Re: Release 9.0.0 RC-1

2018-03-14 Thread Dave Kilroy via use-livecode
Well done all of you at LiveCode!

RC-1 looks great and a 'great leap forward' from 8 (which was itself a great
leap forward etc...)

I don't have enough time to have a good play with it at the moment but am
looking forward to doing so :)

BTW, in the last week using 9.0.0-dp11 I've built and submitted the same app
twice for iTunesConnect, and apart from the usual annoying warning messages,
the app sailed though the Apple Review process (and uploaded .apks to Google
Play as well). In short, dp11 was stable for me and just fine for deploying
as well as development.

Kind regards

Dave

Re: post to cgi, JSON in Headers?

2018-02-01 Thread Dave Kilroy via use-livecode
Klaus I wonder if he wants you to let the server know what kind of data
you'll be sending up, it's not uncommon to set the headers this way when
posting data to an API:

put "Content-Type: application/json" into tHeaders
set httpHeaders to tHeaders

Good luck!

Re: Anyone else got two-monitor issues with LC9 on Mac?

2018-01-15 Thread Dave Kilroy via use-livecode
Hi all - this is how I arrange my screens (also pretty much how they are
physically)

I'm running a 2014 15" mbp on High Sierra and my two external monitors are
the special LG 5k ones (with thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapters). No dead spots as
regards mouse movements or clicks

The only thing I find I need to do as regards LC is if I have the big
monitors attached and have previously used LC with only the mbp screen, I
need to right-click the LC icon on the dock, choose options and set the desk
space to 'display 1' before setting it to 'display 3' (where I usually place
my LC). I also need to give the script editor a bit of TLC if the previous
time I opened it was on the mbp screen

set the topleft of stack "revNewScriptEditor 1" to 200,200
set the loc of stack "revNewScriptEditor 1" to the screenloc

These commands in the message box usually reveal the script editor (in the
mbp screen) which I just then drag over, the next time I open LC the script
editor knows where to be and everything is ok. Err occasionally even message
box stuff won't reveal the script editor, in which case I save the app I'm
working on anyway, close and restart LC and it's sorted itself out.

PS: I don't have the tops of the monitors aligned so that mouse movements
between my mbp screen and the big screens doesn't involve a vertical 'jump'
in screen space

Re: Voice Comparison in LiveCode?

Hi Peter

Yep what you are trying to do is indeed not easy if you want it to work on your
friend’s Amazon tablet

Are you not tempted to use ‘standard’ voice-to-text on Android or iOS as per
your method b and then buying your friend a non-crippled droid tablet?

If the answer is “no i want to stretch the envelope” then I like Phil’s

Re: The coming of SVG

2017-11-05 Thread Dave Kilroy via use-livecode
Hmm tricky this naming business isn’t it!

My take on this is that it would be better to have a modifier for an existing
control name rather than baptise a new control name to join what we already
have (especially as it sounds like what Mark has done to to create a
‘superImage’ / ‘superGraphic’ control (I know there is more to it than that,
but for me this is what stands out as new)

In much the same way that ‘trueWord’ joined ‘word’ we could have ‘uniImage’ or
‘trueImage’ (or ‘uniGraphic’ or ‘trueGraphic’) - this will keep the number of
control names down as a low as possible and won’t break anything in old code

Kind regards

Dave

Re: Android Filing System using LC9

2017-10-30 Thread Dave Kilroy via use-livecode
Hi Peter

I’ve just done a new test build for my Galaxy S7Android (running Android 7)
using LC 9.0.0 (dp10) and I’m able to transfer files from ‘engine’ to
‘documents’ and to write to ‘documents’.

I’ve never had to manually add “Android” and have found specialFolderPath() to
be solid for my on Android - but there again I’m not trying to access data the
app stores on the device by any method other than using the app itself...

