... but in context with PS - I don't think that printer defined format is being 
used. In Linux printing works like this (I think) cups (common unix printing 
system) gets the data, converts them to PS, sends them to the rip and then to 
the Printer Driver (more on 
http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/CUPS-printing.html#cups1).

I've searched around and found nothing. The only thing I found is to set a new 
Standard document where the printer Language is set to PS. But that effects 
only new document - not the old.

No it isn't. But as far as I know package cups-pdf does only give me a 
pdf-printer.

Printing from all other programs, for example from the preview, works fine. I 
could create a pdf document from LibreOffice and print it - two pages on a 
sheet - with preview!

Offtopic - anyway: I'm often trying different distros (just for fun and) to see 
how they develop. Every distro has it's own pros and cons. (I haven't found a 
perfect distro for me). I'm going to check ubuntu again (last time was a year 
ago). But ubuntu is somehow proprietary which I dislike. And since I set up 
some computers for friends I'm always looking for a distro with actual software 
and long and good support - which is opensuse (do you know another?)

No, I mean PDF. I think LibreOffice sends a PDF formated page to the printer 
driver. Maybe the page is malformed or the printer driver isn't working correct.

You can see the "printer language" if you open the print dialog, klick on the 
printer and then on properties you get a new window. Select the tab device and 
here you have the printer language PDF (don't know if the Words of the tab etc. 
are correct since I use a german version). Again: setting this to PostScript 
(Level of the Driver) resolves the problem - but that are too much clicks for a 
print job.

Hi

If not other thing run, try to do this:

1) With Calc Ooo-Base, use Browser and select one by one all the tables
from the Ooo-Base db file.

2) Save the file as .ods
3) Then, in Lo-Base, connect (Browser-spreedshet) from .ods (I think
you can recover the tables.

At least you can recover the tables but you have to do again forms,
etc.

Why not try to do it in Writer and then copy - paste to Impress, or
with a program to save an image of desktop you can select and paste as
an image on Impress.

[libreoffice-users] LO3.4.3 hangs on several occasions

LibreOffice 3.4.3 running on Arch Linux hangs for extended periods whenever
certain things are done. For example, with a blank new document, the
following actions result in a hangup:

- trying to open the font window
- moving between the tabs in the paragraph window
- opening settings and moving between sections
- trying to load an odt document which Abiword opens just fine

The hangup can last for minutes, but resolves eventually.

I have disabled Java in LibreOffice and I have deleted my user profile. No
help whatsoever.

When I open LibreOffice and right-click on a new document, then try to open
the dialogue window for changing fonts, LibreOffice hangs and strace gives
something like this:

before 3.4.3, but this problem is quite new nevertheless. I've been using
LibreOffice for months.

A common technique for testing data structures is to populate the data  
with "lorem ipsum" text.


See: www.lipsum.com.

You obtain the text, parse it and de-duplicate as necessary. Load it into  
your structures.


There are many advantages to this technique. In this case the db could be  
populated, fully functioning, and no personal data is interchanged.

information presumably expect that it will remain confidential: that is,

alright well i was trying to simplify my request because it is my habit to
make simple requests long-winded for the sake of being absolutely clear. In
this case perhaps I simplified too much.
To elaborate for clarity:

I have a number of Singstar discs (1) for Karaoke like game playing. They're
intercompatible. Each disc has about 30 songs and I can swap discs on the
fly without restarting. Plus I can download new songs for a few bucks and I
have a bunch of those. What would be useful for me is a list of all the
songs I have so if someone is coming over and we're going to play I can show
them a list of all the songs rather than relying on me having the game boxes
(which I don't always have.. that's like 9 boxes) or having to plug in each
disc in tern (30-40sec turnaround time). So my goal is the ability to print
out a list of all my songs. I prefer the flexibility of a database vs a
spreadsheet because there are instances where I'll only bring 4 discs and
want to be able to print out a list of those songs plus the songs I've
downloaded. My goal is a bit more elaborate on top of that but for now that
is the context in which I ask my question. When I said songs on a disc. I
mean Karaoke Songs on a play disc not music on CDs

There are existing programs that handle music libraries well.  Herer are 2 
OpenSource ones

I think Banshee is cross-platform but uses Mono (an OpenSource alternative for 
.Net).  I think Rhythmbox is not made for Windows and i'm not certain it would  
work on Mac either.

you will see the printer language option
I did not remember this either.

