Re: [OT - Friday]Corporate Stupidity
Well, certainly a dishonest company in any case is a bad thing. If there is a law on the book, as there is in my sector, that requires certain things of them, then there's not much you can complain about as far as the company goes, but complain all you want to your government representatives of course. And if there's NOT a law on the books but it's not an unreasonable request, as is the case I think in some sensitive positions, then so be it. But if the company is going to flat-out lie about the need, that's obviously a cause for concern, forget what the request was in the first place! -- Frank W. I work for the state oil company in Brazil, which has the monopoly of all oil exploration and production. It´s the largest company in Brazil and one of the largest in Latin America. They check everybody upon hiring, but taking fingerprints is unthinkable. But in the US, where paranoia seems to be the rule, I can understand companies taking such measures. This might seem like an obvious comment, but this depends on what type of job it is. I work for one of the largest financial companies in the U.S. in the mutual fund sector. There are real, legitimate concerns with so much money involved. To me, asking for my fingerprints wasn't an outrageous request. I think I could have argued it was superfluous, but not unreasonable. I'm not saying every company is in this boat, indeed most probably are not. In most cases it probably is ridiculous to ask for such things. Jim, H! Now I remember, Clyde Barrow, Bonnie Parker, the Barrows Gang. On the one hand, I know that nominative possessives in English, such as "Barrows" in "Barrows Gang" do not take an apostrophe. So, that could be a singular "Barrows". On the other hand, people rarely know that rule and we could expect "Barrow's" in "Barrows Gang". So, are you in fact originator of the infamous BARROWS GANG? Probably when my CEO tried for week to get me to stay at the company instead of taking another opportunity. I spent about 2 hours a day for week in his office as he explained why I should stay, comparing the opportunities, my future, my pay, benefits, etc. After additional research and a lot of thinking, I decided to leave the company and take the other opportunity. Two weeks later, I learned that the CEO reduced everyone in the company to minimum wage because of financial problems!