This is what I’m currently using to set up local files (it’s a bit sloppy and
could do with updating - especially the test for whether or not to copy all the
files over) - but it works:

on setupLocalFiles
   if isMobile() then
  put the defaultfolder into tDefault
  put specialFolderPath("engine") & "/ehrdata/" into tFolder
  set the defaultfolder to tFolder
  put the files into tFiles
repeat with i = 1 to the number of lines in tFiles
if char 1 of line i of tFiles = "." then delete line i of tFiles
  end repeat
  set the defaultfolder to tDefault

  put specialFolderPath("engine") & "/ehrdata/" into tSourceFolder
  put specialFolderPath("documents") & "/ehrdata/" into tTargetFolder
if there is not a folder tTargetFolder then create folder tTargetFolder
put (the ehr["templateId"] of the current stack) &
"_exampledatareduced.json" into tCheckFile
replace space with "_" in tCheckFile
  put files(tSourceFolder) into tFiles

if there is not a file (tTargetFolder & tCheckFile) then
repeat for each line tFile in tFiles
if char 1 of tFile = "." then next repeat
put tSourceFolder & tFile into tSourceFile
put tTargetFolder & tFile into tTargetFile
put URL("binfile:" & tSourceFile) into URL("binfile:" & tTargetFile)
 end repeat
  end if
   end if
end setupLocalFiles

And this is and example of how I write “on the fly” to ‘documents - again it’s
a bit convoluted (it uses encryption) as it’s specific to my needs - but it
works:

on savePrefs
put the uPrefs of stack "Diadem" into tPrefs
   put doEncryptAnd64(tPrefs) into t64

if word 1 of t64 <> "Bad" then
if isMobile() then put "documents" into tSpecialFolder
  else put "resources" into tSpecialFolder
  put specialFolderPath(tSpecialFolder) & "/prefs/"into tPath
if there is not a folder tPath then create folder tPath
put tPath & "prefs.txt" into tFile
  put t64 into URL("binfile:" & tFile)
   else
  answer "Error:" && t64
  exit to top
   end if
end savePrefs

Kind regards

Dave

Re: Livecode on iPod

I’ve used www.getudid.io in the past and sometimes
received non-functioning UDIDs - and bad UDIDs are a pain to deal with…

Of course maybe the website works now - however I recommend that people connect
their iOS devices to a machine running the latest version of iTunes and use
that to get their UDIDs - and in my experience iTunes provides 100% reliable
UDIDs

Re: Submitting to the #%^%#? App Store

Ah yes - one of the biggest GOTCHA’s there is when working on Apple
certification…

I’ve found the best approach is to keep my dev machine scrupulously clean as
regards old certificates, and a session with Keychain Access pays dividends.

The same thing goes as regards old provisioning profiles - you should find all
provisioning profiles on your mac stored at
'/Users/ Okay. - I got it submitted :)

Re: How do we access the clipboard on mobile devices?

2017-06-26 Thread Dave Kilroy via use-livecode
OK good, the visible bits of a native field (border, background colour etc)
could all be provided by background graphics so when you switch fields no
visible change can be seen - you might even be able to use the inputTextChanged
message instead of a button which the user has to press

BTW you’ll have to delete the native field instead of just hiding it as it’ll
be in the top layer and could interfere with user interactions…

Re: How do we access the clipboard on mobile devices?

Jonathan if you use a native field you can access it’s contents (which a user
could have pasted into it) via something like the inputEndEditing message, and
from there hide/delete the native field, reveal a LiveCode field, place the
relevant data into it etc etc - would this help your situation?

2017-05-03 Thread Dave Kilroy via use-livecode
tldr - don’t use Xcode 8.3 yet, you can still build for iOS 10.3

Bill the Release Notes are a good place to check such issues. The following is
an extract for release notes for LiveCode 8.1.4(rc1)

iOS

iOS deployment is possible when running LiveCode IDE on a Mac, and provided
Xcode is installed and has been set in LiveCode Preferences (in the Mobile
Support pane).

