Writing in the first person, informal style for a reference manual

his insistence that hand-lettered text (almost calligraphy) was

So I would definitely recommend "Illustrating C".

This is true. Many hobbyists become pros, and many pros like to help

noise to signal ratio... at some point, very generalized lists such as
this one offer little to the pros other than the rewarding opportunity

helping out the new folks, but when the work has to get done, and
there is an advanced question to be asked... well, you don't do it
there. It would get lost among the 18th "how do I put something into a

since I know the list - from the beginning - a splitting in different
lists never worked...

Many professional programmers will be put off from Revolution if the

Richard,
you are in the third year promising that;))
Sometimes in life everybody could/has/should think not only in time and
money. I know thats very hard to understand for you americans, but
there is a bit more in life than time and money...

I know you are one of the best scripter here and you did a great tool
with MC, what needs much more than scripting...

Whats abgout finding 15 minutes a day and wasting them to show us (me
Dummy) how that unfulfilled promise can be realized anytime. If it
takes monthes half a year or more... it doesnt matter. Better we have
it in a year then never. I would like to participate with at least 15
minutes (not scripting of course;)), and I m sure here are more nice
guys and gals, which are also ready to waste that 15 minutes.

One more thought: Think not only iShell. Think about the other great
GUI idea too: the mTropolis or Apple´s new Motion. Ist the same thing:
drag prescripted icons to the controls and give them life. Let them do
whats written inside the icaons in transcript. (they should be
doubleclickable to open the editor to adapt them for the more advanced
Users). Any control could be dragged like that. Check MistralMovie
http://www.omegaconcept.fr/index.php?oc=54 for minutes and you will
know what I mean. It lacks the possiblitiy of scripting, what its
bigger brother Qucikmedia has, but has a more modern GUI, hence it
gives a good impression how that mTropolis GUI could look today.

We could abuse the rev dox list and form a small group, and make a
list how this can be realized and everybody selects a different job.
Maybe we can anytime get a small fee for that. But we can surely do a
lot for the educational/newbie market.

eZedia MX - QT-Tool player very easy
Qarbon great succes with Flash format (unfortunaltly now WIN only)
MistralMove (the smaller brothers of QuickMedia) - the mTropolis idea,

QuickMedia Mac and Win MistralMove with scripting
X-Builder Mac only - a lot for 20 Bucks!
AgentSheets a simulation idea - intersting!
- -
Hyperstudio as we know it

more powerfull ones:
Norpath Elements Studio - The Authorware-idea with SQL connection,
deploy for OSX, Win, Linux and Solaris
iShell (you know) QT at steroids a bit slow - the Outliner GUI!
Magik its called now(?): Java Studio Creator (bought from Sun)
visviva - some like that Win-thing

Re: Documentation & Books+sorry!+conlcusion (?OT)

2004-07-11 Thread Wolfgang M . Bereuter
a clear and crisp Imagin(ation) in my head what an array
is. (An Image says more...) After understanding the content of an
example you can remember and you can start with try and error and maybe
with some good examples, finally to reproduce your own first array.
And there was a great addition from Mark?? how you can write it in
another way: (Like Monday, wendsday, friday seperated by commas). That
explained itself without any words whats the difference in scripting.
That gives everbody a faster and better understanding. Slowly I got a
first overview. Hence I decidied to make my examples based on this
sophisticated programming element (Array). (Maybee I did not understand
all in a few minutes, but much more than in years of reading about it
here on the list). If I can recover the latest files of my HD I will
put them online later.

The reason why most of good programmers cant write good instructions,
or good scientists are so often bad teachers is that they can not go
into the mind of a learner and understand that the learner knows
nothing about the theme he knows so much...

Let me finally say some words to the dox: Jeanny did a great job making
the best of a kind of catastrophic Ur-documentation. But imho she has
got a kind of Tantalus job with that. Dan, as I have looked once at
examples of his book, did a real great job to make a better
documentation. And I think (IMHO) he could maybe solve this
Interface/documentation problem.

