RE: Cloudstack/Xenserver/GPU support

2014-06-17 Thread Devdeep Singh
Sanjay can correct me if I am wrong, but looks like a different resource gets
loaded for XenServer 6.2 and XenServer 6.2 SP1. So if you are using 6.2 ,
cloudstack will not query the host for GPU details.

Devdeep

RE: Cloudstack/Xenserver/GPU support

2014-06-17 Thread Vijay Ramadoss
The problem is that my host doesn’t show the gpu through cloudstack. Just using
Xenserver direct passthrough, everything works. Just doesn’t work through
cloudstack.

The last time I had a requirement to enable passthru of devices to the VMs,
CloudStack didnt have support for this. While the XenServer itself can do
passthru, CloudStack service offerings could not be taught to expose these to
the VMs created via CloudStack.

In short, someone will need to add this feature to ACS. The developer list
might be a better place to ask this question.

Rich,

I followed the Citrix KB article referenced here (
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Realhost+IP+changes)
with 4.2 and it worked fine for me using SSL. Just remember to get a wildcard
SSL cert, and be careful pasting it into the CloudStack UI.

Note that I am using 4.4 dev builds for this so it does have GPU support. So in
service offerings I do see GPU options but just doesn't work.

The last time I had a requirement to enable passthru of devices to the VMs,
CloudStack didnt have support for this. While the XenServer itself can
do passthru, CloudStack service offerings could not be taught to expose
these to the VMs created via CloudStack.

In short, someone will need to add this feature to ACS. The developer list
might be a better place to ask this question.

pxeboot CloudStack VM with external tftp server

2014-06-17 Thread Yiping Zhang
Hi, All:

I just figured out how to PXE boot a CS VM with external tftp server.

Here is my environment setup: we use Puppet + Foreman to manage our existing
physical nodes. Now we just added a CloudStack (4.3.0) instance running basic
network mode on the same network. So on this network, I now have two DHCP
servers, managed by Foreman and CloudStack respectively, and one TFTP server
managed by Foreman.

To make CS’s internal DHCP server to serve “next-server” option for pxeboot, I
added following line to /etc/dnsmasq.conf file on cloudstack virtual router,
and restarted dnsmasq service after modification:

  dhcp-boot=pxelinux.0,tftp.example.com,10.0.0.10

(use your own tftp server name and ip address accordingly)

Here are the steps to pxeboot a CS VM:

 1. Create an instance in CS. I used an empty template, but you should be
able to use any template you have. If the VM boots up with local disk
immediately, then just wipe out boot disk’s MBR block with dd cmd to render it
non bootable.
 2. Connect to instance’s console, you should see the VM is trying to pxeboot
and fail, write down VM's MAC address and IP address.
 3. In Foreman, create a new host using these MAC and IP addresses, generate
all templates required for pxeboot and kickstart for the new host.
 4. Go back to VM’s console, click on “Ctrl+Alt+Del” to reboot VM. This time,
the VM should be able to pxeboot successfully and start kickstart.

I am surprised that I just need to make a very simple one line modification to
make this to work. Hopefully, this feature can be incorporated into default CS
virtual router configurations.

Have a good day.

VM created in different hosts with CPVM can not access the internet

2014-06-17 Thread dimas yoga pratama
Hi all,

I build Cloudstack KVM hypervisor with 2 machines. One machine(A) act as an
Agent and MS and the other machine (B) act as an Agent only.

When I create VMs on same location with CPVM, the VM can access the
internet.
But when I create Vms on different host with CPVM, all the VM I created is
not accessible, I can use console view from MS but cannot access the
internet.

Is there any misconfiguration in my cloudstack?I'm using basic networking
and in a proxy environment.

Thanks, looking forward for your answer

Realhostip.com Migration

2014-06-17 Thread Richard Chatterton
Folks,

I was just reading through my backlog of messages and I see that the
Realhostip.com service has been extended to September 30th. Hurray!

I also see the following in the message where that was announced:

> While testing Realhostip fixes additional product issues were found which are

Is it strictly necessary to upgrade CloudStack to 4.4 before migrating away
from realhostip.com? Has anyone successfully migrated away from it on an older
version of CloudStack?

