Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: piCorePlayer 2.00

2016-04-08 Thread Nerdwebber

Hi,
I am a happy and long time user of Picoreplayer. I still used v. 1.15e
till this week without any issues or problems.
I noticed there is a complete new version 2.04. So I wanted to give it
a try and installed the image file on the SD card of my RPI2.
All went smooth and the sound is great. But………. I have the same issue
back again I had a couple of years ago (it was solved then). After a
few hours playing I get the strange static noise. I have to reboot PcP
to hear my music again. I did not found anything about it in this topic
but I saw that version 2.04 has “ A new tweak for problematic
USB-DACs - might help if USB DAC looses connection after prolonged
use.”
Unfortunately the tweak did not solve this problem for me.

I've installed the new image on my Hummingboard. All went well. As you
suggested I've removed the alsa-utils. The volume issue with my
Hifimediy USB DAC is solved. It plays as loud as my Rpi now.

Sorry once again. The only thing I am able to do is flash the img file

The image of Oct. 11 2014 does NOT have the volume issue. So I still use
this version for my Hifimediy Sabre USB dac.

Yes soundcheck you are completely right. You have found out what's te
problem. Compliments!
It's indeed a problem of my "el cheapo DIY USB-DAC"
When I connect my Musical Fidelity V-DAC II to the usb port of my
Hummingboard the volume is just as loud as with the Rpi. No problem at
all!
Just one question: why does the Rpi with SOA does not have this lower
volume issue with " el cheapo DIY USB-DACs"

Hi Triode

Thanks for the new img file of SOA.
I've installed it on my Hummingboard i2eX.
All went well. However the volume level is much lower than before.
l have to put the volume control of my amplifier on 70/80% to get the
same level as I had before on 25%.
I use an usb DAC.

Hi Bob,
I checked the smb.conf file. There are three shares in it: [storage],
[share_rw] & [share_ro].
Yesterday I could indeed see those three shares in windows. Today I
don't see anything at all in my windows explorer. Very strange. I looks
like samba is not running. I checked and unchecked the sambabox in Soa
several times and rebooted after every change. No luck

There's no [mnt] section in the smb.conf
Thx

1. Yes I use the same name of the Workgroup in Windows and in setup
Samba Server in Soa (Workgroup).

2. Yes I've mounted the USB drive. It' is NTFS. In SOA is under File

/mnt/disk1
/dev/sda1 (ntfs-3g) active

3. Yes I did a reboot my HB and my windows PC afterward.

My hummingboard i2eX arrived today. I flashed the image file to a 16GB

Because the CT "is less well supported by arch linux and so is higher
risk of not working at some point... " I'll choose for the Hummingboard
(as a Linux NOOB). Maybe it's not the best choice when we talk about

I totally agree. I especially like PiCorePlayer because it's simplicity.
That is the strenght of this wonderfull piece of software. You don't
have to be a Linux professor to get it working on the RPi. I'm using a
Hifimediy Sabre usb dac. It plays (with default settings) 16 & 24 bit
44, 48, 88 & 96 Khz flac really excellent. I would like to upgrade to a
wandboard dual or quad but I'm hesitating because it's so complicated
to get it working.

Hi Steen

It's some time ago that I used a new version of your picoplayer. For the
first time in months I've tested the latest version (1.15e).
And wow this is awesome, all flac files are playing fine now. No hick
ups or digital noise anymore in 44k files. I'm very happy with this new
version.
I still use the Hifymediy Sabre Usb Dac.

Settings:
USB audio
Output settings: default

16b44K, 24b44K, 24b48K, 24b88K & 24b96K are all playing like a charme
without any distortion.

I am very glad now. Thank you very much. The Raspberry Pi is now an
excellent replacement for the Squeezebox Touch.
I also like the the web page to configure piCorePlayer.

Great job.
Thanks again

Best greetings

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCoPlayer = Squeezelite on Microcore linux. .An embedded OS in RAM with Squeezelite

2013-11-13 Thread Nerdwebber

Hi Steen,

I've tested V1.08.
My DAC is Hifymediy SABRE USB DAC.
Nothing has changed for me. Still the same problems (digital
noise/cracking on 16b44K & 24b44K files)

When I use sysdefault:CARD=DAC
all files are playing fine, but all music (16b44K, 24b44K, 24b48K,
24b88K & 24b96K) is played as 16b48K.

When I use hw:CARD=DAC or plughw:CARD=DAC
24b48K, 24b88K & 24b96K files are playing fine (24b48K is played as
24b48K, 24b88K is played as 24b96K, 24b96K is played as 24b96K)
16b44K & 24b44K are played with digital noise/cracks.

So I'll stick by the custom made image "Willem1" which plays all files
fine with the exception of 24b88K.

