[libreoffice-users] Intro to LibreOffice Presentations

2013-03-12 Thread Aaron C Johnson

Hello everyone-

Awhile back I created a couple of LibreOffice presentations that I used
to help teach the basics of LibreOffice to our elementary school
teachers. There are two presentations; the first one covers Writer and
Calc, and the second one covers Impress.

You can download them from here:

Introduction to LibreOffice - Writer and Calc: ODP
 PPT

PDF

Introduction to LibreOffice - Impress - By Aaron Johnson: ODP

PPT

PDF

Anyone is welcome to take these and modify them as you like, I just ask
that if you change them that you take out my name (Aaron Johnson) and
also remove "Jordan Catholic School" from the presentations as well...
Credit for my work does not need to be given, you can claim it as your
own if you desire :)

If this is the case, then add step 3 to the directions previously
posted -
   right-click on the document ->
  click on 'properties' ->
 check the 'read-only' box.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: [MariaDB Announce] MariaDB 5.5.30 now available

2013-03-12 Thread Dan Lewis
There is development work on a mysql/mariadb connector that Alex
discovered requiring some changes in how the connecter is built. When
working with the leading edge source code, I had to install MariaDB.
Then I was informed that I needed to work with the 4.0 source code. That
is when I had to re-install Ubuntu. But after that, I was able to build
two mysql-connector-ooo.oxt: x86 for 32 bit AND x86-64 for 64 bit. As
soon as I can finish everything within these files, I will upload them
to the Extension section of the LO website. The working parts of these
files work, but the documentation part is not what it should be yet.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Problem with MySQL after upgrading OpSys

2013-03-12 Thread Girvin R. Herr

Ian,
You give the versions for LO and MySQL-connector-java, but I don't see
which version of MySQL itself you are using. MySQL made some
configurations changes in the name of security between 5.1 and 5.5,
especially with how localhost is handled. I participated in such a
thread a while back. The mysql configuration file changes differ between
the versions. Make sure you are using the proper configuration for
localhost based on the MySQL version.

Hope this helps.

Hi All

Been busy for a few days with my monthly Journal so had to put this
problem on the 'Back-Burner'.

I have been using Base for a few years now and finally got fed up with
all the crashes and lost data. So late last year - with a LOT of very
appreciated help from the Forum - I managed to get MySQL working 100%
with Base as the front end.

At the beginning of March I upgraded my OpSys to the latest version
(PClinuxOS 2013.02) and my LibreOffice to 4.0.0.3. I tried this first
on a "Test Computer" I have here and all worked well, including
MySQL!! So I upgraded my main machine.

I have everything working fine _EXCEPT_ for MySQL on this machine!!
(Rather strange that one computer works and the other does not!! Both
have Intel Motherboards and CPUs).

I seem to be at the stage that I can not get phpMyAdmin to run because
of httpd, which I am unable to set to run at boot.

When I try to log in to phpMyAdmin I get the error "#1045 Cannot log
in to the MySQL server"

I really need to "crack" this one urgently and I'm hoping Alex,
Gervin, Dan, Heinz or some of our other MySQL/Base "Boffins" will be
able to help me. As I said previously I posted this problem on the
PCLOS Forum and one guy - "YouCanToo" - came back to me a few times
but we were not able to crack it and he has no "disappeared"!!

This is what I did in setting up the system ...

Yes, my bad.
What I was looking for is to rotate 90° counterclockwise rotation using
4.0. That option didn't seem to work but now I can say that is related to a
propietary format file. After being redone the table from scratch the
rotation works just fine.

Yes Tom - 32bit PCLinuxOS, and yes everything is on the one computer, ie
'localhost'

This applies to both of my computers. One works and the other does not.
Yet both were set-up the same way from the same DVD!!

[libreoffice-users] Re: Can't view/edit python macro samples

2013-03-12 Thread mickeyf
Thank you Alex. I found them under

C:\Program Files (x86)\LibreOffice 4.0\share\Scripts\python\pythonSamples

I was interested in using macros with calc, but since they should also be
available in writer I find it a bit ironic that I need a external program
(or non-integrated access) to edit what is, after all, just a text file.

Thanks again.

[libreoffice-users] Problem with MySQL after upgrading OpSys

2013-03-12 Thread Ian Whitfield

I tried this first on
a "Test Computer" I have here and all worked well, including MySQL!! So
I upgraded my main machine.

When I try to log in to phpMyAdmin I get the error "#1045 Cannot log in
to the MySQL server"

I really need to "crack" this one urgently and I'm hoping Alex, Gervin,
Dan, Heinz or some of our other MySQL/Base "Boffins" will be able to
help me. As I said previously I posted this problem on the PCLOS Forum
and one guy - "YouCanToo" - came back to me a few times but we were not
able to crack it and he has no "disappeared"!!

This is what I did in setting up the system ...

_*INSTALL THE FOLLOWING*_-

 *

   *MySQL*– Database. /(//now //Installs automatically)/

 *

   *MyAdmin*- Database Manager. (*'**phpMyAdmin**'*through Synaptic)

 *

   *MySQL **C**onnector.*- Download
   *'**mysql-connector-java-5.1.2**3.tar.gz**' *from the MySQL Download
page,**un-tar it, then inLO go to Options -> Advanced. There you
specify the directory into which you put the .jar-file of the
connector in the 'Class Path' under 'Add Archives'.