There have been a lot of others great postings. Especially one, which
asked the principal question: Does rev need another documentation or
another UI?
I htink both;)

thanks again for you interest

Marian, i agree with a lot you have said before. But..
IMHO the big point why these discussion, arises again and again since
years on the list, like the good old Nessie. (maybe I should better
give up talking about this left/right brain - concerns here in the
scripters world, but anyway, i give it another try;)

And, one more suggestion: to accommodate the real newbie programmers,
Forget the "newbie" "programmers". Get the newbies to programming.
Sounds equal, but isnt, why?
If you are a "newbie (rev) programmer" then you are a programmer, which
is mostly coming from another "programming" tool. That means a left
brain-talented person, which is interested in programming and has
learned to think like programmers: digital step by step, word by word,
tone by tone details etc...) . For him its very easy to understand the
structure of a script, because it s language-like: word by word /
variable by variable word by variable, etc... He loves to think in that
way. Hence he will likely go page by page through a left brain
tutorial, Documentation etc, because he understands whats written in
these documentation.

The other one: newbie to prorgramming. Can be a left talented person
but mostly will not be, because he is not interested in programming.
until this first contact with a programming tool. Therefore most of
them are rightbrain talented person. They like association, Colors,
emotions, creativity. But they hate step by step-things. The do not
think like a programmer, they have a lot of problems understand whats
written in the docs. They need a kind of visual instruction.
Judy!
They need, first of all an OVERVIEW of all this incomprehensible
written details. They are looking for fast capture of the content -
with one view. The most important thing for a right brainer is to know
the content BEFORE he starts learning. Therefore they need an Index, to
get this overview. If they dont get it and must learn from the
documentation, they will be frustrated immediately. But we all have
learned very early in our childhood: Avoid frustrations! If they cant
avoid it or escape of all that frustrations, they will learn to hate
rev. (As I have learned, hence I know what I m talking about), Because
I m NOT a natural leftbrained programmer.

If you are interested in getting the big potential of creativity of the
right brainers, they are about 50% of the mankind, but I belive less
than 5% of the programmers, then you have to give them a
brainfriendly(!) documentation. to have them as satisfied members on
board. BTW most of them are not(!) already captured, like 90% of the
leftbrainer, by Visual-(anything) and anyhting.NET.

Apple got this brainfreindly thing with first Mac OS 6.x, and than with
HC. An some HC Dokumentation have been instinctivly written
brainfriendly too. That was the great succes of HC in the market of
(more rightbrain) Mac Users but newbies to programming. An great
brainfriendly authoring tool, not from Apple, was mtropolis.

If you have a lot of doubts about this brain matters, which are not
from me, thats common knowledge in the brain science, maybee you
believe more in the University of Cambridge:

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in

Amzanig huh?

this works in nearly all languages (aslo acuh in desucth) and gives you
an idea how our brain is woking and why a fast overview, indices and
keywords are so important for the understanding, and understanding for
applying.

Because of another project i have not much time at the moment, but if a
lot of people are realy interested how my idea of a brainfriendly
documentation could look like, I can do a small simple example.
my 2 cents

their students grasp the information they are trying to get across,
they must structure and present their lesson in ways that will trigger
all three types of learning.
or call it the left/right brain-way...

Verbal learners will love the rev documentation. They learn best by
verbal communication. They pick things up by reading or listening. The
documentation for this type of learner is fabulous.
Kinesthetic learners understand things by taking them apart, putting
them back together, practicing with the parts. Getting in there and
swinging the hammer, pounding a few nails, hands on kind of thing;
that
is how they learn best. With rev, they will learn the most as they
play
with the cook book, open up the scripts, seeing how they work,
modifying them to see what happens. The rev documentation is OK here,
not great, but it has been improving in this area.
Exactly thats the point I was talking about on this list since it has
started. Finally I gave up. Thanks that you Dave came up and explained
it much better than i could. But, how du you think you (we) can get
this in to the head of verbal, left brain, digital and sequential
working heads of a programmer?

The visual learner needs pictures to "see" how things operate. They
learn best by looking at screen shots of what is being talked about,
looking at a picture of the icon being discussed, by watching the
computer move the mouse on the screen to select the proper menu item,
by having a little man pop onto the screen and show him what to do,
etc. This type of presentation is essential to a visual learner and is
almost non existent in the rev documentation.

Don't get me wrong, I think that the amount of information in the docs
is superb. I also know that adding the visual aspect to the documents
will add to their size, but it will open up RR to a vastly larger
audience. It will also, I believe, inspire many more people as to what
can be done with RR.
Revolution has the tools to have a great learning environment for the
"Visual" and "Kinesthetic" learner.

3-4 seconds the 2.1 needs about 10 seconds. Thats a big difference.
One of my selling arguments ist. Starts very fast like in was in 2.0
and 1.1.1 and 1.0 to... But 10 seconds are nto so fast(!).
Any idea what this can be..?

