The whole situation is all rather odd:

Prior to RunRev changing the name of their product to Livecode quite
a range of earlier versions of Runtime Revolution were available for
download; presumably as a service to people whose backups have gone screwy;
and a very nice and friendly service it was too - in keeping with the very
nice and friendly image RunRev projected in general.

As soon as Runtime Revolution changed to Livecode all those
downloads vanished: this reminds me of all those popular revolutions
that, like Chronos, ate their own children once power had been
established. It might not be a bad idea to remember what subsequently
happened to Chronos and Robespierre.

As I am a natural conservative sort of fellow (i.e. I conserve all sorts of
odds and ends in case I may need them later) I have burnt all the
variants of
RevStudio 4 as well as quite a few earlier recensions, onto CDs,
external hard drives

and so on - so I can be a revolutionary backslider should I choose.

Yours, Sanson, Richmond.

Re: DOWNLOADING REV 4.0.0

2010-11-16 Thread Peter Haworth
I love how unconnected discussions come together! I just downloaded
stackrunner and it seems to solve all my issues regarding standalone
startup banners/using test files versus live files. I point it to my
application .rev file and it runs it as if it were a standalone,
opening the live application database instead of the test one, but
with no banner of any sort. The only downside is that the OSX menubar
item for the aplication says StackRunner instead of my application's
name.

So while I'm a happy camper, this seems to completely circumvent
Revoution's plan to strongly discourage commercial distribution of
LiveCode Personal applications via the startup banner or am I missing
something?

Frankly, distributing a stack with a stackrunner as a commercial package
doesn't look that good;
especially as anybody who can get their paws (sweaty or otherwise) on a

I much prefer to store data in some sort of text file, even at the risk
of it becoming orphaned.

Naughty types can build themselves a version of Metacard and see what
happens when they
build standalones with that; although experience has taught me that it
is almost more trouble

than it is worth.

I am sticking with RR 4.0 until I can actually make some money with my
Devawriter so that I can
buy something with a bit more oomph than the $99 version; or RunRev
have changed their

marketing model as they seem to on an annual basis.

Despite the Kind regards [semantically empty if ever it was] it should
be clear by now that
RunRev are more interested in the whales and the sharks than bottom
feeders and crustaceans
like myself. The claims to 'care' about the small men and women who use
RR/LC on an everyday
basis do sound increasingly hollow; the removal of RevMedia meant much
much more than all the
subsequent protestations. Now if RunRev see their target as the
biggies why don't they just say
so? rather than saying one thing that is rather different from what
their marketing model says.

It is this thing that annoys me.

You *can* of course password protect your stack, and on OS X you can put the
stack inside the StackRunner bundle. And of course you can change the name
of the StackRunner app and even modify its info.plist file on OS X to
customize it even more - the only thing you can't do is eliminate the Get
Info information since that's embedded in the resources of the executable.

Well, I've downloaded LC 4.5.1 and it builds the application. I've only checked
the Mac version at this time, but there are definitely some things that don't
work in the standalone as they do in the IDE mode. Cause for a lot of head
scratching. Incidentally, for those who have less than perfect vision, the LC
installer is almost impossible to read. Very Dark colors and small text;
probably not white. I'd still like to know why the build with 4.0 hasn't
worked.

The errors you got indicated that some of the files required for the
build weren't in their default locations, so the standalone builder
couldn't find them. The most likely reason is that either the support
folders or the app were moved from where they were first installed.
Re-installing would fix that, which is what you did when you installed
4.5.1.
