Re: Making the move...
Hello Michael: As a non-developer type I might be able to give you yet another perspective on Rev. I own a post-production finishing house for commercials. My days are crazy with just my normal job and then I have to manage the IT needs and I'm also in charge of engineering. I did a very small amount of HyperCard programming back in '91-'93 and have put together a few filemaker pro databases, but basically have no experience as a programmer. The fact that the program can switch from "programming" mode to "run" mode while you work makes it very easy and quick to see what you're going to get. Using Revolution I have been able to: 1. Automate our web page generation for client feedback. This is a relatively complex setup that reads movies placed in various folders on our webserver and with some user input, generates password- protected php web pages that look every bit as good as others out there. 2. Created a touch-screen interface for iTunes to run on a powerbook in my car. 3. Created a slate generator (slates are the identifiers used in commercials). This program combines some background image with text to create sequential countdowns for our video projects. It runs on XP and OSX. In the month or so it's been running it has generated over 2000 images! I'm in the process of building a home-control application that acts as a client to iRed (an infrared remote server). The cool thing about this app is that it's allowed me to rescue a couple of old machines to use as controllers. The standalone client currently runs on OS9, XP tablet edition and OSX. This in itself is pretty amazing. All of this while doing the rest of my work and without looking back. I strongly recommend the product. Two things, start with v 2.6.1, (especially if you're going to be developing on windows) and I understand that there is a deal where you get Constellation for free. It's worth the $50 it costs anyway, but free is soo much better! :-) So I find that it's the easiest way to write code that can actually do something without having to lear a complex and cryptic language. W. On Mar 10, 2006, at 10:45 AM, Mvreade wrote: Hi, I've been playing with Revolution for a few days and am VERY impressed with its capabilities and ease of use. The property inspector went blank a few times, the application crashed once, the sample database query in the example solutions was updating records, demo videos weren't displaying, to mention a few. So the quesiton is, how good of an environment to work on is it? And how stable are the final applications? For users who have used Rev for databases, I was wondering what it's like to develop a system with, say, 20 tables and lots or relationships and methods? Where would one store all the methods? For relationships, would one just keep a VERYlong list of Database Queries? Rendering Text
I have an solution that I'm trying to put together that will serve as a slate generator for our video production company. Basically a slate is a series of frames that count down (10 to 2) that is placed just before a commercial. This slate has all the information needed to identify a spot. What I need to do is to use this sequence of images as a background and render text on top based on information entered in various fields. The roadblock I'm running into is the actual rendering of the text on an image and then saving it. It occurred to me that it could be relatively easy to do a screen grab of the area, then rename that file and so forth, but I can't figure out how to do this. Ideally I would not have to depend on screen grabs and it would be great to just generate the frames and save them internally. I'm very new to RR so if anyone has any pointers on how to do this I would appreciate it a lot. Thanks!! Re: More about Granny Mckay's steam-driven computer
I tell you something.. One thing RR has done for me and my company is to make some of those really old machines useful again. I have developed a couple of applications for quick web page generation, a slate generator (slates are the identifiers and countdowns used in video commercials) and a pretty fancy remote control system for my home theater (which I will post some information here later as it has turned out to be quite a fun project). In all cases I have been able to revive a few OS9 machines that were lying around the office to act as dedicated front ends for these applications. The remote control application in particular, has allowed me to use a few of the old PowerBook 2400c "Comet" laptops as fancy "whole-house" automation front ends so that I can now control the whole system including volume, sources, modes plus iTunes from anywhere in the house. It's pretty cool to hit a "nighttime" button in the bedroom and have all the lights and all the systems shutdown. So as much as it would be dificult for these machines to do some of the fancier stuff out there, they sure have come back in this other "life" thanks to RR. Well, first of all, if you want to send email directly from Rev, you don't need to use an AppleScript OSAX to do it - you can do it right from inside Rev with Sean Shao's libSMTP with or without Chipp Walter's altEmailHarness wrapper around libSMTP (which makes sending mail super simple). libSMTP: http://66.160.136.21/shaosean/zLibraries.php altEmailHarness: http://www.altuit.com/webs/altuit2/RunRev/Downloads.htm I have them both, but my email server does not like the way libSMTP is formatting the messages and they always fail. Web encoded text on email
So I have this application that generates a website based on files that are placed in various folders. At the end of the process I want to send an email to various parties involved that the site is ready. I am working on OSX with Mail.app as the mail client. On occasion the email will be created with all text looking like web- encoded text (spaces are replaced by %20, etc.) Does anybody know how to avoid this or a workaround of some kind? It doesn't happen every time, only sometimes and I've been trying to figure it out for a long time. Thanks!! Re: How to run a program in a shell
Hello Sarah: Worked very well. I had the whole concept wrong. Thanks for your help. W. What I need is to run htpasswd to generate the encrypted password for .htaccess The problem is that REV won't let me run or even launch a shell. It's supposed to work, but it just doesn't. If anybody knows how to run a shell prog and return it's result I would REALLY appreciate any help. Hi Wally, I have done this many times without problem, although I have never tried it with the htpasswd command. For a simple command, I use somethig like this: put "cd /Users/sarah/Desktop/" & cr & "pwd" into tCmd -- put the shell command into a variable put shell(tCmd) into tResult -- do the shell command and get the result put tResult into fld 1 -- display the result As you can see, I was able to use a 2 line series of commands, by just joining them together with a line break. If the shell command requires sudo, then it gets a bit more complicated, but here is how I do it (this example sets the system clock): put "#!/bin/sh" & cr into tScript put "pw=" & quote & tPass & quote & cr after tScript put "echo $pw | sudo -S date " & tDate & tTime & cr after tScript -- build the command lines put shell(tScript) into tCheck -- do the command & get the result You have to quote your admin password, but you can ask for that when running the script. Finally, you sometimes need to run a shell command in the background. In this case, I use the following syntax, which puts the result into a text file. I then set up a regular check to see if the text file is there and read the result when it's ready (this example pings an IP address, waiting up to 15 seconds for the result, but not blocking anything else from happening during that time): function checkPing pIP put specialFolderPath("Desktop") & "/ping.txt" into tFileName if there is a file tFileName then delete file tFileName put "ping -c1 -n " & pIP into tShellCmd put " > " & tFileName & " 2>&1 &" after tShellCmd get shell(tShellCmd) repeat 15 times wait 1 second with messages if there is a file tFileName then put URL ("file:" & tFileName) into tRes if tRes is empty then next repeat -- file created but no result yet put wordOffset("loss", tRes) into tWord if tWord = 0 then next repeat -- file created but result not complete put word tWord-2 of tRes into tPercent if tPercent = "0%" then return true else return false end if end repeat return false end checkPing I hope these examples help, but if you want any further advice or testing, let me know. No, not using a CGI. I have an app (runs on OSX) that is basically a website generator. Looks at some folders and puts some html wrappers around files there after a user enters some info. Is there any reason why you need htpasswd instead of writing your own password generator? Just naïve about this and curious...
