Re: [libreoffice-users] Possible to write reports with relationship data?

Hi :)
Have you tried doing Reports in Writer?  Writer should be able to use the
database as it's data-source and then you put the fields in the appropriate
places with whatever formatting you like that Writer has.

All the report tutorials I've seen seem somewhat primitive, in terms of
what kinds of structures can be printed.

If I have a main entity, and I have two one-to-many relationships to other
tables (FK links from the other tables to the main table), is there any way
to generate a report with the main table data, and the data for the other
relationships also included (indented and formatted properly)?

2013-05-15 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Just because 3 different ways have been described doesn't mean you have to
argue the merits of all 3.  Just use whichever one you like first time and then
maybe try others ion the future sometime to see the difference.  The first
answer was the best because it was the first and given quite quickly.

In most User Support places that would be the end of the ticket but here we
carry on and give other options and discuss side-issues.  The original poster
still hasn't told us that we solved the problem so we keep finding other ways
until he's happy.  Sometimes even after that we carry on discussing the issues.
I don't see that as a bad thing.

I have just thought of another way and i'm somewhat surprised that no-one else
seems to have pointed it out.  There must be at least 1 headless way.
Something like

libreoffice --convert-to pdf /path-name/file-name

but i doubt that is exactly right!

Tom :)

Another way, but i think this is only on GnuLinux (such as Ubuntu,
Mageia, Mint, OpenSUSE, Redhat, Chrome etc)

File - Print - Print to file

this way embeds all the fonts and stuff into the Pdf image.  It's a bit
more awkward because you have to play around with the different tabs in
 the
printer dialogue-box.  Anne's method is the one i usually go for

 File - Export as Pdf

This way gives you tons more options such as how much compression and
 what
type, whether to add PDF/A1 to help people with screen-readers be able to
read the document more easily.  It even gives an option of adding the
 .odt
into the Pdf so that LibreOffice users can edit the file more easily.
Non-LibreOffice users just don't see the editable file hidden inside.

[libreoffice-users] deploy java macro with document

2013-05-15 Thread Vieri
Hi,

I'd like to deploy a compiled Java macro with an ODT document.

According to
http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/DevGuide/Scripting/Writing_Macros:

If you want to deploy the macro to a document you need to place it in a
Scripts/java directory within the document zip file.

What does that mean exactly?

I tried the following:
I saved the ODT file within a subdir and placed my Java macro (and descriptor
file) within subdir/Scripts/java/MYJAVAMACRO.
If I load the document and go to Tools-Macros-Run macros, I can't see my Java
macro under the document tree.

What am I doing wrong?

Eventually I'd like to store my odt + java macros within a webdav directory so
that the dir structure would be something like this:
https://server.com/webdav/docs/doc1.odt
https://server.com/webdav/docs/Scripts/java/MYJAVAMACRO/parcel-descriptor.xml
https://server.com/webdav/docs/Scripts/java/MYJAVAMACRO/MYJAVAMACRO.jar

Clients would open the ODT files like this:

soffice -o https://server.com/webdav/docs/doc1.odt

I can't seem to load the Java macro in my webdav setup but I'd first like to
see if I can load it in my local setup.

Thanks,

Vieri

Re: [libreoffice-users] deploy java macro with document

2013-05-15 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I'm not certain but something like this?

1.  Make a copy of the file
2.  Rename the file-ending from .odt to .zip
3.  double-click on the file

(note that some users, usually on GnuLinux can simply right click on the file
and choose Open With ... to choose Archive Manager, or WinZip/WinRar or
whatever you use to compress files)

Now you can see files and folders inside the document.  I'm guessing you can
just create the folder you want, drop the macro in and then change the
file-ending again back to Odt this time.

Errr, the reason for making a copy is that i'm not convinced this is going to
work so you'll need to be able to go back to the original if it really messes
things up.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Italics and bold in BASE.

Le 14/05/13 12:40, Ian Whitfield a écrit :

Hi Ian,

Open in normal mode and whatever you enter in the field will have the
Italics and/or Bold that you selected above.

I suspect that what the original poster is looking for is the possibilty
to type text strings into memo/longvarchar type field and then
selectively enable the bold or italic attributes, as apparently one can
do in Access (or in other DB GUI frontend software).

