[ANNOUNCE] Apache CloudStack LTS Security Releases 4.18.2.3 and 4.19.1.1
Apache CloudStack project announces the release of LTS security releases 4.18.2.3 and 4.19.1.1 that address CVE-2024-42062 and CVE-2024-4, both of severity rating 'critical', explained below. ## CVE-2024-42062: User Key Exposure to Domain Admins CloudStack account-users by default use username and password based authentication for API and UI access. Account-users can generate and register randomised API and secret keys and use them for the purpose of API-based automation and integrations. Due to access permission validation issue that affects Apache CloudStack versions 4.10.0 upto 4.19.1.0, domain admin accounts were found to be able to query all registered account-users API and secret keys in an environment including that of a root admin. An attacker who has domain admin access, can exploit this to gain root admin and other-account privileges and perform malicious operations that can result in compromise of resources integrity and confidentiality, data loss, denial of service and availability of CloudStack managed infrastructure. ## CVE-2024-4: Unauthorised Network List Access In Apache CloudStack 4.19.1.0, a regression in the network listing API allows unauthorised list access of network details for domain admin and normal user accounts. This vulnerability compromises tenant isolation, potentially leading to unauthorised access to network details, configurations and data. # Credits The CVEs are credited to the following reporters: ## CVE-2024-42062: Fabricio Duarte ## CVE-2024-4: Christian Gross of Netcloud AG Midhun Jose # Affected versions: ## CVE-2024-42062: Apache CloudStack 4.10.0 through 4.18.2.2 Apache CloudStack 4.19.0.0 through 4.19.1.0 ## CVE-2024-4: Apache CloudStack 4.19.1.0 # Resolution Users are recommended to upgrade to version 4.18.2.3, 4.19.1.3 or later, which addresses these issues. Additionally, users on a version older than 4.19.1.0 are advised to skip upgrading to 4.19.1.0. To maintain the security of their environment, users are advised to regenerate all existing user keys. # Downloads and Documentation The official source code for the 4.18.2.3 and 4.19.1.1 releases can be downloaded from the project downloads page: https://cloudstack.apache.org/downloads The 4.18.2.3 and 4.19.1.1 release notes can be found at: - https://docs.cloudstack.apache.org/en/4.18.2.3/releasenotes/about.html - https://docs.cloudstack.apache.org/en/4.19.1.1/releasenotes/about.html In addition to the official source code release, individual contributors have also made release packages available on the Apache CloudStack download page, and available at: - https://download.cloudstack.org/el/7/ - https://download.cloudstack.org/el/8/ - https://download.cloudstack.org/el/9/ - https://download.cloudstack.org/suse/15/ - https://download.cloudstack.org/ubuntu/dists/ - https://www.shapeblue.com/cloudstack-packages/

Re: VNC with tigervnc
Hi Reza, The console access for KVM VMs has been secured since CloudStack 4.18.0 and it is using the certificates provided by the CA Framework to secure the connections. This is configured automatically by CloudStack following the procedure described on the design document: https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Secure+KVM+VNC+connection+using+the+CA+framework I think the problem is that you are trying to use the incorrect VEncrypt type, you should use X509Vnc instead of TLSVnc. I’m not sure about the tigervnc parameters but you may also check for a way to provide a path for the certificates Regards, Nicolas Vazquez From: R A Date: Thursday, 18 July 2024 at 18:35 To: users@cloudstack.apache.org Subject: VNC with tigervnc Hello guys, i am trying to setup a vnc connection to the vms via a "normal" vncclient like tigervnc. vncviewer -SecurityTypes=VeNCrypt,TLSVnc 172.17.10.10:5903 When connecting I get this message: An unexpected error occurred when communicating with the server: Authentication failure: No valid VeNCrypt sub-type Does anyone has some advice how to get this working? Re: Urgent - Cannot manage shared IP addresses in advanced zone
Hi Fariborz, Sorry if misunderstanding but I think you may want to create a new Shared network on the Networks section (not entering through the Zone and Physical network), and define the IP range on the network creation. Once created you can navigate to Networks -> Shared network -> IP ranges (at least this is the behavior on latest versions, haven’t checked on 4.15) Regards, Nicolas Vazquez From: Fariborz Navidan Date: Thursday, 11 January 2024 at 15:11 To: users@cloudstack.apache.org Subject: Re: Urgent - Cannot manage shared IP addresses in advanced zone Hi. I have now successfully managed to add the new IP range using the old UI at Infrastructure -> Zone -> Physical Network -> Guest -> Network -> View IP ranges. However, in the new UI, there is nowhere to manage shared guest network IP ranges. I don't have public traffic type setup. All VMs are accessing the internet through guest network IPs which are routed to the bridge cloudbr0 which has public internet access. I've already checked Infrastructure -> Zone -> Physical Network -> Traffic Types -> Guest in the new UI. I'm using advanced zone with security groups enabled. Thanks. Re: Direct Download/Bypass Secondary Storage option for templates
