[SlimDevices: Unix] Squeezecenter upgrade woes
To the Slimdevices guys, I am now affected by two bugs (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=7195 and http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=7580). In and of themselves, these bugs won't impact the majority of users, and probably aren't even down to programming errors in squeezecenter/slimserver itself. Nevertheless, it's the kind of thing that should never have happened and, from looking at previous forum posts, I believe the cause of my woes is the same for many users. I am a developer, and enjoy playing around with new software, but only in my office, and not my living room (or bedroom), where I was quite happy running Slimserver 6.5.4 on Ubuntu 6.04 LTS amd64 until recently. I'm forced to upgrade because Pandora no longer works (firmware upgrade/downgrade cycle), and I cannot upgrade to Squeezecenter because of bug #7195. Installing a temporary (beta) solution until Ubuntu gets released at the end of April was my 2am fallback, and now even that alludes me. Forced upgrades leave a bitter taste in anyones mouth, and looking at some old forum posts, this seems to be a recurring issue. For me, I guess the only current solution is to upgrade to an intermediate OS, and again when I can download something that will last me a while. I can and will help you fix these to the extent that my wife/kid/otherwise allows me (I love my Squeezeboxes!). But my music is even more sacred and I don't think it's unreasonable to want things to remain stable and just work. This means retaining a level of backwards compatibly and a cut-over period in which users may evaluate new upgrades (if they are to be forced at all) - the kind of things that the customers of our industry should learn to expect. Can this be made better? -- dazwin dazwin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15410 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45133 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/unix

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] SlimServer and .ac3 files
Hello everybody, I have now found time to update my Slimserver to Squeezecenter. After the update, all conversions of the standard files like APE, MPC, AAC work fine again. Conversion of ac3 does not work yet, however. This is the output when I use mplayer with the "-v" option to play the file as suggested. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Squeezecenter configuration file
FHS compatibility. The prefs file isn't really a static configuration file edited by the user and read by the application. It is more accurately a file containing variable state data written out by the application. That type of data belongs in /var/lib. The RPM and deb provide a symlink in /etc/squeezecenter to make it easy to find for people used to the old behavior. -- Fletch Fletch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=529 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45135 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/unix

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Mutlicore CPUs for Ubuntu & SqueezeCenter Server
I built my own home NAS (3TB with hardware RAID controller) and built it on a Dell Server platform with a quad core Zeon. There is another free slot for another processor which I may fill one of these days. OS is 64-Bit Ubuntu server and it re-scans my music collection like a bullet :) I run my Perforce SCM server on this system and manage my other media, so it's was worthwhile building my own. All the commercial home NAS devices on the market are underpowered crap (I work for the company that invented NAS). This NAS achieves RAID 5 writes of 90MB/s, even from Vista. The best commercial home NAS on the market, the Thecus, gets about 20MB/s on a good day! Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Squeezecenter upgrade woes
To prevent the constant up- and downgrade when switching between Squeezenetwork and Slimserver 6.5.4 you can replace the Firmware directory with the Firmware dir from 7.0 As an alternative (assuming you have either SB2 or SB3s) you can download the file squeezebox2_86.bin from http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/7.0/, save it in the Firmware directory of your SS 6.5.4 installation and change the file squeezebox2.version in the same dir to look like this: Code: # Squeezebox2 firmware # fromto # from1..from2 to 1..86 86 # future versions may be downgraded to this one * 86 -s. -- slimpy slimpy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1524 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45133 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/unix