Floating IP for use between 2 VMs

2014-06-17 Thread Brent Clark
I have run into an issue that I need help in finding the proper solution.

CloudStack version 4.2.1, KVM

We have the need for 2 VMs to use the same IP. They wont be using it at the
same time. We have a tool that configures an IP on the interface of one VM
and when the other cannot detect it, it configures an interface on the
other for that same IP.

I tried assigning a secondary IP to the VMs and I was able to for one, but
the other wont let me because the other already has it assigned.

Is the secondary IP not the correct way to do what I am wanting? Is there a
better way or one that is supported?

Many Thanks!

RE: [ACS 4.3.1] bug fix release

2014-06-17 Thread Adrian Lewis
Hi Sebastien,

I'm afraid I wouldn't have a clue how to patch the source but
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK-6892 should be a very
easy one to fix from what I can gather and would solve a fairly critical
issue for anyone attempting to use the DB HA feature in 4.3.

Thanks for putting the energy behind a creating 4.3.1 release - I realise
it's all too easy for developers to just keep working on the latest and
greatest so I (and I'm sure many others who just install from packages)
appreciate the effort.

Re: Cloudstack 4.3 KVM cpu overcommit

2014-06-17 Thread Nux!
Hi,

CPU overcommit is a bit weird as the primary count that ACS does is on
"Megahertz" rather than on vCPU.
What I do in order to overcommit (and keep it simple) is just set the Mhz of
the CPU the same number as the CPU/core count of the offering, this way it will
take a very serious amount of instances to fill up a machine (ie the sum of all
Mhz allocated to exceed total Mhz of the host as reported by libvirt).

Cees,

Unfortunately I'm not personally aware of anyone using ScaleIO with XenServer,
but it is on the HCL for XenServer versions 6.1 and prior (
http://hcl.xensource.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductType=Storage&ProductName=ScaleIO%20vSAN).
The core CloudStack question would be how CloudStack sees this storage, and my
guess would be as local storage. If you enable local storage for CloudStack,
does it see ScaleIO as primary storage?

Xenserver 6.2 SP1 Hotfix 4

2014-06-17 Thread Len Bellemore
Hi Guys,

I've recently upgraded to XenServer 6.2 with CS 4.3.

I've also applied XenServer 6.2 SP1. Do I need to apply Hotfix 4 as well?

I read that it has some enhancements for CS built into the hotfix, but the
release notes also state that I need to set up a dedicated SR for High
Availability, which seems a bit odd.

Do I need the hotfix? If so, do I really need to set up a dedicated HA SR?

Cheers
Len

By experience, you need to stop/start VM to see them use the over provisioning

Cloudstack 4.3 KVM cpu overcommit

Hi there,

I can confirm that my KVM hypervisor is overcommiting CPU correctly,
but cloudstack seems unable to do so.

How does cloudstack calculates the usage per host ?

Hi Suneel,

I've had this where I restarted the management servers while the volumes or vms
were expunging.
Bear in mind that the volumes might still actually be expunging and can take a
bit of time to finally disappear.

If you're absolutely sure that the volumes are stuck in that state, you can
edit the database to force CS into thinking the volumes have been deleted.

First back up the cloud database:
 mysqldump -u root -p cloud >/tmp/cloud_dbdump.sql

Log into mysql:
mysql -u root -p

use the Cloud database:
use cloud;

Verify which volumes are in the incorrect state:
select id, name, instance_id, uuid, folder from volumes where removed is null
and state='Expunged'\G update volumes set removed=now() where id=
;

This will remove the volume from the UI, the sytem will believe that the volume
has been removed, but you must still manually remove the volume from the NFS
share if need be.

Re: ScaleIO experience?

2014-06-17 Thread Tim Mackey
Cees,

Unfortunately I'm not personally aware of anyone using ScaleIO with
XenServer, but it is on the HCL for XenServer versions 6.1 and prior (
http://hcl.xensource.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductType=Storage&ProductName=ScaleIO%20vSAN).
The core CloudStack question would be how CloudStack sees this storage,
and my guess would be as local storage. If you enable local storage for
CloudStack, does it see ScaleIO as primary storage?

