It should be noted that the [ Wifi Settings ] page generates an encrypted passphrase type wpa_supplicant.conf. This is the new "normal". So if you created your wifi settings via wpa_supplicant.conf on boot partition or insitu upgrade methods (using a password), when you go into [ Wifi Settings ] you need to re-enter password and the country code and press [Save]. This is the quickest way to do from the old to the new. So for using passphrases you don't need to use "#Maintained by user" method. ATM we don't convert wifi passwords to wifi passphrases during a wpa_supplicant.conf on boot partition or insitu upgrade. Yeah, I only noticed an old wifi.db a couple of days ago, have to get rid of that! We don't use or load that file anymore but there may be a copy in your mydata backup. It is save to delete, but you need to a [Backup] to overwrite you old backup file. regards Greg Greg Erskine's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7403 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109286 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
pCP team, The new website is quite nice. Unfortunately the old site still generates a lot of hits on a google search, so consider adding more links to the new website on more pages of the old site so people know they are looking at the old info. Depending on how someone got to the old site, they may stumble around a while before they hit the link to the new site. rmac321's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58482 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109286 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
pCP team, Thanks a bunch for the ability to write our own wpa_supplicant.conf. This now gives us the ability to use the encrypted passphrase instead of plain text. Bonus, we can have more than one network configuration! Thanks for this! For those that take advantage of the encrypted passphrase, remember to delete the commented out plain text password before you cut and paste it into your wpa_supplicant.conf file or it will be readily viewable from the pCP diagnostics pages. Also note that if you did an insitu upgrade, the old plain text wifi.db file is probably still lurking in your home folder. rmac321's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58482 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109286 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

It has been a few days since I did this, but I found I could not do an insitu update directly from 3.22 to 4.0b7. It kept giving me an error (but I didn't record the error at the time it happened). I was able to go 3.22 -> 3.50 and then 3.50 -> 4.0b7. Probably just because of the changes to the new repo location. FWIW, From the thread it looks like others may have upgraded from earlier versions, so perhaps my issue was a temporary obstacle. Thought I should report just in case. rmac321's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58482 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109286 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Now it's running. I tryed every DAC again. Now it's working. The right setup is the HiFiBerry DAC Zero /MiniAMP. This is the first series DAC board, normal DAC. Not the DAC+. With only 26 gpio pin. Since you are using this option, there is an option you might want to add to your config. dtoverlay=sdtweak,poll_once This will keep the system from continually looking for a SDcard, if you run with nothing in the slot. If you put that line in the custom area of config.txt, it will be retained through updates. The Simple version looks like an old card control file left over from upgrades, we no longer use that option. But depending on the version of the kernel that you are running there are different options. In the Standard version of pcp, the settings for any ES90xx dac, just use the hifiberry drivers. The hifiberry driver is just a basic I2S driver, so it works. There is no "official" open source driver for ess products. In the Audio kernel, we have added a driver that was developed by JackofAll. It's a very basic driver, as any of the real control of ESS dacs is protected by NDA's and ESS will not allow for folks to publish an open source driver. I'm not sure how long that driver will be around, since JOA no longer publicly develops, and the kernel structure is changing. There are a few drivers floating around the net (And some distros include it) but that driver violates the ESS license, so we don't include it. Enter the Katana, this is a ESS based DAC product, but in order for them to publish a driver, they had to bolt on a Microcontrolleer to control the dac. The microcontroller code is protected, however the control of the microcontroller is open source. But it will do you no good trying that driver on other ESS dacs. You have to be careful moving SD card between quad core and single core RPi's. Although initially the SD card are the same, once you start loading extensions the SD cards can't be swapped between single and quad core RPI's. So it may or may not work depending on what extensions are loaded! Start with a fresh image (pCP4.0.0-b7) and stick a good wpa_supplicant.conf on the boot partition and that should be it. regards Greg Greg Erskine's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7403 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109286 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
I have now version 4.0.0-b7 running on all my piCorePlayers, so I decided to be brave and upgraded my LMS-pCP which is installed on a RPi3, previously on version 3.5.0. Upgrade went smoothly, although I had to manually adjust some settings afterwards, but no big deal. However, my USB HDD where all my music is, would not mount after upgrade, and after some fiddling around, I found out that the module util-linux.tcz was not installed after the upgrade. Fixing this made the USB HDD mount and everything work again. I am listening to music of my LMS server as I write this. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
