Re: Confused about upgrading Apache Struts

2018-04-19 Thread Alex Choi
Hi Sean,

Maybe I can help explain what you're about to undertake from a SysAdmin
prospective.

Upgrading or changing an application framework like Struts is similar to
upgrading or changing a Linus/Unix pplication package or dependancies. In
Windows, it would be similar to upgrading or changing DLLs.

In those cases, APIs, application structures, processing flows, and so-on
may have changed. If any of these items have changed, then the application
may need to change too.

A starting point is the reviewing the framework's documentation, change
logs, applications technical documentation and so-on. As Dave mention
before, if you need help with understanding these documents you should
consult with the application developers or your application vendor.

I hope this helps.

Alex

Re: admins, can you add something like [struts] before every subject

2012-01-13 Thread Alex Choi
Good point.

Also someone may accidentally post a Struts 1 question in a Struts 2 user
group or vice versa. Or one not being sure, may cross post message to both
(or all) Struts user groups. Yup, this could open "a can of worms".
There's no guarantee that everyone will post to the correct Struts user
group (this could happen to me as well :)).

I generally find after reading a post and people's related follow ups,
which which version of Struts is in question. I agree with the OP that it
is difficult to separate and/or filter messages by Struts version can be a
challenge but there's doesn't appear to be a simple solution.

This user group is great place any Struts users to seek help.

2012-01-13 Thread Alex Choi
I'm wondering if the Struts User community would be interested in have
separate mailing lists for Struts 1 and Struts 2 topics?

Re: How can I write a custom tag?

2011-12-30 Thread Alex Choi
Yes you can define a custom JSP tag by using Java Tag Library Definition
or TLD and your own Tag Handler Java code.

Here's a link to help you to get started,

http://java.sun.com/j2ee/tutorial/1_3-fcs/doc/JSPTags5.html

As rabbitwkx pointed out, there's lots of info available on the Internet to
help you.

Hope this helps.

Re: Newbie question

2008-03-18 Thread Alex Choi
A Java Web Application that uses Apache Struts 2 framework can be written or
developed using JDK version 1.5. It is possible to use JDK 1.4 but your
Java Software Developers must use the backward compatible Apache Struts 2
jars for JDK 1.4 for Struts 2 development

Here are the details you are interested:

Re: Newbie question

2008-03-18 Thread Alex Choi
I think you need to rephrase your question. Apache Struts 2 is a specific
Java Web Application framework technology and Java Web Application is the
more general and generic term I think you meant to say. In terms of Web
Hosting, you would be interested in Web Hosting Providers that allows
deployment of Java Web Applications.

I hope that helps you to narrow your search.

Re: Struts 2 IDE and Conspiration

2008-03-10 Thread Alex Choi
Yes,. WebWorks, Struts 2, and Struts 1 are community projects or open source
projects. JSF was developed by an expert group lead by Sun Microsystems
(under JSR-127) and available for anyone to use.

When you mention JSF it sounds to me that you are interested in better
understand how to render a page within a Struts 2 framework. This is where
Struts 2 has opened up the View portion of a MVC type application. You have
your choices of tag libraries and page rendering APIs. Struts 2 supports
JSP, Velocity, Freemarker frameworks, and any others that supports Struts
2. See, http://struts.apache.org/2.x/docs/tag-developers-guide.html.

JBoss has a Freemarker IDE component that plugins into Eclipse IDE 3.2 & 3.3.
Freemarker IDE is limited in features but it is a start. See,
http://labs.jboss.com/tools/download/index.html

I do agree that development tools for Struts 2 is limited at this point in
time. This can change and as more people become interested in Struts 2
development.

Re: Struts 2 IDE and Conspiration

2008-03-10 Thread Alex Choi
I have experience in developing web applications in Struts 1 and Struts 2.
IMHO, I think Struts 2 is an improved framework over Struts 1. Again, that
is just me.

You can take a look at the following available online resources to better
understand about Struts 2:

   - http://www.infoq.com/articles/converting-struts-2-part1
   - http://www.ebookee.com/Starting-Struts-2_113168.html
   - http://www.roseindia.net/struts/struts2/struts2login.shtml
   -
   http://www.oreillynet.com/onjava/blog/2006/10/my_history_of_struts_2.html

The above is a small sampling of online resources from issuing a Google
search and there is plenty more information around to help you make your own
judgment about Struts 2.

Re: When will Struts 2.1 be released?

2007-05-01 Thread Alex Choi

Struts 2 version 2.0.6 is the current latest GA version. The Struts Project
Management is using a Milestone Build system of numbering. This means GA or
public release may skip version number if a build doesn't make the grade
(acceptable Apache Struts Community Standards of quality). That build
version is skipped and a new version number is assigned as the next release.

Here's a link to give you more information about how the fine hard working
people at Apache Struts (and WebWorks) manages build version numbers:

http://struts.apache.org/kickstart.html#releases

I think I got this correct. But by all means, please correct me if I am off
base on this.

2.0.7 was released? Where do I get it? The apache.org site is showing
2.0.6 still.