LiveCode 8.1.4-rc-1 Release Notes 4/4/17

Currently, the supported versions of Xcode are:

Xcode 4.6 on MacOS X 10.7
Xcode 5.1 on MacOS X 10.8
Xcode 6.2 on MacOS X 10.9
Xcode 6.2 and 7.2 on Mac OS X 10.10 Xcode 8.2 on MacOS X 10.11

Xcode 8.2 on MacOS 10.12

It is also possible to set other versions of Xcode, to allow testing on a wider
range of iOS simulators. For instance, on OS X 10.10 (Yosemite), you can add
Xcode 5.1 in the Mobile Support preferences, to let you test your stack on the
iOS Simulator 7.1.

We currently support deployment for the following versions of iOS:

6.1 [simulator] 7.1 [simulator] 8.2 [simulator] 9.2

Xcode 8.2 on MacOS X 10.11
Xcode 8.2 on MacOS 10.12
It is also possible to set other versions of Xcode, to allow testing on a wider
range of iOS simulators. For instance, on OS X 10.10 (Yosemite), you can add
Xcode 5.1 in the Mobile Support preferences, to let you test your stack on the
iOS Simulator 7.1.

We currently support deployment for the following versions of iOS:

6.1 [simulator]
7.1 [simulator]
8.2 [simulator]
9.2
10.2

Re: Remote debugger

2017-03-04 Thread Dave Kilroy via use-livecode
Thanks Jacque - but I’m not convinced that’s it - I set that (for android) plus
Internet, Remote Debugger - and have tried various combinations of including
and not including tsNet - and have rebooted by mac and router … but I don’t
think I tried making wifi required for iOS, will try that in the morning

One thing I am suspicious of however is gRevDevelopment - when I look at my
menu sections in the IDE I can see it’s set, but when I check in the message
box it show false - if I set it to true (via the message box or in code) then I
can get the message box to report it as true, and it shows in the menus as true
- but if I then save and quit and relaunch LiveCode it again shows true in the
menus but reports as false via the message box! So I guess it’s likely that
each time I build for iOS/Android its going out with gRevDevelopment set to
false

And what is extra weird is that this behaviour of the gRevDevelopment not
having much/any relationship to the settings in the IDE’s menus is the same in
earlier version of LC 8, 7 and even 6

I obviously don’t understand what gRevDevelopment does!

RE: Android Keyboard Activation Issue

2017-01-13 Thread Dave Kilroy via use-livecode
Hmm - Dan both Andrew and I appear to create native inputs on opening the
card so that when the user touches the native control it's ready to go. You
appear to create the native control at the same time the user touches the
underneath field? (or maybe you have a round-rect graphic or similar that
the user clicks on?).

Do you get the same need for a double-touch if a user comes back to a native
control a second time (i.e. when it has already been created)? Perhaps
experiment with creating the native control first and then use it once it's
been fully instantiated?

BTW my wording earlier when I was talking about having an issue on Android
with "the keyboard sliding out" was sloppy - I was trying to say the issue
was around getting the keyboard to slide out of the way i.e. at the end of
the editing process...

Good luck!

Dave

PS: do you have any LiveCode fields on the card with traversalOn set to true
that may be 'holding on' to focus and thus requiring the double-touch?

Re: Android Keyboard Activation Issue

2017-01-12 Thread Dave Kilroy via use-livecode
Hi Dan - is your native control multi-line? If so the dictionary says
mobileControlDo multi-line text input specific actions are for iOS only.

I use a 'send' command to create native controls in the openCard handler in
500ms which works in iOS and Android. When I have more than on native input
on a card I make use of: inputFocus, mobileControlTarget, inputBeginEditing
etc.

Also I've had a problem with getting the keyboard to slide out on Android
without an extra tap so I use the following in the keyboardDeactivated
message

 if isAndroid() then
  focus on fld "fldInput1"
  focus on nothing
 end if

So it just may be that if you check exactly where the focus is before the
keyboard appears that you can cut out your extra tap...

Re: SSL?

2016-12-26 Thread Dave Kilroy
Basically, on a shared account such as on-rev offer you can’t install a SSL
certificate without their help

I think LiveCode used to offer a service where they would help install a SSL
certificate you had purchased elsewhere - but it may be they no longer do this
as they now sell SSL certificates for on-rev at £101.12 - if you log in to your
LiveCode account, click on ‘Hosting’ and then scroll down you should see it
listed...

