I have been following hoping to hear more about getting mahout back to a
usable state. Perhaps we are following incorrect instructions but we have
tried multiple times over a bunch of different students to get mahout to
run and we get nothing but errors.

Students have been using spark now since we can't get mahout working but
there are some cases we want to use hadoop but not write map reduce code.
Can you point me in the right direction?

Sorry to email directly but I didn't think this was appropriate for the
whole group.

Short Mahout update

2023-06-27 Thread Andrew Musselman
Letting the lists know we have had a couple slow months on the project with
some family things going on. We are cancelling this month's community call
but will be picking it up later in the summer.

For now, hope everyone is doing well and we will look forward to
speaking again soon!

Best
Andrew

[UPDATE] Mahout - February 2023

2023-02-07 Thread Andrew Musselman
Devs and Users:

Here is a quick update for the community about where we are as a project
and a bit about some upcoming plans. Please reach out if you are interested
in helping to shape up plans and do some work.

There is a community call scheduled for the last Wednesday of every month;
hope you can join us. Here is a link to the meeting:
https://tinyurl.com/3ezp5jbu

*Project Activity:*
The project has been slow due to personal commitments for some time, while
continuing to debate direction. We are renewing recruiting efforts and
committing to some core improvements and additions, such as supporting
Python
in the math DSL instead of continuing with Scala.

We are moving back to a monthly community meeting to include new
contributors
as well as to establish momentum around concrete plans. Short-term
improvements include documentation and website fixes, along with outlines
for
plans. Mid-term (six months) target will be to have a plan in place for a
Python DSL along with other features such as new data sources and indexers.
Long-term (nine months plus) could include new back-end compute platforms
such
as Apache Ray.

Best
Andrew

Project Idea - Blockchain

2022-01-05 Thread Andrew Musselman
After some chats with Trevor about project direction we wanted to bring
some ideas back to the lists.

I have professional interest in blockchain tech, including how to query
ledgers and submit new entries, how to index the actual blockchain files
for search. Specific interests are in tracking contents of smart contracts (
https://ethereum.org/en/developers/docs/smart-contracts/) and their
execution, doing analytics on public transactions, etc.

Proposal is to provide a new data source, namely any number of
ethereum-compatible ledgers, and pick a few compelling use cases to build
out this year. Examples could be:
(1) Search-indexes of given ledgers
(2) Computed similarity to other accounts on the same ledger based on
activity history
(3) Time-series analysis of gas (transaction) fees across multiple ledgers

If this sounds interesting or if anyone has things to add please let me
know.

Happy New Year!

Best
Andrew

[ANNOUNCE] Apache Mahout 14.1 Release

2020-10-08 Thread Andrew Musselman
The Apache Mahout PMC is pleased to announce the release of Mahout 14.1.
Mahout's goal is to create an environment for quickly creating
machine-learning applications that scale and run on the highest-performance
parallel computation engines available. Mahout comprises an interactive
environment and library that support generalized scalable linear algebra
and include many modern machine-learning algorithms. This release ships
some major changes from 0.14.0, most in support of refactoring the build
system.

To get started with Apache Mahout 14.1, download the release artifacts and
signatures from https://downloads.apache.org/mahout/14.1/.

Many thanks to the contributors and committers who were part of this
release.

RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS

The theme of the 14.1 release is a major refactor for simplicity of usage
and maintenance. Pom structure and components have moved, so please ask on
the mailing lists for help if anything is not where you expect it.

STATS

A total of 17 separate JIRA issues are addressed in this release [1].

GETTING STARTED

Download the release artifacts and signatures at
https://mahout.apache.org/general/downloads.html. The examples directory
contains several working examples of the core functionality available in
Mahout. These can be run via scripts in the examples/bin directory. Most
examples do not need a Hadoop cluster in order to run.

FUTURE PLANS

14.2

As the project moves towards a 14.2 release, we are working on the
following:

* Further Native Integration for increased speedups

* JCuda backing for In-core Matrices and CUDA solvers

* Enumeration across multiple GPUs per JVM instance on a given instance

* GPU/OpenMP Acceleration for linear solvers

* Runtime probing and optimization of available hardware for caching of
correct/most optimal solver

* Python bindings for DSL

CONTRIBUTING

If you are interested in contributing, please see our How to Contribute [2]
page or contact us via email at d...@mahout.apache.org.

