Do you mean that you tried LXDE with your earlier mentioned Buster Lite
or did you actually try with DietPi?

This above has

Chromium Browser
LMS
Squeezelite
Jivelite

No package manager

all on a 4gb sd card

Code:

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ df -h

  tmpfs 391M 20K 391M 1% /run/user/1000
  pi@raspberrypi:~ $

For what it's worth, I think it much better to just use the

'Raspberry Pi OS (32-bit) with desktop
Image with desktop based on Debian Buster'

which has few very useful bits, like VNC server for a start

The extra overhead is just over 4gb (so an easy fit on a 8gb card)

Edit:
One can use the Material Skin Plugin instead of Jivelite:)

I have been try to get this to work on the LXDE gui, without success.

I switched to the raspberrp utils and that is much better, autologin,
jivelite start at power up, much better :)

have a look at this

https://raspberrytips.com/upgrade-raspbian-lite-to-desktop/

If you want a good Desktop, then this is the one I use

https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspios_armhf_latest

There is a raspberry image maker for windows

https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/

It might be a bit "heavier" than Dietpi, but it's uptodate and does not
need a lot of stuff to be added in.

I'm sorry but I can't spend more time on this now.

I have to hack about and do searches as I have never used Dietpi, at
all. It's far to "clever" for me.

If you have a spare card, why not try Buster-Lite and add LXDE to that,
(or do you specically need DietPI ?).

I mostly run the Buster desktop without the recommended software

Wonder if it could be that I'm logging in as "root" with my autostart of
the LXDE desktop that's the problem? My main "jivelite" folder ended up
under /root/ .., not sure if that's correct, don't think it's the real
root? Maybe I should login as "DietPi" and try the install again?

LoL :-D. Ok fair enough but I'm sure you know more about these things
than me.

May I ask you this, 1; did you use _exactly_ the same commands from your
earliest Joggler post when installing Jivelite on your Raspian Rpi4?

2; and then from your last bit described :
--
rebooted the joggler and connected via ssh from my windows desktop

pasted

Code:

sudo /home/joggler/jivelite/bin/jivelite-"

Is it supposed to be a file or a folder called "jivelite" in the folder
*/bin/jivleite/ that is supposed to start up Jivelite or what is that
last bit describing? I suppose you don't have a folder named "joggler"
on yor Rpi? I also suppose you've the other JIvelite related folders
under /home/joggler/jivelite/ ? (like "share", "src", "lib-src" e.t.c,
e.t.c). Is that correct? Sorry if it's a dumb question. For me coming
from >25 years using with windows it's hard seeing the logic of Linux
file and folders directorys that's for sure.

Hi, been reading this threads and a lots of other ones hoping to find an
answer of how to install Jivelite an a Rpi3B+ with DietPi. Have also
installed LXDE desktop along with Squeezelite which was no problem. New
to the wonderful world of Linux. For trying to install Jivelite I
followed "man in a van" install steps mentioned further up but I think
something is wrong. Or I've no idea of how to start Jivelite after those
steps since I can't get it to run. Anyone who could help/guide me?

(FYI:know about PcP, max2play and the likes but need a working browser
for my project so that's why choosing DietPi. Also I've earlier managed
to install and run Squeezeplayer on an Ubuntu 16.04 VM so therefore
after failing with Jivelite on my DietPi then tried with Squeezeplayer
instead. But I could neither get it to run. I'm surely missing one or
two things, one of them could be a brain maybe ... :-/).

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Jivelite for Buster

2019-08-08 Thread Paul Webster

Here is what I have just done ...

sudo vi /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE-pi/autostart

add
@/home/pi/jivelite/bin/jivelite

to the end of the pre-existing file ...
logout / login ... (perhaps reboot).

So now on boot I have a Jivelite automatically starting up in a window
on the desktop ... and in my case ... connecting to LMS on a different
system.
This might not be great for you since LMS will not yet be running when
JiveLite starts up ... but my guess is that you could get it to work by
having it launch a script instead and put a delay (or a real test for
the LMS ports being responsive) before the script launches Jivelite.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Jivelite for Buster

2019-08-08 Thread Man in a van

Hi Paul

I build it on the pi, using the instructions I have previously used for
the Joggler

https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?110040-Jivelite-on-a-Joggler&p=931584&viewfull=1#post931584

I don't know if that is frame buffer or X11.

Most likely fb, but in truth I don't really know the difference. I guess
that fb works when I run the start instruction from another computer and
it loads the full screen version of Jivelite and x11 runs Jivelite as a
window within the desktop.

I seem to remember that ralphy posted a link for a squeezeplay with x11
which I did play with once.

Here is the link

https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?107837-Install-Squeezeplay-on-RPi3-with-full-OS-not-just-picore-or-max2play&p=891854&viewfull=1#post891854

please don't wast too much time on this.

The addition of the ampersand to the start up script means I can remove
the lx terminal any way. One extra click is not worth using up you
valuable time

Thanks a lot

ronnie

I don't usually have X-Windows on RPi systems ... but now I have one so
I thought I would try to reproduce the issue ... but ... where did you
get your Jivelite from?
I can see various Squeezeplay builds from Ralphy at
https://sourceforge.net/projects/lmsclients/files/squeezeplay/linux/ but
the ARMHF ones appear to be Frame Buffer (fb) not X11.

No luck with that Paul, but thanks anyway.

I'll just use the "&" and keep looking.

An “exit” (without quotes) at the end of the script may well close the
terminal window.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Jivelite for Buster

2019-08-07 Thread Man in a van

It's all a bit weird really.

Yesterday, if I closed the lxterminal window, both windows closed.

I have just done that and the Jivelite window remains open and running
(that will be the ampersand addition, I guess)

So that's a step forward.:)

@Jeff07979

Ican start it from

> /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE-pi/autostart

but that again gives me two windows, one lxterminal, one Jivelite as per
my screen-shot.

I want to start Jivelite in the Desktop when I want to use it, without
the lxterminal also opening.

If it would autostart into the Desktop without the lxterminal showing,
that also would be ideal.

@paul-
I'm running the pi directly connected to a monitor, keyboard and mouse.

I removed the ampersand from the command line and added your suggestion

Code:

exportDISPLAY=:0
  /home/pi/jivelite/bin/jivelite

That gave me this screen. No Taskbar at the top and a white panel/bar on
the left hand side

I then replaced the ampersand

Code:

exportDISPLAY=:0
  /home/pi/jivelite/bin/jivelite &

and got the same screen on reboot.

If your script is not running from a TTY, then you should just be able
to set the Display variable at the beginning of you script.

export DISPLAY=:0

Do you want jivelite to be the only app or do you want to use the other
desktop app with JL running also ?

What desktop manager does Buster Desktop use ?
There is a way to auto start app with some desktop managers

Hi Paul, i had seen that suggested somewhere online, but hadn't tried
it; sadly it made no difference.

I can start with a crontab command link and with a link from autostart.

I have tried using a .service file and systemd, but that does not work.

I have a feeling that Jivelite is made to start as a Desktop itself, and
there is some magic dust to be added to make it start as a seperate
program.

I'm not technical enough to describe it in any better manner :(.

If i run the start command from another computer it starts into a full
desktop, but I want to just have a small window open in the current
Desktop.

I was able to do it before in "Stretch" with Squeezeplay, but I thought
to first try with Jivelite.

Cheers

ronnie.

I see fipo had a wesite make-over a few weeks ago :)
