Re: Do you Ubuntu?

2007-03-21 Thread Peter Alcibiades
The problem with running on MacIntels in Parallels is, that virtualisation on
Macs cannot be the future Linux market for Rev. The market has to be,
assuming it exists, people running Linux on off-the-shelf PCs.

So I would get a cheap base unit and a kvm, and put a few distros on in
multiboot mode - Suse, Fedora, Debian proper, Ubuntu, a Slackware derivative
like Zenwalk or Slackware itself. I agree with Richmond in finding Puppy
very impressive, but wonder how many people are really using it in anger.

My own experience is, there are significant differences running Rev on
Mandriva 32 and on Debian. Not all the fonts work properly on Debian. And
on Debian, both 32 bit on a laptop and 64 bit on desktop, though not on
Mandriva, I get periodic extreme slowdowns in both the script editor and the
dictionary. Haven't been able to track down why.

Virtualization isn't so much a market-shifter as a convenience for those
who need to run multiple operating systems, such as us Rev developers,
Web developers, and folks stuck in old-world offices that have
standardized on a particular OS.

The market for virtualization will always be relatively small, since
we're looking at a fairly small subset of users who need to run multiple
OSes frequently enough that such convenience matters.

So of course if Linux is to gain marketshare it'll have to do so by
focusing on physical installations. But since those who benefit most
from virtualization are developers who port between platforms, it
benefits the Linux community to assist Parallels in accomplishing this
smoothly. Happy developers means more apps, and more apps mean happy
end-users.

The true problem with running Linux in Parallels seems like merely a
small technical glitch that can likely be fixed soon after it gets the
attention of the engineers at Parallels Inc.

Since the input issue seems related to Rev, there may be something the
folks at RunRev might do to help that along.

Anyone know if the input has been posted to BZ?

I was going to do so, but frankly since I installed the latest release
of Parallels I'm no longer seeing that issue, only the one in which the
VM won't shut down fully.

If one of you have a reliable recipe for the input issue I'll gladly
vote for it.

Tried Ubuntu without being impressed. But it depends what you are looking
for - Ubuntu gives you the end user commercial OS experience - take it out of
the box and they have given you wnat they know is good for you.

Since that is exactly what I can't stand about OSX and XP, I prefer to roll

Hi Lynn,

Ubuntu is probably one of the best Debian distributions avalaibles
for the rest of us ! I used Suse 5 to 10 for years but Ubuntu is yet
my favorite Linux platform.

I had to setup a Rev client (Windows+MacOSX) able to connect OSX/
Linux/Solaris+Apache+PHP+Rev app server+Oracle 9i/10g server
solutions some months ago. Ubuntu 6.10 + Rev 2.2.1 were used
successfully to provide the linux way of the build.

As long as Rev is not needed as a front-end app on the Linux x86,
Solaris x86 or Solaris SPARC (Rev 2.1.2 only available for SPARC)
platforms, all works, with some workarounds, as expected...

Perhaps would it be helpfull to have the Linux and Solaris rev
engines updated to recent Rev issues...

Re: Do you Ubuntu?

2007-03-20 Thread Bob Warren

These are my choices, and the reasons for them:

1. Ubuntu (Gnome), because of its importance and popularity, and also
because of its social aspirations.

2. Linspire or Freespire (KDE), because of its impurity regarding
free/open software (i.e. its moderate acceptance of commercialization),
its CNR installation system, and its recent partnership with Ubuntu in
this respect.

3. Puppy, because of its competence and above all its portability.

I used to be pretty huge on Debian-based Linspire as the best Linux
flavor
for complete technophobes/newbies. Then I learned that Linspire just
partnered with Ubuntu to share technologies. The Linspire operating

will transition to using Ubuntu as their baseline. Linspire will do
their

 Ubuntu is clearly the flavor-of-the-month.

I have tried Ubuntu, but prefer Fedora Core 6. I use Revolution on FC6 all
the time. I have tried Linspire waaay back, and was put off by the
subscription fee for accessing the CNR service. Now that CNR will be free
for ALL MAJOR DISTROS (not just Linspire and Ubuntu), I will most likely
use it on my Fedora box.

I choose Fedora over Ubuntu because you get more useful software
immediately. I also prefer RPMs for installing software. What I dislike is
that Fedora (Red Hat) has stripped out everything media related so they
cannot be held responsible for any misuse of DRM protected media files.

 snip from http://www.cnr.com
Utilizing 5 years of CNR development in one-click software delivery,
CNR.com will provide a standardized process for finding, evaluating,
installing, and updating desktop software for the most popular Linux
distributions, both Debian and RPM based.

Ubuntu is really flaky on the latest version of Parallels. Sorry but it's

trying to get naked Ubuntu working on build 3188 of Parallels.

Ask them why they don't have a drop-down option for Ubuntu when setting up a

I have the shutdown problem too, it hangs at will halt now and that's
that. Then I just have to manually hit the Stop button. Otherwise it
works semi-okay except after launching Rev or MC. The stacks actually
run fine for a while, but the whole system becomes unresponsive soon
after. The mouse moves, but no mouse or keyboard input is accepted.

Instructions I found on the web say to install on Parallels using Other
2.6 Kernel so that's what I did. I also had problems with installation
and had to build a couple of packages manually after rebooting.

I wish I had not updated to Parallels 3188 -- the older version was rock
solid. I have had my WinXP image crash Parallels repeatedly too (even if
I never launch Rev.) I sent them a handful of logs yesterday.

Yup, you're exactly right. Hopefully they'll mop up the spill in aisle 3188
quickly. I have a feeling that most Rev users who venture into Linux will be

Linux flavor for complete technophobes/newbies. Then I
learned that Linspire just partnered with Ubuntu to share
technologies. The Linspire operating system will transition
to using Ubuntu as their baseline. Linspire will do their
 Click-And-Run thing for Ubuntu.

 Ubuntu is clearly the flavor-of-the-month.

Hmmm, sounds like I should give Linspire a call again :-)

Hello all,

Im wearing my Paradigma hat here (hey, if you can to RevCon 2005 you could
have had one too!) but I also have my Runtime kilt handy.

It seems that, in the span of the last two years, Ubuntu has come out of
nowhere to achieve an unprecidented popularity. Paradigma is finalizing
V4REV Linux and well, Linux you know is something on the minds of folks at
Runtime too.

Of you running on Linux, how many are using Rev with Ubuntu? Knowing the
level of interest in Ubuntu usage would be helpful for both companies.

I'm on Ubuntu, laptop and bigbox, Gnome. Every time the system gets up
on its hind legs and runs out to update various software components, all
on its own, I get goosebumps.

As far as I can remember it has number one on the distrowatch.com list
for a few years now :)

Out of the dozen or so distros I've installed over the years.. Xubuntu
is my favourite and have had no problems.

Got a new rack unit to setup so I am keen to play around with RHEL 5 (or
the centos version when ported) and investigate some of the new features
they're touting.

Lynn-

I've got a Kubuntu box at home and we're changing our red hat machines
at work over to Kubuntu as well.