Also, free SSL certificates have been available for a while now from an
organisation called LetsEncrypt - some providers (such as hostm.com
) will set up of these free SSL certificates as a client
wants for no charge

Re: AW: Installer software

2016-12-10 Thread Dave Kilroy
Well when I was a Visual Studio guy if you wanted any sort of a decent
installer you had to use 3rd party software

Making good Windows installers can be a big thing - and it used to be the
market leader product for this (this is about 8 years ago now) was
InstallShield and that was PRICEY! Like a couple of thousand pounds

There were and are of course many open source solutions such as Inno Setup
... but like I said earlier my particular favourite was Setup Builder...

Also, the typical scenario I came across was the devs would make something
shiny and then expect the guys with the relevant experience to knock up the
installer over the weekend - sometimes this was possible but often it
wouldn't be depending on what functionality was needed

So no, I don't expect LiveCode to include an installer and would prefer
Edinburgh spend time on developing other stuff instead

Kind regards

Dave

Re: Installer software

2016-12-09 Thread Dave Kilroy
This may well be over-kill for your need for a Windows installer - but in the
past I used SetupBuilder (http://www.lindersoft.com) a lot and found it
excellent even for complex installation scenarios

However starting at $169 it's not particularly cheap and there is a learning
curve - but it does work!

Re: compiler not catching bad exit within routine

2016-12-07 Thread Dave Kilroy
Ah right I get it now

Have you tried checking your script for invisible characters? Try copying
the entire script to something like BBedit, selecting and copying it afresh
there, deleting everything in the LiveCode script, saving it to ensure it's
clean, pasting in the (hopefully cleaned) script from Bbedit and finally
saving...

Re: savingStandalone message

2016-11-17 Thread Dave Kilroy
Hi all

Ali I would find it really useful if we could set a build number for iOS builds
inside the plist file where I’m using the 'external test’ functionality in
TestFlight

I normally use my own way of setting and recording build numbers - and I’m
happy to carry on doing do. But where there’s a problem is that there is
currently no way to indicate to iTunesConnect what an app’s build number is as
a separate value to the app’s version number (see
http://quality.livecode.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14163
) - this means we can’t
upload incremented binaries of the same version number to iTunesConnect for
rapid deployment via TestFlight, and must instead upload an incremented version
and then wait around three days for it to exit ‘Beta review'

So, if you are making changes to the standalone builder and including an option
for build number could you bear TestFlight in mind?

Kind regards

Dave

Re: Scripting style: Verbs in function names

2016-11-04 Thread Dave Kilroy
Thanks all, interesting discussion

There is another aspect of function/handler naming which is their names in
relation to APIs - for example I might have a checkConnectivity() function in
an mainstack's stack or card which calls a cgi.checkConnectivity() function in
a code library called “cgi” - prepending each handler and function in the code
library with “cgi” helps me keep track of what is going on and (I think) makes
it easier to maintain and use across different mainstacks…

…just my two penneth…

2016-11-03 Thread Dave Kilroy
Yep Thierry is right - still too early to use Xcode 8.1.1

BTW if you’re going to have multiple versions of Xcode on you machine (which is
a sensible thing to do if you’re going to have multiple versions of LiveCode on
your machine) the safest way of doing this is to have each of them in their own
folder in the Applications folder rather than renaming the .app bundle to
something like “Xcode811.app”

A further thought - LC8 ‘speaks’ UniCode while LC6 doesn’t - is there anything
in your library stack name, or the path to the library, or inside the handler)

Further questions - can you check defaultstack, defaultfolder, stacksinuse just

Re: Ask dialogs in iOS10 with apps built with LC 6.7.11

2016-10-06 Thread Dave Kilroy
Thanks Peter for the lightning fast response!

