I thought that one generated gradients algorithmically itself, as we
used to do in the pre-Rev 3.0 world. Now that Rev has all those many
properties for the new built-in fillGradient (type, rsmp, from, via, to,

even Mr. Rossi could do. No offense to Scott, but Mark Waddingham's put
in a strikingly complete set of options, enough to satisfy the pickiest
gradient designer. :)

I was reading about those properties this evening, thinking maybe I'd
make a GUI for setting them, but it just seemed to likely that someone
else had already do it, so I thought I'd check in here.

Re: Rev 3.0 crashing on OS X too (as well as Vista and Linux)

2008-10-15 Thread Bernard Devlin
I started up 2.8.1 on OS X (the last version that wasn't crashing
regularly). My general habit is to do a totally new install for each release
(rather than relying on Rev's update feature), in order to have completely
separate environments. It's a bit confusing now because of the way Rev is
using shared locations for things (e.g. like plugins, preferences), because
the 2.8.1 environment hasn't been used in about 6 months, yet it has just
started up with the latest current beta of GLX2 (installed in 3.0, not in
2.8.1). Luckily, I run revNavigator from the old bunkered plugins folders.
So I am at least able to confirm that I was not running the 3.0 beta of
revNavigator, because 2.8.1's plugins folder contains the 2.5 version of
revNavigator. However, I can see that I've done some customization of that
old version of revNavigator so I must have used it a little back then.

I'm still going to run without it for a week to see what happens. And I'll
run without GLX2 also (I've always been very conservative about plugins, and
didn't run any until earlier this year).

Anyway, if that doesn't turn out to be the cause of the instability I'm
stuffed.

Was that about the same time you started using Navigator? I wonder what
would happen if you disabled all the plugins and run with a bare-bones

 explored that.

I'm hoping it's plugins, that would be a very easy fix. Fingers crossed.

Re: Gradient GUI tool?

2008-10-15 Thread Bernard Devlin
I'm not quite sure what you mean. One of the new simple projects I was
working on had a gradient graphic in it. Inside the colored rectangle was a
right angle of 'points'. These points could be picked up and moved about,
and as I did so the qualities of the gradient changed before my eyes.

I have to assume you are referring to something other than that.

Re-4: persistent objects in runrev (howto)

2008-10-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello Richard,

Thank you for your comments!

You wrote:

If you're copying objects, you may find it both more secure and more
convenient to maintain to have as few handlers as possible in those
objects, which merely call handlers in a central library or your app's
mainstack to do the real work,

I did this as you suggests, but since 2 weeks I do it in a more extremistic
way: I (almost) do NOT HAVE ANY script in such objects I want to copy from
stack to tempstack and back. I use the event hierarchy for solving this. In the
stackscript (or cardscript if appropriate), which gets any event from such
objects with empty scripts, I have sth like:

on mouseDown
if the short name of the owner of the target = content then
-- there is only one group content
grab me
select the target
-- etc.
else
...
end if

This has the result that you can move around only the selected object within
the group content, copy the group content from the stack to the tempstack
and back - without disturbing the other objects in the card. And it allows
easily changing the handlers in later versions using the same group content
edited by previous versions.

Since
a) I embed the important (password protected and some not protected) stacks
into the standalone
and
b) as Chipp pointed out the standalone binary cannot be decompiled as easy as
in 2.2.1
and
c) I can load my own encrypted stacks by decrypt stackbinary; go stack
stackbinary
and
d) I even can use the passkey syntax for opening extern protected stacks from a
.rev file by a routine in the standalone which knows the passkey for these
external stacks
I can live with the password mechanisms of runrev.

I was tired and went to sleep for awhile. I agree about the
independent column
alignment. You would always have to justify a whole column instead
of 1 item.
And every time you resized the column it would need to justify it the
column again
which would lead to big problems. But it could be used in special
cases where
the programmer does not want the user to be allowed to resize coiumns
or the
rows are limited. Another quick solution might be justify only what
is visible on
screen and a little bit past or just use a paging system instead of
scrolling.