CREDITS

As with every release, we wish to thank all of the users and contributors
to Mahout. Please see the JIRA Release Notes [1] for individual credits.
Big thanks to Chris Dutz for his effort on the refactoring and cleanup in
this release.

KNOWN ISSUES:

* The classify-wikipedia.sh example has an outdated link to the data files.
A workaround is to change the download section of the script to: `curl
https://dumps.wikimedia.org/enwiki/latest/enwiki-latest-pages-articles10.xml-p002336425p003046511.bz2
-o ${WORK_DIR}/wikixml/enwiki-latest-pages-articles.xml.bz2`

* Currently GPU acceleration for supported operations is limited to a
single JVM instance

* Occasional segfault with certain GPU models and computations

* On older GPUs some tests fail when building ViennaCL due to card
limitations

* Currently automatic probing of a system’s hardware happens at each
supported operation, adding some overhead

* Currently the example in the main README errors out due to a packaging
error; we will be fixing this in the next point release

Re: How to do logical subsetting in Mathout

2020-07-07 Thread Andrew Musselman
Kuno, thanks for your note. I don't know of an equivalent function out of
the box, but if you want to get the indices where a condition is true you
could try something in Scala like:

myList.zipWithIndex.collect { case (item, index) if item > 1 => index }

Hope this is helpful.

I'm seeing a couple potential bugs, definitely at least a typo in
`bin/mahout` where there was some commented out nested ifs; when I comment
out the dangling fi on line 257 I still see some problems. Am I missing a

Re: How to convert a unique text value to a unique long value for a large data set

2019-04-18 Thread Andrew Musselman
Ramu, sorry for the belated response but if you're still interested you may
want to try the new version of item similarity, which is described some in
this article:
https://mahout.apache.org/users/recommender/intro-cooccurrence-spark.html

Re: PFPGrowth fList maximum available capacity

2019-04-18 Thread Andrew Musselman
Hi Kyoung, I took a look at that package; I've never used it but there is
an example which uses it:

$ pwd
/home/akm/src/mahout/community/mahout-mr/mr-examples/src/main/java/org/apache/mahout/fpm/pfpgrowth
$ ls
dataset DeliciousTagsExample.java

You may want to try that and see if the input data looks anything like what
you're planning to use it for in terms of list sizes, otherwise you could
try running it and seeing what happens.

Please let us know if you run into issues. It would be great to move that
package off map-reduce and into the newer framework; if you wanted to take
a look at that I'm sure we could give you some pointers along the way.

Code Freeze for 0.14.1 Release

2019-03-29 Thread Andrew Musselman
Hi all, we are going to be cutting a point release as soon as possible to
do some clean-up and release jars so we get them in the Maven repos.

If you have anything you need to get in before the release please let us
know; otherwise please hold off on any non-release-related commits.

Thanks!

[ANNOUNCE] Apache Mahout 0.14.0 Release

2019-03-06 Thread Andrew Musselman
The Apache Mahout PMC is pleased to announce the release of Mahout 0.14.0.
Mahout's goal is to create an environment for quickly creating
machine-learning applications that scale and run on the highest-performance
parallel computation engines available. Mahout comprises an interactive
environment and library that support generalized scalable linear algebra
and include many modern machine-learning algorithms. This release ships
some major changes from 0.13.0, most in support of simplicity and tidiness.

To get started with Apache Mahout 0.14.0, download the release artifacts
and signatures from http://www.apache.org/dist/mahout/0.14.0.

Many thanks to the contributors and committers who were part of this
release.

RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS

The theme of the 0.14.0 release is a major refactor for simplicity of usage
and maintenance. Non-core items have been moved to the new “community”
module, and a new “experimental” area has been created for cutting-edge
work that may require user tuning for specific hardware configurations.

STATS

A total of 15 separate JIRA issues are addressed in this release [1].

GETTING STARTED

Download the release artifacts and signatures at
https://mahout.apache.org/general/downloads.html. The examples directory
contains several working examples of the core functionality available in
Mahout. These can be run via scripts in the examples/bin directory. Most
examples do not need a Hadoop cluster in order to run.

FUTURE PLANS

0.14.1

As the project moves towards a 0.14.1 release, we are working on the
following:

* Further Native Integration for increased speedups

* JCuda backing for In-core Matrices and CUDA solvers

* Enumeration across multiple GPUs per JVM instance on a given instance

* GPU/OpenMP Acceleration for linear solvers

* Further integration with other libraries such as MLLib and SparkML

* Incorporate more statistical operations

* Runtime probing and optimization of available hardware for caching of
correct/most optimal solver

CONTRIBUTING

If you are interested in contributing, please see our How to Contribute [2]
page or contact us via email at d...@mahout.apache.org.