Hope this helps

Take care
Willem

I've also the HifyMeDiy Sabre DAC. As far as I know all the last
versions of Picoreplayer have the crackling (with 44.1 Khz files)
problem. I suppose Steen is still working on it.
There is a special custom version with the name "Willem1" . This version
plays all kind of files without any crackling with the exeption of 88.2
Khz files. This is because 88.2Khz is NOT supported by this DAC.
Hope this helps.

Hi Steen,
Glad to have you back working on Picoreplayer again.
I’ve done the test with V1.06 and added dwc_otg.fiq_split_enable=0 in
/boot/cmdline.txt

DAC:
Hifimediy Sabre DAC (old model with TE7022L chip, does not support
88Khz)
Command line:
-o plughw:CARD=DAC,DEV=0 -n piCorePlayer
And I tried the option -a 16::24_3:1 -r 96000 as suggested by al3ph in
the topic message #374.

Results:
16&24b 44K: still static pulses/crackles while playing back
24b 48K, 88K & 96K: no issues

I also tried also the sueezelite upsample option and added -u X. However
no better results.

I would suggest you buy the new Hifymediy Sabre U2 DAC for testing
purposes.
The U2 uses the SA9023 USB receiver chip from SAVITECH (not to be
confused with the DAC chip ES9023). It accepts 32Khz, 44.1Khz, 48Khz,
88.2Khz and 96Khz inputs at 16 and 24bit.
Including postage from China to Denmark I think you can get it for the
US$ 80
Maybe you can send a PM to soundcheck and ask him for an advise. He is
the one who invented the TOUCH TOOLBOX 3.0 for the SBT.

I agree. Version "Willem1" plays all kind of files without any issue
with the exeption of 24b88K! 24b88K plays with some kind of digital
cracks.

I've tested V1.06 (Hifimediy Sabre Dac) USB.
(-o plughw:CARD=DAC,DEV=0 -n piCorePlayer)
Results:
16/44.1 - Loud continuous static sound in the background
24/44.1 - Loud continuous static sound in the background
24/48 - No problem
24/88 - No problem
24/96 - No problem

Version "Willem1" still gives the best results (only 24/88 plays with
static noise/sound) all other files play OK.

Hope this helps.

Hi Steen,

Both are playing perfect with willem.img

Output is exactly the same:

I've tested both setting with 16b44K & 24b44K
Same results: music is playing with digital noise/clicks.

Results with both setting for 16b44K & 24b44K
access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED
format: S24_3LE
subformat: STD
channels: 2
rate: 44100 (44100/1)

In my opinion 24b44K is played correctly as S24_3LE/44100.
Why is it not sounding properly then?

When I use this setting piCorePlayer is not visible in LMS.
When I use:
-o default:CARD=DAC -n piCorePlayer

44100 plays fine

But with this setting everything is playing by default 16b/48K

Hi Steen,

I did the same tests with version 1.0.
I got the same results. Only 44100 files are playing with digital
noise/clicks/pops/stuttering. All other files play ok.
I suddenly realised that I had never tested V1.0 because of vacation.
The last version I used was the testversion you specially made for me.
It was named 'willem1" with date 26-05-2013.
In this test version all my files were playing ok with the exeption of
24b88K. But that was because the HifymeDIY dac does not support 88K.

So I'm a little confused now. Hope this helps.

Hi Steen

Thank you for the new version.

I've tested V1.05
I used following string for HiFimeDIY Sabre USB DAC:
-o plughw:CARD=DAC,DEV=0 -n piCorePlayer

I've tested in this sequence
24b88K is transferred now (automatically ?) to S24_3LE 96000 and
playes fine now (was stuttering in V1.0)
24b48K plays fine as S24_3LE 48000
24b96K plays fine as S24_3LE 96000
24b44K plays stuttering with digital noise as S24_3LE 44100
16b44K plays stuttering with digital noise as S24_3LE 44100

Here the outpot of cat /proc/asound/card*/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params
in the same sequence:

tc@box:~$ cat /proc/asound/card*/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params
access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED
format: S24_3LE
subformat: STD
channels: 2
rate: 96000 (96000/1)
period_size: 960
buffer_size: 3841
closed

tc@box:~$ cat /proc/asound/card*/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params
access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED
format: S24_3LE
subformat: STD
channels: 2
rate: 48000 (48000/1)
period_size: 480
buffer_size: 1920
closed

tc@box:~$ cat /proc/asound/card*/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params
access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED
format: S24_3LE
subformat: STD
channels: 2
rate: 96000 (96000/1)
period_size: 960
buffer_size: 3841
closed

tc@box:~$ cat /proc/asound/card*/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params
access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED
format: S24_3LE
subformat: STD
channels: 2
rate: 44100 (44100/1)
period_size: 441
buffer_size: 1764
closed

tc@box:~$ cat /proc/asound/card*/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params
access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED
format: S24_3LE
subformat: STD
channels: 2
rate: 44100 (44100/1)
period_size: 441
buffer_size: 1764
closed

Conclusion:
24bit 48K 88K & 96K are playing perfect without any pops or stuttering.
All 44100 files are stuttering now

Hope this helps!

