Its not Rev's fault that Linux has small market share. No, of course not.
But Richard, you cannot seriously be arguing that it is either sensible or
acceptable to release poor quality software as long as the target markets
are small? As to its being the same half dozen people. Well, maybe. How
many people on the list are exclusively using Rev on Linux?

It would appear that Rev just isn't working for you on your system. I
don't know why, so I can't rule out that it may indeed be because of
some conspiracy or laziness or stupidity or whatever at RunRev Ltd.

Some of the issues you've experienced have been reproduced by others
here; other issues not; others are well known in the Linux world as
having various expressions in different apps beyond Rev.

But very few of these you've written about have been logged to the RQCC.

And with many of your threads I've taken considerable time explaining
the business drivers behind the pros and cons of the Rev Linux engine,
repeatedly both here and in our private emails, only to have you ask me
"Why?" again in the next thread you start.

Going forward the archives will have to suffice; having done by best
several times to answer your question and failed to provide an answer
you find satisfying, I have to recognize that I have nothing to offer
that will be of value to you.

If Rev is working for you, you are free to use it.

If Rev is not working for you, you remain as free as ever to use
anything else.

If I can be of help resolving any specific issue I'm happy to lend what
I can to the process.

In the meantime, I sincerely wish you the best of luck finding a tool
that suits your needs. Feel free to drop me a note if you find a
particularly interesting one; I'm always willing to learn about good
options.

Wishing you peace and success -

Re: RunRev and Linux,> Peter Alcibiades palc

2010-04-12 Thread Peter Alcibiades

I shall wait for 4.5 and hope that these issues are fixed in it. Meanwhile,
I'll learn either PyQT or RealBasic in parallel, because I have to have a
Plan B. And either one is going to provide the intellectual exercise that
was one motive for getting into Rev. I'll use Rev as little as possible
meanwhile, with Geany as an external editor. I'll rewrite my reporting
stuff in awk and pass it to a spreadsheet or word processor for printing.
I've downloaded the dictionary in html, so at least it can be open in
readable and somewhat searchable form on another desktop.

And, as Richmond suggests, go for long walks in the hills. Where I live
this translates to go for long rows on the lakes and rivers of this watery
landscape, but whatever. Its an alternative method of keeping blood flowing
in the brain, and a valuable antidote to intellectual frustration!

Thanks to you all for listening, and thanks to you in particular, Richard,
for your patient replies.

Quite . . . it would be rather nice if:

1. We could have some sort of idea when 4.5 is due.

2. What specifically Linux things will be changed and/or
 improved in 4.5.

I must say, I wonder why the RunRev folk are keeping whatever is going
to be in 4.5 so close to their collective chest . . . it doesn't exactly
help us

with any sort of forward planning.

Apple start swanking about "the next best thing" fairly early on, as
do Microsoft (the fact that, on the whole, in both cases, nothing quite
lives

up to one's expectations is another story); while Linux distros (better not
use the "U" word) leak alpha, betas, release candidates and so on rather
like my kitchen tap.

Hey; anybody want to start a website called "RevRumors" ? :

http://www.macrumors.com/

http://www.macbidouille.com/

and have fun getting threatening letters, legal injunctions and so forth
. . . :)

---

Meanwhile, Peter, I wish you all the best in your physical exercise.

I find I do my most creative programming when I am quite a 'safe distance'
from a computer, and preferably, out in the fresh air. Either that or
tucked up in bed and off on that mysterious "astral plain" where all
computer programming problems seem to be resolved with little or
no fuss . . . :)
