OT: Convert WMA to AIFF or MP3

2003-12-06 Thread Sannyasin Sivakatirswami
Does anyone know of sound software that runs on OSX that will convert
Window Media Audio files to AIFF or MP3? There are some really fabulous
hand held gadgets out there that will record high quality sound you can
stick the thing in a little fire wire dock and transfer to your mac and
listen... problem is we need to take those WMA formats and turn them
into MPG.

Email me off list. Thanks!

RISC OS

see www.riscos.com
full drag and drop, a word compatable app that runs on 800K. Xara was
originally written for it and it was called Artworks. DTP app was also
written by the xara team (computer concepts) with full rotational graphics
etc etc. not bad for 1991. :- let alone 2003. :-)

Ohh forgot to add that this was originally RISC OS from Acorn. They
designed chips and desktops and an OS.
They then made Acorn Risc Machines which became ARM. I used to have a
StrongARM desktop, now the Xscale, in 1997.

The Machines are now made by Castle Technology see www.Iyonix.com and have
600Mhz X scales. Now for the good bit. THey are VERY fast. THe OS is only
4Mb and is on Chip on the motherboard. So you dont need to lead the OS.
Switch on and you get the desktop in 3-4 seconds.

ANN: ClipLinkViewer 031205 available

Some fixes to my one-trick-pony:

http://www.shopperturnpike.com/usefulsoftware/cliplinkviewer.html

Thanks to Jacqueline's suggestions, it no longer skips every other
clip. Description:
ClipLinkViewer is an application which will play in succession all
video clips within a selected folder (directory). Clips within the
folder may also be viewed individually. Compatible video formats
include avi, mov, dv, mpg and mp4.
ClipLinkViewer is designed for conveniently viewing the video output of
(primarily still-photo) digital cameras, which typically consists of
many short video clips.

I could use confirmation that it works on various system configurations

File move app part 2

2003-12-06 Thread Bob Hartley
Hi all.

I'm stuck.

I have created an app to move selective files based on their filetype and
(sometimes) included text.
This code (below) lets you choose a directory, walk it and view a list. OK
so far. Now on my second weekend learning revolution; I have linked a
checkbox to a filter. :-) In my edited section I filter gHierList depending
on whether one button is pressed. However, If I want to filter for two (eg
jpg and gif) I double filter and end up with no selection.

I thought of creating a global eg gBobList and on each line create a local
variable eg bobgif. Then would copy ghierlist into the local variable,
filter the local and add to the final global (boblist). I need a global
since another button will do something with this. In addition I want to
view the list in the window.

Can anyone think of a simpler way?

cheers
Bob
code below

global gHierList
on mouseUp
  put empty into gHierList
  put empty into field 1
answer folder "Pick a folder you want to walk:"
if it is empty then exit mouseUp
  set lockCursor to true
  set cursor to watch
  directoryWalk it
-- I added this bit today
if the hilite of button "JPEG" is true then filter gHierlist with "*.jpg"
if the hilite of button "BIORAD" is true then filter gHierlist with
"*raw*.pic"
if the hilite of button "GIF" is true then filter gHierlist with "*.gif"
-- end of my edit
  sort gHierList
  put gHierList into field 1
put number of lines of fld 1
  set lockCursor to false
end mouseUp

on directoryWalk whatFolder
  set the defaultFolder to whatFolder
  put the files into temp
repeat for each line x in temp
put whatFolder & "/" & x & return after gHierList
  end repeat
  put the folders into tDirList
repeat with x = 2 to the number of lines of tDirList
directoryWalk (whatFolder & "/" & (line x of tDirList))
  end repeat
end directoryWalk

Re: dontusequicktime

2003-12-06 Thread Klaus Major
Hi Thomas J McGrath III,

Klaus,

As usual, Thanks for the prompt reply.
:-)

So the real kicker here is that the dontusequicktime does not actually
happen on the Mac.
That was what had me stumped.
I sent a letter to the 'Boss' asking if it was OK to require the end
users to have quicktime installed.
I hope that "iTunes for Windows" will become more wide-spread, since it
comes with he latest
version of QT -> 6.4 :-)

That would of course be the best approach and the easiest for me. But
if not then I can still do it
via the export to .png and then display via ONE graphic and handle the
code via script.

