Re: [libreoffice-users] Chart Range Entire Column

2012-12-05 Thread Brian Barker

At 10:55 05/12/2012 -0800, Joel Madero wrote:
I want to know if there's a way to make a chart range be an entire
column so that if I add data I don't have to manually alter the
range. For instance, every month I do expenses and the new row would
be "MM/" then there's expenses and income listed, every time I
add a new entry I have to manually update the data range which is a
hassle. If I select the entire column as a data range it
automatically adjusts to the last row with data. Furthermore, if I
just do a range that has like 10,000 extra rows (Maybe A1:A1)
the chart is squished (it doesn't auto adjust according to logic of
where last cell contains data and then update when new data is entered).

There is a slightly messy workaround that may make your life
simpler. Depending on the chart type you have chosen, it may be
possible to add an extra row of data that will not affect the
appearance of your chart. In some cases you may simply be able to
repeat one row of data - possibly the first - at the end of your
columns of data without affecting what you see in the chart. There
will be two coincident points (or whatever) in your chart, but that
may not be visible and thus not spoil the effect. You might even
change the font colour or background colour of the dummy row of
cells, or mark it some other way to remind yourself or your readers
that it is not extra genuine data.

Now for the trick! When you need to add a new row for your new
month, don't simply add it at the end. Instead, select just the
cells in your final, dummy row and then go to Insert | Cells... (or
right-click | Insert...). In the Insert Cells dialogue, choose
"Shift cells down" and click OK. Now enter your new data in its
correct place in the list - in the new empty cells you have revealed.

What is the point of all this? Well, when you insert cells in this
way into data ranges already defined in your chart, the ranges are
automatically updated to include the inserted cells. The data being
charted now extends from your first data row to your last, dummy data
row, including your new data.

I trust this helps.

This is the programmed behaviour. Whether, as a UI experience, it is
normal, is a matter of debate ;-)

The result set is cached, and the window display also caches part of the
result set to avoid performance penalties by not having to redraw all
elements of the window, hence the misleading information. Some work was
done recently in 3.6/3.7/4.0 development to improve this handling, but
it was mainly around the window refresh area from what I recall, as
other changes to the code had caused this bit to be even slower, and not
refresh at all, or at best take so long about it that the user got a
blank screen :-/

So, at the moment, your best bet is probably to put in a request for
enhancement, after having tested on LO 3.6.x to see if there's any
difference when compared to 3.5.x.

[libreoffice-users] Base Form behavior.

2012-12-05 Thread Hank Alper
Hi,
I've been composing an LO Base application using Mariano Casanova's
excellent tutorial (written for OO Base) as a guide and I'm pleased with
the progress I've been able to make thus far.
I have observed some strange behavior, however, when using the triangular
widgets in the navigation bar at the bottom of the forms. For example, when
I open a form which maintains tables currently containing 201 records, the
navigation bar indicates "1 of 41" records. As I click my way toward the end
of the file using the "next record widget" when I get to record 42 the
display reads "42 of 81 records". However, if I click on the widget for the
last record, the form displays the data for the last record and correctly
shows "201 of 201" records. Returning to the first record via the "start of
file widget" results in proper behavior. The navigation bar then shows "1
of 201" records and thereafter, when moving back and forth through the
records everything works properly.
I'm running LO Base 3.5 on a Windows 7 machine. I observed the same
behavior on OO Base and just downloaded LO 3,6 on another Win 7 machine
with the same result. Is this a bug? Has anyone noticed this type of
behavior ? Base seems to start out handling records in increments of about
40 records until it finds the end of the file. Strange.

Hello-

Are you simply trying to install the latest release of LibreOffice or
are you just interested in compiling it?

dpkg is the debian package manager so no that command doesn't extract
it, it installs the binary to your system.

There really is no need to compile it if you are planning on using it
for normal every day use.

If you really want to compile then I would suggest you watch this video
that was just created for this purpose:

Hi Anthony,

This is how I update to each new version of the Document Foundation
version of Libre Office. This is for the 64 bit version, but simply
substitute the 32 bit version for the 64 bit. This is for the latest
3.6.4.3 release:

Download LibO_3.6.4.3_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz to the desktop.
Right click on it and extract it to the desktop. This will give you the
folder LibO_3.6.4.3_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US

Run the following terminal commands to install it:
1. sudo apt-get remove libreoffice*.*
2. sudo dpkg -i
~/Desktop/LibO_3.6.4.3_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/*.deb
3. sudo dpkg -i
~/Desktop/LibO_3.6.4.3_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/desktop-integration/libreoffice3.6-debian-menus_3.6.4-3_all.deb

I hope this helps you. This isn't exactly what you asked, but it does
work well for installing LibreOffice.