OK I thought it must be general thing (and yet another reason to move to LC 8.1)

Actually (nearly) all my work is in LC 8.1.1 now - this particular app I’m
using 6.7.11 on is a legacy one for a client that I’m modernising bit by bit -
and am now recommending a ‘great leap forward’ to 8.1.1…

Kind regards

Ask dialogs in iOS10 with apps built with LC 6.7.11

2016-10-06 Thread Dave Kilroy
I’m getting what seems to be a bug but would like to check it out with you guys
first…

If I use LC 6.7.11 (and Xcode 7.3.1) to build an app that contains an ‘Ask
question’ and/or ‘Ask password’ dialog box - on iOS 9.3.5 they work fine - but
on iOS 10 the ‘Ask’ dialogs get converted to ‘Answer’ dialogs i.e. there is
nowhere for the user to write anything and there is only the title and a
‘Cancel’ and ‘OK’ button.

Can any of you confirm this? Or even better, share a workaround?

iTunesConnect & Bitcode Auto-Recompilation

2016-10-03 Thread Dave Kilroy
Hi

Has anyone enabled this with a LiveCode app yet on iTunesConnect? In the
Bitcode Auto-Recompilation section it states:

"Occasionally, we may automatically recompile apps that include bitcode to
improve hardware support or to optimize our software."

Anyone know if this could effect a LiveCode-made app and are we OK to let it
recompile our apps?

Re: reloading iOS provisioning profiles etc

2016-09-26 Thread Dave Kilroy
Hi Ben

You can’t force LC to refresh provisioning profiles - LC only uses provisioning
profiles made at the developer portal and stored on you computer. These are the
steps you should consider when adding a new device...

At the Developer Portal:

- add your new device’s UDID in the ‘Devices’ section
- in the ‘Provisioning Profile’ section edit the provisioning profile of the
app you are interested in - including your new device in the ‘Devices’ box
(this box is a scrolling field so all your devices may not be in view)
- click the ‘Generate’ button
- do not click the ‘Download’ button

On your computer (Keychain Access)

- check the ‘my Certificates’ section for any expired keys/certificates - zap
all non-current ones

On your computer (Xcode)

- open Xcode
- open ‘Preferences’
- open the ‘Accounts’ tab
- click on your Apple ID
- click on one of the listed ‘team member’ roles (there may only be one)
- click the ‘View Details’ button
- wait a few seconds for data to refresh
- in the upper ‘Signing Identities’ box ensure your certificates are up to date
- in the lower ‘Provisioning Profiles box remove any duplicate Provisioning
Profile by right-clicking them and choosing ‘Move to Trash’
- click any showing ‘Download’ buttons showing alongside Provisioning Profile
(and get rid of all duplicate Provisioning Profiles)
- tidy up all the profiles in each of your ‘team role’ entries
- if you have any remaining profiles you can’t get rid of, right-click one of
the provisioning profiles and select ‘View in Folder’ (this shows you where
profiles are stored locally and you can delete all of them and download them
afresh (close and reopen Xcode preferences to get it to refresh) - try to
ensure that you only have valid provisioning profiles on your computer - and
only one copy of each profile

On your computer (LiveCode)

- open LiveCode
- open your app
- open the ‘Standalone Application Settings’ dialog box
- open the iOS tab
- find the relevant Provisioning Profile in the ‘Profile’ drop-down (there
should only be a single profile with your app’s name in the list)
- save your app
- try building an iOS standalone

You should now have built a new version of your app that can be installed on
your new device.

BTW the reason I recommend not clicking the ‘download’ button on the Developer
Portal is that getting Xcode to do the downloading is neater and means it’s
easier to ensure you only have a single and valid Provisioning Profile for each
of your development apps on your machine for LiveCode to access

One other thing - I always add “ - development” or “ - distribution” to profile
names so that when it comes to adding the correct one from the LiveCode
drop-down I can be sure I’m adding the correct type of profile…

Kind regards

Dave

I’m particularly interested in delivering this for iOS/Android - I know I could

from LiveCode instead...