I took the opportunity to install 4.0 B6 real-time kernel on a new, faster, SD-card. So far, works perfectly with RPi 3+ and Digione and running LMS too (despite the dire warnings). As a bonus, it now seems to synch properly with my Squeezebox Radio (3.5.0 would drop-out every 10-15 secs). Great work guys and a slick website too. fsger's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15977 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109286 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Several are using zeroW's just fine (Me included) An open network. That is flat crazy.but whatever. Open network is an option on the web page, but with a zeroW, you need to manually configure this, as you don't have a network. Create a wpa_supplicant.conf on the boot partition. Per this web page. https://www.picoreplayer.org/how_to_setup_wifi_on_pcp_without_ethernet.shtml The contents of your file should look like this # Maintained by user ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant ctrl_interface_group=staff # Two Character Country Code country="GB" update_config=1 network={ ssid="yourssid" key_mgmt=NONE } piCorePlayer a small player for the Raspberry Pi in RAM. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
Version 4.00 b6 doesn't want to connect wifi on a Pi ZeroW. I've followed the wpa_supplicant.conf instructions and tested them from the same SD card in a Pi3b and wireless connects. Same card won't initiate wifi on the zeroW. I've also tried adding the SSID, etc directly to the pizero but to no avail. The drivers don't get loaded in either case. I have an open network with no password and use the GB country code. Everything is fine with version 3.5 and it failed initially after an in situ update. Tried two Pi Zero's and two different SD cards. Results consistent. Do you think wifi can be enabled with this new version on a Pi Zero W? Grateful for any help. This is to report that thanks to a PM correspondance with Paul in the team, I finally solved the problem I reported last week. The trick that made the wifi connection work again was to use the "Update" button at the bottom of the main page on the web interface (In beta mode). By updating the base extension and rebooting the RPi, my wifi connected. Thank you very much to the team and forum members for helping solve this issue! Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
I upgraded to 4 beta 6 no issues. When i went to confirm latest version and what version i actually had (audio, realtime), i upgraded ontop. While it was upgrading i refresh the page by mistake trying to look at the verbose information.. It upgraded ok but wiped my config out. Not a huge deal, not sure if i missed a warning or not. I was rushing a bit as i was excited and still on 3.20. Definitely noticeably faster. kbeast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4761 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109286 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

I took your advice and set up a fixed address for Raspberry Pi pCP using MAC address (with my router that is under IPv4 autoconfig) using the MAC address that my router reports for the Raspberry Pi cPC, and have set pCP STATIC IP to DHCP. WIFI is turned on. For good measure I have also set up STATIC IP (eth0) to my selected IP address as well, even though it is probably superfluous. For extra good measure I have also set the WIFI (wlan)) to my prefered IP address; DHCP also checked there. WIFI is turned on and SSID, password etc., country all filled in and saved. It links to WIFI ok, but connects to my router on a random IP address. I have of course also tried the LAN connection with WIFI turned off but all other settings as stated above. I have no reason to think that the router is not setting the static IP using MAC as I have tested with other devices, and it locks them in to the nominated IP. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
I have a strange behaviour. After successfully upgrading from 3.5 to 4.0.0-b4 w/o removing the SD card, I thought that it might be handy to save my current config to USB. Just in case that I "can go back" if there are any technical problems in the future. (It was at least my understanding that I could run a kind of "restore of config" when I do I clean install.) Today I know, that this is causing a failure in the next boot process. Thereof, I did a couple of fresh installs, as I obviously caused this problem for multiple times. In the meantime, I am on -b6. Today I deleted the config file on USB, when the system was not able to boot. Result: Boot process went smoothly. Is this a bug? Is this a handling issue? Is it not forseen to run a reboot on the same system after saving the config to USB? Furthermore, it shows the correct wifi MAC address. I then unplug the wired internet and reboot the device. Upon reboot, the USB wifi adapter starts blinking showly (approx 1 Hz), but it gets no connection. This is exactly the same behaviour as the now almost hundred times I have done this exercise. I have now plugged wired internet cable in again, and it immediately gets an IP number. In wifi diagnostics it now says under dmesg: [3.024688] usb 1-1.2: New USB device found, idVendor=0bda, idProduct=8179 [3.024709] usb 1-1.2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 [3.024720] usb 1-1.2: Product: 802.11n NIC [3.024729] usb 1-1.2: Manufacturer: Realtek [5.870078] zram: Added device: zram0 . I have not uploaded the wifi diagnostics to pastebin with paste name: pCP-B+-775bd5-wifi Finally, I will repeat that I am using an old RPi 1B+ with a Hifiberry DAC+ card and the problematic USB wifi adapter, and that this configuration has worked for the last few years with different versions of pCP without any problems, the latest tested version being 3.5.0. Hope this helps identify the problem, and thanks again for your help. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
