RE: unsubscribing

2024-07-30 Thread Douglas A. Ruisaard via use-livecode
Old men get to be grumpy ... it's one of the few "benefits" of getting to my
age, that and being selectively hard of hearing, seriously wondering why
youngsters get tattoos on their faces and admiring beautiful women without
them being offended. I actually *do* have this forum's incoming already
filtered to a certain degree but really felt that the topic had run its
course sufficiently to have the members "move on". I have, over the past
few decades, greatly admired and benefitted from the sage advice, examples
and knowledge that members of this group have selflessly donated to our
collective skills and successes. But the licensing thread seemed to have
become redundant, unproductive and (IMHO) having little relevance to the
"normal" precise and valuable guidance and lessons I often have found
amongst these discussions ... hence my response.

It is a misunderstanding that I was criticizing the nature of the topic ...
simply the duration, lack of direction and (to me) its eventual deficiency
of relevance to what I believe to be the beneficial aspects of the "normal"
technical topics presented and discussed. If anything, I felt that the
topic content may have produced much more confusion and anxiety in many of
the participants rather than aiding them in understanding what seems to be a
fairly complex subject and highly specific to individual environments. I
forgot to mention the acceptable advantage of being astonishingly selfish
once you reach your golden years and beyond.

As to when I will rejoin ... once I get bored with NOT hearing the wisdom of
the members. Interesting that shortly after my diatribe, that topic seems
to have dissipated. I continue to wish everyone success in their endeavors
and will, no doubt, open the window on your knowledge in the future.

Might be a bit late to suggest this, but why not set up an email rule to
archive/trash/whatever these emails, then remove the rule when you feel
things have calmed down? For one thing, how will you know that time has come

Forty years ago, HyperCard and Supercars ran on 8 MHz, 16 bit, 68000s. (OK, it
was a 16/32 design, but still).

However, it was *not* snappy by any means.

I suspect that you’d need a rather stripped down version of LiveCode on a
microcontroller, both to get adequate performance and to cut power.

But I’d definitely be interested.

My next round of tinkering will probably be with a device like that, as the
wifi or ble controller I attach to arduinos seem to have more than an arduino’s
worth of processing power left.

Dear Livecode lovers,

It's been a while since I've had the opportunity to contribute to our
discussion group, and I'm excited to share a new project I've been working on
with Livecode Server.

In this project, I've been utilizing Livecode to establish communication with
the serial port of a PC, leveraging Livecode Server to interface with an ESP32
microcontroller. What I've discovered is that Livecode truly shines as a
scripting language in this context. It offers exceptional productivity
advantages compared to languages like Python, particularly when it comes to
text manipulation tasks.

I wanted to take a moment to reach out and let you know that if you have any
interest in microcontroller programming with Livecode or if you'd like to learn
more about my project, please feel free to get in touch with me. I'd be more
than happy to share insights, experiences, and collaborate on this exciting
endeavor!

Sorry, I did not get that you meant the highlight color of the input field
of the message box when the text is selected.

I see that you use Window. I am on a Mac. The highlight color for all text
in LC on a Mac is controlled by "System Preferences" -> "General". and is
applied system wide to all apps.
No idea how this is handled on Windows Computers.

For me the backgroundcolor of the input line of the MessageBox is controlled
by my setting of the backgroundColor of the Script Editor in LC Preferences.
That also changes the backgroundcolor of the input field of single line and
multiline input field of the message box.

Using LC v9.6.8 Business on Windows 10. When I drag a new object from the
Tools Palette onto a card, as the object "enters" the destination card, the
background of that card turns a VERY dark blue . making the visibility of
the object-being-dragged very difficult to see until I release the mouse
button. Additionally, the background/highlight color of the entry field on
the Message Box is, similarly, very dark blue after I enter a command .
making the text (again) very difficult to read.

RE: issue related to Print.PrintSupport.Source.dll

2022-08-18 Thread Douglas A. Ruisaard via use-livecode
I VERY much appreciate the feedback … it helps not to feel isolated with a
virtually unsolvable issue which affects one’s credibility with clients. It is
somewhat strange that this does seem to implicate LC to some degree, though. A
version of my code which (probably) used whatever LC version was fairly current
in 2013 (I should, but don’t, keep track of what version of LC I use for
various releases of my applications) DOES NOT exhibit this issue on the very
same installations which are experiencing the error.

I would have used LC v 9.1 to produce the standalone which is *VERY*
occasionally exhibiting this issue. So … apparently … sometime along the way,
LC changes seem to have “promoted” the potential for this error.

I’ve told the customers that I cannot possible fix something which I cannot
reproduce. I’ve also insinuated that even if LC *does* discover and fix the
underlying issue, that I *WILL NOT* re-issue a new version with the VAST
majority of 5,000+ installations NOT experiencing a problem … citing the amount
of regression testing which would be mandated as a part of such a revision.