But some of the other options would work real good for a lot of
people and the
whole concept of making each item become as many different buttons as
you
want will work too. These things could open the doors to fields in
new ways.

It needs to all be done by the Rev team with preferences that can be
turned on
and off like other field preferences but it shows what Rev needs for
the next

Revolution in programming and many parts can be worked in pretty easy.

Hello Andre,

Thanks Andre for your info: Nothing new under the sun (Qohelet)
I had to learn this method of storing objects as binaries by trial and
discussion, because I did not read it in newsletters or sth similar. But I am
glad to have realized it - late but I did ;-) As a result of our discussion in

selected objects into a file and restore it, like existing moduls in
perl, python, java do. And perhaps this could be done with protection
immediately. Or does this exist and I did not realize it?

 sth similar like

export/save group content into URL binfile:content.1.aniweb using passkey
mykey
import/restore group content from URL binfile:content.1.aniweb using
passkey mykey

instead of

create tempstack
copy object xyz from stack contentdesigner to tempstack
save tempstack as ...
delete tempstack

open tempstack
copy object xyz from tempstack into currentstack
delete tempstack (for not running into memory problems with many open
tempstacks).

2008-10-15 Thread Richard Gaskin
Thanks to all who patiently answered my question as though it was from a
sane person. Very gracious of you. :)

Sure enough, once I re-read the docs to learn that gradients are only
available for graphic objects, I was able to find Rev's Gradient tool
easily. It's a nice one.

This raises a question, though: Why are gradients limited to graphics?

I can think of a million places I'd like to use subtle gradients as the
background fill for buttons and even a few fields.

All objects in Rev share the same appearance properties:
backgroundPattern, backgroundColor, etc.

Except now, with gradients.

So now we have another sometimes rule, one more exception for
newcomers to learn.

And we have no gradients for buttons and fields.

Any of you file a request to have gradients implemented across all
controls? If not, I'll file one...

Re: Gradient GUI tool?

2008-10-15 Thread Chipp Walters
Hi Richard,

FWIW, I'd rather the team focus on getting a decent table object put
together. If I need gradients for buttons, I'll use ButtonGadget,
Photoshop or other tool of choice. I've never even seen a gradient
used in a field, and can't envision a case where I'd want such a
thing. I understand about 'rules,' but it's a plain fact different
objects have different properties, not only in Rev but also most all
other OOP environments.

I'd rather have separate blendlevels for controls outside the stack
blendlevel-- as it stands now, if you create a stack which is
partially transparent, all the controls on it are also partially
transparent. I'd like to make some of them more opaque.

It shouldn't be hard to create a simple tool which creates a gradient
and applies it as the bgPattern of a field or other object-- of course
it wouldn't scale correctly with the object, but it's a start.

Just my (not asked for) 2 cents on the topic...

Re: Paint Tool periodic crashes

2008-10-15 Thread Bernard Devlin
Jerry, GLX2's editor introduces so many novel features, I think it is hard
for people to actually assimilate them. It's really an extraordinary tool.
There's still a long way for the Rev 3 script editor to go before it can
match GLX2. So don't be too surprised if people assume that the features
are pedestrian rather than extraordinary. Some of us revolutionaries are
actually very conservative. I know I am - I had a license for GLX2 for 6
months before I tried it, and when I did I was blown away.
For anyone who's not tried it, I think it's well worth spending 30 minutes
trying it out. Being able to zip around one's code using hyperlinks to
handlers is superb. I try to write many short handlers, so it gets pretty
unmanageable in the normal script editor - being able to fold them away in
GLX2 is like the difference between downhill skiing and cross-country
skiing. Not to mention clairvoyance. And click to find. All really good
features.

I understand completely what it is you're saying. I could really write
a book about all the things you could do with GLX2 Tools. As it is,

We put together three videos that are meant to help with the education

happy little discovery - repeat for each key

2008-10-15 Thread Phil Davis
I don't know why I haven't seen this before, but yesterday I discovered
to my great pleasure that we can use array keys in the repeat for each
structure, like this:

repeat for each key tKey in tMyArray
put tMyArray[tKey] into fld tKey of this cd
  end repeat

It's especially useful in cases like the above where your array keynames
are the same as your field names.