Hi Will, Afaik the deleteTemplate API removes the template in CloudStack (database entries) but does not remove the template files on storage. My statement was a concern about replacing the template files which can be used as a base image when using thin deployment on VMs, which can affect the running VMs. About the template versions, I think currently the only way to achieve this is to register a new template for a newer version. About the prepareTemplate API, I don’t think that will achieve the goal but could require some testing Regards, Nicolas Vazquez From: Will Conrad Date: Tuesday, 20 June 2023 at 15:58 To: users@cloudstack.apache.org Subject: Re: Direct Download/Bypass Secondary Storage option for templates Can you elaborate on this statement? "but only if there aren’t VMs using the template as the backing file on that primary storage pool." The documentation here states that deleting a template does not affect any VMs using the template. https://cloudstack.apache.org/api/apidocs-4.18/apis/deleteTemplate.html Does cloudstack have a recommended best practice for managing templates/versions? Say, for instance, If we want to ensure we have the latest cloud image every two weeks for an ubuntu2204 template? Would manually deleting the cached file from primary storage and running the prepareTemplate API call on the template do what I seek?Would it be safe? prepareTemplate API documented here: https://cloudstack.apache.org/api/apidocs-4.18/apis/prepareTemplate.html On Tue, Jun 20, 2023 at 10:51 AM Nicolas Vazquez < nicolas.vazq...@shapeblue.com> wrote: > Hi Will, > > You can refer to the Github repository > https://github.com/apache/cloudstack and submit a PR for this, or can > also raise an issue and describe this functionality as a new > feature/improvement: https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/issues/new. > > The only problem I see with your approach is that only updating secondary > storage will not ensure that new dpeloyments will get the latest version, > since CloudStack keeps copies of the template on primary storage also. Hi Will, You can refer to the Github repository https://github.com/apache/cloudstack and submit a PR for this, or can also raise an issue and describe this functionality as a new feature/improvement: https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/issues/new. The only problem I see with your approach is that only updating secondary storage will not ensure that new dpeloyments will get the latest version, since CloudStack keeps copies of the template on primary storage also. New deployments use the cached templates on primary storage when it is available to avoid copying from secondary storage. I think that the feature should remove all the existing copies in primary storage also and replace them with the latest version, but only if there aren’t VMs using the template as the backing file on that primary storage pool. Re: Direct Download/Bypass Secondary Storage option for templates
Hi Will, When registering a template CloudStack usually downloads it first to secondary storage and then copies it through the different primary storage pools when a VM deployment requires it. The aim of the direct download feature is to skip the first step and directly downloading the templates into primary storage pools without any secondary storage intervention. In your requirement do you mean to change the template URL and re-download the template from a different location or simply download again the template from the same URL after updating the served file? Afaik there is no supported way to safely do this except manually updating the files on the downloaded storage pools (secondary and primary) which should be updated carefully. The tables template_store_ref and template_spool_ref indicate the downloaded copies on secondary and primary pools of each template. Regards, Nicolas Vazquez From: Will Conrad Date: Thursday, 15 June 2023 at 14:47 To: users@cloudstack.apache.org Subject: Re: Direct Download/Bypass Secondary Storage option for templates Nicolas, The reason we're considering using the directdownload feature is to simplify template maintenance/updates. I presume that's what it was designed for. We want to be able to, preferably through cloudstack functionality, update the template image file associated with a template. We planned on achieving this utilizing directdownload to decouple the image file from the registered template itself when it occurred to us that a "regrab" button in the template properties webui or an API call to tell secondary storage to redownload the source would very much simplify this process. This brings my questions to: How difficult would it be to implement something like that? Is there another way to update the imagefile associated with a template? I mean, could we manually overwrite the file on secondary storage? Would that break anything? What is Cloudstack's recommended best practice for managing template images? No problem, I think these docs do not clearly state the supported storage providers, I will fix that. On this blog entry we have mentioned them: https://www.shapeblue.com/cloudstack-feature-first-look-direct-download-agnostic-of-the-storage-provider/ Currently the direct download feature is supported on NFS, local storage and shared mount point, but not for Ceph. Thank you for your assistance. I have another question, now. Since we've been working with this we have been trying various methods of testing directdownload templates. Since we were having problems with HTTPS, we tested HTTP. We have run into a problem where the template fails to download if the guest is using ceph storage. When we change to creating the VM on "local" storage, the template download succeeds and the VM creates successfully. Are there any insights you can provide here? Re: [VOTE] CloudStack Project Blog Migration