hi Ronnie, pCP reads wpa_supplicant.conf from the boot area and converts it into a real wpa_supplicant.conf pCP only gets your SSID, password, encryption, country? values and makes a new pCP compatible wpa_supplicant.conf. Check wifi diagnostics and you will see your new wpa_supplicant.conf If you really want to maintain your own, then you must include: Code: # Maintained by user This will force pCP to use your wpa_supplicant.conf as is. The [Wifi settings] page will also ignore your it. You must then manually maintain the file with your favourite editor, vi by default. We did it this way so pCP will correct most errors and get users up and going with minimal effort. But, if the user knows about wpa_supplicant then they can make the file as complex as they like and pCP will use it. If it contains errors it is then the users problem. regards Greg Greg Erskine's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7403 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109286 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
I have done a couple of fresh installs of the new Beta by creating a wpa_supplicant.conf file on the boot partition of the card. The text I used is slightly different to the one suggested by the pCP team https://www.picoreplayer.org/how_to_setup_wifi_on_pcp_without_ethernet.shtml and I have just utilised the built in rpi 3B Wi-Fi. Code: country=GB ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev update_config=1 network={ ssid="YOUR SSID" psk="YOUR PASSWORD" } I'm just offering this post for information, please ignore it if it is considered as "noise":p Ronnie Man in a van's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43627 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109286 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

hi Jens Erik Jensen, Just confirming, the special character, exclamation point (!), does indeed work in a wifi password in pCP4.0.0-b6 [Wifi settings] web page. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
hi Jens Erik Jensen, We want things to work as well as you do. The idea of this beta release was to find issues that we didn't foresee. pCP4.0.0 has lots of changes, much more than usual, and there is only so much we can test in our environments. I will put my money on #4. An exclamation point (!) is indeed a special character. I am surprised it ever worked!! The pCP4.0.0 [ Wifi settings ] web page should handle special characters. Can you paste your wifi diagnostics to pastebin? They expire after 24 hours. Make sure you are using at least pCP4.0.0-b6. regards Greg Greg Erskine's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7403 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109286 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
Hi Paul and Greg, Thank you for being so helpful and not giving up on this issue. As for Greg's troubleshooting link and the most frequent reasons for wifi not working: 1.Wrong password. 2.Wrong SSID. 3.piCorePlayer does not support hidden SSID. 4.piCorePlayer does not support special characters in SSID or password. 5.Wifi adapter does not support wifi channel selected on wifi router. 6.USB wifi adapter and buit-in wifi adapter both trying to run at the same time. 7.Some audio cards interfere with Raspberry Pi built-in wifi adapters. 8.Wifi drivers are gradually changing from wext to nl80211 standard. 9.Occasionally, kernel upgrades break USB wifi drivers. Unfortunately, we can not test all USB wifi drivers prior to each piCorePlayer release. Please report any issue. I have of course checked 1+2+3 many times before reporting. Regarding 4, I do have an exclamation point (!) in my password, but I have had that for years without any issue, so I have not considered it a special character 5 can be ruled out as all previous versions of piCorePlayer work with that exact configuration 6 is also not an issue as it is an old RPi 1B+ without built-in wifi 7 the audio card is a Hifiberry DAC+ which has also been part of the configuration for years, so I find this very unlikely so, I think we are back at 8 or 9 as plausible reasons. Paul has sent me a PM, and I will check up on his questions tonight when I'm home and report back to him. I could easily go back to a previous image as I do not immediately need any of the new features in 4.0.0, but I guess my contribution to the development is to offer my rtrequipment for testing and reporting back issues that might affect others. The USB wifi adapter is a relatively cheap one using a Realtek chipset, and I have the impression that these adapters have sold in huge numbers, so I think the issue is relevant not to invest in troubleshooting. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
David, If you would just setup your router to always pass the same address based on MAC address, your problems would be 100% solved. DHCP is way more reliable, and if something ever changes in your setup..change your router, and reboot your devices, and they all get the new setup. Static is completely different in 3.5.0, so that will not hold in upgrades. We have not tested static between 4.0.0 and future upgrades. Paul PS. newconfig.cfg no longer works. The method to setup wifi is now outlined https://www.picoreplayer.org/how_to_setup_wifi_on_pcp_without_ethernet.shtml piCorePlayer a small player for the Raspberry Pi in RAM.
