Re: Unusual bare-metal scenario - practical?
Hi Dustin, I am far from an expert on all of the baremetal stuff but I'll try and take a first stab; and I've cced some folks who should be able to help provide better answers. Thanks! Apologies for the delay in replying - I was hoping to hear from Frank or others, and in the interim I was getting a simple CS instance set up using KVM, so I could be confident that the non-baremetal stuff was functional. I think the documents that you found are largely from a wiki migration - I've linked to some of the others below that are a bit more updated. https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Baremetal+KickStart https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Enhanced+Baremetal+support+on+Cisco+UCS https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Plug-ins%2C+Modules%2C+and+Extensions Thanks! It took me a lot of staring at the first link to realize that Use cases is not use cases at all, but a cleverly disguised set of steps to use baremetal support: create a network offering with network service: userdata, sercuritygroup, baremetalpxeservice selected, we assume using external DHCP service in this example. Using external DHCP appears not to work - when creating the pod later, I see Service Dhcp is not supported by the network offering [Network Offering [15-Guest-BareMetal]. Enabling this, with the bare-metal provider, helps. create a basic zone with aforementioned network offering. create a Pod. The guest ip range adding to Pod must be in the same subnet of host's IPMI ip. Reserved ip range for CloudStack service VM is never used. This requirement will be problematic. Is it necessary that it be in the same subnet, or just that it have IP connectivity to that subnet? configure hosts and write up information of IPMI ip, IPMI account/password, MAC address of nic which will broadcast DHCP request install a CentOS VM to the zone. Install CloudStack baremetal agent in it and run cloud-setup-baremetal, write up information printed out. for each switch in the zone enable DHCP forwarding to this CentOS VM. This zone doesn't support KVM, so I can't create a VM in it. Any idea what was intended here? add OS installed in step 5 to CloudStack by API addBaremetalPxeKickStartServer create a Cluster with hypervisor type BareMetal And I tried to jump ahead to this part, but the cluster I added is now wedged: just shows the spinner in the UI, and the settings tab says ERROR. So I'm a bit stuck right now. Can anyone help? Dustin
XEN vs. KVM
Dear colleagues, I'm using CloudStack with KVM for a year and a half, but, as I can see, some people would recommend to use XEN instead of KVM, because it's better. Would anybody be so kind as to explain why XEN is better than KVM? Thank you very much in advance! -- Best regards and wishes, Vladimir Melnik

RE: change of Public IP range
I was running a cloudstack bootcamp course last week and this very issue came up as we had to use a new CIDR for the Public traffic. Unfortunately the simple answer is that there is no official way of achieving this, but it can be achieved via some database 'manipulation' You first need to add the new Public IP Range, then locate the records for the System VMs and Virtual Routers and update them so they point at the new IPs and not the old ones, then restart all of them. Once the old Public IPs are no longer in use, you will be able to remove them from the UI. Thanks Nux, I am using over-provision, so I had to enable that feature in /boot/config--current-linux kernel. if I do rmmod virtio-balloon guest machines are able to see all RAM allocated to them but if I do modprobe virtio-balloon guest machines only see half of the RAM allocated. even if I turned over-provission off, guest machines only see half of RAM allocated to them. Yeah, over-provisioning in KVM is a bit tricky. In 4.3 we'll have the option not to have the VMs memory size messed with and can use KSM for memory de-duplication. -- Sent from the Delta quadrant using Borg technology! Nux! www.nux.ro
Re: CS 4.2 KVM - unable to give instances more than 3GB or RAM
Hi Motty, I just saw your other email, found this ( https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK-5968) this morning, might be worth upgrading CS to the latest master? (or 4.3 forward?) Not sure why I haven't been hit by these memory commit issues, I have several VMS with 20GB and 60GB RAM with no issues. Host: Ubuntu 12.04, various Guests. Below is my overprovisioning factor: mem.overprovisioning.factorUsed for memory overprovisioning calculation1.5 I feel there is some confusion in the mailing list about this issue. My understanding is that the overprovisioning factor effects the overall statistics of the host, therefore, if a host had 10GB of RAM and a mem.overprovisioning.factor of 1.5, CS could allocate upto 15GB of VM memory. Is this incorrect? I came to this conclusion by the normal terminology of 'over-provisioning' and the basis that CPU is done in that fashion 'Used for CPU overprovisioning calculation; available CPU will be (actualCpuCapacity * cpu.overprovisioning.factor)', also storage Used for storage overprovisioning calculation; available storage will be (actualStorageSize * storage.overprovisioning.factor). It seems odd the random spike of people complaining about this issue, I personally have never seen CS do this before, either in real life or on the mailing lists last year. RE: change of Public IP range
I had a similar situation deploying AD w/ DNS on our CloudStack build, having to create a new type of network that can assign public IPs, get the vnet auto linked to the public bridge, etc. Basically had to create a shared network, then alter the database record for the network, vlan, and nics. Then I had to edit the entire user_ip_address entries to change the reserved IP list so DHCP would provide IPs on the same subnet as the public network. Fun stuff! -Original Message- From: Geoff Higginbottom [mailto:geoff.higginbot...@shapeblue.com] Sent: Thursday, February 06, 2014 9:07 AM To: users@cloudstack.apache.org Subject: RE: change of Public IP range I was running a cloudstack bootcamp course last week and this very issue came up as we had to use a new CIDR for the Public traffic.