That brings up another question: If I use the .png files and write
generic code to handle the
loading of images from a folder then I might be able to gain a bit
more control over individual
slides i.e. if a slide has 'links' on it I can stop there and allow
the user to click on a clear button.
I know we can mark a card but is there a simple way to mark an image???
No way...

But you could workaround by creating several groups with the
appropriate "noop" buttons it
and show/hide them as needed...

A clever naming will really help in that case :-)

Like setting the group's name to the filename of the correspondig image,
then you could script something like:
...
hide grp (the filename of img "my_pp_sildes")
set the filename of img "my_pp_sildes" to (next/prev/last/first
image...)
show grp (the filename of img "my_pp_sildes")
...

You get the picture... ;-)

Thanks again Klaus and have a good weekend yourself...

Hmmm, the way I usually do this is to use QuickTime sprites to add the
interactivity to the image and load it into a player but that
obviously won't work here :) This is nice since the interactivity
becomes part of the movie you create from the still image.

One way is to create some XML markup that represented your
presentation. You could then load that into Revolution which would
dynamically create the presentation based on the XML. Then you are
just creating a shell to parse the XML and present everything. Within
the XML you could have coordinates which define an interactive region.
It might take a little longer to design at first but it would be very
useful moving forward. You could even create a Revolution app that
let you create the XML file and define the interactive regions.

You can use QuickTime Player Pro (Edit->Delete Track) to delete the

Hi Thomas J McGrath III,

Hello all,

I have a small problem. Well many problems actually, but that's for
another list.

I have thousands of Powerpoint files that I need to bring into REV
projects. (This is a great opportunity for me) I know I have asked
about this before and I got one response from someone?? that said to
try Keynote from Apple to export an interactive .mov file.
So I bought keynote and exported a .mov file and IT WORKS, in REV, on
OSX. And all of my Powerpoints look better too. Great.

PROBLEM:
Except it does not work on Windows without Quicktime installed. I
have two questions:

Q1: Is anyone aware of a Windows player/format for a .mov file with
a sprite track in it??
(The sprite track I think is what allows the interactive part to work
in the .mov file)
I tried .mpg in windows but no luck. How about .avi???
Nope, sorry, no equivalent for Interactive QT on windows...

Q2: Why if I set the dontusequicktime and dontusequicktimeeffects to
TRUE does the .mov
file still work fine in OSX but not in Win 2000 or Win XP?
No, "dontusequicktime" will prevent QT from loading and once set, it
cannot be switched back
until you restart RR/your standalone...

I thought that setting them to true forced REV to not use Quicktime??
Then how do these still work in OSX???
I don't know if "dontusequicktime" works on a Mac... And why should
it??? ;-)
QT IS THE (only) mac-house-brand multimedia engine!
And an important part of OS X!

Q3: If Rev IS able to handle a .mov with sprites in OSX WITHOUT
Quicktime then why is REV not able to do it in Windows???
See above...

PS; I don't know how to remove the sprite track - any suggestions???
QuickTime Pro?

Sorry don't know any other possibility...

But i'm not sure that just removing a sprite track will do what you
want...

I thought that if I removed the sprite track and converted the .mov
to .avi
that maybe I could control the .avi without Quicktime in REV.

PSS; The only other solution I have come up with is to export the
Powerpoint files into individual
slides saved as .PNG files (Keynote won't export individual slides).
Then I import images as ref
control from folder ;-) and then set them all to invisible and put a
blank button over top of them to
show hide all of them. This works but was rather complicated and a
bit slower than the .mov was.
I just thought of using set the imagedata (I think that was in
SuperCard) AND I am pretty sure Rev
has this ability. That way there is only one graphic on screen
instead of hundreds BUT again I
am sure that will be slower than the .mov file.
I would suggest to set the filename of one (only) image on the card...
Almost no memory overhead :-)
(See an example stack on my website -> X-Talk -> Auto slide lite)

Drop a line if you need more info/assistance about this...

ANY HELP is appreciated,
Thanks to you all for being my lifeline here.
:-)

Tom
Enjoy your weekend :-)

So I bought keynote and exported a .mov file and IT WORKS, in REV, on
OSX. And all of my Powerpoints look better too. Great.

PROBLEM:
Except it does not work on Windows without Quicktime installed. I have
two questions:

Q1: Is anyone aware of a Windows player/format for a .mov file with a
sprite track in it??

But i'm not sure that just removing a sprite track will do what you
want...