The feature list of LO 3.5 states, that it is possible to set the tab stop

I tried this and, I was not able to get it to work, instead a newline is
inserted.

It would be nice, if anyone could give me a hint or tell me if additional
setting have to be made.

   If this is a poll, I like this feature in g-mail - and others;
for those who wish to see all, use the 'all mail' rather than
the 'inbox' ;-)

If this is a poll, I still detest this list's reply feature ...
having to doctor the e-addresses is time-consuming & frustrating; and
causes errors.

The Pole went to the poll only to find a pole; so he set out to
polish his Polish furniture ... ;-)

Tom,
That does sound painful!
As a test, I was successful at Inserting a PDF as a Draw OLE object in a
Writer document. Here is what I did:

  1. Using the PDF importer, I opened the PDF file, which brings up Draw.
  2. While in Draw, I saved the PDF file as an ODF Draw file.
  3. I opened a new Writer document.
  4. Using Insert -> Object -> OLE Object -> LibreOffice 3.5 Drawing, I
got a Draw window embedded in the Writer document.
  5. Double-click on the Draw object window to bring up the draw OLE.
  6. Open the ODF file saved in step #2.
  7. Click outside the Draw OLE window (anywhere in the document but
the Draw OLE window) to get out of Draw.
  8. You should have the PDF image from step #1 now in Writer.

Note that the PDF importer does not seem to work if attempting to
directly open the PDF file in step #6. It seems to think it is opening
the PDF in Writer, not the Draw OLE window. There are many limitations
to the Draw OLE that the Draw program itself does not have.
You may have to do some scaling or dragging the Draw window tags around
to get the size you want. Note that the Object properties dialog has a
lot to do with formatting this object (right click on the Draw OLE ->
select Object).

Hope this helps.

[libreoffice-users] Merging with Calc only

2012-12-05 Thread J. Michael Morse
I would like to handout worksheets to students with their names already
printed on it.

I have a workbook in Calc with two spreadsheets. The first spreadsheet
is simply a list of names (NAMES). The second spreadsheet is a form
with, among other things, a name field (FORM). I would like to print
FORM as many times as the NAMES field contains, and of course have each
form with each individual name on it.

I have googled this and seen many results but they all refer to using
Writer. Can this be done using just Calc?

Cheers.

You are using 3.5.6. Since that time, 3.5.7 was issued to fix a

I agree that this can be frustrating. I do seem to remember of

had cases where within a single cell, due to cut past issues, I end up with
text in 2 or more font sizes. I want to be able to just reset the entire sheet
to my preferred font and size. I can change the font but not the size that way
even though it appears to be working it doesn't actually change the font.

And finally no matter what I do the help file is blank when I open it up. I
believe it's a related font issue but cannot seem to fix it.

Something to try: open Wrtier with a blank document ("Untitled").
Use this key combination: Command+T. This opens the Styles and
Formatting window. The list you see are the paragraphs styles. Locate
Default in that list. Then Control+Click Default and select Modify from
the context menu. Click the Font tab. This has three lists: Family, the
Typeface, and the font sizes. See if you can change what you need here.
If you open Calc and use these same key combinations, you should
be able to do the same thing.
Another key combination to use with Writer open: Command+,
(Command key and comma). This opens Preference. Look at LibreOffice
Writer -> Basic Fonts Western. There you can set the font that you want
to use for LibreOffice and the font sizes for specific categories.
If I had my choice, I would use the Styles and Formatting window
for changing fonts and their sizes. I have been doing this on my Mac for
the past 4 years with no problems with originally OpenOffice.org and
lately LibreOffice.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Chart Range Entire Column

2012-12-05 Thread Joel Madero
I'll look into both solutions provided although the Base one kind of goes
outside of the scope of what I'm looking for. This is an issue that has
applied to a lot of spreadsheets for me and an auto update feature would be
really useful. My spreadsheet structure is like this:

A|B|C
Date|Income|Expenses
YY/DD/MM||

It seems like this wouldn't be the best for a database and seems to be
perfect for a spreadsheet.

Many thanks, I will be putting this into FDO as an enhancement request, I
believe that MSO does it but not positive.

Joel

What You seem to be looking for is an auto-scaling feature which I
don't believe has been yet implemented.

Scientifically is correct that if you specify a range of x rows, the
graphic makes room for all af them, even if empty, because if they are
in the range, their data has to be considered (even null).

By the way it's an interesting point of view and could be suggested as
a new feature to be added as an option for instance, I think, because
it could be useful as well.

What I can tell You to solve this, for the moment, is to double click
into the graphic to go editing it, and then double click the Date's
axis. Now You can specify in the first Tab (Scale) the Maximum Value,
avoiding the Automatic Option. In this way it will render just the
portion of Data You'll need.