Re: tSettings["username"]

2016-09-16 Thread Dave Kilroy
Yep a v good question

I looked at Sarah Reichelt's smtp library
(https://github.com/trozware/rev_stacks
) to see how she did multiple
recipients, but how she handles multiple recipients doesn’t help with tsNet…

AND I have another question - which is: how do we send html emails? Sarah’s
library seems to have cracked this and I can see enough of the bones of how she
did it (assuming it is still in date and works on tsNet) to be able to
reconstruct it (but it does look very fiddly) - and when I have time I’ll give
it a go as it would be nice to have it in the dementia app I’m working on -
when/if I get it working I’ll post the script here…

Thanks for your help with this Charles and others

Yesterday I got the same advice from HostM about using TLS -
"smtp://domain:port” and not "scheme://host:port/path: as it is in the
dictionary

I’m so impressed with your external, it’s so fast and even fussy domains such
as nhs.net email accounts accept emails sent by it without objection :)

I have a question to ask though, is it possible to include an attachment with
the email?

Alex yes of course you’re right (although it does sound like what you needed
was a copy of Trevor’s Clarify (http://www.clarify-it.com/
<http://www.clarify-it.com/>)

I first used the ‘scribbling on images’ when I was doing a mobile prototype for
a health related project called OpenEyes (http://www.openeyes.org.uk/
<http://www.openeyes.org.uk/>) where clinicians did special ‘scribbling’ to
indicate various clinical things (I never was clear what exactly they meant…)

So doodling doesn’t have to be just moustaches and spectacles - however in my
desperation to get people to attend I’m gambling that pitching what we’ll make
at the ‘fun’ end of the spectrum will lead to more people turning up (I hope)

BTW: I was going to cannibalise my OpenEyes app to form the base learning
resource for the workshop when John Dixon told me he has already done the work
(using his own ‘Scribble’ app that was actually on the App Store for some time)

PS: did your person manage to dismantle the wheelchair?

Re: What's everyone working on this month? (September 2016)

2016-09-02 Thread Dave Kilroy
What a great list, we should do this every month :)

I’m also doing too much:

1. Developing the ‘DiADeM’ dementia diagnosis app as featured at the recent LC
conference - we’ll be going for pilot testing in Yorkshire and Buckinghamshire
on 3rd October so I still have a lot to finish off.

2. Tweaking a pretty cool RFID card reading system created by another LiveCode
developer - (RFID hardware using BLE to connect to iPods which connect to a
server). Last month I was working on the BLE and this month looks like my focus
will be sockets…

3. Putting on a LiveCode workshop here in Plymouth, UK where the topic will be
creating an iOS/Android app that allows participants to take photos of their
friends, deface them and then send them the ‘enhanced’ photos
http://www.meetup.com/The-THINQTANQ-Events-Meetups-and-More-in-Plymouth/events/226749341/

4. Updating a simple video app for iOS and Android for a local group. I really
like the people involved and the cause they are working for, have just helped
them set up a Google Play account and am trying to train them enough to make
their own apps as time goes by.

5. Looking for a developer who can take on a health-related project I don’t
have time for. If you are interested please get in touch. This project could be
a great ‘in’ to health-related work - it will involve developing for iOS and
Android, working with video recording and uploading to a server. Initially it
may well be that you would have to construct your own web service to receive
and store video recordings and to manage some sharing between users - but this
may not be necessary and instead you would have to learn how to connect to
OpenEHR from the off (I can help with this). There is a UK based pilot due to
start in February 2017 with a lot of work to be done - not even a spec document
has been created so this project could very much be ‘your baby’. The client is
based in the London area. Get in touch if you’re interested

6. Going to the next NHS Hackday 1 & 2 October in Newcastle
http://nhshackday.com/ - it would be smashing to see
some other LiveCoder’s there! (Peter Reid I’m looking at you...)

Re: Atom Issues

2016-08-25 Thread Dave Kilroy

Hi Matt - I got rid of the ugh red error popups a while back by uninstalling
and reinstalling Atom (I suspect the linter plugin was the culprit…)

Re: Ideas for LiveCode workshops - help needed

2016-08-16 Thread Dave Kilroy
Thank you all for your ideas, questions and suggestions

First of all, as regards who will be coming to the workshop - basically I’ll
take anyone with a pulse (might even take the undead…).

