeared in LMS and I coulld play my music. Wonderful sound! Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCoPlayer = Squeezelite on Microcore linux. .An embedded OS in RAM with Squeezelite
Hi Steen, I've tested V1.08. My DAC is Hifymediy SABRE USB DAC. Nothing has changed for me. Still the same problems (digital noise/cracking on 16b44K & 24b44K files) When I use sysdefault:CARD=DAC all files are playing fine, but all music (16b44K, 24b44K, 24b48K, 24b88K & 24b96K) is played as 16b48K. When I use hw:CARD=DAC or plughw:CARD=DAC 24b48K, 24b88K & 24b96K files are playing fine (24b48K is played as 24b48K, 24b88K is played as 24b96K, 24b96K is played as 24b96K) 16b44K & 24b44K are played with digital noise/cracks. So I'll stick by the custom made image "Willem1" which plays all files fine with the exception of 24b88K. Ive done the test with V1.06 and added dwc_otg.fiq_split_enable=0 in /boot/cmdline.txt DAC: Hifimediy Sabre DAC (old model with TE7022L chip, does not support 88Khz) Command line: -o plughw:CARD=DAC,DEV=0 -n piCorePlayer And I tried the option -a 16::24_3:1 -r 96000 as suggested by al3ph in the topic message #374. Results: 16&24b 44K: still static pulses/crackles while playing back 24b 48K, 88K & 96K: no issues I also tried also the sueezelite upsample option and added -u X. However no better results. I would suggest you buy the new Hifymediy Sabre U2 DAC for testing purposes. The U2 uses the SA9023 USB receiver chip from SAVITECH (not to be confused with the DAC chip ES9023). It accepts 32Khz, 44.1Khz, 48Khz, 88.2Khz and 96Khz inputs at 16 and 24bit. Including postage from China to Denmark I think you can get it for the US$ 80 Maybe you can send a PM to soundcheck and ask him for an advise. I've tested V1.06 (Hifimediy Sabre Dac) USB. (-o plughw:CARD=DAC,DEV=0 -n piCorePlayer) Results: 16/44.1 - Loud continuous static sound in the background 24/44.1 - Loud continuous static sound in the background 24/48 - No problem 24/88 - No problem 24/96 - No problem Version "Willem1" still gives the best results (only 24/88 plays with static noise/sound) all other files play OK. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCoPlayer = Squeezelite on Microcore linux. .An embedded OS in RAM with Squeezelite
Hi Steen, I did the same tests with version 1.0. I got the same results. Only 44100 files are playing with digital noise/clicks/pops/stuttering. All other files play ok. I suddenly realised that I had never tested V1.0 because of vacation. The last version I used was the testversion you specially made for me. It was named 'willem1" with date 26-05-2013. In this test version all my files were playing ok with the exeption of 24b88K. But that was because the HifymeDIY dac does not support 88K. So I'm a little confused now. Hope this helps. Gr. I got same results. 24b48 & 24b96 are both playing perfect now. Only 24b88K stutters in de first 5-10 seconds and after that it seems to play fine (same as hw) If don't give any -a settings it makes no difference now. In V09 I only got 16b48K without the -a settings. Now 24b48 & 24b96 are detected correctly and playing without any problems. Only 24b88K files are stuttering in the first 5-10 seconds. 24b88K files are still detected as 24b96K when I do cat. Musical Fidelity V-DAC II Both hw and plughw are working now. All files are detected correctly. But I don't have a good feeling listening for longer time. It's of course much better then in v09 but I think the sound is not stable and clean. When I compare the original CD sound with the stream (it makes no difference if I use 16b44 or 24b48/88/96) there is a difference. When listening to the Pi hicks/pops are hearable who are not in te original CD. No distortion or clicks just hicks/pops. I don't better way to explane it. Hope this helps. However I don't have any linux knowledge. Unfortunately it's too complicated for me to try all your solutions and settings. I use the RPI to have "a backup" when my Squeezebox Touch stops working. I only use the Pi as "enduser" with the out of the box working img of piCoreplayer (thank you Steen) which includes Squeezelite (thank you Adrian). I can copy and past commands with help off all you great guys on this forum to try out some things. I always thought that Squeezelite with default settings detected the bitrate of the stream automatically and send it unchanged to my usb DAC so I can listen to 24b96K streams in superb studio soundquality. You reported that this wasn't so. My conclusion is that all RPi owners who are using the default settings probably think they are listening to 24b96K on their usb DAC but they only hear 16b48K. I have hope that clever guys like Adrian and Steen will come with an "out of the box" working solution soon. For the time being I'm going to listen to my Squeezebox Touch with Misical Fidelity V-DAC II which is a great combination and is sounding superb with 24bit 96Khz files. Hi Triode With default values my Hifimedia Sabre