Paying special attention to the Styles Chapters is definitely important; maybe the most important chapters to look at.A guidance for LibO beginners could help to move people from MSO to LibO. I observe that many people are sticking with MSO because with huge efforts they learned to use MSO (most often just very basics) and don't want to take an effort to learn something new without a good guidance. On 2012-11-14 20:38, Tom Davies wrote: Hi:)I think just working through the Getting Started guide helps hugely.Pay special attention to the Styles chapter.wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/PublicationsI had to help someone tidy up a Word document yday and it was a total Pita.Fortunately they are very unfamiliar with MS-anything so;1.They didn't do so many of the weirdnesses that people learn to use to really stuff-up their documents and make them unreadable to everyone that isn't using their system2.There is some hope of pushing them straight into using LORegards fromTom :) From:Dr. R. Re: [libreoffice-users] Word 2003 to Libre Writer - Comparison Chart
WE do need to have some document comparing MSO [2003, 2007, 2010, and 2013] with LibreOffice as part of a Marketing Tool. We need to be able to show our users that what they are using MSO for, they can use LO to do the same. There are many advantages in using LO instead of MSO, besides the price of the software, and we need to have some official list/document from LO/TDF that describes these advantages. YES - I would like to see a chart comparing features with MSO. The last one I used was MSO2003, but we need to have LO compared to MSO 2010/13 as well. 2010 is the current version and we need to compare LO with MS's current package. It would be nice to get a MSO2013 beta and see how LO compares with that package. I know that there are differences in the UI, but the functions are the important part. Import/Export filters. MSO does not have a Draw style package, as far as I remember. Things like that. On 11/14/2012 09:05 AM, Dr. R. Re: [libreoffice-users] Word 2003 to Libre Writer - Comparison Chart
I think LO is easier to use than MSO2003. That was before the Ribbon UI was created. What I hated about MSO-2003-Word, was how long it took to be to the point where I could do anything. Then there were all these side-bar options that I could not get to stop showing up and slowing down my use of Word. LO, even at its slowest opening versions was faster to get to the point of typing/editing my document. Yes, the UI is different than MSO and we need to see about some graphic/chart showing new users where the options are in the menu-bar. I know some packages show that type of thing in a printed sheet for new users. I had one for MSO. A company called BarCharts, Inc. does a very good job creating quick study guides. I have some of their Math and Science laminated QUICK STUDY Academic sheets. I find that they were great for helping me with the formulas needs when I was substituting as a Math teacher. I have not bought any since the late 90's, but the company seems to have 5 or 10 times the number of titles since I bought the sheets from them. Word 2010 sheet - http://www.barcharts.com/Inventory/Navision/9781423214526 This company has MSO guides, but no LibreOffice ones. It would be interesting if we could get such a quick reference guide sheet created for LibreOffice. The basics should not change over the various versions. The basic UI and menu option placements should not change [much] between lines either. LibO uses not only paragraph styles but also page styles, which is a completely foreign concept to MS. [libreoffice-users] Sun Report Builder on LibreOffice Base?
Hi All, I'm using LibreOffice 3.5 on Linux Mint 13 KDE and downloaded the sun report builder which I've used on OpenOffice with success. The download appears to have gone well and Base has added the option to create a report with the design function, but that’s as far as it goes. When calling up this option, nothing happens and the wizard option also doesn’t function until I disable the report builder. Is Report Builder not compatible with LibreOffice or am I doing something wrong? Any help or advice would be appreciated. e: [libreoffice-users] Word 2003 to Libre Writer - Comparison Chart
There are still many Word 2003 users as 2007 did not offer many spectacular advances (especially for the price so many businesses, educational and nonprofit orgs, gov't, etc. did not upgrade to the ribbons. I found the ribbons at work not to be a problem as others did but there are plenty of 2003 Word users who still will not be upgrade into 2010, 2013, etc. because many have found it's diminishing returns. It costs a lot of time (training, classes, tutorials, trial and error) and money (training, money lost while being trained) to re-learn Word with each upgrade and the returns have been found by many to be minimal in comparison to the costs. Here's my bold proposal, s'il vous plaît? How about if we (end users) on this list all contribute our shortcuts we've learned transitioning from Word (2003, 2007) to Libre Office? We could create on our own a chart with column headings ... Ex. FunctionLibre WriterWord 2003 Word 2007 Set default font? x x much like WordPerfect did many years ago where you can look at the chart for a function (e.g. changing the default font for all documents created) and next to that have the method used in Libre Writer and next to that the method the method used in Word 2003 and next that Word 2007. Along the way we can all contribute to each of those columns what we have learned. Many Word and WordPerfect users I speak with won't use Libre Writer because of the learning curve. They already spent a lot of time (and often aggravation) leaning Word 2003, 2007 and/or the latest WP development their attitude is - Oh, no! Not another one! But, if they could get up to speed quickly with a cheat sheet with at least the most often used features/functions of a word processor like Libre Writer then they would be more apt to use it and more likely not feel they have to buy another Word version. There was a time when users were afraid of Open Source software. Early versions may have been too complicated, too many bugs or they would hear of the apocryphal (often unfounded) tales of the horrors of Open Source software. That's no longer true. Users learned over time the world would not end if they didn't use Internet Explorer to browse the web - that Firefox and Opera actually worked just fine and attracted less badware. They they tried Thunderbird, pdf995 and Audacity and lo and behold they not only worked well and easier their friends and family still loved them...as much as they ever did or could. So, as users became more educated about Open Source software they realized they could use it, it wouldn't make their heads explode and they enjoyed pocketing all their savings. They also learned there were some great forums on the net where you could reach out to other users and they would share their workable solutions. So, what do you say?! Shall we start on that chart and slowly but surely fill it in along the way and educate others about how Libre Writer can be their wordoprocessor of choice? Or we could just eat dark chocolate. Hi :) Alternatively just insert the pages and then cutpaste the images back to the correct page. Their position on the 'new' page remains exactly the same as it was. Re: e: [libreoffice-users] Word 2003 to Libre Writer - Comparison Chart
Actually, Jay, I have found the transitions from MSOffice normally quite easy, both with LO and OO; it may be that I automate so few things, and I certainly would appreciate a cheat sheet, but it's not a deal killer for me personally. Sometimes I think people TELL you they don't want to change because it's difficult, but the real reason is something else--corporate environment, etc. I've become addicted to open source software (Scribus, Gimp...) because it works, it's easy to get the new releases, and for the most part, it's very satisfactory. There will always be a few aficionados who want things just like Word, etc., but I doubt they will ever change. Ex. FunctionLibre WriterWord 2003Word 2007 Set default font?xx much like WordPerfect did many years ago where you can look at the chart for a function (e.g. changing the default font for all documents created) and next to that have the method used in Libre Writer and next to that the method the method used in Word 2003 and next that Word 2007. It's all good. Charles. Thanks Tom, that would have saved me some time. It is a pity there is no Insert page as opposed to a shove all text down one page. Also be nice if you could specify the paragraph or character to anchor to when anchored that way. Re: [libreoffice-users] Anchoring images and inserting pages.
Hi. But the anchor cannot be below the image or above another paragraph that is above or in line with the image. Put 2 images on the right of the page so text wraps left of them. Have 3 or 4 paragraphs in the space to the left of the images. Anchor both images to the top paragraph. Unless things have improved from 3.5 or I am missing things completely it doesn't work. It has worked in other software from a long time ago, so long I can't remember. You could move the anchor to any paragraph on the page and the image stayed relative to it.
