Re: Documentation & Books+sorry!+conlcusion (?OT)
a clear and crisp Imagin(ation) in my head what an array is. (An Image says more...) After understanding the content of an example you can remember and you can start with try and error and maybe with some good examples, finally to reproduce your own first array. And there was a great addition from Mark?? how you can write it in another way: (Like Monday, wendsday, friday seperated by commas). That explained itself without any words whats the difference in scripting. That gives everbody a faster and better understanding. Slowly I got a first overview. Hence I decidied to make my examples based on this sophisticated programming element (Array). (Maybee I did not understand all in a few minutes, but much more than in years of reading about it here on the list). If I can recover the latest files of my HD I will put them online later. The reason why most of good programmers cant write good instructions, or good scientists are so often bad teachers is that they can not go into the mind of a learner and understand that the learner knows nothing about the theme he knows so much... Let me finally say some words to the dox: Jeanny did a great job making the best of a kind of catastrophic Ur-documentation. But imho she has got a kind of Tantalus job with that. Dan, as I have looked once at examples of his book, did a real great job to make a better documentation. And I think (IMHO) he could maybe solve this Interface/documentation problem. IMHO the big point why these discussion, arises again and again since years on the list, like the good old Nessie. (maybe I should better give up talking about this left/right brain - concerns here in the scripters world, but anyway, i give it another try;) And, one more suggestion: to accommodate the real newbie programmers, Forget the "newbie" "programmers". Get the newbies to programming. Sounds equal, but isnt, why? If you are a "newbie (rev) programmer" then you are a programmer, which is mostly coming from another "programming" tool. That means a left brain-talented person, which is interested in programming and has learned to think like programmers: digital step by step, word by word, tone by tone details etc...) . For him its very easy to understand the structure of a script, because it s language-like: word by word / variable by variable word by variable, etc... He loves to think in that way. Hence he will likely go page by page through a left brain tutorial, Documentation etc, because he understands whats written in these documentation. The other one: newbie to prorgramming. Can be a left talented person but mostly will not be, because he is not interested in programming. until this first contact with a programming tool. Therefore most of them are rightbrain talented person. They like association, Colors, emotions, creativity. But they hate step by step-things. The do not think like a programmer, they have a lot of problems understand whats written in the docs. They need a kind of visual instruction. Judy! They need, first of all an OVERVIEW of all this incomprehensible written details. They are looking for fast capture of the content - with one view. The most important thing for a right brainer is to know the content BEFORE he starts learning. Therefore they need an Index, to get this overview. If they dont get it and must learn from the documentation, they will be frustrated immediately. But we all have learned very early in our childhood: Avoid frustrations! If they cant avoid it or escape of all that frustrations, they will learn to hate rev. (As I have learned, hence I know what I m talking about), Because I m NOT a natural leftbrained programmer. If you are interested in getting the big potential of creativity of the right brainers, they are about 50% of the mankind, but I belive less than 5% of the programmers, then you have to give them a brainfriendly(!) documentation. to have them as satisfied members on board. BTW most of them are not(!) already captured, like 90% of the leftbrainer, by Visual-(anything) and anyhting.NET. Apple got this brainfreindly thing with first Mac OS 6.x, and than with HC. An some HC Dokumentation have been instinctivly written brainfriendly too. That was the great succes of HC in the market of (more rightbrain) Mac Users but newbies to programming. An great brainfriendly authoring tool, not from Apple, was mtropolis. If you have a lot of doubts about this brain matters, which are not from me, thats common knowledge in the brain science, maybee you believe more in the University of Cambridge: Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. Amzanig huh? this works in nearly all languages (aslo acuh in desucth) and gives you an idea how our brain is woking and why a fast overview, indices and keywords are so important for the understanding, and understanding for applying. Because of another project i have not much time at the moment, but if a lot of people are realy interested how my idea of a brainfriendly documentation could look like, I can do a small simple example. my 2 cents regards Wolfgang M. Educators know that in order to have most of their students grasp the information they are trying to get across, they must structure and present their lesson in ways that will trigger all three types of learning. or call it the left/right brain-way... Verbal learners will love the rev documentation. They learn best by verbal communication. They pick things up by reading or listening. The documentation for this type of learner is fabulous. Kinesthetic learners understand things by taking them apart, putting them back together, practicing with the parts. Getting in there and swinging the hammer, pounding a few nails, hands on kind of thing; that is how they learn best. With rev, they will learn the most as they play with the cook book, open up the scripts, seeing how they work, modifying them to see what happens. The rev documentation is OK here, not great, but it has been improving in this area. Exactly thats the point I was talking about on this list since it has started. Finally I gave up. Thanks that you Dave came up and explained it much better than i could. But, how du you think you (we) can get this in to the head of verbal, left brain, digital and sequential working heads of a programmer? The visual learner needs pictures to "see" how things operate. They learn best by looking at screen shots of what is being talked about, looking at a picture of the icon being discussed, by watching the computer move the mouse on the screen to select the proper menu item, by having a little man pop onto the screen and show him what to do, etc. This type of presentation is essential to a visual learner and is almost non existent in the rev documentation. Don't get me wrong, I think that the amount of information in the docs is superb. I also know that adding the visual aspect to the documents will add to their size, but it will open up RR to a vastly larger audience. It will also, I believe, inspire many more people as to what can be done with RR. Revolution has the tools to have a great learning environment for the "Visual" and "Kinesthetic" learner. As mentioned Mark