DAC is playing great. A very clean sound. The issue is that with default values 24b96K files are playing only in 16b48K . As reported earlier by by hagensieker. When I do cat during playing "cat /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params" I get the following values: access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED format: S16_LE subformat: STD channels: 2 rate: 48000 (48000/1) period_size: 1024 buffer_size: 16384 When I use command: -o hw:CARD=DAC,DEV=0 -a 20:4:24_3:1 -d all=debug I get following values: access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED format: S24_3LE subformat: STD channels: 2 rate: 96000 (96000/1) period_size: 480 buffer_size: 1920 Looks like music is playing now in real 24b96K studio quality. However music is sounding weird then. Some kind of Donald Duck sound. It sounds distorted and it is not pleasant to listen to. Do you have any suggestion? This is what I get: tc@box:~$ cat /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED format: S16_LE subformat: STD channels: 2 rate: 48000 (48000/1) period_size: 1024 buffer_size: 16384 tc@box:~$ Does this mean that my DAC plays in 16b 48K? Hi, Adding 'smsc95xx.turbo_mode=n' to cmdline.txt did not make any difference. It did not solve my problems. I still get the static noise after a few hours of playing. My MF V-DAC II still is not working properly. It plays music but only with clicks/pops. Sorry I have no better news. Hi adrinr I've also added 'smsc95xx.turbo_mode=n' to cmdline.txt and I'm testing right now. Lets hope that this solves all our problems. If so I suppose Steen will release a new version of piCorePlayer. Thanks adrianr, Steen and Slackhead. And of course Triode! Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCoPlayer = Squeezelite on Microcore linux. .An embedded OS in RAM with Squeezelite
Hi Steen, I've tested version 09 especially on the connection issues I had. With version 07 Picoreplayer did not play when LMS started. I had to use the power button in LMS or a reboot of my RPI first. A second problem was that after a few hours of playing I suddenly got a strange static noise. I have good news both problems are solved with this new version 09. You did an excellent good job Steen. Thanks for all the good work! My HiFimeDIY Sabre USB DAC 96khz/24b is still playing very fine. I love the high end sound quality. My Musical Fidelity V-DAC II still does not work (music is hearable but only with clicks and pops). Thanks again. Hi Steen, I've teste the new version last night. It does not solve the connection problems. Now Picoreplayer is available as a player when LMS starts up. However is does not play. I have to use the button power of and power on again in LMS. Then picoplayer starts to play. And I still have the noise issue. After a few hours of playing I get a strange static noise on the music. In this case I also have to use the button power of and power on again in LMS to get a clean sound. First the bad: Above settings did not make any difference. So I've given up trying my V-DAC II to work. Reading on the internet forums learns me that this is a known problem and probably has to do with the firmware/hardware of the RPi. And now the good news. I remembered I had an old Edirol ua-1ex USB DAC I did not use anymore since I have the MF V-DAC II. I would give it a try with: -o hw:0,0 -n piCorePlayer -a 80:4 And it's unbelievebale but it playes like a charm. No clicks or pops, just wonderful music. It works ok with 16b 44K and 24b 44k. But 24b 48/88/96K won't play. I tried all the micro swithes at the bottom but no luck. I tried plugging it out switching back to the analog 3.5 mm jack te see what happenes. No problem at all. Without changing the settings my Raspberry Pi now plays with USB dac or analog output. The only thing I had to do was plugging out one of the two and do a reboot. Thanks again for trying to help me out. Hi Steen, Question 1: I use cat5e cable. No wifi. Question 2: After changing back to analog settings using option 2 followed by option 5 the sound was only playing throught the hdmi cable of the connected TV monitor. I had to pull out the HDMI cable and do a reboot to get back the sound on the 3.5mm jack output. Ill report back when Ive tested the settings with the increased alsa buffer size. No luck. I only hear digital noise (some clicks and pops) no music. It's strange that after that the analog output also did not work anymore. I got the following error massage: "amixer: Unable to find simple control 'PCM'=0". I tried menu option 2 to get back analog output but that did not work. I had to siwtch to another card with XBMC openelec to fix it by selecting analog output in the system settings for audio. Do you recognize this problem and if so can you make a menu option to fix the analog output when it's broke? Another question: would it be possible that the MF DAC II is not compatible with the Raspberry Pi? Did anybody else got it to play?
