Re: [libreoffice-users] LO Base: MySQL or Mariadb ?

2014-02-10 Thread Jay Lozier

Hi,

MariaDB is compatible with MySQL, the MySQL connectors, and MySQL API
and is designed to be a drop-in replacement for MySQL. I have connected
to MariaDB using the LO provided MySQL connector on earlier versions of
LO. I have not done so with 4.1.X yet.

[libreoffice-users] Calc/Writer - Default for Font Colour button now a brown colour - bug or feature?

2014-02-10 Thread M Gillespie
Problem occured in both Calc and Writer in both version 4.0.4.2 and 4.1.4.2.

On program start-up the Font Colour button on the toolbar is set to a muddy
brown colour.

In the past is has been set to Automatic on program start up (which works much
better for me)

From 4.0.1.2:

I have the same issue when I open Writer.

Oweng suggested posting here to ask:

Does anyone have views on whether this is a bug or a feature.

Or is there a setting I've inadvertently changed that I can change back?

Cheers - Mary

For the life of me I can't figure how to connect the text to a shape. I have

You'll get what you're looking if you add the Fontwork *toolbutton* (not

 a. Tools Customize.
 b. In Toolbars page select the toolbar you want to add the button to

 c. In the new dialog, select the Format category, Fontwork command.

Yes, of course. Just draw a line by hand and associate (enter) the text
you want. While it is selected, call the Fontwork tool. There, do *not*
use the upper rounded shapes. Instead, use directly one of the four
tools just below to setup the text along the line you drew.
You should achieve what you're looking for.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Export PDF

2014-02-10 Thread Kracked_P_P---webmaster

Two other ways

1 - Try
FileExport
choose PDF for the format
Then work with the options to see what works for you.

2- Use an external PDF printer

doPDF for Windows [free]
CUPS-PDF for Linux.

Those PDF printers have some good things and bad things. CUPS-PDF will
only print as Portrait so Landscape is viewed sideways. IT is meant to
keep the paper/image as it would be as a physical printer, which is
Portrait paper feeding.

SO if Export to PDF is causing problems, then try #1 and if that does
not help, add the external PDF printers.

Works for me. My default printer on Ubuntu is CUPS_PDF and on Windows
is doPDF.

C. ID number

Sheet 2 has three columns as follows:

How do I get the formula to apply properly to every row?

What should the initial formula look like?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Calc: help with VLOOKUP

2014-02-10 Thread Dave Liesse
The first problem I see is that your lookup value -- in this case the ID
number -- has to be the first column in the lookup array.

Using your specific example, the VLOOKUP function would be used in
column E of Sheet 2. If you were wanting to also copy the price from
Sheet 1 (which you've said you're not), you would need another VLOOKUP
in Column F.

This can be set up in advance, but you'll need to use an exact lookup
unless you know you exact lookup range ahead of time (in which case you
don't need to worry about searching an empty area).

I know this didn't answer all your questions, but others will chime in.

Dave

I had a 26 page file of 61 KB. I saved the file. When I went to open it
again, the first page was blank, the second page was there, and the third

My computer shows that the file is still there and is 61KB.

Is the file hiding somewhere? Is there anything I can do to recover it?

I am using Libreoffice ver. 4.1.4.2 and Windows 7-64bit.

Thanks.

Dave Liesse has written on 2/10/2014 4:00 PM:
The first problem I see is that your lookup value -- in this case the ID
number -- has to be the first column in the lookup array.

Interesting. I don't think I've ever seen that stated.

Using your specific example, the VLOOKUP function would be used in
 column E of Sheet 2.

So I type the VLOOKUP into a cell in E. Where do I enter the ID code?

This can be set up in advance, but you'll need to use an exact lookup
unless you know you exact lookup range ahead of time (in which case you
don't need to worry about searching an empty area).

??? Is there a problem if I overstate the size of the lookup area???

Thanks.

  C. ID number

Sheet 2 has three columns as follows:
  A. Item Code
  B. Item description
  C. Minimum bid (ignorable as far as this example is concerned)

The operator will be given a piece of paper with an Item code, an ID
number and a price. I would like him to be able to look up an Item code
in Sheet 2 and then, in that row, enter the ID number (column D?). A
VLOOKUP formula would paste the Name into an available column (E?) and
the operator would enter the price into the next column (F?).

Where do I type the =VLOOKUP formula?

Can I save the sheet with the formula so I can set this strategy up
 ahead of time?

How do I get the formula to apply properly to every row?

What should the initial formula look like?

 Thank you.

 Jean-Francois

Tried that and somehow I'm missing something important. I draw a line using
the Freeform Line tool from the Draw toolbar. I then use the text tool from
the Draw toolbar to enter text. When I enter the text the Fontwork window
opens. I then choose one of the 4 tools you suggest and the text follows the
contour of the text box. The line is totally ignored. If I select the line
the Fontworks tool is grayed out and unavailable.