Every tool has bugs, the question is how many and how long they exist.
But the number of bugs in rev, which makes it useless for me is
endless...
(For example now: the property profiles does work in the ide, but does
NOT work when you build an app. I have set all textfields to another
profile than Master. But all text fields in the build are empty.
Rev 2.1 build a standalone which opens the rev ide. Impossible to
change that.
The 2.1 build produces an error of the windows engine...
etc...) (OSX 10.2.6 G4 >1 Giga Ram)

But I need that functions. I have bought a rev license because of the
features it has, in the description at least. But this new bug makes it
AGAIN impossible to deliver my program!!!

Somethimes I really ask myself: Wolfgang, are you an idiot? Why have
you bought another licenses when you are waiting and waiting since such
a long time for a usable tool and you dont get it..?

I have wasted a lot of time during the last 2 years reporting bugs - Im
tired of that. These bugs are serious not cosmetic. I have bought 2 rev
licenses in the last years to deliver a program to my costumers, but
was able to do that until today). I want a (bugless/bugfree as
possible)-programm which does what the description promises, and I want
it soon now. But I dont want to learn and struggle with bugzilla,
because it is very complicated...!

So I think you, or anybody of the rev team, who is more trained on
bugzilla, should still watch this list, like before, and transfer the
bug reports and bug descriptions from here to bugzilla.

my 2 cents

it. On the bright side, I see the bug has been assigned and it is
under review.
Thanks Jaquelin, you are completly right. It must be fixed urgently.

IMnHO
Why this is not a real workaround Geoff...
1) I have hundreds of fields, which must move on click with effect. A
work around in this way is impossible or would be worse than a chinese
torture. So I had to find another work around in the past. As I said
the bug is very old and I have reportet it before bugzilla about 5 or 6
times. And I remmber others, which have reported it too... Why it is
not in bugzilla...?

I would be really interested why this was not fixed in the last 1,5
years..?
My workaround was: change all (bigger) text-controls to the size that
you dont need scrolling... (for some of them it was not possible,
because the text content are to big, so the ugly lines are still
there...) Not an elegant english style,:)

A similar problem was that with the double-arrow buttons. I could not
move/change any controls with the nudge buttons. Pls RR team imagine
that once.!? Not moving a single control, a group of controls, no
change in size of a single control, etc...
Now I know, thanks to Barry, that the reason is Cocktails double-arrow
buttons. But I had this Cocktail Effekt *only* in rev. So I thought
thats a rev problem...

Therefore finally I think:
1) anybody from RR should still read the list to see what problems are
discussed here and actualize/check the db.
RR should also listen a bit more to these non scripters (like me). Not
all of them are idiots, and they have to pay the same money like the
others...

Is that what a beginner really needs...?
As mentioned Mark in the first post. But a true beginner imho is not a
person with some years experience of Basic, xtalk, Direktor, Javascript
or even html...
A true beginner is a real true beginner in scripting...

Imho an example how to program a PIM is not the right thing. Why..?

Some reasons:
1) We still have a great example of scripting the first tool and you
cant do it better: http://www.hyperactivesw.com/mctutorial/index.html
The only small cosmetic it needs for a real beginner(home) stack is
get out the comparison to HC.
2) At the same time thats a perfect start for old HC scripter...
But, is that included in the rev packet...?

The problem is: All this instruction I have seen are starting with the
*second* or maybe the third step called: Hello world
A true beginner, needs another thing than scripting hello world.
He needs...
*An overview about the whole tool
* A good explication about the stack/card metapher, *before* he goes in
tho the details and start to write the first line of script: Hello
world.
*A real introduction which shoes him what rev could do in the future
for him, if he is willing to learn/(struggle)...
*A kind of "try and error"-stack with out the standard scripting error
warnings...
A module library with prefabricated scripts to solve problem *at the
beginning* he will learn to solve later
Ant that should not be integrated in the tool itself. That helps
nothing. If a beginner opens the tool he wants to do anything, not to
search in the Index, cookbook etc. which are to big for beginners.
That comes later on..

Let me say that with the words of Antoine de Saint Exuperys little
prince:
Wenn du Leute suchst um ein Boot zu bauen, dann sprich nicht über die
Arbeit, sondern erzähle ihnen von der Weite und der Freiheit des
Meeres... (Maybe Klaus or Malte can translate it better).

If you nee people to build a ship, then dont talk about the kind of
work wich must be done, tell them about the freedom and wideness of the
see...

