For a hole in the wall cabinet I would suggest connectors that can be
screwed on, as soldering in place is difficult and possibly dangerous.
Connectors i.s.o the displayed screw terminal blocks, would alow you
to more easily disconnect the whole and debug an issue on a bench.
Since you already have 2 sets, standardize and document the pinlayout so
you can swap them around without frying a pi.

So the original installer of our house system, installed before I owned

I am thinking of either using terminal blocks to clean it up or phoenix

It takes some time to figure it out and it's not easy to customize so I
used someone else's template. Perhaps I'm missing something when

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Raspberry Pi w/screen as dedicated controller?

2020-03-09 Thread Shart

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who replied. I have implemented
piCorePlayer in my house and it's brilliant.

Here are the first two installations. I just got them installed this
weekend as I had to wait for parts. I'll touch up the drywall and paint
at a later date. You know something is good when the wife tells you she
really likes it.

29661

29662

29663

I am really impressed with piCorePlayer. These are powered by POE. CAT5
ethernet was already present as I'm replacing an ELAN whole house
system. All the wiring is located in my office where I have Raspberry Pi
B+'s with HiFiBerry Dac's for the two zones. I'm using a Dayton
multi-zone amp and wall volume controls that are impedance matched.
Eventually I plan to have 8 Zones. There is no cover or case for the
pi's in-wall installation and they are held in place by magnets.

The installation was inspired by Christian Bleser:
https://christian-bleser.de/raspberry-pi-touch-display-wandeinbau/

Right now for the pi streamers I plan to use chassis with a DIN rail as
I can't think of another solution that'll be simple enough. I don't want
a bunch of individual cases and wall-warts.

Most of the piCorePlayer interface is self explanatory and some is still
a bit confusing. Not totally sure where to get information, but I'm
figuring it out as I go along. I do plan to use a RPi 4 4GB to run LMS
via piCorePlayer. My only niggle is that I find creating playlists to be
cumbersome and I don't have iTunes since I run Linux as my daily
machine.

Thanks gain everyone for your help, this is a fantastic solution.

Shart,

If you can work with a stationary controller, take a look at 'rasptouch'
.
I needed something that looked good enough to allow my hobby to enter
the living room
I bought the case only and put in my own RPI 7" display, pi and dac, to
keep cost down.
If you do not connect it to an amp, you do not really need a dac and its
wire.
I do use it as my LMS, so found I had to wire it to the network to
reliable feed multiple players.
But if used as controller only, or using the local squeezelite player ,
wifi is sufficient in most cases.

As a portable controller we use squeezer on phones and tablets in
parallel, I think it is close enough to jivelite to get it in minutes.
And the 'we' does indeed indicate the less tech savvy members of my
family do use it too without difficulties.

Recently I worked with a pizero-w and a 1.5 inch screen powered from a
powerbank.
And it got me thinking that a portable pi and screen combo could do as a
controller too.
however, an attractive casing for such a set set including batteries is
not an of the shelf product .
But I find it very comfortable to use dedicated hardware buttons , and
it could double up as headphone player.

Let us know what you decide.

[SlimDevices: Unix] Raspberry Pi w/screen as dedicated controller?

2020-02-12 Thread Shart

Hi-

I've spent quite a bit of time looking for a dedicated controller.

I currently have a ELAN system that's very very dated and I'd like to
update or upgrade the system with LMS, PiCorePlayer(s) and some
dedicated 7" controllers that will be wall mounted where the elan
controllers are currently mounted. My current ELAN controllers are
connected by cat5 ethernet so I'd use the existing ethernet for the
controllers. The PiCorePlayers would be located in a central location
with access to cat6, cat5e, speaker wiring and amps for the whole house
system.

Is there a dedicated Jivelite controller distribution anywhere or is
this something I'd have to roll on my own? I did read through @chill
thread, Javelite on a Joggler, and figured that's probably the avenue to
go.