This takes me back to the same problem as I had initially, how do I get the
text to be associated with the line. Writer will not let me select both the
text box and the line at the same time. Could you give me a detailed step by
step what works on your system? Thanks.

Yes, Python2 remains the default because many important projects did not

Re: [libreoffice-users] Calc: help with VLOOKUP

2014-02-10 Thread Carl Paulsen
OK, the item that you want to look up to return the price or name needs
to be in both spreadsheets (otherwise you won't find a match!). IF (big
IF here) the ID# and item code are the same for each item, then this
could be done as follows:

Database looks like this:
Sheet 1:
ID NamePrice ID
1 Shirt 6 1
2 Pants 5 2
3 Hat 3 3
4 Gloves 2 4

Sheet 2:
CodeDescription Min. Bid
3 ;lkajsdfk ;aljsdf 2
3 ;lkjdf 2
4 ;akldjf ;laksf ;alskdfj 1
2 oisel 3
1 ;lakjsdf4
1 woe 4
4 ldklw 1

(Gibberish was intentional. I didn't want to bother with actual
descriptions.) In this case, take the code you're given (3 in the first
line, sheet 2) and look up the value in sheet 1 (in this case it would
be Hat). To do this:

Sheet 2, add the following column in D: =VLOOKUP(A2,Sheet1.$A$1:$D$5,2,0)
copy and paste this formula as far down the sheet as you need to.
Note the dollar symbol is needed to create a static reference to the
array that you are looking at for the lookup. Otherwise it starts at
the row you're looking at and goes down from there, meaning eventually
you'll almost certainly NOT find a match. The lookup value (A2 in the
first cell of D2) will change for each row the formula is pasted into.

Final sheet 2 would look like this:

CodeDescription Min. BidItem Name
3 ;lkajsdfk ;aljsdf 2 Hat
3 ;lkjdf 2 Hat
4 ;akldjf ;laksf ;alskdfj 1 Gloves
2 oisel 3 Pants
1 ;lakjsdf4 Shirt
1 woe 4 Shirt
4 ldklw 1 Gloves

In Column D, you would see the item name returned, but the actual
contents of that column would be the formula above, with the first part
after the vlookup (A2) changing with each row from A2 to A3, A4, A5, A6,
A7 and A8. What this does is looks up whatever is in A1 and returns the
name based on what it matches for ID in sheet 1.

Read carefully and I think you'll eventually get it. It can be
confusing, but it makes sense if you're careful to follow the logic.

Now, after the 7 lines of sample data above, I copied and pasted the
vlookup formula into the rest of Column D (as far as you think you need
to go). That's the setup. After that, when a number (from 1-4 for the
item ID in sheet 1) is typed into column A, an item name is returned in
Column D. I typed a bunch of numbers into Column A to illustrate
below. See:

CodeDescription Min. BidItem Name
3 ;lkajsdfk ;aljsdf 2 Hat
3 ;lkjdf 2 Hat
4 ;akldjf ;laksf ;alskdfj 1 Gloves
2 oisel 3 Pants
1 ;lakjsdf4 Shirt
1 woe 4 Shirt
4 ldklw 1 Gloves
3

Hat
4

Gloves
4

Gloves

Gloves
1

Shirt
1

Shirt
2

Pants
2

Pants
2

Pants

#N/A

#N/A

#N/A

#N/A

#N/A

Note that the #N/A values in Column D are columns for which no code
has been entered yet. The formula can't return a value since there's
nothing in the lookup column A. Also note that we didn't try to lookup
the Description for Column B (that data doesn't exist in Sheet 1 so it
wouldn't work anyway). We also didn't try to look up the price (column
C of sheet 1) but could have done that with a new lookup formula in a
column E in sheet 2.

I hope this makes sense. I can send you the sample I created (or post
to Nabble if I can get the time to do this...). Let me know if you want
me to send you the sample file directly (I won't do so until I hear from
you). If others want to see it too, let me know and I'll just post to
Nabble (I don't think I have an account yet, but will figure it out).

That is why having a backup copy option and a auto save for recovery is
needed.
I think every time you open or save the document, you might get a backup
copy [or maybe not]. You will have to check the documentation to know
for sure.

I have had a few system crashes, yes for both Windows and Linux, where
the auto-save saved a lot of work from being retype in. Having a back
copy of important files for each level of changes may be as important to
many as it is to have a backup of all of your files [i.e. an external
set of backup drives].

Re: [libreoffice-users] Part of File is Missing

2014-02-10 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I've no idea why it happened. I don't think anyone else has reported
anything similar yet. Generally it's worth keeping back-ups whatever
program you are using.