Unfortunately, whilst this is possible in Base if you change the
properties of your text field to Multiline with formatting, nothing
you write in that field will be bound to the underlying data table :

- additionally, this doesn't even currently work on OSX (bug), i.e. the
attributes show no visible change, even if they are chosen from the
right mouse button click context menu when selecting a typed-in word;

- any text that is already present in the underlying table to which the
text field control was previously bound will become invisible ;

- as the text data which is newly entered or modified is not bound to
the field of the corresponding data table, it can never be written to
the table, which means that closing the form and then re-opening it
results in the loss of any data you might just have entered - at least,
this is certainly the case on OSX (having just tried it).

All in all, a pretty useless feature, except perhaps if you just want
your form to contain some bold or underlined formatted text, e.g. as a
warning, general information, or other reminder, to the user of the form.

The whole notion of formatted fields is hopelessly underdeveloped in
Base. Oh, and did I forget to mention that it doesn't work on OSX ;-) so
its not even cross-platform compatible, meaning that you can't swap with
your colleagues and friends on other OSes and expect to see the same
thing - magnifique, non ?

No, this is not possible. See my response in the other thread where your
question was re-posted.

Only forms can have a multiline with formatting text control.

The text entered into such a control is not bound to any underlying
field of a database table, and so can not be stored in the database.
Basically, such a control is only any good for informational purposes
for the user of the form.

If you are using LibreOffice on OSX, even the change of attributes
functionality doesn't work (bug).

Yes, Tim and I are not sure if this is a problem with LibreOffice or with

I didn't know the odt files were compressed files.

So now I have to re-think my webdav solution because I was hoping to deploy

Hi :)
Hmmm, i sometimes get that error message when i try to save to the network
file-shares here.  If i save to the local machine and then copy onto the
network it seems fine.  I've had the same problem with a couple other apps and
other machines so i assumed it was related to network issues at my end.

hmm, spoke too soon.
If I follow your steps I get the following error when trying to open my
modified .odt file (with Scripts/java/etc. in the zip's root dir):

General Error.
General input/output error.

I tried other subdirs but the result was the same.
I noticed that the Basic scripts where at the top-most level, under
Basic-MacroName, etc.
So I tried also putting java at the top-level (without Scripts) but the
same error message came up.

I have a Base Form that uses a ListBox based on a SQL query. When a record

In Microsoft Access, I just said Requery and I didn't even need to specify
the control.

How do I get a Form to requery in LibreOffice?

Hi :)
I think the devs list might usually be the best place for this sort of thing
but you just happen to catch this list at a particularly good time and it's
been this way for years already.

From my limited understanding of database programs isn't it better to use
Queries for the SQL?  Then the Form gets it's data from the Query.  Presumably
that way would refresh the data almost instantly?  It looks like you might
already be doing it that way.

Are you using an external back-end for the Tables of data?  If so which one?
MySql/MariaDb, Postgresql, something else?

Also is your form in Writer or in Base?  Would it work better in Writer?
Regards from
Tom :)

Yes, Tim and I are not sure if this is a problem with LibreOffice or with

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Possible to write reports with relationship data?

2013-05-15 Thread David Karr
Let me give some example background to see if this can work.

Let's say we have an animals database, for someone maintaining an animal
shelter. Each animal has a list of medical care events and also a list
of adoptions (some animals return to the shelter). The
medicalCareEvents and adoptions tables each have a FK to the animals
table.

What I'm envisioning is a report that lists the fields for the animal,
followed by an indented section showing a row for each medical care event,
and another indented section showing adoptions for each animal.

A query could potentially use a join to create individual rows composed of
data from multiple tables, but that is really only practical for 1-1
relationships, or possibly 1-verysmallinteger relationships.

If you still think this can work, could you explain how this would be done?

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding here, but surely using a Query or a View
which pulls in the data from your 1-to-N tables, grouped as you want
them, as the basis for your report, would suffice ?