+1 (binding) Regards, Nicolas Vazquez From: Rohit Yadav Date: Wednesday, 17 May 2023 at 05:58 To: dev Cc: users Subject: [VOTE] CloudStack Project Blog Migration All, The ASF-infra had announced a hard deadline [0][1] to decommission our project’s Roller based blog [3] on the 31st May 2023. For the blog migration, ASF-infra has exported CloudStack blog posts from the current Roller’s database-backed infra to markdown files. These were put together in cloudstack-www repository’s docusauras-staging branch [2] with Docusauras used as a static-site-generator and a GitHub Actions workflow to automate publishing a staging site for your testing and review [4]. The staging site that migrates both the website and blog isn’t completely ready to meet the hard deadline, so this vote is proposed for only migrating the blog before the deadline and continue efforts to migrate to a new website [2][4] when we're ready in the near future. The following is put for voting: 1. By the end of 31st May ’23, ASF-infra will decommission the project blog at https://blogs.apache.org/cloudstack and for now we proceed with only the blog migration before this deadline. 2. The old blog URL/pages from https://blogs.apache.org/cloudstack/<https://blogs.apache.org/cloudstack/%3cblog-permalink%3e> will be redirected to https://cloudstack.apache.org/blog/<https://cloudstack.apache.org/blog/%3cblog-permalink%3e>. This will be done by the ASF-infra. 3. The blog content is copied to the "content/blog" directory of the asf-site branch in the https://github.com/apache/cloudstack-www repository [6], published at https://cloudstack.apache.org/blog/. The vote will be open until we reach a lazy consensus. For sanity in tallying the vote, can PMC members please be sure to indicate "(binding)" with their vote? Hi Mosharaf, The volume path indicates the disk location on the storage pool with ID = store_id column. The volume uuid is simply an identifier for the volume. Depending on the hypervisor you are using, both columns may be initially set to the same value (for example on KVM) and it may be possible the path could be changed after a volume migration. While the path and ID for some virtual machines are the same, they are different for other VMs. Would you kindly assist me in understanding how they differ from one another? GSoC 2023
Hi all, Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2023 has already been announced and the timeline is available on this link: https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline. I would like to volunteer as the coordinator for our GSoC involvement this year if nobody objects. Starting from this week, organizations can start submitting applications for the program. To submit your idea please create a GitHub issue at the official ACS repository with label “gsoc23” (such as: https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+label%3Agsoc2023), we’ll later review and work with the ASF guys to make this list available for applications. You will also need to register as a mentor. To become a mentor you don’t need to be committer or PMC, just to have an idea and the will to support and guide a contributor developing it. Registering is also easy, please send an email to private@ and ask to be recognized as such. You can find the general information of the program on: https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/ The announcement for this year: https://opensource.googleblog.com/2022/11/get-ready-for-google-summer-of-code-2023.html There are no major changes from the last year’s program, the only difference is this year GSoC is accepting begginers on open source software development and students as contributors. Please directly add your project idea, and of course if you have questions I’ll be available to help. Regards, Nicolas Vazquez

All, In the past, we had moved away from JIRA and ReviewBoard to Github as it provided a single platform for both the user and the dev community to collaborate on issues/requests and code changes (pull requests). We later organically started using Github for release milestones/triaging, recently projects. For sub-projects such as cloudstack-cloudmonkey, cloudstack-terraform-provider etc we also use the wiki features. More recently we're not advised to move to Github actions from Travis CI by ASF infra. Off lately, several user-related discussions and questions that we would have expected on the users ML are finding ways in Github issues, which aren't issues per se but questions, and discussions. Should we explore, enable and try Github Discussions [1] for CloudStack repos? Among the issues is one that reports regression in the VPC feature - wherein for new VPCs or existing VPC, VPC VR patching fails when it isn't on the direct network as the management server. A fix for this particular issue would require a new systemvmtemplate which can be either built/shipped separately or re-bundled in the existing 4.17.1.0 packages but could require some systemvmtemplate upgrade process for existing users. I'm leaning towards doing a short 4.17.2.0 which is 4.17.1.0 plus tightly scoped critical/blocker fixes - https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/milestone/26 if there are no objections. Please share if you've any other critical/blockers issues to report, or if you've any advice. Thanks. Regards.