To build this packet, is a job, which cant be done by experienced
*programmers* neither a technical persons. I think I have seen here
only a few persons which could do that: Dan Shafer or Jacqueline and
some friends of mine from
the german revboard, because they are persons which are able to think
with the head of a beginner...

That idea of the "true beginner" is nearly as old as the list itself,
based allways on hello world. Nearly everybody can reproduce "hello
world" with the cook book. But reproducing with a cookbook and
producing another ting without i, are 2 very different things. Hence a
real beginner could be very fast lost in scripting/error-space and will
have his first big frustration. If he cant or is not willing to pass
that frustration, he is lost for rev... And believe me, I know what
kind of frustrations rev can build in a "non-scripters brain"...

Such a kind of packet is revs missing link to start for true beginners,
and thats what the good old b/w HC is still ahead.

However, I still think that everyone distributing software for OS X
needs to learn about application bundles on OS X.
I think thats a missunderstandig now...
rev did the build correct the standalone(engine) and the others stacks
in the data folder:
* correct in OS9
* correct in WIN
* correct in Linux
* wrong in OSX
(I thin Linux is not so far way from bsd Unix, but its more far away
from OS 9 or WIN and both are build correct; please correct me if I m
wrong...)

and rev 2.0 did this build correct in OSX too...
that is what you can see on the other screenshot...
So this has imho nothing to do with packaging and distribution process
in OSX, which will start after that.
Its a bug in the new (updated) distribution builder. An all the other
features of the distribution builder like icons did work in older
releases. Why does all that no work in the "fixed distribution builder"?

I agree that's what it looks like. Wolfgang- I build apps on OS X and

it since Rev 1.1.1.
FOA thank for your help...
But, imho that cant be the problem, because its builded fine for the

Do I really have to go deep into OSX/unix to build a distribution with

Does this help me to save the problem with the coyright and the icons

But the most important point is, that it worked fine, like expected,
with rev 2.0...
http://www.internettrainer.com/9files/revolution/OSX_2.0.png

I humbly suggest: the problem may be that you haven't learned enough
about app bundles on OS X. I recommend for everyone building on OS X
to learn the layout of application bundles on OS X. It is in your
control using just the Finder and a text editor! Therefore it should
not prevent you from building OS X apps and distributing them in an
application bundle that meets your exact requirements.
Maybe you are right, but do I have to do this to work with rev?
I m very, very patient... but once, after years of waiting I would like
to have a tool which does one of his main features, without forcing me
to graduate in Unix...;)

Here is a shell script I use to create my custom app bundle after the
RR IDE finishes it's build. Note that everything in the script could
be done with the Finder by hand instead. One step that is not shown
in the shell script is editing the XML file
build/NPSFacCalc/FacilityCalculator.app/Info.plist. It can be edited
with a text editor or with the Apple Property List Editor (in dev
tools). The Info.plist is what contains the get-info and version
information for the app.

Hope this helps --Alex
Thanks a lot for that, i m not familiar with that, but I ll have a look
at it.

Finally why I have bought rev and not MC some years ago... - the easier
UI it was... - was it that..?

dont select content before pasting, that does not work here...

one tool and transfer all that without loosing the formating to other
tools. Thats very important for writing or working with a lot of text,
translations and so on. I have struggled a lot for the rtf feature in
rev...
Now we have it at least!!!
I know its not perfect, but again we have it...;)
The biggest problem is -as always- M$. But there is ( I dont know) no
other way to deal with formated text between OSes.
What I do is: I write in Mellel OSX only). It does good rtf import
also, but I have not imported Word rtf files until now. I write in it
I select the text copy it to the clipboard
set the rev textfield to rtf and paste it to the rev textfield.
That works fine. Yes you have to do a bit of fine tuning with
tabulators, but not the whole slave formatting job again and again.
Nearly 95% of the formatting is correct here... (Dont know what happens
if the text is very big, I paste only small parts to the rev textfields
up to 3 pages)
Maybe there is a way for XML I dont know how this works...
The future could be pdf import..?

Hope that helps

Are you suggesting the splash screen include the something like, "This
unprofessional-looking splash screen is not present in applications
made
with the Studio or Enterprise versions of Revlution"? ;)
Ahhh Hyperstudio..?

You are expecting to much from the average costumer (client). He does
not see the difference of Express odr Studio. He does, if he does,
realize made+revolution - Not more...

I ofter fin myself not looking closer to a utility which offer a system
near features if I see made on RB, maybe thats not fair, but it is ...
Therefore thats a big danger for the whole product. You get a bad
reputation very fast, but its difficult and expensive to loose it
again...