Ah! For an older laptop you might be best off not going for a desktop with
hotrod graphic effects at all. Install XFCE, or Lubuntu,

I hate both of them, so no, I won't do that mistake again. And my
laptop is not THAT old… And it worked perfectly with Ubuntu 10.10 with
desktop effects on (those I think I need, I didn't try all of them at
once…). I even had a lot of swimming fish inside the cube without any
problems… (that's not one of the effects I usually use though, I was
just testing). But since Ubuntu 12.04 (I went directly from 10.10 to
12.04 with a fresh install, only keeping my old home partition)I found
a lot of problems with Compiz, that I didn't experience previously.

 which is what I did
for an older (10 years old) Thinkpad. It works reasonably well. In the
long run, a desktop that you can modify cheaply is best on a limited
budget, from my perspective. The laptop is good enough to run Thunderbird
and Firefox (but not at once!) which suits me as I am rarely on the road
 anymore. :) Ric

I don't run Firefox nor Thunderbird, so I don't know much about that.
Okay, I run Firefox maybe once a week or so, but still…

 Johnny Rosenberg

I experimented a little and now I don't have any ”artifacts” anymore.
Yet… There are other problems now, though, but nothing as serious as
before, I think… I'll try this for a while and see what more I find…

I edited the nVidia settings a bit. After opening the nVidia X Server
Settings i checked X Screen 0 → Antialiasing Settings → ☒ Enable FXAA.
So far no ”artifacts”, but sometimes when I do Ctrl+Alt, windows
disappears and when they reappear they are empty (white). A click on
Maximize/Reset takes care of that, though…

I'll try the older driver (173) another day to see what happens.

Hi David,

No, I haven't gotten into that yet. I assume I can do some sort of looping
construct in writer that will allow me to step through rows in both the
main table and the relationships tables? Can I use Java or Javascript to
 do that iteration?

For iterative insertions of grouped data into a Writer document, the
mailmerge tool is often (ab)used :-) as the tool does this automatically
(well, it does, when it is working, which is LO version dependent ;-)).

If you base your mailmerge on a query (e.g. via a join) that fetches all
of your treatment entries for a given animal via the FK and orders them,
e.g. by date, then that should work.

What I haven't tried, is getting the results from two separate queries
into one single Writer documents, but in theory, this should work too. I
have been told, but again, not tried, that sections in documents can be
used to hold different queries, but I'm not sure whether the mailmerge
function would still work properly with this approach.

As I mentioned in a previous response, I'm really not sure about whether
you can insert two different query results at different places in a
single Writer (or Calc) document. My previous attempts over the years
all failed.

Ultimately, you might get further by using pyuno to create and
manipulate a Writer document, and insert the bits of data you want into
it. Again, the documentation here on how to engage in such an exercise
is sparse.

[libreoffice-users] How to unprotect readonly parts of a document?

2013-05-15 Thread Alan Stern
I'm having trouble with LibreOffice 3.6. A file I was given contains
regions that are readonly, and I can't figure out how to unprotect them
in order to edit them.

The usual advice in the archives is to use the Format - Sections menu
option. That doesn't work here; the Sections line in the Format menu
is grayed out. Other advice is to save the file in .odt format and
then open the result. That doesn't work either.

Attached to this email is a very short document (in .odt format)
exhibiting the problem. It's just one line of text saying:

Normal (9) Normal again.

The (9) region shows up in gray and can't be edited. Can anybody
help?

Thanks,

[libreoffice-users] Case function equivalent in Calc

2013-05-15 Thread Carl Paulsen
Anyone know if there is an equivalent to the Filemaker Pro Case
function? It's kinda like the IF function but is simpler to
concatenate multiple conditions. It basically says If something is true
then do what is specified, if the next thing is, then do that, if the
next thing is true, do that, etc.

Here's what I need to do. Take 4 columns and concatenate with a
semi-colon between the values, but not string together two semi-colons
consecutively. Like:

Phone Email Mail - Phone;Email;Mail
Phone Mail - Phone;Mail
   Mail - Mail
  EmailMail - Email;Mail

So semi-colons only occur if there's a value present and not at all if
there's only one value present.

I hope that makes sense and displays correctly.