But I do wonder if PDF means something different here.

PDF (Portable Document Format) is not a printer language but a 
document file format.  Is it possible that you mean PCL, HP's Printer

Ahh, i am not sure.  Tbh i was hoping that there might be something immediately 
obvious and easy to fix or that it would stuggle to open and fixing that would 
fix the problem.  

LibreOffice 3.4.x branch tends to be better at opening docX than the 3.3.x 
branch but really the MS Office implementation of docX is sufficiently 
off-standards that other programs often have trouble with it.  

In MS Office you can usually save as Odt (the older 1.1 format) and that should 
open fine in LibreOffice.  The older Doc (without the X) format tends to be 
more widely compatible with more programs at the moment tho.  

Looking at 
http://www.mobisystems.com/android_office/
it seems that Android's Office can't handle Odt yet but that seems very 
unlikely.  I think try saving as an Odt in Word and then try opening on the 
Android.  

So, i think i would test the odt on Android but then stick to using Doc for the 
next few months.

Hi Rich,

Stefan means to select the area, copy it, go to another cell, choose
edit from the menu, click on paste special and inside the menu box it
opens unclick paste all, then unclick all the options below (text, date
and hour, formulae, comments, formats, objects) except for numbers,
which is the only option that should stay checked.

[libreoffice-users] Base: creating a dropdown field form

I'm trying to create a DB of songs on a disc

I took some screenshots (1)
I tried using the Getting Started PDF(2) but while that did help me in
creating dropdown menus. I haven't been able to populate it and in their
example it was populated with items from another table. I'm only working
with one table here. I also don't see any way to add new fields. If I wanted
to do that would I have to start over and create a new form?

Sorry, I just say the Device option tap showing PDF as the default.  I 
do not know what "PDF" means in this context, since my printers may have 
that as a printer language type, as far as I remember.  My HP Inkjet is 
not a postscript printer, but my Color Laser might be able to deal with 
that.  I did not see Postscript as an option for the Epson inkjet.  I 
sure did not read it having a PDF language option.  So something is not 
right.  Could PDF here mean "Printer Defined Format" for the language used?


Can the Postscript type "level from driver" be kept as the "default" 
option somehow?  Maybe the "Printer Administration" shown was a module 
of LO 3.4 [at least with Ubuntu]?  I believe that module of LO was 
designed to set up the printers to run properly with LO.

CUPS-PDF - no package for OpenSUSE?   I wondered what OpenSUSE uses as a 
replacement package, so I looked it up on the site.


On the opensuse.org site, 12.1 is in RC till November 16th.  I searched 
the packages and there are 3 rpm package files [depending on the 
computer] for cups-pdf-2.5.1-1.1


If I read the site correctly, 12.1 is the "opensuse/factory" development 
version since it still is in development till November 16th.  So the 
search for the cups pdf package in that and the other version come up 
with a .rpm file to download and install it.  So it should be in the 
OpenSUSE version of a repository.

I wonder why it was not part of the ISO that you downloaded to install 
OpenSUSE?