It still requires to edit the graphic, but I think it's surely better
and faster than having to modify the Data Values Area. And I think You
could do this once a quad, leaving not too much blank space at the end
of the graphic.

I really hope to have been useful for You and all people reading, and
also to have aimed a good solution without forgetting other ones which
could have been simpler.

Would setting up your Calc spreadsheet as a database eliminate
this problem? Then create the chart as a report using Base as a front
end and HSQLDB as the back end.
I would be curious as to the structure of your chart (columns and
rows) to see if I could create a report for my personal financial
database. I might even be able to add this to chapter 4 of the Base
Guide for others.

Hi.
In my mac I see the font file for Geneva is .dfont. For arial (and the
others I use) I have a .ttf. (I think I deleted the mac arial and added
the ttf because the mac arial threw my spacing out on documents with
arial). Don't know if it makes a difference, also tried a document in
Geneva and it seems ok so far.

No preferences for a default font, only the option to set up a font
substitution table. Which is empty in the way the system is installed
initially. No Idea how to even start setting it to work. .

I've also run the font book app and verified that all fonts are ok and there
are no duplicates.

I have already tried deleting my user profile but that doesn't help.

This has been known to happen, I've seen it with Writer, but don't
recall it happening with Calc (yet), possibly because I wasn't using one
of the affected fonts in that sheet.

Which fonts is LO configured to use for the basic display of the
application ? In Preferences, there should be something that lets you
set the default font, and possibly a substitute font for rendering if
the initial one isn't there ?

Failing that, I would suggest moving/deleting your LO-user profile (make
sure LO isn't running first), and then letting LO create a new one when
you restart, to see if that helps at all.

Hi :)

If rsync is available on Windows then it might not be so easy to
charge people so much for apps that do back-ups.  Unless no-one knew

kind of like with LO

anyway, there are Windows versions.

I tried a back-up utility that looked great until i used it to
restore a bootable Windows and found the Windows boot-loader was
completely lost because things were not in exactly the right place.

in my experience Windows7 puts some kind of 'metadata' file at some
exact location in the middle or towards the end of the 'boot'
partition; it screws up if it doesn't find it exactly where it expects
it. thus one has to be cautious about resizing a Windows partition
with non-Windows software.

Someone suggested using dd but to grep it through some archiving
tool.  I did fix the Windows restored drive but by installing
Grub2.  Grub2 survived the back-up and restore process but it felt
like i was cheating because the whole purpose was to restore the
machine to exactly the way it arrived from the store.

I'm going to ask about grepping a dd through an archiving tool on
http://www.linuxquestions.org

to see if they can give me a good idea of how to actually write the command.

it's easier just to google it (I always forget the syntax); lot of
useful pages but perhaps this is a start
.

the thing about dd is that it is _exact_ so suppose you have 30g on a
100g partition; dd will copy all 110g including 'empty' space. this
also means you cannot restore to a partition that is smaller than
100g.

this is good for that Windows 7 issue since everything is exactly in
place. I'd be more inclined to shrink that partition using Windows,
thus avoiding the metadata problem, and then back up, etc.

Tom :)

Additional info to my previous post.
After deleting a field consisting number range, I tried to update fields
by pressing F9. It seemed not working (it didn't fix a "phantom"
reference in text). But now I noticed that closing document and opening
it again and pressing F9 helps. Really weird...

Hi Graham,

Finally got it after about 3 de/install cycles.

During the installation I have to select English and French, just
English isn't good enough:(.

After that I can select English in the language settings and then the
built-in help is working.

Thanks for getting me going

you insert a "Number Range" by Insert > Fields > Other... > Tab

To insert the reference in you text use Insert > Fields > Other... > Tab

2012-12-05 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
If rsync is available on Windows then it might not be so easy to charge people
so much for apps that do back-ups.  Unless no-one knew about it of course.

I tried a back-up utility that looked great until i used it to restore a
bootable Windows and found the Windows boot-loader was completely lost because
things were not in exactly the right place.  Someone suggested using dd but to
grep it through some archiving tool.  I did fix the Windows restored drive but
by installing Grub2.  Grub2 survived the back-up and restore process but it
felt like i was cheating because the whole purpose was to restore the machine
to exactly the way it arrived from the store.

I'm going to ask about grepping a dd through an archiving tool on
http://www.linuxquestions.org
to see if they can give me a good idea of how to actually write the command.

Your problem is not with the LibreOffice list, but with your mail
provider Gmail - which has a bug^H^H^H feature which suppresses
copies distributed to you of your own messages to the list.