Steven,
I am not sure I understand your question, so I may be offbase here (no

What you call requerying sounds like it may be the same as Refreshing in
Base Forms. Have you tried the Refresh icon(s)?
At the bottom of my forms, just about in the middle of the top toolbar,
there are two refresh icons. The left one looks like a rotating arrow
and has a Refresh help popup. The icon to the right of that icon
looks like a radio button and a rectangle with two rotating arrows,
one out of the radio button and one into the button. This icon has a
help popup of Refresh Control.

Whenever I change a table that a listbox is referring to, that change
does not immediately get reflected in my form's listbox entries. I must
click on the listbox (not the pulldown list, just highlight the listbox
control itself), then click on the Refresh Control icon. Then the
listbox should update. Clicking on the Refresh icon will refresh
(reload?) the entire database and restart you back to record #1 again,
as if you reopened the form. Refresh Control will just refresh the
control that is selected.

Hope this helps.

Indeed I would agree that this probably doesn't belong on dev channel -
there we discuss code not how to's or feature requests.

I actually would have just recommended the user list :) If that fails, the
OOo forum is good, also our Ask site have some great contributors that know
quite a bit.

If it's a feature that you want I would recommend reporting a bug and
marking it as an enhancement request:

Maybe just rephrasing the question and making a new thread where you say
how do I might get some good responses from people who use Database

It depends upon how you design the form and what information is
contained in the listbox and the records.
I have a form that contains a table. I also have a couple queries
based upon the contents of that table. When I change the contents and
refresh the table, the queries automatically refresh as well. For the
queries, I use a table control rather than a control with a listbox.

concatenate multiple conditions. It basically says If something is
true then do what is specified, if the next thing is, then do that,
if the next thing is true, do that, etc.

Here's what I need to do. Take 4 columns and concatenate with a
semi-colon between the values, but not string together two
semi-colons consecutively. Like:

Phone Email Mail - Phone;Email;Mail
Phone Mail - Phone;Mail
   Mail - Mail
  EmailMail - Email;Mail

So semi-colons only occur if there's a value present and not at all
if there's only one value present.

I hope that makes sense and displays correctly.

I just checked the available functions in Calc. The Case
function does not appear among them. Case When is available in Base
database queries though.

Re: [libreoffice-users] deploy java macro with document

2013-05-15 Thread Andrew Douglas Pitonyak

Hi,

I'd like to deploy a compiled Java macro with an ODT document.

Can you do that? You can do this with JavaScript, but Java, really? I
had no idea.

According to
http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/DevGuide/Scripting/Writing_Macros:

If you want to deploy the macro to a document you need to place it in a
Scripts/java directory within the document zip file.

What does that mean exactly?

Oh, yuck, feels dangerous. I know that Mr. Davies commented on this, so
I will not expound on what he said, but, if you unzip your document and
then start manually creating things and then re-zip the file, that feels
rather arduous.

I can't help but wonder if there is a way to access the internal storage
structures directly do to this from a macro (which still would be ugly).

If you do make this work, I am interested to hear about it.

I tried the following:
I saved the ODT file within a subdir and placed my Java macro (and descriptor
file) within subdir/Scripts/java/MYJAVAMACRO.
If I load the document and go to Tools-Macros-Run macros, I can't see my Java macro
under the document tree.

What am I doing wrong?

Eventually I'd like to store my odt + java macros within a webdav directory so
that the dir structure would be something like this:
https://server.com/webdav/docs/doc1.odt
https://server.com/webdav/docs/Scripts/java/MYJAVAMACRO/parcel-descriptor.xml
https://server.com/webdav/docs/Scripts/java/MYJAVAMACRO/MYJAVAMACRO.jar

Clients would open the ODT files like this:

soffice -o https://server.com/webdav/docs/doc1.odt

I can't seem to load the Java macro in my webdav setup but I'd first like to see if I can
load it in my local setup.

Thanks,

Vieri

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Portable Writer changes my custom style?

It's difficult to tell without more information. But note that
character formatting and character style formatting can each override
the paragraph style you have applied. Try this: select the relevant
text and then go to Format | Default Formatting (or Ctrl+M). This
will remove local formatting and should leave you seeing the effects
of your paragraph style.

Note also that if you type immediately after some text with local
formatting, that formatting is replicated in the new text. Local
formatting can also be remembered even if you delete all the previous text.

I trust this helps.