To this day I haven't even used the gradient tool and am still pretty
new to Rev but
it sounds to me like it is used to provide different visual
appearances to buttons. It
may seem this should be limited to buttons but when it comes to Rev
taking a stand
and creating a new Revolution of programming by providing a flexible
dynamic table
control Richard is right on the money about adding this option
sometime. Imagine if
you have a table field and you are using numerous button like scripts
for each item.
It would be nice to have the option to make each cell have the
ability to change its
appearance for each button like script that is selected. So if you
were doing a data
base you could have the buttons change when you have the sort option
selected
and if you selected the search the cells would change for the
appearance you set.
Little visual effects like that can make the user experience more
enjoyable and it
would be one more thing that makes your program stand out from the
competition.

That means more sales and who does not want that?

When you talk about hidden columns I am not sure exactly what you
mean but one
thing it could mean is to be able to have a choice if the divider bar
is visible or not.
That would be great too. You could have a part of the field showing
divider bars in
a spreadsheet like option, then you allow white space with various
columns add
a few button like cells in more white space. It would give a visual
of a program all
contained in a field. The options of design and appearance would be
unlimited

once again more enjoyable for the end user.

I am not saying these should be the first priority but it should be
considered by
the Rev team. For all I know providing the ability to hide certain
divider bars is

a simple change to the code they are using so it needs to be considered.

A hidden column is one which is zero-width, useful for keeping IDs
with records without having to display them.

There are various workarounds available for doing this now (such as
splitting the data, storing the IDs in a hidden field, and on sort you
recombine them, sort, and split them again for redisplay), but
fortunately Kevin's hinted that he agrees this would be helpful for DB
work and will look into it. I don't imagine it'll be too hard to do.

I am correct in thinking the hGrid and vGrid apply to the whole
field? That is
nice but it would be better if the hGrid and vGrid could be applied
to separate

cells or separate columns too.

You could have a group of button like cells in white space and then
draw a

rectangle around them or numerous other things can be done. This would
allow the database or spreadsheet be separated by white space from the
buttons cells you add to control them.

Of course this can already be done but the grid lines would be
visible in
areas that I might not want and if I turn them off now the lines to
have a

cell like database would not be seen. Being able to turn them on or off
by cell, row or column would be really nice.

Yes, I understand.

So, to go ahead, I did make this little convert function,
which transforms any seconds into his hh::mm equivalent.
It's a duration in fact, not a clock time !

function MyConvert t
   put t div 3600 into h

The convert command is complex enough that we had a whole scripting
conference on it. Sarah Reichelt is our resident expert:

http://support.runrev.com/scriptingconferences/

Scroll down to #12.

Any integer, when used with date commands, is considered to be a number
of seconds. When used with the convert command, the local system clock
is used for the conversion and takes into account daylight savings. The
seconds are always constant anywhere in the world, but the converted
date and time will vary based on the local clock.

It looks like a bug too me so I reckon you should file a report. I
thought a possible workaround might be to hide the backdrop when the
app was suspended and set it again on resume, but in my tests, the
suspend and resume messages are not being sent.
This would appear to be another bug which I will check out now and
report if it has not already been reported.

The disappearing suspend resume handlers is a GLX2 bug, not a Rev
bug, so I will report it to Jerry. This means that my suggested
 workaround might be fine.

My mistake - this is a bug but it is a Revolution bug, NOT a GLX2 bug.
Sorry for that Jerry.