Thanks Daan, I’m +1 on postponing and getting these features and more contributions in. At the same time the noteworthy features that are in now are limited: What is in: - custom tarifs - Prometeus exporter enhancements - volume encryption - console access enhancements - custom DNS for guest networks pending: - ant-design upgrade #6369 - EMC networker B&R #6550 - clone virtual machine #5216 - keyboard shortcuts #5122 - vm deploy retry #6062 - tungsten fabric #4205 - intuitive global setting #5797 I want to therefore postpone the release till January, or at leaset till after CCC. I think a release will have much more value if we wait until some more of these are in. regards, [1] https://lists.apache.org/thread/vnkd4gv43l94dsn3sn8g57mg236nostc
Re: Recurring Snaps Failing
Hi, As a final test I would suggest increasing the value of the ‘wait’ configuration. Checking the logs, it does not ever reach the point in which the snapshot is copied to the snapshots directory on primary storage and it may be taking too long. Currently, the operation is being timeout after 3600 seconds (2 * wait value?), can you try increasing it? It would require restarting the management server after applying the new value. If this doesn’t help please create a new issue on Github Regards, Nicolas Vazquez From: Granwille Strauss Date: Tuesday, 18 October 2022 at 09:31 To: Wei ZHOU Cc: Nicolas Vazquez , users@cloudstack.apache.org Subject: Re: Recurring Snaps Failing Hi Guys Was there anything else I could do to get this fixed? [ADVISORY] Apache CloudStack Advisory on KVM Shared Mount Point issues on version 4.17.0.0
On 14th June 2022, a new issue affecting only KVM users using Shared Mount Point storage was reported [1]. This issue affects the creation and the usage of existing Shared Mount Point storage pools on Apache CloudStack 4.17.0.0. Apache CloudStack 4.17.0.0 added support for the StorPool storage based on Shared Mount Point. However, the current version of CloudStack doesn't allow multiple implementations of Shared Mount Point storage pool providers, causing the StorPool provider to override the default implementation. This affected the other storage pool providers for Shared Mount Point since CloudStack tries to add them as a StorPool storage pool. To mitigate the issue, a CloudStack administrator needs to do the following on version 4.17.0.0: - On each management server: stop the CloudStack management service, remove the Storpool plugin jar on /usr/share/cloudstack-management/lib/cloud-plugin-storage-volume-storpool-4.17.0.0.jar and restart the Cloudstack management service - On each KVM host: stop the CloudStack agent service, remove the StorPool plugin jar on /usr/share/cloudstack-agent/lib/cloud-plugin-storage-volume-storpool-4.17.0.0.jar and restart the CloudStack agent service Note: This workaround removes the StorPool plugin support. StorPool users should not apply the workaround to continue using their Storpool storage. This issue will be fixed in the upcoming CloudStack version 4.17.1.0. Thanks Wei for providing the patch. Re: VMware Template - To read from OVA or NOT
Thanks Mike, The ‘Read VM settings from OVA’ option was introduced on 4.15.0, and only on that version it was the default mode. Since 4.15.1 it was made optional, and the default mode remained the same as before 4.15.0. Regarding the root disk controller issue, we have added a fix on 4.16.1: https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/pull/5910 - would be good to verify if this solves the booting issue after setting the controller correctly Regards, Nicolas Vazquez From: Corey, Mike Date: Tuesday, 29 March 2022 at 08:52 To: users@cloudstack.apache.org Cc: Nicolas Vazquez Subject: RE: VMware Template - To read from OVA or NOT Thanks for the reply. Current ACS 4.16.0. Deploying template on 4.15.1 had similar results when "Read VM settings from OVA" was OFF - the OS would just spin at startup. Why I started using the Read OVA option. When the option is OFF - I manually select the controller (lsilogicsas) and nic (e1000). One thing I notice is that when the VM deploys, ACS adds 3 additional scsi controllers to the VM. I thought that could be the issue; however, I deleted the extra controllers from the VM and the OS still spins like something isn't loading right. Also, looking at the template settings, the rootdiskconntroller says lsisas1068 instead of what I selected "lsilogicsas" during template download. Like I said, I feel like I've chased this tail before which is why I ended up using the "read VM settings from OVA" setting. However, the developer of our front end web portal has me trying an image without the read OVA setting because they think it will fix an API mismatch they have. Was the "Read VM Settings from OVA" option always "default" in previous versions? In my notes, I have it was introduced in 4.15.1. I have some questions, which CloudStack version are you using? In this case it would seem like the combination of controllers is not supported for the template. Were you able to deploy from the same template on previous CloudStack versions setting the same controllers? Are the controllers correctly set on vCenter? The 'Read VM settings from OVA' honors the template configuration and controllers. When deploying a VM using this option, are the disk and NIC controllers the same as the ones you want to set when not enabling the option? As a quick test, can you create a test VM using the 'Read VM settings from OVA' option, stop it and change the controllers from vCenter - would the VM boot correctly? Regards, Nicolas Vazquez From: Corey, Mike Date: Thursday, 24 March 2022 at 13:54 To: users@cloudstack.apache.org Subject: VMware Template - To read from OVA or NOT Hi - I feel like I've asked this in the past; however, my developer colleague has me spinning my wheels trying to get his code to work against this VMware/ACS environment. I'm having trouble with deploying a VM instance using a VMware specific template when I DO NOT use the "Read VM Settings from OVA." When I don't use that setting I set the root disk controller as "lsilogicsas" and NIC to "e1000." The VM deploys however the OS never completely loads, just spins at Windows OS "Getting devices ready." Using the SAME image, with the Read OVA setting - the VM instance deploys and loads the OS without issue. Can someone from ShapeBlue or ACS verify that for VMWARE environments the "Read VM settings from OVA" IS or IS NOT required? If in theory, I should be able to deploy a VM from a template where "Read VM Settings from OVA" is OFF - what could be the issue (I assume its something identified in OVA that is not getting loaded/seen from basic ACS API). I have some questions, which CloudStack version are you using? In this case it would seem like the combination of controllers is not supported for the template. Were you able to deploy from the same template on previous CloudStack versions setting the same controllers? Are the controllers correctly set on vCenter? The ‘Read VM settings from OVA’ honors the template configuration and controllers. When deploying a VM using this option, are the disk and NIC controllers the same as the ones you want to set when not enabling the option? As a quick test, can you create a test VM using the ‘Read VM settings from OVA’ option, stop it and change the controllers from vCenter – would the VM boot correctly? Regards, Nicolas Vazquez From: Corey, Mike Date: Thursday, 24 March 2022 at 13:54 To: users@cloudstack.apache.org Subject: VMware Template - To read from OVA or NOT Hi – I feel like I’ve asked this in the past; however, my developer colleague has me spinning my wheels trying to get his code to work against this VMware/ACS environment. I’m having trouble with deploying a VM instance using a VMware specific template when I DO NOT use the “Read VM Settings from OVA.” When I don’t use that setting I set the root disk controller as “lsilogicsas” and NIC to “e1000.” The VM deploys however the OS never completely loads, just spins at Windows OS “Getting devices ready.” Using the SAME image, with the Read OVA setting – the VM instance deploys and loads the OS without issue. Can someone from ShapeBlue or ACS verify that for VMWARE environments the “Read VM settings from OVA” IS or IS NOT required? If in theory, I should be able to deploy a VM from a template where “Read VM Settings from OVA” is OFF – what could be the issue (I assume its something identified in OVA that is not getting loaded/seen from basic ACS API). I decided to share an idea here. It is great we have such a rapid development and new releases often with so much great features insight. I believe the world (inside and outside of our community) should learn more about them, when there is a release. On this point, I was wondering if we can structure a process around announcing new releases. It will be great if when we announce the release we also have the following things prepared: - Images for the social media announcements - PR article for the release - A more detailed article presenting why the new features and improvements are bringing value and talking more for use cases, customer benefits and added value I would be happy to take these at my side, but all they need some time for preparation. If you agree for the proposed process and bringing more noise around the release, is it possible to fix a release date, when we can also launch simultaneously the marketing initiatives? As all the marketing preparations will take around a week, what about doing a broader campaign on 8th of November?