I thought that if I removed the sprite track and converted the .mov to
.avi
that maybe I could control the .avi without Quicktime in REV.

PSS; The only other solution I have come up with is to export the
Powerpoint files into individual
slides saved as .PNG files (Keynote won't export individual slides).
Then I import images as ref
control from folder ;-) and then set them all to invisible and put a
blank button over top of them to
show hide all of them. This works but was rather complicated and a bit
slower than the .mov was.
I just thought of using set the imagedata (I think that was in
SuperCard) AND I am pretty sure Rev
has this ability. That way there is only one graphic on screen instead
of hundreds BUT again I
am sure that will be slower than the .mov file.

:-)

Tom
Enjoy your weekend :-)

dontusequicktime

2003-12-06 Thread Thomas J McGrath III
Hello all,

I have a small problem. Well many problems actually, but that's for

HyperSudio uses a completely different format and language, so that's out.
Ok thanks Richard.

Just curious: What are you looking to gain by authoring in Rev and porting
to the subset of features available in HyperCard?
Compatability with a platform that rev doesn't run on but there is a
hyperstudio port.

Not a problem really. :-)

Using A PC BTW. :-( Need one for work.

Hi Sishi,

Thanks for the compliments regarding my technical
knowledge ; however, the fact that I happen to know a
few things about a particular domain (databases/report
builder) doesn't make me an overall expert, I'm afraid
(for example, I know little to nothing about the
animation manager).

While it is true that it may take the list some time
to pick up on certain questions (especially
non-trivial ones), someone will step up to offer some
sort of assistance in the next two or three days.

If you want individual assistance, I'm sure one of the
consultants on the Revolution webpage will be more
than happy to collaborate with you on your project as
contract work for a reasonable price. Direct link :

Now, to get back to your questions :

1) An option menu can only have one font. As Ken
suggested, you could use a menu-stack, but this
particular case is very complicated. It might be
better to provide a Font settings dialog.
Here's a little script that fills up a field named
"FontNames" with the names of all the installed fonts,
and allows a limited preview :
--
  put the fontNames into tFontNames
  put tFontNames into fld "FontNames"
put the number of lines of tFontNames into tTotal
  repeat with i = 1 to tTotal
set the textFont of line i of fld "FontNames" \
to line i of tFontNames
  end repeat
--

2) Retrieving the correct icons for files on Windows
as well as MacOS pre-X, and MacOS X is a different
task for each platform, and a quick search through the
archives shows no one that has accomplished it so far.
Direct link for searching the archives :

Would it suffice to just use the standard 'Open file'
dialog box ? That can be achieved by using the 'answer
file' command. Here's an example :
--
answer file "Please select a file to open"
  # first check if the user canceled
if it is empty then exit to top
  # otherwise copy the file path into a variable
  put it into tFilePath
--

Best regards,

Jan Schenkel.

As for HyperCard, well, it's pretty much dead. It's old-school monochrome
achitecture has never been updated for OS X (or even OS 7 in some respects
).

Think of Revolution as HyperCard 4.0 :)

Just curious: What are you looking to gain by authoring in Rev and porting

Hi Ton,

Maybe the following is a better example. Suppose you
have a query named "MyFirstQuery".
--
  put revQueryLongName("MyFirstQuery") into \
  tQueryObject
  put the cREVDatabaseQuery["dbhost"] of tQueryObject
--

For a list of all your query objects, use the
undocumented function 'revQueryObjects'

So if you only want a quick way to change the host for
all your queries, you can do something like :
--
  put <_the_new_host_> into tNewHost
  put revQueryObjects() into tQueryObjects
repeat for each line tQueryObject in tQueryObjects
set the cREVDatabaseQuery["dbhost"] of \
tQueryObject to tNewHost
  end repeat
--

Hope this helped,

Jan Schenkel.

Hi all.
I know of a platform that can run hyperstudio. This can access hypercard files.
Can revolution save as hypercard or hyperstudio?

Re: How to Display Font Face Previews in Option Menu?

2003-12-06 Thread shishilite
Thanks for your reply, Ken.

I previously asked the following question to the mailing list but have not
received any reply yet:

I would like to show a list of files in a directory and display the correct
icon next to each file (in both Windows and Mac).

So, how do I do this? I know how to show the file listing, but I don't know
how to obtain the appropriate icon for each file.

Thanks!

Shishi
