I also use styles in Writer all the time. There are a few things

I use the Debian LO download from LibreOffice. I do not know

Anyway i am sure i have either missed the announcement or that there

Hi :)
LibreOffice should work fine without java.  Sorry i only just now found your
1st email today.

So, your OS is Fedora.  Does LibreOffice work well enough without the desktop
integration packages?  I think that is the first thing to check.  Then you can
try again with the freedesktop-menus if you haven't already got that working by
now.  (Sorry i know you probably haven't been able to work at this today as

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Links in a writer document

2012-11-09 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
It sounds like you need to use Base for this.  Base is best as a decent
database front-end and then have it reading/writing the data securely in a
decent back-end such as, well it depends on roughly how much data you think you
are going to generate.  MySql/MariaDb and Postgresql are very hefty and
probably far larger than you will need.

There is some documentation about using Base
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications
but it's a bit of a work-in-progress.

Hi :)
The file-server runs on Debian.  My network admin tried explaining
file-permissions but it went right over my head.  It's nice to have the link so
i can try re-reading it until i understand it.

I do see hidden files but no ~lock file.

So, i think you are onto something with the permissions even though other
programs don't seem to have the same problem.  Although if Word or other MSO
stuff does i wouldn't have noticed of course.  I might test that later.

mode.  It's closed on my machine but his one claims it's still open.  Then
my boss changes the name, edits the document, saves and closes.  Then when
i open the new version of the document it tells me i can only open in Read
 Only (or a copy)!

It does have a slight advantage in that it forces my boss to effectively
make backups and i am gradually encouraging a standard versioning system
 other than
 filename-draft.doc
 filename-final.doc
 filename-FINAL.doc
 filename-revised.doc
 filename-final.doc
in roughly random order and sometimes without the filename part so folders
end up full of documents that could be about anything.  Draft does not
always come first and may even be the final and revised might be a revised
draft or just be a draft.  Hence frequent shouts of "so which one am i
supposed to open?".  It's slow going but at least we seem to make
 occasional steps forwards.

So, i am not sure i really want to fix the problem but it's one of the
excuses some of my colleagues use to revert to inferior products instead
 of going with LO.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Links in a writer document

2012-11-09 Thread Tom
Hi :)
Something like this?

calcINwriter.odt

If it works then you see an outlined but apparently empty box. When you
double-click inside the box you see like a calc spreadsheet. If you put
stuff into those cells then when you click outside the box (back in the
normal Writer area) then you see whatever you typed into those cells.

I'm not sure if that is how you are supposed to do it but the modules/apps
of LO are meant to operate together in a very much more tightly integrated
way than most rivals. Most rivals treat the different apps/modules (Writer,
Calc, Impress etc) as different apps that standalone. StarOffice took a
different approach.

I'm not sure if my way is what you are looking for so here is a link to
documentation
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications
Hopefully someone will soon write in with more accurate ideas that help you
better than my quick 2 minute fumbling around.

Regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)
+1
It depends on which Operating System you are using.  Are you using Redhat?
Something else in the Redhat family such as Scientific-Linux, CentOS or
something?  Please let us know which Operating System you are using so we can
help with the desktop integration.

You don't really "need" the desktop integration packages.  In 'western'
countries people use the word "need" far too much when they really mean "it
might be quite nice" or "you might like".  Of course the term "western
countries" is quite dumb considering that we all live on the same rotating ball
and everywhere is eventually west of anywhere.

Desktop integration is mostly about making LibreOffice look prettier.  At most
it might include some improved context menus that you get when you right-click
on files before opening them.  You don't really need them.

So the 4 questions i have are
1.  Have you been able to download LO from the official website?
2.  Have you been able to install the official version of LO, (apart from the
desktop integration)?

3.  Does LO seem to work?
4.  Which OS are you using?

Tom :)