Would it be possible to upsample ONLY the 88.2 Khz files in LMS or

Hi Steen, yes I totally agree. I'm also glad that it wasn't Picoreplayer
that caused the problem. It proves you did a wonderful job. As I wrote
you before 48 & 96 Khz files are playing very fine.
I emailed the manufacturer of The HifimeDIY Sabre DAC and he confirmed
that 88.2Khz wasn't supported.
He wrote the following:
"yes the Te7022 does not support 88.2khz.
however, we are just about the finish the next batch of these dac's, and
we have switched to another USB chip, SA9023 (not to be confused with
the dac chip es9023)
and this chip accepts 88khz!"

Hi John,

Thanks for your answer. Actually Steen has send me a test.img of
piCorePlayer. He did a great job because I can listen now (RPi with
Hifimediy Sabre DAC) to music in 16b44K, 24b44K, 24b48K & 24b96K sound
quality. The Pi plays sensational good now with these files. Really
audiophile sound, a pleasure to listen to. The only remaining problem
still are the 24b88K files who are playing stuttering. Hopefully Steen
finds a solution for this problem too.

Hi Steen

I tried -a :::0
For The Sabre DAC & V-DAC II this has no effect. Everything seems to be
the same.

I also tried (as you suggested earlier)
-o hw:0 -n test1
-o hw:0 -a :::0 -n test2
-o plughw:0 -n test3
-o plughw:0 -a :::0 -n test4
With these settings both DAC's are working. However no solution for the
playback problems.

So I"ll keep my V-DAC II connected to my Squeezebox Touch and stop
testing this DAC in combination with the RPi. Results are not bad now
with your latest test img (much better than in V09) but I keep hearing
occasional pops.
The combination RPi and Hifimediy Sabre DAC plays sensational good with
16b44K, 24b44K, 24b48K & 24b96K files now. Really audiophile sound, a
pleasure to listen to. The only problem are the 24b88K files who are
playing stuttering. Hope you'll find a solution for this. I would
gratefully do some testing on that part but not for long because I'm
going on vacation next week.

Thanks again for your efforts.

Take care

Hifimediy Sabre DAC:
I tried plughw instead of hw. I got same results. 24b48 & 24b96 are both
playing perfect now. Only 24b88K stutters in de first 5-10 seconds and
after that it seems to play fine (same as hw)
If don't give any -a settings it makes no difference now. In V09 I only
got 16b48K without the -a settings. Now 24b48 & 24b96 are detected
correctly and playing without any problems. Only 24b88K files are
stuttering in the first 5-10 seconds. 24b88K files are still detected as
24b96K when I do cat.

Musical Fidelity V-DAC II
Both hw and plughw are working now. All files are detected correctly.
But I don't have a good feeling listening for longer time. It's of
course much better then in v09 but I think the sound is not stable and
clean. When I compare the original CD sound with the stream (it makes no
difference if I use 16b44 or 24b48/88/96) there is a difference. When
listening to the Pi hicks/pops are hearable who are not in te original
CD. No distortion or clicks just hicks/pops. I don't better way to
explane it.
Hope this helps.
Take care

Hi Steen, did you read the PM about the Musical V-Dav II I send you? I'm
testing right now for a few hours. I still get some occasional pops. I
increased the buffersize to 800 with the following command:
-o hw:CARD=M2496,DEV=0 -n piCorePlayer -a 800:4
Seems better but I still get some pops. After that I tried:-o
plughw:CARD=M2496,DEV=0 -n piCorePlayer -a 800:4. Seems to work also
but don't know yet 100%. I don't have time today for further testing.
I'll try the new settings for sabre dac tomorrow and report back. I
really think you have made great effort with the new test release of
piCoreplayer. Thanks again!