 *

   *mysqli Extension *download*'php-mysqli' *via Synaptic.

*_SET-UP STEPS_ ...*

*A **.*Check*my.cnf*file in /etc and comment out the line “skip
networking” by putting a # at the front of it. Thisenables network
(localhost) access.

*B. *Start*MyAdmin **- **(**For **F**irst-**T**ime **U**se**)*- STOP the
MySQL Server in PCC and reset the MySQL root password. Enter the
following lines in your terminal.

1.

Start the mysqld configuration *as SU*.

   mysqld --skip-grant-tables &

2.

   Login to MySQL as root.

   mysql -u root mysql

3.

Replace YOURNEWPASSWORD with your new password!

   UPDATE user SET Password=PASSWORD('YOURNEWPASSWORD') WHERE User='root';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES; exit;

Re-start MyAdmin in the PCC.

*
C. *Start*MyAdmin* as 'root' with your new password. ** *[_THIS IS WHEN
I GET THE ERROR_**]*

Someone mentioned that there are other options to MyAdmin but do not
know about these.

What are your suggestions for me to crack this one please.

Regards

IanW

Re: [libreoffice-users] Installer Languages

2013-03-12 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Thanks :)  A lot of interesting notes in there.  Couple of things i wanted to
clarify;
1.  Does the downloads screen and/or home page automatically appear in "local
language" or in English for you?
2.  The installer starts in "local language" even though you carefully selected
"English US" as the download package?

Also thanks for the hint about getting the "Asian language support package"
because i think that is why people can't type in Japanese on Windows where i
work.  From the MS website it seems that's an extra $25 and then there is
another $25 package if i want MS Office to have Japanese menus.  Of course i
only need 1 of those because LibreOffice supports other languages for free.
The other could be avoided if i could get people to use Gnu&Linux a bit more.
Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

On top of this I use 4 languages on my PC. All is working perfectly fine.

My OS is XP Prof English with Asian language support package. My PC is equipped with a Japanese
keyboard, which is different from the US keyboard, because this makes working in Japanese easier.
However, it should also be possible with other keyboards.

When I go for the download of LibO, I get the Japanese version offered.
I neglect this and choose "Change System, Version or Language"

There I select OS and LibO English US, because this is the multi-language
version.

I use English as default language and select in the CUSTOMIZED installation additionally Japanese,
German, and Dutch; I also include the GUIs in these languages.

I personally work with English GUI, the others are for people who need to
something on my PC.

When I need to switch between Latin character languages I just type in the language and only need to
adjust the spell checker. (There is a little bug in 3.6.5 but not too bad; it is reported already.)

When switching to Japanese, I use a special key on my keyboard (with a non-Japanese keyboard a
certain key combination is needed) and I can work in Japanese.

LibO allows switching word-by-word if needed.

Switching the GUI takes about 1 min. Tools / Options / Language Settings / Languages selection of
the needed GUI language, OK, close LibO and start it again.

I am personally very pleased with this functionality of LibO.

During the installation you need to unfortunately to understand the local language. The installation
wizard starts only with the local language. To choose the installation wizard language could be an
enhancement for people who don't speak the local language.

I wrote this contribution because the equivalent can be applied for all other non-latin character
languages.

Hi :)
There is some discussion on the translators list about which language
appears when you install LibreOffice. If you happen to live in a country
where the dominant language is not your own then when you buy a computer
which language is the LibreOffice installer in
1. your own language
2. the dominant language of the country
3. English (US)
Obviously you can change it or add different languages but you have to
understand the default language enough to be able to navigate your way
around. Apparently in Japan it's not possible to buy a machine with
Japanese on it. Keyboards have English as the main letter on each key but
it's rare to find one that has Japanese characters even as 2nd place. There
are many other reasons why a person's computer might be talking a language
that is not easy or them to understand. Here is how the Ubuntu installer
gets around the problem. Their installer lists languages with each name
written in the language it relates to ...

My machine's "Regional settings" are set to English so i get this at first
...
Ubuntu-English-v2.png

However if i use the keyboard aroows to move down a bit then i get to Greek
like this ...
Ubuntu-ελληνικά-v2.png

note that the installer's dialogue box increases in size to accommodate the
increase in paragraph size.

Of course it's a bit annoying for me because i only understand 1 language so
i can't read all the different names. So if i want to install in Japanese
for one of my colleagues then i don't know the difference between Chinese,
Korean, Japanese or other ones that look similar to me (errr, ok i cheated
and used Google translate). I think the LibreOffice installer might be
even better if it could have 2 columns with the 2nd column being a listing
in whichever language happens to be selected at the time. For example in
the 1st screen-shot the columns would show (just restricting the
English English
ελληνικά Greek
日本人 Japanese

but in the 2nd screen-shot they would appear as
English Αγγλικά
ελληνικά ελληνικά
日本人 ιαπωνικά

I just wondered what other people here thought about the issue. Also i
wondered if anyone else have to do IT Support for people whose 1st language
is different from your own?
Regards from
Tom :)