Actually I had trouble with OpenSUSE, the one time I tried using it.  I 
have an IBM server that originally had SUSE installed on it, so the icon 
tag showed.  But I bought it with the OS, and everything else, wiped off 
the 3 SCSI drives that 2002 era P-4 IBM server had.  So I downloaded 
OpenSUSE [3 or 4 years ago] and tried to install it, but it would not 
install.  So I ended using an old copy of Win2000/pro till I ended up 
putting Ubuntu on it 2 years ago.  So I never had any luck with 
OpenSUSE.  If they do not include, in their ISOs, something as simple as 
the PDF package that is part of the CUPS printer environment, I do not 
know what to think.  My Epson printer uses a driver that uses CUPS as 
its backend so I can print using Linux computers.


Do not get me wrong, OpenSUSE might be a great Linux OS, since 
businesses are what it tends to be what it is marketed towards, but I 
just had one bad experience and did not look back.  I use Ubuntu, and 
other people tell me to try "such-n-such" Linux distro since they think 
it is the best you can get.  We have one person on this board that is 
involved in developing the  Mandriva, which was Mandrake.  I was taught 
Linux using Mandrake 7.x, back 10 to 11 years ago [if I remember 
correctly, and I still have a CD of it].  That one is in the top 10 of 
the list of distros I came across on a distro watch site.  OpenSUSE is 
on that list as well.  Arch Linux is considered an advanced user distro 
while OpenSUSE is a "middle-of-the-road" one. Their terms, not mine.  
But we each have our favorite ones.  I have mine and you have yours.  
That it what it should be.

The Printer Language is set by LibreOffice. If you open the print dialog, klick 
on the printer and then on properties you get a new window. Select the tab 
device and here you have the printer language PDF (don't know if the Words of

Yes I have the newest Version installed. The most recent version is 3.11.10...


I have two HP printers.  Color Laserjet 2600n and PSC1410.  I needed these 
updated drivers to make the printers work the best for Ubuntu Linux.  When you 
run the file in the Terminal [instructions are given on the site], it should 
ask about which OS and printer you have, before you download the needed file.  
Then when you run the script, it will download everything that is needed and 
install the needed packages for you.

This may help, if you did not install the drivers.  I found that the drivers 
included with Ubuntu 10.04 was not as good as the most up-to-date ones from 
that site.

The system shows the OS for SUSE 11.3 and 11.4, and you will have to page down 
the printer list a long way to get to your print

  Yes, that changes the display, but not the cell contents. I need to change
the contents to the displayed value so I can delete the columns whose sum
(row-by-row) comprise the formula.

[libreoffice-users] How may I read the value of a cell into a macro variable?

This question has two parts: simple and more complex:

simple: I wish to read the value of the currently selected cell (in Calc,  
of course) into a variable in the macro language (Libre Basic).  Script  
example please. and thank you!


more complex: AFAIK the LibreHelp does not document the stuff like:

dispatcher.executeDispatch(document, ".uno:GoToCell", "", 0, args2())

I used to be pretty skilled at recording macros and then modifying them.  
Where do I go to find things related to "uno:GoToCell"?  Universal Network  
Objects?  Can't find the "starting point".

[libreoffice-users] DOCX file from Android Office Suite will not open

Hi,

I created a file with the Android app "Office Suite Pro" and I cannot
open it with Libre Writer.

It pops up a "filter" menu with types of files in randow order (can I
file a bug report or a fix request on that?) and none of them are
"Windows Office 2010 docx file".

FWIW, the first 10 bytes of the file are the same as other docx files
that LO is able to open.

Any ideas (other than asking on an Office Suite mailing list)?

  And what seems even more strange to me is that there is a special
button "text highlighting" in LO Writer, but there is no such button in

now it turns out they don't.

No problem. Opens OK. What do you want to know about the contents?

The root directory has a file ([Content_Types].xml) and three
subdirectories --[_rels], [docProps] and [word]

Ok, this is going to sound mad.  Can you create a copy of the file and rename 
the copy so that it's file-ending is .zip instead of .docx?  Does that open as 
a normal zip file?

Sometimes the contents help us see what is going wrong.  I use that sort of 
thing to see which particular picture or logo is causing a document to be 
excessively heavy.  