It seems that if you have more than one stack open, the suspend
resume messages get lost.
I am about to bug report this, but for anyone who wants to test for
themselves, here is my recipe:

- shut down Rev and temporarily remove your Plugins folder from the
relevant folder in your Documents folder. This is to make sure that
any effects are Rev itself and not any add-ons.
- restart Rev
- make a new stack and set it's card script as follows:

on suspend
beep
end suspend

on resume
beep
end resume

- test this by swapping apps. You should hear a beep every time you
leave or come back to Rev.
- make a new stack, either a mainStack or a subStack.
- test again, no beeps :-(

BUT, if you then switch to the browse tool, toggle tools ending on
browse, then the beeps start again.
I can't explain this and it doesn't seem to happen with every stack.

Cheers,
Sarah

Rob,

it's not full screen but you can use the resizeTo javascript routine
to resize the browser to the desired size, it might get you going.

 Rob,

is this RevBrowser stuff or plain Safari for Windows?

I think revbrowser uses IE for windows...

Re: convert to time question

2008-10-15 Thread Larry Watts
I understand that Thierry wanted to convert seconds to show a duration, not a
time of day. For my app, I wrote a rather long piece of code to convert a sum
of seconds into a time display (because I'm a real newbie). I appreciate
Thierry's concise function, to which I added a line for also showing the
seconds in addition to hours and minutes, which is needed in my app.

function MyConvert t

put t div 3600 into h

put ( t - h * 3600 ) div 60 into m

put ( t - h * 3600 ) - ( m * 60 ) into s

return format( %02d:%02d:%02d, h, m, s)

end MyConvert

Thanks Thierry!

Larry

for you. It is not a simple issue.

Yes, I understand.

So, to go ahead, I did make this little convert function,
which transforms any seconds into his hh::mm equivalent.
It's a duration in fact, not a clock time !

function MyConvert t
put t div 3600 into h
put ( t - h * 3600 ) div 60 into m
return format( %02d:%02d, h, m)
end MyConvert

Out of curiosity, I would be very much interested to understand
how we can make the build in convert command work ?

Any convert expert ?

Thierry

Re: Rev 3 Script Editor

2008-10-15 Thread Stephen Barncard

Scott, are you talking about colornames()?

Two questions about the new script editor:

1) In older versions, it was possible to colorize scripts with one's own
color scheme by using choosing colors from a text menu and applying them
anywhere. Can this be done with Rev 3?

2) Is there any way to change the degree of indenting?

revbrowser useragent

2008-10-15 Thread Jim Sims

I'd like to use revbrowser to access a web based chat.
When I try to do that I get We expect one of these browsers
Explorer, Safari, blah blah blah

I'm guessing the site doesn't like whatever useragent the revbrowser
(Safari/webkit?) sends.

Anyone have any hints/ideas on how to get around this problem?

Re: revbrowser useragent

2008-10-15 Thread Terry Judd
Jim - Is that because the default user agent for Rev is ' Revolution
(MacOS)' or whatever, depending on what platform you're using and not that
of the underlying browser being used by RevBrowser. If so then you can
probably just change it using the libURLSetCustomHTTPHeaders command.

I'm just guessing, so I could be way off :)

That's also my guess. I need to be able to do this as a requirement for
a new account. Might be a huge account for me (internet gaming) so
I need to figure this one out somehow.

It seems that the libURL stuff (libURLLastHTTPHeaders(), etc etc) is
separate from revbrowser,

but maybe there is some magic incantation to pass that data?

Here¹s what I get from Safari...

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10_4_11; en)
AppleWebKit/525.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.2 Safari/525.22

And here¹s what I get from RevBrowser...
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10_4_11; en)
AppleWebKit/525.18 (KHTML, like Gecko)

...so RevBrowser is missing the Safari specific info.

I just tried changing the HTTPheaders using the libURLSetCustomHTTPHeaders
command without any noticeable effect on the user-agent reported by a
request originating from RevBrowser so that¹s not looking promising. This
really isn¹t my field of expertise though, so I¹m happy to be proven wrong.

Thanks Terry Alex.

According to bug report 5872 this is only a WebKit/Safari problem.

I do not have a PC here (must get to the other dang island where I
have one)
to test. But if IE works then I'm most of the way there as the company
only

has Windows poker games at this time. But I'll need it for OS X soon.

Thanks again,