in the first post. But a true beginner imho is not a person with some years experience of Basic, xtalk, Direktor, Javascript or even html... A true beginner is a real true beginner in scripting... Imho an example how to program a PIM is not the right thing. Why..? Some reasons: 1) We still have a great example of scripting the first tool and you cant do it better: http://www.hyperactivesw.com/mctutorial/index.html The only small cosmetic it needs for a real beginner(home) stack is get out the comparison to HC. 2) At the same time thats a perfect start for old HC scripter... But, is that included in the rev packet...? The problem is: All this instruction I have seen are starting with the *second* or maybe the third step called: Hello world A true beginner, needs another thing than scripting hello world. He needs... *An overview about the whole tool * A good explication about the stack/card metapher, *before* he goes in tho the details and start to write the first line of script: Hello world. *A real introduction which shoes him what rev could do in the future for him, if he is willing to learn/(struggle)... *A kind of "try and error"-stack with out the standard scripting error warnings... A module library with prefabricated scripts to solve problem *at the beginning* he will learn to solve later Ant that should not be integrated in the tool itself. That helps nothing. If a beginner opens the tool he wants to do anything, not to search in the Index, cookbook etc. which are to big for beginners. That comes later on.. Let me say that with the words of Antoine de Saint Exuperys little prince: Wenn du Leute suchst um ein Boot zu bauen, dann sprich nicht über die Arbeit, sondern erzähle ihnen von der Weite und der Freiheit des Meeres... (Maybe Klaus or Malte can translate it better). If you nee people to build a ship, then dont talk about the kind of work wich must be done, tell them about the freedom and wideness of the see... To build this packet, is a job, which cant be done by experienced *programmers* neither a technical persons. I think I have seen here only a few persons which could do that: Dan Shafer or Jacqueline and some friends of mine from the german revboard, because they are persons which are able to think with the head of a beginner... That idea of the "true beginner" is nearly as old as the list itself, based allways on hello world. Nearly everybody can reproduce "hello world" with the cook book. But reproducing with a cookbook and producing another ting without i, are 2 very different things. Hence a real beginner could be very fast lost in scripting/error-space and will have his first big frustration. If he cant or is not willing to pass that frustration, he is lost for rev... And believe me, I know what kind of frustrations rev can build in a "non-scripters brain"... Such a kind of packet is revs missing link to start for true beginners, and thats what the good old b/w HC is still ahead. my 2 cent regards Wolfgang M. Therefore it should not prevent you from building OS X apps and distributing them in an application bundle that meets your exact requirements. Maybe you are right, but do I have to do this to work with rev? One step that is not shown in the shell script is editing the XML file build/NPSFacCalc/FacilityCalculator.app/Info.plist. It can be edited with a text editor or with the Apple Property List Editor (in dev tools). Thats the point... I think that potential is very underestimated here... MM developer dont want to become Hardcore Coder. And I think its not a good idea to treat them as poor programmers... I disagree that a closing screen is a "proven bad idea." It seemed to serve Macromedia pretty well for over half a decade. The communism seemed to serve Russia pretty well for over half century. Sometimes anything looks well, because there is no alternative... Now there are a lot of alternatives and nearly every day is coming another one, esp. from the point of view if MM development, which should still be the main focus - imho. Because its more difficult to struggle in the hardcore scripting market against M$´s .net or Sun Java. In the MM market is easier to get this 5% of the this MM market, because there is not such a domination like M$ or SUN. I did a job like this in my "former" life. I pushed olivetti PC´s maketshare from "not registered" to the second place behind IBM with 12% marketshare in the eighties here in Austria. I think I know a bit what I m talkin about... Hi Dan, On Friday, Jul 18, 2003, at 08:30 Europe/Vienna, Dan Shafer wrote: I'm just raising my hand here in support of Chipp's note about the splash screen. My company had a similar experience; we'd actually done some of the early demos for Director under contract to Macromedia and were building a decent business as Director developers. But our clients indicated they didn't want *their* customers (or competitors) to know what tool(s) they used and they insisted that we either circumvent the Director splash screen or switch tools. We switched tools. I am absolutely all in favor of RR getting as much exposure and publicity for the tool as possible because we all ultimately benefit from that. But this splash screen is a proven bad idea which I really hope RR reconsiders. Thanks for that point and also for the book you are working on. I have seen it on revjournal and was very, very IMPRESSED! Thats "the book" what we -NON-Hardcore scripter- are waiting for since years..! regards Wolfgang M. Re: RTFText, HTMLText, and Formatted Content in RR
On Friday, Jul 18, 2003, at 03:25 Europe/Vienna, Dan Shafer wrote: RTFText supports a tiny subset of the RTF file format. The docs list the formatting controls in RTF that are supported by RR. Out of something like 1300 control words in the RTF spec, RR supports approximately 30. The support is so thin that even a fairly simple book chapter -- which includes things like bulleted lists, code samples, and four-level headings, renders quite poorly and unusably. I have the same rtf problem since the beginning. Write and format in one tool and transfer all that without loosing the formating to other tools. Thats very important for writing or working with a lot of text, translations and so on. I have struggled a lot for the rtf feature in rev... Now we have it at least!!! I know its not perfect, but again we have it...;) The biggest problem is -as always- M$. But there is ( I dont know) no other way to deal with formated text between OSes. What I do is: I write in Mellel OSX only). It does good rtf import also, but I have not imported Word rtf files until now. I write in it I select the text copy it to the clipboard set the rev textfield to rtf and paste it to the rev textfield. That works fine. Yes you have to do a bit of fine tuning with tabulators, but not the whole slave formatting job again and again. Nearly 95% of the formatting is correct here... (Dont know what happens if the text is very big, I paste only small parts to the rev textfields up to 3 pages) Maybe there is a way for XML I dont know how this works... The future could be pdf import..? Hope that helps regards Wolfgang M. Bereuter Learn easy with trainingsmaps© INTERNETTRAINER Wolfgang M.