Therefore I have to cater for a wide range of capabilities. Maybe in the future
when I have more of an established audience/group here I can do stuff more
tailored to what they need but as of now I need to cater for as wide an
audience as possible (hence my email to the usegroup)

That said, from other workshops I’ve done here I think I’ll have two main types
- those who are completely new to coding and those who are proficient in other
languages and want to give LiveCode a whirl…

It sounds like between us all LiveCoders we have a long list of training we
would like to receive ourselves, if I have time I’ll set up a Facebook survey
thingy to see what the most popular workshop topics might be - and from there
we could see what ways we would have to addressing that need.

So as to my workshop on September 17th, I think I’m gravitating towards the fun
‘scribbling-on-photos-of-your-friends’ app idea - I know how to do a basic
version of scribbling on mobile and if others were to donate more advanced
graphic-effect snippets (I’m looking at you John) that would be lovely to keep
my more advanced participants happy

Kind regards

Dave

Re: Ideas for LiveCode workshops - help needed

2016-08-04 Thread Dave Kilroy
Thank you all for your ideas and suggestions!

I’m summarising them as follows:
A drag and drop matching game.
A to-do list app.
A simple e-reader app.
A walking tour app with a map that you can click for additional information and
photos.
An app that helps with web research (grab text and images, write notes &
emails, filter and ordering).
A client-server user registration system.
A bare bones personal cloud type thing with clients for every platform.
Go through all past conferences and look at the different track subject matter.
Try to solicit other to be presenters.
Focus on UI/UX - everything must look 2016 rather than 1995

I’ve also remembered a suggestion I once got from a teacher for a workshop
topic "A humorous photo editor (draw moustaches etc on photos of your friends)"

MESSAGING APP

@rjd318 this is a link to a thread on the forum from a year ago covering the
workshop where we did the messaging app (including an introductory video and
download link to get the stack and .lc script)
http://forums.livecode.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=24465
<http://forums.livecode.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=24465>. Since then I ran
another version of this workshop in a different environment and I added some
more polish to the app - let me know if what I did was of interest and I’ll dig
out the newer version for you.

Got any more ideas? Keep ‘em coming!

Kind regards

Dave

Ideas for LiveCode workshops - help needed

2016-08-04 Thread Dave Kilroy
This is a request for ideas for LiveCode workshops

That is, where one of us is organising a day-long workshop on LiveCode and are
looking for a main topic for the day.

I’m not looking for fully-worked up teaching resources (although that would be
nice), but general ideas or topics for the workshop - so that we can say to
people, and publicise “come to this LiveCode workshop where we will build …” or
“at this LiveCode workshop you will learn how to …”.

In the past I’ve done LiveCode workshops where the main idea has been:
- build a mobile messaging app (that connects to a web service and mysql
database)
- build desktop widgets (little things like an app that watches a folder, using
the clipboard etc)
- learn how to search documents and save notes with LiveCode

I think my ideal would be to get an idea which is:
- a ‘draw’ (afterall I want lots of people to turn up!), something like “learn
now to connect to the Pokemon Go! API”
- doesn’t involve me doing too too much preparation work for the workshop
- can give a positive experience to participants with differing levels of
ability (perhaps by my preparing some partly completed exercises for those who
need them)

So, ideas and suggestions please!

Kind regards

Dave

it

Re: Get fillGradient props

2016-07-10 Thread Dave Kilroy
OK Monte how about naming convention for widgets?

I currently prepend widget names with “wj” - what do the rest of use

This is all great fuel for the scripting style panel at the conference. Also we
have:

- strict compilation
- being even stricter by also declaring repeat loop iteration variables (I do
this)
- declaring variables at the top of the handler or in the block they are used.
Ali and I do the latter and Peter B thinks it's poor style because we don't
have block scoped variables.
- anything else we can come up with

Cheers

Monte

Re: Fwd: LC / WordPress / CGI challenge

2016-05-29 Thread Dave Kilroy
Richard, actually you might be better off with Alex's suggestion of a WP
plugin.

iFrames in WP with .lc content work fine, but from within an iFrame I don't
think there is a way for your Livecode Server script to access WP's data on
the user/session and thence know whether a user has rated a particular film
once, never or 100 times.