It wont work for the older doc format but does work for docX and odt.

Hi :)
I usually start dealing with this sort of thing by checking to see if the files 
would open when they are on my own machine, rather than over the network.  Can 
you copy one of the files to your machine and see if you can open the 'local' 
copy?

At worst it temporarily means you can at least use the networked file-share as 
just a back-up or storage device and then use a local copy for editing.  

Hopefully someone (such as Alex) might then be able to help you expand on that 
functionality.

[libreoffice-users] Combining Two Columns In-Place

  In an Excel spreadsheet saved in .ods format are column pairs representing
data that can be combined into a single column because rows have a value in
one column or the other, but never both.

  In Xess I was able to put the cursor in a cell (e.g., N2) and enter the 
formula
'+n2+o2' and have the sum of the two columns in N2. LO doesn't like this. It
told me to turn on iteration (error 522), but that just moved the error to
523.

  Can I do this in LO? Or, do I need to create a new column and populate
that before removing the original two columns?

Don't worry about such mistakes.  Just try to get it right next time.

We 'should' be more understanding of new people as most of us made mistakes 
when first using this style of thing.  Most forums and such have their own 
quirks even tho they try to be fairly consistent with each other.  

I think we try to just politely point out things that have gone wrong without 
really meaning it to be a criticism.  It doesn't always sound that way though!  
These lists have people from all around the world and from many different 
sub-cultures within the range of countries so misunderstandings are highly 
likely.  Of course some people are just plain rude and make the rest of us 
cringe so it's difficult to know a person's intention.  Some people just have 
"bad hair days" or over-react to an often-repeated problem in a "blame the 
user" way rather than trying to see how the system could be changed to make it 
easier for new people that may not have decades of experience with newsgroups.  
In some sub-cultures people are only polite to non-friends.  Someone has a 
signature something like "Only friends argue.  Other people just don't care." 
although the person with that signature is then just openly helpful and kind lol

I haven't yet got to the email that caused offence but if it was from Alex then 
i seriously doubt he intended to be anything less than helpful and kind.

In Windows the layout and tabs are all different for different machines.  To 
some extent Gnu&Linux drivers cover a wider range of machines and anyway the 
different ones make some effort to be consistent with each other.  In Windows 
each printer tries to look more modern and fancy than other printers and 
manufacturers supply their own dialogue boxes for the different machines.

The Printer Language is set by LibreOffice. If you open the print dialog, klick 
on the printer and then on properties you get a new window. Select the tab 
device and here you have the printer language PDF (don't know if the Words of 
the tab etc. are correct since I use a german version). Again: setting this to 
PostScript (Level of the Driver) resolves the problem - but that are too much 
clicks for a print job.

OK, so the problem seems to be narrowed down to that form.

A few further questions :
- does the form contain any image fields ?

- does the form contain any boolean fields ?

- is the form based on a joined query (multitable), a view, or just a
simple one table query ?

The form saved outside of the database shouldn't contain any personal
data other than that of the user that created it (and only then if you
have filled in those details in the corresponding LO Options screen). Of
course, it will contain references to the fields of the table(s) to
which it originally linked, which you may or may not want to reveal.

Strange, I'm on 11.10, not 11.04. I tried to open the file, both, on a
32 bit and 64 bit environment. In both cases libreoffice closes while
trying to open the file. The command line does not give any error,
either. My LO version is 3.4.3 .

Could this be a kind of regression?

Hi,

When trying to run LibreOffice 3.3 on a system that also has LibreOffice 
3.4 installed, I get a pop-up window saying:


LibreOffice 3.3 - Fatal Error

The application cannot be started.
A general error occurred while
accessing your central configuration.

I assume this is because LibreOffice 3.4 changed the configuration at some 
point that is incompatible for LibreOffice 3.3. I have multiple 
installations for testing purposes.