I tend to add a version number to the end of files and occasionally
increase that number so that i can always go back to an earlier
version (just in case i stuff up or need something from an earlier
version). I try to keep it simple so i get file-names such as
Diwali-Poster-2013-v1
Diwali-Poster-2013-v2
Also i tend to keep artwork, logos, and old versions in a sub-folder
near the document jic everything goes horribly wrong. Occasionally i
go through and just delete all those sub-folders (sometimes quickly
checking through them first jic there is something interesting lurking
away in there (but my OS makes that really easy))

Tim (Kracked Press) idea of doing such frequent saves and back-ups
doesn't suit me at all! If i set the option it's for around 20-30
mins or even longer but usually i try to switch that off and just
remember to do my own frequent saves. We are all different though and
what suits me doesn't suit everyone! Diversity breeds serendipity.

Regards from
Tom :)

Is the file hiding somewhere? Is there anything I can do to recover it?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Part of File is Missing

2014-02-10 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Which format was the file saved in? Do you know if it's .docX, .doc
or .Odt? Can you upload the file to Nabble? (errr, is it
confidential such as containing people's names and addresses (in which
case DONT post it!))
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/nabble-mailing-list-interface/
Find the correct thread, reply to any message and notice the buttons
above where you are supposed to type. The More button allows you to
upload file and that injects a bit of html code into the message. You
can move the html code around a bit if you like and even edit it if
you know html already. Usually the default way it does it is good
enough so it's worth keeping as is.

Do you have a back-up copy somewhere, perhaps an auto-backup? Is the
file saved on a local network and accessed on the local Win7 machine?
Do you have another version, perhaps a slightly earlier version on a
usb-stick or emailed to someone/yourself, on a Cd/dvd or up on
Facebook or CLoud or somewhere?

What happens if you try to select all the apparently non-existant
text? Is it just the font colour changed to match the background?
Regards from
Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Python2 and Uno on Ubuntu 13.10

Reviewing the archive, I did not see if it was solved. I believe Ubuntu

easiest way to check is to enter python in terminal and see which

Python3 is available in the Ubuntu repositories.

Yes, Python2 remains the default because many important projects did not
yet migrate from 2 to 3.

Maybe I was not clear: I need to run Appy POD which requires Uno and
Python 2 (not 3), and according to
http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/msg35255.html it seems
that this is not possible on Ubuntu 13.10 (in a reasonably easy way).

For the moment I am still on Ubuntu 13.10, everything works very well
except for this little detail. But this little detail is a serious
problem for me, and it might force me to go back to a previous version
of Ubuntu.

I could not find out whether the problem is rather in LibreOffice or
rather in Ubuntu, but I posted this here because the mentioned thread
indicates that here are people who know about it, and I hope for help or
hints to solve this problem.

Luc

According to https://pypi.python.org/pypi/appy.pod is written in Python
2.4. AFAIK, is should run on the Python 2.7.5 interpreter correctly
which is installed on Ubuntu. The only issue I see with the older
version of Python is the possibility of features deleted in Python 2.7.5
being used by appy.pod. I would check with www.python.org to see if
there are any issues.

Nope. You select the line and hit F2, so that the text box associated
with the line opens, then you enter the text :)
I guess I didn't make me clear enough. Perhaps the verb associated is
not the right one...

This takes me back to the same problem as I had initially, how do I get the
text to be associated with the line. Writer will not let me select both the
text box and the line at the same time. Could you give me a detailed step by
step what works on your system? Thanks.

see above.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Export PDF

2014-02-10 Thread r_ouellette
I create pdf files since 1997 and I tried almost every possible way to do so
(Linux or Windows softwares). LO does one of the best job!

If you want really small and efficient pdf, do the following :

Menu Tools Options Fonts

and add these 3 substitutions (even if you don't have these fonts installed
on your PC):

Arial  Helvetica
Courier New  Courier
Times  Times New Roman

and check « Allways » in front of each substitution.

This way you will use the always included 35 Type1 Adobe fonts that every
pdf reader provides and uses. True, Times is not Times New Roman but closely
related. You can do, of course, the sames substitutions with the equivalent
Liberation fonts too, so Liberation Sans Helvetica... etc. The Type1 fonts
to use are Helvetica, Courier and Times.

Try to create a pdf with these substitutions on and with substitutions off,
you'll be surprised how small your pdf can be when the ttf fonts are not
embeded. Don't forget that the substitutions are not possible if you embed
the ODF document in the pdf (hybrid pdf) because all fonts are then
embedded.

This is another option that should appear by default, with the « always »
choice unchecked but visible to give the user a real choice.

Hi everyone

FYI

Details of recovery of a previous version of a single file from Restore Points
or Windows Backup in Windows 7:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/previous-versions-files-faq#1TC=windows-7

I realise this may not solve your problem - I'm hoping others can help recover
the newest version of your file.

Hi :)
I think he is talking about some document-specific thing introduced in
Win7. I've not explored it yet. (Had no idea it existed tbh)

The Windows-wide restore should only affect programs but should leave
files and data untouched. of course what should be and what is are
often different but i've never had a problem with it the few times
i've used it.