If you work within the WP ecosystem a plugin should be able to access
relevant hooks to limit users use of your film ratings (depending on your
requirements - are these guests or logged in WP users...)

In the past I worked with Simon Smith to create a 'code bridge' with a
WooCommerce (within WP) transaction - and this continues to function nicely
- but it is a lot of work and until Todd's library to access the WP API
you're most likely better off working from within WP...

Kind regards

Dave

Re: Ho to pay pledge

2016-05-25 Thread Dave Kilroy
I got the email, got the link, paid successfully with credit card (at least
according to messages on the page), got a receipt email from livecode and
another one from stripe - but just checked my bank account and they haven't
taken the money yet...

Re: create a library in LCB - is there also a step by step lesson

2016-05-24 Thread Dave Kilroy
Hi Mathias the answer is YES! There is a very fine lesson in the dictionary -
however it is best to use the dictionary from version LC 8.1.0(dp1) or later
as this version updates the sample code to current syntax.

To get the lesson:

1 - in LC 8.1.0(dp1) or later open the dictionary
2 - wait a few seconds without worrying as things load
3 - click the 'Guide' tab in the top-left
4 - wait a few seconds more without worrying as things load
5 - find the dropdown control close to the top-left and click it
6 - select "Extending LiveCode" from the list
7 - follow the instructions to create your version of 'the pink circle'
widget

If you're like me you'll need a fair bit of protected time to do this as you
read background documents, tinker with settings, try new functions etc - but
the example works nicely and opens up a whole new vista of LiveCode
opportunities!

Kind regards

Dave

Re: Suspense

2016-05-23 Thread Dave Kilroy
Over at https://livecode.com/project/infinite-livecode/ I've left a comment
saying I’ll add another $250 to my pledge if I can find another person
who’ll also increase theirs by the same.

Reply to this post and/or contact me directly (but before 9 pm) and we’ll
make a pledging pact – anyone up for this?

Kind regards

Dave

Re: Livcode and AWS S3 (Windows)

2016-05-21 Thread Dave Kilroy
Hi Skip - I've also 'consumed' AWS services - but as the 'mobile guy' brought
in by the main contractor - they and I worked out a little API so that all
my iOS app I had to do were simple post and get using an xml structure to
get and receive what was required at each stage. Whilst developing this app
they were completely in charge of the web service - so if you are wanting to
get directory listings etc I think it will be something you'll have to ask
the people running code on the server for...

Re: Problems with Xcode

2016-05-20 Thread Dave Kilroy
Hi Martin, I notice from your error message that LiveCode is trying to
connect to Xcode2.app, is that what you have called your copy of Xcode 6.2
or is that an older version of Xcode on your system?

Sometimes the path to Xcode does not get updated in LiveCode's 'mobile
support' preferences and that can produce errors similar to yours...

First thing to try is to remove references to Xcode completely in LiveCode's
preferences pane, exit and restart LiveCode and enter the path to the
correct version of Xcode - follow that with a test build

If that doesn't work and you are comfortable with terminal then open
terminal and type "xcode-select -p" (without the quote marks) - this should
give you the system-wide default path to Xcode assets - if it points to the
wrong version then you can reset it by entering "sudo xcode-select -switch
/path/to/this/xcode/version" (swapping out "/path/to/this/xcode/version"
with the path to the version of Xcode you want to use)

BTW I used the differentiate and store old versions of Xcode by renaming the
Xcode app file, but I've had no more trouble since I instead made version
numbered folders for them (within the Applications folder) so that each
version of the app is still called "Xcode.app"

Please note: the above terminal commands worked for me, and I got them from
a LiveCode staff member ages ago - but I know very little about terminal so
I offer those snippets with NO GUARANTEE WHATSOEVER which is why I suggest
only those who know what they are doing in terminal use them

Best of luck!

Dave