You can set value for vm.allocation.algorithm ('random', 'firstfit',
'userdispersing', 'userconcentratedpod_random', 'userconcentratedpod_firstfit'
: Order in which hosts within a cluster will be considered for VM/volume
allocation) global parameter to firstfit . By default the value is random .

Hope this will help.

Subject: Possible to try and use one host first?

Hey guys,

In my 4.3 environment I’ve got 2 xen hosts online at the moment.
I kind of assumed that CloudStack would fill one up then move onto the other,
which it doesn’t.
I can see why it wouldn’t when I think about it, as it minimises contention and
makes it so that there is less data to ship between hosts in the event of one
failing etc.
However, I wondered if there is a way in which I can force the cloud to use one
host first until there is no capacity left on that host?

I ask because we run some specialist Citrix backup software on our hosts to
take a daily backup of our VMs and until they issue me another licence, I can
only back up one host.

The virtual appliance is for this backup software (PHD Virtual ‘PHDVBA’) runs
as an alien VM, as importing it into the cloudstack via VHD upload seems to
cause issues in the way it performs (ie it boots into it’s Ubuntu based OS, but
refuses to work).

Alternatively, In an ideal world, I would import the virtual appliance through
the CloudStack, have it back up one host then migrate to the other host and
back that up too. Would be a nifty little way of dodging the extra licence fees
too.
Has anyone had similar problems importing virtual appliances and overcome them?

Thanks guys!

John

Re: Cloudstack 4.3 KVM CPU overprovisioning

2014-06-17 Thread Ivan Rodriguez
I've found more information on the host I have 2 sockets

Processor Information
Socket Designation: CPU1
Type: Central Processor
Family: Xeon
Manufacturer: Intel

Processor Information
Socket Designation: CPU2
Type: Central Processor
Family: Xeon

According to /proc/cpuinfo I have 24 cpu's

processor : 23
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 44
model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5660 @ 2.80GHz

According to Cloudstack cpu count matches

*Total CPU24 x 2.79 GHz**CPU Allocated for VMs97%*

But

*"The Number of CPU Sockets1"*
On KVM counting vcpus and matching that one to the real CPU;s

#of VCPUS living in - Physical CPU Number
  4 - 0
  1 - 1
  2 - 2
  2 - 3
  1 - 4
  6 - 5
  2 - 6
  1 - 10
  6 - 12
  5 - 14
  1 - 17
  1 - 22

For example 4 vcpus are living in CPU 0 so overprovisioning is working,
now
why is it that cloudstack sees this host as 97 % full when I'm using only
*12 CPU's*
Where are the rest of my CPU's

Any help would be really appreciate it

Cheers

RE: Cloudstack 4.3 KVM CPU overprovisioning

2014-06-17 Thread Prashant Kumar Mishra
I am giving an example based on my understanding.

Data
--
Host= 2 cpu ,2.3GHZ
Total capacity =2*2.3 GHZ
Total allocated: Total capacity assign to vms

1-Without over provisioning you can have total cpu allocated not more than
total capacity .
2-With overprovisioning x you can have total allocated x*total capacity ,
3-From the Cloudstack point of view If you are able to use total capacity which
is more than physical, it is over provisioned.
4-From the kvm Point of view : I guess you are interested in Cloudstack point
of view so leaving it

Thanks
Prashant

More information from my previous post,

On this particular blade I only have 9 vm's running

Total CPU24 x 2.79 GHzCPU Utilized3.9%CPU Allocated for VMs 97%Memory
Total126.02
GBMemory Allocated53.50 GB Memory Used36.74 MBNetwork Read35.99 GBNetwork Write

[root@cs2-chas1-bl03 ~]# virsh list
 IdName State

 9 i-8-70-VM running

 19i-3-91-VM running
 28i-4-110-VM running
 29i-9-112-VM running
 30i-3-128-VM running

My service offering is

# of CPU Cores4CPU (in MHz)2.00 GHz
Where the number of CPU cores varies, I'm wondering if my service offering is
incorrect because on the # of cores in my understanding is the number of vcpu's
and the speed is lower than the real speed 2,000 Mhz

Any ideas will be really appreciate it
