[uportal-dev] Inactive committers

2014-11-07 Thread Andrew Petro
uPortal committers,

These committers are members of the uportal-developers GitHub team (
https://github.com/orgs/Jasig/teams/uportal-developers ) but have zero
commits in Jasig/uPortal/master in the last year (
https://github.com/Jasig/uPortal/graphs/contributors?from=2013-11-07&to=2014-11-07&type=c
).

 * Are you active in other GitHub projects that complectedly grant their
committership through the uportal-developers Team rather than via a
portlet-specific Team (if so, sorry for the bother!)?
 * Are you active in merging Pull Requests rather than by writing new code
(if so, sorry for the bother, the naive GitHub reporting doesn't credit
merge commits.)
 * Is there something active developers can do to help you to again become
active in contributing code to uPortal?
 * Are you on hiatus but expect to return to activity?
 * Or, sadly, is it time to retire your uportal-developers Team membership,
no doubt with leave to joyously be re-welcomed in a happily more active
future?

2014-11-07 Thread Cris J Holdorph
You could remove my committer-ship if you want, and that makes the list
somehow cleaner for you. I have not committed anything recently.
However, I do believe I am still an active member of the community.

Tim,

Done.

Again, not my preferred resolution to committer inactivity. Please do
discover that you desperately want to be actively contributing code to
uPortal in the future, and that there's something other uPortal committers
can be doing to help make that happen. :)

You can remove mine as well, as much as I'd like to contribute code the
realities of the world are that list participation is about as much as I
can swing right now.

Re: [uportal-dev] Inactive committers

2014-11-07 Thread Andrew Petro
Eric,

Done.

With tremendous regret that you're not currently in a position to
contribute code.

And with tremendous hope that that will change in the future.

And with recognition that in the brave new world of distributed source
control and Pull Requests, push access to uPortal git repos isn't actually
required to contribute code. :)

Kind regards,

Andrew

Re:[uportal-dev] Inactive committers

2014-11-07 Thread Andrew Petro
uPortalers,

I got some private feedback that this thread could be taken as offensive,
as pushing participants out.

It wasn't my intent to offend. Please read this thread as technical and
administrative.

That Team grants push to forty (!!!) repos. It's a lot of write access.
I'm delighted for collaborators who need that access and who are using it
to make progress happen to have it, of course. However, I think it's an
essential administrative practice to, from time to time, clean up the
GitHub teams of accounts that don't anticipate needing that level of access.

I laid out in my post several options other than dropping Team membership.
Please, please do avail yourself of those options if they're the right
answer for your situation.

I'd emphasize also that my email does not demand any action. I'm not in a
position to demand action, nor am I interested in that approach : I can
only call reality as I see it and suggest some moves to make. The reality
is there are a handful of GitHub accounts that have a lot of write access
but don't seem to be using it for its obvious purpose, and so one of those
paths forward is probably in order for each.

I'd emphasize further that membership in that write-access-granting-Team is
necessary only for a specific kind of most-active collaboration on the
uPortal codebase. There are a lot of ways of participating in the uPortal
project; participating in ways that don't require that Team membership
isn't less valuable as such.

Please do let me know what I can do to help more participants to be active
code contributors; I'd like to do it.

Kind regards,

Andrew

Re:[uportal-dev] Inactive committers

2014-11-07 Thread dmccallum
I am very unlikely to push to master, but I do need to push to the various
ssp-* branches in the uPortal repo. But I doubt I need push to any of these
~40 other repos except possibly person-directory. So if my group assignments
just need to be reorganized to reflect my focus on uP and SSP, that's fine.

Re: [uportal-dev] Inactive committers

2014-11-07 Thread Andrew Petro
Hi Dan,

Pushing to the ssp-* Jasig/uPortal branches sounds like an activity right at
the heart of what the uportal-developers team is intended to grant.

I won’t take on nuancing differential access to those 40 repos at this
juncture. :)

Thanks for clarifying.

And hey, one of these days we should definitely figure out whether and what of
the sso-* branch improvements ought to be merged over onto master. :)

2014-11-09 Thread Steve Swinsburg
Hey

You can pull mine from master and I'll do PRs as required, but I do need
access to the Sakai and basic lti portlet repos so might need to be left
in, though IMO commit perms should probably be separate to uPortal core?

Cheers

Re: [uportal-dev] Inactive committers

2014-11-10 Thread Andrew Petro
Steve,

The Portlet Developers team grants push to, among others, the Sakai
Connector and Basic LTI Connector portlets, so I added you to that Team and
dropped you from the uPortal Developers Team to better reflect your current
Git push patterns.

I emphasize that if you'd find in the future that you're collaborating upon
uPortal itself in a way that would benefit from uPortal Developers team
membership in GitHub, well, that would be a wonderful thing. :)

Kind regards,

Andrew