Again, thanks for the responses… this group is ALWAYS awesome in its support
and knowledge!

If you have a business license, then you have access to the "Advanced

license.

And if you have a current subscription or a lifetime license with lifetime
updates, then why don't you download the latest release of LC, which is
9.6.8 btw.?

license info

2022-07-15 Thread Douglas A. Ruisaard via use-livecode
Largely because I'm not crystal clear as to how to frame the following
request for information, I'd VERY MUCH appreciate if the LIVECODE mothership
could point me in the right direction.

Currently I am using LIVECODE Business Edition v 9.6.1 (build 15522) on a
Windows 10 PC (not a server) with the latest updates installed.

The recent discussion regarding : ".the following tsNet features are in
included in the Pro Features ." from matthias rebbe posting from July 15
suggests that I could greatly simplify a significant application I developed
and manage for a major Health Care Laboratory here in Canada. The features
enumerated might be able to eliminate a very expensive 3rd party SFTP server
I currently employ for communicating and transferring very sensitive medical
information to external clinics and hospitals (over 5,000 of them).

I would sincerely appreciate if someone could give me even a ballpark dollar
figure I'd have to pay in order to upgrade my current license (see above) to
whatever is necessary to incorporate the "tsNet Pro" features Matthias
described. I only need the one development license for Windows since I
distribute the app from the STANDALONE feature of LIVECODE.

Hopefully that's enough information to frame my request so I can pass a
fairly accurate cost estimate to the end-user.

Sincerely

My apologies. The locked script was a holdover from another time. When the
audience for a software is other scripters, leaving source accessible is
mutually beneficial.

I've now removed the password protection, and in addition to fixing that
issue I also updated the UI to be a little more modernly spacious, making
its list of properties a but easier to read.

RE: Property Sheet for LC (was Re: Right click in field for menu)

2022-06-04 Thread Douglas A. Ruisaard via use-livecode
Looks like a very nice utility ... *BUT*, I get an error when trying to run
it, either directly from the GoLiveNet app or by installing it and letting
it run:
"There was an error executing a script in the stack 4WProps. No more
information is available because the stack is password protected"

Although the pop-up does appear. The drop-down field at the top of the
pop-up references: stack "libConcord". The other "options" from the
drop-down list are: "card id 1002" and "Global Properties". Choosing either
of these two choices also produces the error described above.

I am running Livecode v 9.6.1 on Windows 10 Pro

Subject: Property Sheet for LC (was Re: Right click in field for menu)

Inspectors are great in consumer tools because they provide a convenient way
for less technical types to access the relatively small number of properties
needed for the narrow range of tasks most consumer apps provide.

Property Sheets are the go-to for most professional development tools
because they provide a complete list of all properties supported GUI objects
can support. Sooner or later you'll need even the most obscure properties,
and by listing them all you can anticipate what's there to help solve
problems like the focus issue in this thread.

LiveCode doesn't yet have a Property Sheet, so many devs aren't aware of the
full rich scope of LC's object properties. And when they are, it means
opening the Message Box and typing the setting statement by hand.

So I made a Property Sheet for LC some time ago, accessible right from your
IDE: in the Development menu see Plugins -> GoLiveNet, and you'll find "4W
Props" in the Stacks section.

It updates to show the full list of properties for the current selected
object, and even provides a custom property editor as well.

What i forgot to mention:
The bluetooth device needs to support this. If you have paired the Windows PC
with a device that supports a virtual com port, then you should be able to add
a com port in that settings and link it to that bluetooth device.

I've searched thru the forum and cannot find any references to this. Virtual
Com Port (VCP) is associated with USB and FTDI chips (or emulations) and is
used for Serial communications (common in Arduino builds) but I've never heard

Android Bluetooth / USB would be the ideal as seems to be the most used
interface protocol. Livecode has Bluetooth for Windows via VCP and on IOS via
MergeBLE.

Just Android needed to be cross platform in real world interfacing.

Hi all,

Does the replaceText() function allow the use of backreferences to
retain
groupings of text between matches. For example, if I have some text like
this:

Good stuff here.

I want to end up something like this:

Good stuff here.”

In BBedit I can search for (.*) and
replace it with \1 and it preserves the run of text designated
by
parentheses.
(I know, I can get more fancy on matching the runs of html tags, but I’m
mainly interested in retaining the text, not in regex madness.)

In LC this does not work:

 put replaceText(myText,"(.*)”,”\1”) into myText

I just end up with \1, when I want Good stuff here.

Can replaceText even do this?

