Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCoPlayer = Squeezelite on Microcore linux. .An embedded OS in RAM with Squeezelite

2013-11-15 Thread hoffsta

My experience with 1.08 has been generally positive with just one small
issue.

I've tested on both my DACs (PCM2704 & HiFiMeDIY Sabre). I simply
changed the initial default output settings from "sysdefault:CARD=ALSA"
to "sysdefault:CARD=DAC" and I've had no playback issues at all. No pops
or clicks on either card. I must qualify that I only have 16/44
material.

As for the Wi-FI, there may be a bug in the script, or maybe I just had
a bad SD write. I ran through the setup menu with the Edimax ew-7811un
and was able to scan networks & add my password, however after it told
me my credentials were being sent the script just hung. I was unable to
SSH into the Pi on either the ethernet port or the wlan, even after a
reboot. I had to reformat the SD card to get it going again. The second
try worked fine. On another unit, I tried to disconnect from the network
I was connected to and again ended up with a non-responsive script. This
time just a reboot cleared it up. I never had this problem in previous
versions.

I tried again with the troublesome Ralink RT5370 and finally achieved
success! However the connection was not long lived and I've just decided
that these adapters I bought for $6 are total junk and are incapable of
running for longer than 5 minutes without shutting down. I recommend
that no one buy the no-name Ralink adapters off ebay. A brand name
adapter with the same chipset may work fine.

Also thanks for fixing the volume issue- I now have full volume without
having to enter "amixer set PCM 400 unmute" on each reboot. This is
another step towards making Picoreplayer an actual appliance for
distributed music that just works. Thank you for all your work on this
project!!!

Initially, I thought it would be great to have each device act as an
independent Airplay receiver. I had this working fairly well with a
build based on Raspbian. See here:
http://pi-fidelity.blogspot.ca/2013/05/pifi-mini-tutorial-part-one.html

I never considered the possibility of LMS hijacking the Airplay stream
and broadcasting that to each Squeezelite instance. This would actually
probably work better. How would I go about adding an Airplay stream as a
favorite in LMS? Great idea BTW!

I've tried a number of other options with varying degrees of success.
Picoreplayer is the only one I've found that is nearly "appliance" level
reliable. I can't remember specifically why Squeezeplug didn't work for
me but I may investigate again.

This is what I've been using it for too. I put mine in old '80s
boomboxes mostly. I also built a patio stereo inside a waterproof
sprinkler box. So far, these devices are working really well.

I am having a bit of trouble with the boombox in my kitchen. It is
always plugged in, so the Pi is always running because it has a separate
power supply from the stereo and they don't get switched off together.
After a couple days of continuous up time, and following an overnight of
inactivity, when I try to send music to that Pi, it won't play and I
have to unplug it to sort it out. I have no idea what the issue is but
I'm waiting with my fingers crossed that the next release will be a bit
more stable in that regard.

The only other thing I'd like to see is support for Airplay. LMS is a
terrific system but I also use Airfoil which opens up essentially
limitless options for audio sources from my desktop that can be streamed
to an Airplay device.

Well I just tried using the Slim Devices MAC header but LMS wouldn't
even recognize the player. I rebooted the server and the RPi with no
luck. Removing the Spoofed MAC restored all functionality. I guess I'll
stick to what's been working!

Hi Gary, thanks for the info on the MAC address header. I had given up
on changing the MAC Address because I found that spoofing it caused me
to lose the ability to stream any content from mysqueezebox.com apps
like Pandora, Mog, internet radio, etc. Have you tried using any of
these services with the Slim Devices MAC header?

I would get one of the small PCM2704 DACs if you're just looking for a
clean output and don't need audiophile level output. I bought one of
these for $10 and it arrived in about a week from China. It sounds great
and it eliminated the stutter problem I was having with analog output.
Still, it's an extra $10 so I'm hoping the analog issue will get sorted
out eventually.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/251291436057?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Note, this plugs right into the Pi's USB port, making it a little
awkward and fragile. You may want to pick up a short USB extension cable
as well.

Yeah, I have an 800mA charger that will bring up the red LED but doesn't
supply enough power to support the LAN port. Switching to a different
charger solved it. An iPhone USB charger block actually works really
well and is compact.

2013-09-16 Thread hoffsta

Steen, I did experience a slight volume increase when applying the
command you recommended above, however I still find the volume to be
very low on all my picoreplayers. I did a direct comparison of one Pi
with a simple PCM2704 DAC, one Pi via analog output, and my iPhone, all
synced to the same LMS stream. The two picoreplayers have about the same
volume level that is quite low. The iPhone is considerably louder.