CREDITS

As with every release, we wish to thank all of the users and contributors
to Mahout. Please see the JIRA Release Notes [1] for individual credits.
Big thanks to Trevor Grant for a large effort on the refactoring and
cleanup in this release.

KNOWN ISSUES:

* The classify-wikipedia.sh example has an outdated link to the data files.
A workaround is to change the download section of the script to: `curl
https://dumps.wikimedia.org/enwiki/latest/enwiki-latest-pages-articles10.xml-p002336425p003046511.bz2
-o ${WORK_DIR}/wikixml/enwiki-latest-pages-articles.xml.bz2`

* Currently GPU acceleration for supported operations is limited to a
single JVM instance

* Occasional segfault with certain GPU models and computations

* On older GPUs some tests fail when building ViennaCL due to card
limitations

* Currently automatic probing of a system’s hardware happens at each
supported operation, adding some overhead

* Currently the example in the main README errors out due to a packaging
error; we will be fixing this in the next point release

2018-09-13 Thread Andrew Musselman
All, have to move this to accomodate schedules; sorry about all the spam, I
don't know why there are so many notices going out but I'm going to delete
that calendar event to stop any more of them going out.

Will update in a couple weeks with details, see you then!

The last time we touched this script it was to deprecate it in 0.10; any
objection to removing it?

Re: Hangouts

2018-08-06 Thread Andrew Musselman
We've used Google Hangouts for audio/video/screenshare, works pretty
well.

Seems like the next couple weeks are booked for people, so August 24th
and September 1st would be the next candidates.

I'll put something on the calendar based on interest and put the link
in a mail here.

Subject: Travel Assistance applications open. Please inform your communities
To: travel-assista...@apache.org

Hello PMCs.

Please could you forward on the below email to your dev and user lists.

Thanks

Gav…

—
The Travel Assistance Committee (TAC) are pleased to announce that travel
assistance applications for ApacheCon NA 2018 are now open!

We will be supporting ApacheCon NA Montreal, Canada on 24th - 29th
September 2018

TAC exists to help those that would like to attend ApacheCon events, but
are unable to do so for financial reasons.
For more info on this years applications and qualifying criteria, please
visit the TAC website at < http://www.apache.org/travel/ <
http://www.apache.org/travel/> >. Applications are now open and will close
1st May.

Important: Applications close on May 1st, 2018. Applicants have until the
closing date above to submit their applications (which should contain as
much supporting material as required to efficiently and accurately process
their request), this will enable TAC to announce successful awards shortly
afterwards.

As usual, TAC expects to deal with a range of applications from a diverse
range of backgrounds. We therefore encourage (as always) anyone thinking
about sending in an application to do so ASAP.
We look forward to greeting many of you in Montreal

Kind Regards,
Gavin - (On behalf of the Travel Assistance Committee)

Re: Proposal for changing Mahout's Git branching rules

Okay develop it is; I'll cut a develop branch from master right now.

As we go, if people forget and push to master, we can merge those changes
into develop.

In addition, I'm making a 'website' branch for all work on the new version
of the site.

I've worked in shops where that was the standard flow, in hg or git, and it
worked great. I'm in favor of it especially as we add contributors and make
it easier for people to submit new work.

Have we had that many times when master got messed up? I don't recall more
than a few, but in any case the master/dev branch approach is solid.

Welcome New Committer Nikolay Sakharnykh

2017-04-21 Thread Andrew Musselman
The Apache Mahout PMC is pleased to announce that we have asked Nikolay
Sakharnykh to become a committer and he has accepted. His contribution of
an initial set of CUDA bindings into the project are good progress toward
our goal of simplifying matrix math at scale.

Being a committer allows you to contribute more easily to the project,
since in addition to posting pull requests and patches you're also granted
write access to the code repository; which in turn means you can review and
accept community contributions, and help others pitch in.

Nikolay, we're looking forward to working with you in the future; welcome!
It is customary for new committers to introduce themselves with a few words
:)

Best
Andrew

[ANNOUNCE] Apache Mahout 0.13.0 Release

2017-04-17 Thread Andrew Musselman
The Apache Mahout PMC is pleased to announce the release of Mahout 0.13.0.
Mahout's goal is to create an environment for quickly creating
machine-learning applications that scale and run on the highest-performance
parallel computation engines available. Mahout comprises an interactive
environment and library that support generalized scalable linear algebra
and include many modern machine-learning algorithms. This release ships
some major changes from 0.12.2 including computation on GPUs and a
simplified framework for building new algorithms.