I don't expect to have my hand held to install, what should be, a
straight-forward set of steps to install and develop for an Android

LIVECODE forum, I still cannot find a comprehensive set of installation
steps... which needs to include ACCURATE and CURRENT links to the HUGE
variety of Java SDK/JDK (the Java nomenclature drives me crazy). Many of
the links to Java v8 no longer work (e.g. reproduced links from Jacque by

RE: export a stack and recreate it it by script

2021-09-15 Thread Douglas A. Ruisaard via use-livecode
You might also check out "Script Reporter".. which should be available
somewhere on the LC site. It's a GREAT program which reads entire stacks
(one at a time, mind you) and allows a cut & paste of the code into a simple
text file. Like Ben's suggestion, I use it extensively for version
differences. You can also simply paste the output (one card at a time) back
into the LC editor and you've got a newly generated project.

If Ben's option offers a multiple card-at-a-time solution, THAT would be
superior to Script Reported in this context, but it's still is another
option.

Hi,

I have been lurking for a while and do not really write code anymore.
However, I am in a situation, where I need to maintain a very old
project, that consists of a large(ish) collection of stacks that is
crashing frequently with newer engine versions. My suspicion is that it

I had a very similar problem recently (although I was *not* using LC for the
email processing). I found a small but great *free* shareware app called
"SwithMail" by "tbare" which solved the same issue of needing TLS support.
It's reasonably small (550 Kb) yet has a rich feature set. I'd suggest you
at least look into it as a possible solution.

A very venerable app (original version perhaps 15 years ago) is still
running
on a client's Windows box, every night, processing data and emailing a
report.

The email is sent using Shao Sean's libSMTP library, which has performed
faithfully for all these years. Unfortunately, the client's replacing their
local smtp server with outlook365.com - which requires TLS authentication -
which I don't believe libSMTP supports.

The current version of the app is built in LiveCode 6.7.11. There is a huge
amount of text to be processed, and - as you might imagine after this long
development, with regular changes and additions - the processing is very
complex. A few years ago I did look at rebuilding it in LC 8/9, but because
of
the changes to unicode handling there was a lot of perturbation in the data,

and there wasn't time/budget to track all this down in order to get a
reasonable new version. I still occasionally need to make tweaks to the
processing, but I do that in my trusty LC 6.7.11.

So now I've hit a problem. There still isn't budget for a major exercise to
rebuild it in a modern version of LiveCode, so I can't just switch to using
tsNet.

Is it theoretically possibly to tweak libSMTP to work with TLS, or is there
some basic limitation with LC 6.7 that would make that impossible? Are there

any other libraries that work with TLS? Or (I'm not a Windows person) is
there
some simple way I could set up a local SMTP server on the Windows box that
would accept the email from my LiveCode app and forward it to outlook365?

Any suggestions or experience gratefully received.

move cursor to the end of a line in a field

2020-12-23 Thread Douglas A. Ruisaard via use-livecode
I need to position the cursor at the end of the contents of a single line
field. This can be "manually" done by pressing the "END" key while the
cursor is in that field. I want to do that positioning programmatically...
but ...

I've searched all of the "...KeyDown" message options (e.g. commandKeyDown,
controlKeyDown, optionKeyDown) and the other "key" message options (e.g.
functionKey) and cannot find one which will tell me what the "END" key is...
a Windows resource tells me it is "35"

"rawKeyDown" tells me the raw key is 65367 ... but how do I "send" a rawkey
value to the active field? Or, ideally, can someone tell me how to
"emulate" the "END" key and position the cursor at the end of the contents
of a single line field?

Likely simple but I just can't work it out. Thanks in advance!

RE: return "error" code from standalone compile

2020-12-10 Thread Douglas A. Ruisaard via use-livecode
I use AUTOHOTKEY... as a fast, dirty way to "get stuff done" when I'm either
too lazy or too rushed to do a "quality" job with Livecode. It has a command
called "Run" & "Runwait" ... which returns the calling program's (Livecode
executable, in this case) return code into a predefined variable called
"ErrorLevel" (how original!). So a line in a AUTOHOTKEY script for this would
look like:

cmd = c:\livecode\SomeLiveCode.exe
RunWait, %cmd%,,UseErrorLevel
exitcode := ErrorLevel
if (exitcode > 1)

Autohotkey takes some getting used to but I think it's a handy addition to
development projects.. since AHK scripts can be compiled into executables,
themselves.

My 4.5 cents

Since Livecode is written in C++ here is some
info about using return in C.

Every C program has a function named main. At the
end of the function the programmer usually writes a
return 0;

That tells the c program the code has completed
and is exiting with a 0 value which confirms it has
successfully executed the code and is quitting.

At any point above that line the programmer can write
a return call but they will usually use a 1 on another
value. The program will exit the code at that point and
it does not matter what value is entered after the return
but 1 usually means the code failed and any other value
but 0 means anything you want it to mean.

return "error" code from standalone compile

2020-12-09 Thread Douglas A. Ruisaard via use-livecode
On the completion of a stack, can the compiled executable return an error
code like the old DOS ErrorLevel value(s)? If so, how do you specify the
error code? in the on closeStack call?