What is the advised solution for running in such a situation ?

 moved a copy of my DB to that machine to test it in LO. As I said
 it opens up and then just closes down when I select the Input Form.

You might get better answers on the devs lists or iirc or whatever they use.  

It was a good idea to ask the users list first of course and there are some 
people here quite a lot that might be able to help but for most of us that is 
way over our head so our best option is to signpost you to where you might 
get more help for the specific problem.  

Most questions of this type that reach this list are from Bsd users and they 
seem to get the best reply from normal support for their specific distro.  On a 
brief glance through i noticed a few Gnu&Linuxy looking packages mentioned so 
are you trying to compile for a Gnome-based Gnu&Linux distro or a Bsd?  It 
might help the devs if you say which distro when you ask them.  

Have you tried running a pre-compiled version of LibreOffice first (assuming 
you're not on Bsd of course)?  Did that encounter errors or problems?  If it 
did run smoothly it would still be good to know what is blocking compiling from 
source as that should still give you a faster, tighter, better end-result.

Hi,

I developed my database about 8 years. I moved the data over from 
Paradox. I was running Windows at the time. I moved to Ubuntu 2 1/2 
years ago, and ran OO until this past spring. When the first release of 
LibreOffice came out this past spring, I uninstalled completely open 
office and did a clean install of LibreOffice. I've never had any issues 
using my database. I would recommend doing a complete uninstall of both 
Open Office and LibreOffice, and then doing a fresh install of 
LibreOffice directly from the LibreOffice site.


Here are the instructions for the 32 bit version for Ubuntu. They should 
work fine with Mint.
Download LibreOffice to your desktop. Right click on the download and 
extract it to the desktop. Then run the following in the terminal:

sudo apt-get remove libreoffice*.*
sudo apt-get remove openoffice*.*
sudo dpkg -i ~/Desktop/LibO_3.4.3rc2_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/*.deb
sudo dpkg -i 
~/Desktop/LibO_3.4.3rc2_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/desktop-integration/libreoffice3.4-debian-menus_3.4-302_all.deb


If you are running 64 bit, simply change the version information.

If the above doesn't work, maybe you could try creating a new form in 
LibreOffice and see if that works.

I am trying to compile libreoffice 3.4.3.2 from source.


./configure --help says:

Can you be more precise as to tries ? I'm afraid that the information
you provide is insufficient to be able to hope to provide you with any
sort of answer.

LibreOffice version : 3.3.4 ? OK, but distrib version, or downloaded
from LibreOffice web site and installed by hand ??

Java SDK/JRE versions installed : ???
Java SDK/JRE versions recognised by LibreOffice : ??

In my own personal experience, running both OOo and LibO at the same
time on the same OS has regularly led to freezes, crashes and erratic
behaviour (Mac OSX and Linux).

Let's forget the Forms bit for the moment.

Can you see the list of, and access (read/write), your Tables ?

Can you see the list of, and access, your Queries ?


With regard to the form, try this :
1) Open your form in OOo 3.2.1, then "Save as..." to a location of your
choice. Close OOo completely (including any quickstarter/menu launcher
tool).

2) Open your newly saved form with LibreOffice.
In theory, the form will be detached from the database, so no data will
appear.

3) Switch to Form Edit mode and re-assign the DATA connection of your
form to the corresponding database table. Save, close and try to re-open.


4) If an attempt to open the independent form in LibreOffice fails with
a crash, then there is something in your form that LibreOffice doesn't
like in its current incarnation.

If you really want us to be able to help you with a hands-on approach,
it would be useful to have access to a copy of the database, maybe you
could make it available publicly somewhere ?

  Yes, that is possible, but I need to highlight some separate words -
not the whole text in the textbox. For now I just create a colour
rectangle in a form of a word and then place it behind the text. In the
final document (which in my case is a PDF file) it is not noticeable,
but I consider it as a "dirty" workaround and would like to know how to
do it in a better way.