Thank you John for your explanation. However I don't have any linux
knowledge. Unfortunately it's too complicated for me to try all your
solutions and settings. I use the RPI to have "a backup" when my
Squeezebox Touch stops working. I only use the Pi as "enduser" with the
out of the box working img of piCoreplayer (thank you Steen) which
includes Squeezelite (thank you Adrian). I can copy and past commands
with help off all you great guys on this forum to try out some things.
I always thought that Squeezelite with default settings detected the
bitrate of the stream automatically and send it unchanged to my usb DAC
so I can listen to 24b96K streams in superb studio soundquality. You
reported that this wasn't so. My conclusion is that all RPi owners who
are using the default settings probably think they are listening to
24b96K on their usb DAC but they only hear 16b48K. I have hope that
clever guys like Adrian and Steen will come with an "out of the box"
working solution soon. For the time being I'm going to listen to my
Squeezebox Touch with Misical Fidelity V-DAC II which is a great
combination and is sounding superb with 24bit 96Khz files.

Hi Streen
No luck. When I use this commands I only get silence!
Best settings for good clean sounds are:
-o default:CARD=DAC -n piCorePlayer -a 80:4
However then my Dac plays only in 16b48K.

Hi Triode
With default values my Hifimedia Sabre DAC is playing great. A very
clean sound.
The issue is that with default values 24b96K files are playing only in
16b48K . As reported earlier by by hagensieker.
When I do cat during playing "cat
/proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params" I get the following values:
access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED
format: S16_LE
subformat: STD
channels: 2
rate: 48000 (48000/1)
period_size: 1024
buffer_size: 16384

When I use command:
-o hw:CARD=DAC,DEV=0 -a 20:4:24_3:1 -d all=debug
I get following values:
access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED
format: S24_3LE
subformat: STD
channels: 2
rate: 96000 (96000/1)
period_size: 480
buffer_size: 1920
Looks like music is playing now in real 24b96K studio quality.
However music is sounding weird then. Some kind of “Donald Duck” sound.
It sounds distorted and it is not pleasant to listen to.
Do you have any suggestion?

subformat: STD
channels: 2
rate: 48000 (48000/1)
period_size: 1024
buffer_size: 16384
tc@box:~$

Does this mean that my DAC plays in 16b 48K?
But how do I get 24b96K then?

Hi Steen,
I have bad news and goods news. First the bad:
Above settings did not make any difference. So I've given up trying my
V-DAC II to work. Reading on the internet forums learns me that this is
a known problem and probably has to do with the firmware/hardware of the
RPi.

And now the good news. I remembered I had an old Edirol ua-1ex USB DAC I
did not use anymore since I have the MF V-DAC II.
I would give it a try with:
-o hw:0,0 -n piCorePlayer -a 80:4
And it's unbelievebale but it playes like a charm. No clicks or pops,
just wonderful music. It works ok with 16b 44K and 24b 44k. But 24b
48/88/96K won't play. I tried all the micro swithes at the bottom but no
luck.

I tried plugging it out switching back to the analog 3.5 mm jack te see
what happenes. No problem at all. Without changing the settings my
Raspberry Pi now plays with USB dac or analog output. The only thing I
had to do was plugging out one of the two and do a reboot.

Thanks again for trying to help me out.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCoPlayer = Squeezelite on Microcore linux. .An embedded OS in RAM with Squeezelite

2013-03-19 Thread Nerdwebber

Hi Steen,

Question 1:
I use cat5e cable. No wifi.

Question 2:
After changing back to analog settings using option 2 followed by option
5 the sound was only playing throught the hdmi cable of the connected TV
monitor. I had to pull out the HDMI cable and do a reboot to get back
the sound on the 3.5mm jack output.

I’ll report back when I’ve tested the settings with the increased alsa
buffer size.

Willem

Hi Steen,

I tried both settings. No luck. I can hear the music now through the DAC
but with terrible pops and clicks.
So I suppose the V-DAC II is not compatable with the usb port of the
Raspberry Pi.

Thanks for helping me how to use your setup menu!

Hi Steen, thanks for your help. No luck. I only hear digital noise (some
clicks and pops) no music. It's strange that after that the analog
output also did not work anymore. I got the following error massage:
"amixer: Unable to find simple control 'PCM'=0". I tried menu option 2
to get back analog output but that did not work.
I had to siwtch to another card with XBMC openelec to fix it by
selecting analog output in the system settings for audio. Do you
recognize this problem and if so can you make a menu option to fix the
analog output when it's broke?
Another question: would it be possible that the MF DAC II is not
compatible with the Raspberry Pi?
Did anybody else got it to play?

Hi, I'm a NOOB but it works on the anolog output op my RPI.
This is great. I can play my music now on my Raspberry PI. Great job
thank you. I've tried to get my DAC to work. It's a Musical Fidelity
V-DAC II. When I play with LMS/Squeezelite on my laptop it plays fine
with the default settings on the usb output of the laptop.
I managed to log in with putty. I see the following output:

Can you please help me and tell me how i can get it to work?

What do I have to fill in option 4 of the settings menu?

Greetz,
Willem