I'm wondering how this could be, whether it's a hardware limitation of
the Pi or if it's in software somewhere. I would think if it were
hardware related, I'd notice a difference between DAC vs non-DAC...

Thanks for the reply to my queries above. I made the volume adjustment
you suggested above and I did notice the volume get louder. Is this
change stored to the SD card or do I need to type the command every time

Secondly, I do have option #2 set, to output to the 3.5mm analog jack.
This unit is using the Edimax wireless adapter, which is the exact same
hardware configuration I have setup on two other Pi. The only difference
is that the other two are using DACs and this one is not. Should I try
setting an "-a" option to increase the alsa buffer? What would be
recommended?

I agree with Steen, I've had a really difficult time with power on my

stay connected over Wi-Fi has been solved with a better power supply.
Not necessarily a higher rated output, just a different model.

Awesome. One question on -m option: I've found that using a spoofed mac
address causes mysqueezebox.com apps such as Pandora, Mog , etc to stop
working unless the MAC address matches the network interface card. This
diminishes the potential of such a system. Are you aware of this and do
you know any potential workarounds to enable those apps on spoofed MAC
address clients?

That is interesting- I have an unbranded RT5370 usb dongle and I could

with the Ralink drivers but it will not function for me. Did you need to

If you want to get started quickly with no hassles, I'd recommend
purchasing another WLAN dongle that is fully supported. I spent a lot of

Raspberry Pis are generally a little slower than my desktop players
(SqueezePlay). I had to go into the Logitech Media Server Settings
>Player > Synchronize > Player Audio Delay (ms) and change it to about
75 or 80ms. I still get a constant but subtle shift in timing, almost
like one player is moving closer to me, then further away, but I no
longer have problems with echoing. I hope that helps you!

I don't know if this is a problem with LMS or with Squeezelite but I
don't remember the synchronizing issues being as bad when I was using
Airfoil.

Well good news on the popping I originally experienced after upgrading
to 1.0.5. After a reset of LMS, I've had no more issues after a full day
of listening. All my stuff is 16/44 or even lower internet streams
though. PiCore has finally turned my Pi into a true music streaming
appliance, rather than an frustrating experiment.

I tried "sudo passwd" but it seems this command is for changing the root
password, not the user account.

As for my DAC, it is the HifiMeDiy Sabre USB DAC. It works
out-of-the-box as the default output with with no configuration
necessary! I ran it continuously for at least eight hours today using
PiCore v.1.0 (ALSA 80:4) and was very pleased with the output. I then
updated to 1.0.5 and started to experience fairly regular pops about
every 10 to 30 seconds. After restarting LMS, the pops went away but I
will keep an eye on things. I previously ran RaspyFi and experienced a
lot of popping/clicking and even full-on dropouts so this is a huge
improvement so far. I added my comment to your DAC database.

As for the WiFi, I'm glad the Ralink drivers are now included. It
shouldn't be too much more work to get it running. I found that this
particular chipset was problematic even with the full-featured Raspbian
build. I was unable to connect to my network with the wicd_gui that
seems to work for most dongles. Eventually I got it working by manually
tweaking /etc/network/interfaces and
/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf. It would be nice to figure out
how to do that in Tiny Core but I am a total Linux noob and Tiny Core is
much less documented than standard Raspberry Pi stuff so I'm pretty
stone-walled at this point.

Thanks!

One other thing- the popular Ralink RT5370 chipset is still not working
in 1.05 with your driver update. I don't know how to get this working
but it would be great if we could as I have two of them sitting here
wishing they were PiCorePlayers!

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCoPlayer = Squeezelite on Microcore linux. .An embedded OS in RAM with Squeezelite

2013-07-29 Thread hoffsta

Thank you for creating PiCorePlayer. I tried many other builds to
achieve Squeezelite playback because my WLAN adapter was not supported
by Tiny Core, with varying degrees of success but I never had it fully
working to my liking. I recently received an Edimax adapter and got
PiCorePlayer up and running in a matter of minutes!

I have an issue to sort out though- I want to change the password for my
user account but I get the message: "Bad Password: too weak". Well yes,
it's a weak password but on this device I don't need a complicated one.
I read somewhere that I can edit "/etc/pam.d/passwd" but this location
doesn't exist in this build. Any idea where I can turn off the bad
password checking and what text editor is included if any?

Thanks!

PS: 4 hours uptime so far without a single issue, kick ass!