Google says:
When you send mail to any group or mailing list you subscribe to,
Gmail automatically skips your inbox and archives the message to
save you time and prevent clutter. The message will appear in your
inbox if someone responds to it or if there is an error delivering
the message. If you'd like to view your message, you can find it
in Sent Mail or All Mail.

It can be argued that this practice is unhelpful.

I think there is some default setting when you apply to these lists
that sets it so you can't see your own posts except through Nabble or GMane.

Then you think wrongly - unless you explicitly subscribe to the
"nomail" version of the list (and that is no default; indeed, it is
not even mentioned at the web site).

So, it's not just GMail that is blocking him.

I fear it is.

Personally I think it's a huge benefit. I see my own posts in
people's replies and notice all the horrible tpyos and
embarrassments that I didn't notice while typing. So, i am quite glad of it.

This makes no sense. If (as would be sensible) you are concerned to
be aware of the appearance of your own messages as distributed by the
list, you would deprecate Gmail's practice, not applaud it.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Pdf import. Was: Fw: Wiki quick guide page - see if this is a good format. . .

2012-12-05 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
There are many different sorts of Pdfs (fdf "and what-not" as Amiko says in
interviews on Nasa tele).  Sometimes forms can be filled out using a proper Pdf
reader such as Foxit (a good Pdf reader in Windows) but sometimes people try to
make things difficult so that you are forced into using Adobe's Pdf reader, or
use a work-around as you did with the frst one in Draw (sounded like a Pita
though).

One company sent me a Pdf form to fill in and then complained that i returned
it as a Pdf!  It had been a bit ilke a multiple choice in that it had one
question per line but instead of the choices it just left the rest of the line
empty.  I pulled the form into Writer, set it as the background, added a 2
column table on top and adjusted the row's widths to fit the form and then
wrote on my layer and saved as Pdf.  I was really chuffed because it's the
first time i had managed anything like it with Pdfs but then got a complaint!

I eventually saw the funny side of the hypocrasy but it took a cuppa tea or
two.  I think i wrote back suggesting the form would be easier for people to
fill in if they had 2 copies with the 2nd one being the original Doc format.

This crazy need for "Reply to" or whatever is a different story.
It's made it much more difficult to get through the posts and i make

it's impossible! I have to type in the correct mailing list address

apologies to Brian: I didn't see his post (it wasn't delivered for
some reason).

I wish I could wean myself of gmail.

Your problem is not with the LibreOffice list, but with your mail provider
Gmail - which has a bug^H^H^H feature which suppresses copies distributed to
you of your own messages to the list.

Google says:

When you send mail to any group or mailing list you subscribe to, Gmail
automatically skips your inbox and archives the message to save you time and
prevent clutter. The message will appear in your inbox if someone responds to
it or if there is an error delivering the message. If you'd like to view your
message, you can find it in Sent Mail or All Mail.

It can be argued that this practice is unhelpful.

I trust this helps.

[libreoffice-users] tab behind end margin

2012-12-05 Thread metaphalon
Hi

The feature list of LO 3.5 states, that it is possible to set the tab stop
behind the end margin, so the following text can continue after the tab
stop.
I tried this and, I was not able to get it to work, instead a newline is
inserted.

It would be nice, if anyone could give me a hint or tell me if additional
setting have to be made.

Best regards
Sven

Re: [libreoffice-users] query re. LO crashing ...

2012-12-05 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
grsync has a nice pretty gui front-end but uses
rsync
to do the work, of course.  Rsync works from the command-line and has more
options but GRsync is easier for point&click users like me.

One advantage is that it keeps permissions intact whereas copy&paste or
drag&drop tend to twist things so that the current user can read/write.  Not
something you want with system files.

I was just making the point that LO's User Profile is happy to let the user
mess around with it quite a lot.  Evolution's gets really grumbly about it and
you soemtimes have to export your stuff from inside the program, then upgrade,
then open the new versions and import.  VERY different from the friendliness of
LO's user profile.

Btw thanks for the warning about hard-drive noises.  My new machine at work has
started making occasional noises but it's so intermittent i was ignoring them.
Good idea to back-up now right!?!  I used to know someone that would always
leave it until it made horrible grinding noises but then he kept losing data.
I'm really glad i am not living in a hot, sandy, windy desert anymore!

Tom :)

you are probably just joshing around but 'sync' has nothing to do with
'sink'; one is germanic, the other is greek.

 'syn'+'chronos' as in 'synchronize'.

sometimes the spelling of words, like the syntax of directory paths,
 matters.

(and 'syntax' has nothing to do with 'sin' or 'taxes'!)

'rsync' is a great utility; I assume it's available for Windows but I
don't know but there's certainly equivalent stuff.