To get started with Apache Mahout 0.13.0, download the release artifacts
and signatures from http://www.apache.org/dist/mahout/0.13.0/.

Many thanks to the contributors and committers who were part of this
release.

RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS

Mahout-Samsara has implementations for these generalized concepts:

* In-core matrices backed by ViennaCL [3] providing in some cases speedups
of an order of magnitude.
* A JavaCPP bridge to native/GPU operations in ViennaCL
* Distributed GPU Matrix-Matrix and Matrix-Vector multiplication on Spark
* Distributed OpenMP Matrix-Matrix and Matrix-Vector multiplication on Spark
* Sparse and dense matrix GPU-backed support.
* Fault tolerance by falling back to Mahout JVM counterpart of new solvers
in the case of failure on GPU or OpenMP
* A new scikit-learn-like framework for algorithms with the goal for
creating a consistent API for various machine-learning algorithms and an
orderly package structure for grouping regression, classification,
clustering, and pre-processing algorithms together
* New DRM wrappers in Spark Bindings making it more convenient to create
DRMs from MLLib RDDs and DataFrames
* MahoutConversions adds Scala-like compatibility to Vectors introducing
methods such as toArray() and toMap()

Mahout has historically focused on highly scalable algorithms, and since
moving on from MapReduce-based jobs, Mahout now includes some
Mahout-Samsara based implementations:

* Distributed and in-core Stochastic Singular Value Decomposition (SSVD)
* Distributed Principal Component Analysis (PCA)
* Distributed and in-core QR Reduction (QR)
* Distributed Alternating Least Squares (ALS)
* Collaborative Filtering: Item and Row Similarity based on cooccurrence
and supporting multimodal user actions
* Distributed Naive Bayes Training and Classification

STATS

A total of 62 separate JIRA issues are addressed in this release [1].

GETTING STARTED

Download the release artifacts and signatures at
https://mahout.apache.org/general/downloads.html. The examples directory
contains several working examples of the core functionality available in
Mahout. These can be run via scripts in the examples/bin directory. Most
examples do not need a Hadoop cluster in order to run.

FUTURE PLANS

0.13.1

As the project moves towards a 0.13.1 release, we are working on the
following:

* Further Native Integration for increased speedups
* JCuda backing for In-core Matrices and CUDA solvers
* Enumeration across multiple GPUs per JVM instance on a given instance
* GPU/OpenMP Acceleration for linear solvers
* Further integration with other libraries such as MLLib and SparkML
* Scala 2.11 Support
* Spark 2.x Support
* Incorporate more statistical operations
* Runtime probing and optimization of available hardware for caching of
correct/most optimal solver

Post-0.13.1

We already see the need for work in these areas:

* Support for native iterative solvers
* A more robust algorithm library
* Smarter probing and optimization of multiplications

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Many thanks to Karl Rupp of the ViennaCL [3] project for his help pushing
the bindings through with his many email exchanges; we greatly appreciate
his involvement. Many thanks as well to Samuel Audet of the JavaCPP [4]
project for his help with the team’s usage of JavaCPP to produce the JNI
layer to produce the native bindings for GPU and OpenMP, which was also key
to this major release.

CONTRIBUTING

If you are interested in contributing, please see our How to Contribute [2]
page or contact us via email at d...@mahout.apache.org.

CREDITS

As with every release, we wish to thank all of the users and contributors
to Mahout. Please see the and JIRA Release Notes [1] for individual
credits, as there are too many to list here.

KNOWN ISSUES:

* The classify-wikipedia.sh example has an outdated link to the data files.
A workaround is to change the download section of the script to: `curl
https://dumps.wikimedia.org/enwiki/latest/enwiki-latest-pages-articles10.xml-p002336425p003046511.bz2
-o ${WORK_DIR}/wikixml/enwiki-latest-pages-articles.xml.bz2`
* Currently GPU acceleration for supported operations is limited to a
single JVM instance
* Occasional segfault with certain GPU models and computations
* On older GPUs some tests fail when building ViennaCL due to card
limitations
* Currently automatic probing of a system’s hardware happens at each
supported operation, adding some overhead
