Well, certainly a dishonest company in any case is a bad thing. If there is a
law on the book, as there is in my sector, that requires certain things of
them, then there's not much you can complain about as far as the company goes,
but complain all you want to your government representatives of course. And if
there's NOT a law on the books but it's not an unreasonable request, as is the
case I think in some sensitive positions, then so be it. But if the company is
going to flat-out lie about the need, that's obviously a cause for concern,
forget what the request was in the first place!

In my case, I'm doing contract work for a federal (Canadian) government
department - nothing remotely sensitive, though there is a small amount of
confidential information, as there probably is in any IT position. I didn't
have nearly as much problem with the demand for my fingerprints as their
insistence that federal law requires them to keep my fingerprints on file
after they've served their purpose (which it doesn't).

I work for the state oil company in Brazil, which has the monopoly of
all oil exploration and production. It´s the largest company in Brazil
and one of the largest in Latin America.
They check everybody upon hiring, but taking fingerprints is unthinkable.
But in the US, where paranoia seems to be the rule, I can understand
companies taking such measures.

This might seem like an obvious comment, but this depends on what type
of job it is.

I work for one of the largest financial companies in the U.S. in the
mutual fund sector. There are real, legitimate concerns with so much
money involved. To me, asking for my fingerprints wasn't an outrageous
request. I think I could have argued it was superfluous, but not
unreasonable.

I'm not saying every company is in this boat, indeed most probably are
not. In most cases it probably is ridiculous to ask for such things.
In some cases though, like my company, a full background check doesn't
seem crazy to me.

Jim,

H! Now I remember, Clyde Barrow, Bonnie Parker, the Barrows Gang.
On the one hand, I know that nominative possessives in English, such
as "Barrows" in "Barrows Gang" do not take an apostrophe. So, that
could be a singular "Barrows". On the other hand, people rarely know
that rule and we could expect "Barrow's" in "Barrows Gang". So, are
you in fact originator of the infamous BARROWS GANG?

I'm just agonizing over it... my sides hurt I'm agonizing over it so much. I
have a very good contractor attitude towards this... any company stupid enough
to believe that a full blown background investigation (almost the exact same
thing I had to go through for my TS clearance way back when) has any bearing on
how good I am at my job, is entirely to stupid to work for. I'll most likely
take this oppurtunity to go work for someone else for more money.

No, if it was for a government contract (ie security clearance) then I wouldn't

Well... I could say that as well except that the VP HR apologized for putting
the team in a position to ask en masse to leave, and let us keep our laptops as
a goodbye present... so I guess it balanced out.

RE: [OT - Friday]Corporate Stupidity

2004-12-10 Thread Barnett, Brian W.
Probably when my CEO tried for week to get me to stay at the company instead
of taking another opportunity. I spent about 2 hours a day for week in his
office as he explained why I should stay, comparing the opportunities, my
future, my pay, benefits, etc.

After additional research and a lot of thinking, I decided to leave the
company and take the other opportunity. Two weeks later, I learned that the
CEO reduced everyone in the company to minimum wage because of financial
problems!

I was glad I made the right choice and sickened by the behavior of the CEO.

Just found out that the 800lb brass monkeys have decided that it's a good
idea to do full background and checks on all their employees.
Which has got to be the dumbest thing ever been done to me as a contractor
or employee...

so what's the stupidest thing a company has ever done to YOU?

Does the company want to do defense contracting? Bush was re-elected.
This will speed up, I think. The old shallow analysis of "Well, I am
innocent of everything and I don't mind it" answer will become the
word of the day soon, I predict.

There might be a business reason to do this.

Oooh, oooh (makes Horshack sound)

So the stupidest thing they did was what?
a) Make you WRITE that? (kidding)
b) Upgraded you with illiterate computer technicians like the ones who wrote
that paragraph?

The stupidest thing they ever did to me was, when I asked for more to do,
gave me NOTHING so I eventually left out of boredom! (And they soon lost
their funding anyway so bye-bye company in two meanings)
