Could you please advise me if I can consequently uninstall Microsoft Works

Given that LibO currently has support for half a dozen programming
languages that can be used to write extensions, I doubt it will ever be
implemented.

_IF_ good coding practices were adhered to, when the macro was written,
and updated, then rewriting them in a language that LibO supports is
trivial.

OTOH, assuming the code is like 99.% of the code found in MSO
macros, it not only is undocumented, but a mess of spaghetti, of the
type that Richard Conway condemned back in 1978.

In the latter instance, the only migration path is to start with the
requirements, as _currently_ used, and go from there.

You do it different in LibO:
For cutpaste:
(1) Mark the row or column to move.
(2) Hold down the Alt-key and drag. You will notice a bold horizontal
line. If you have marked a whole row or column, do not try to use the
header, but use a cell.
(3) Drop when the line is there, where you want to insert the row or
column.

For copypaste hold down Alt-Key and Ctrl-Key.

Thank you very much for this method.
It allows to overcome missing insert cut cell feature (paste special
do not replace it as it leaves unneeded empty cells).
But is was hard to understand - when dragging multiple lines insert
position depends on which line was dragged - if I drag first line
everything OK but if I drag second line, block inserts above line that
is above cursor itself - and it looks odd.

Cut behavior of LO itsef is semi-microsoft, semi-classic - data is gone
to clipboard disappearing from sheet, but flowing rectangle around empty
cells remains on screen for unclear purpose (in MS Office it means that
data is cut, what it means in LO I cannot guess).

Re: [libreoffice-users] LO (writer, esp.) and alternative keyboard layouts

2015-02-09 Thread Simos Xenitellis

On 6 February 2015 at 10:11, Gary Collins gcatl...@yahoo.co.uk wrote:
 Hi,
I've been having some trouble lately using in Writer especially when using
alternative keyboard mappings (Windows 7). Yesterday, for example, I was
using a mapping that was basically English but which included macron vowels
(that's vowels with a bar over the top, used, e.g., to indicate a long vowel
in works of reference for Latin). I found that the assigned key combination -
in this case, AltGr+vowel - was giving me a vowel with something like an
acute accent over it instead of a bar - though the key combination was
working OK in other applications, e.g. WordPad and even the humble NotePad.It
did start to work, however; but in order to get it to do so, I had to set the
keyboard in the language bar whilst the LO document was active. Is this the
expected behaviour? Should LO override the locale settings in cases like
 this? (wondering).

When you type characters with diacritics, you can get either a
precomposed character or a character with diacritics. It depends
on the keyboard layout that is active at the moment.
For Windows and the default Latin/Greek keyboard layouts, you get
precomposed characters. These are single Unicode characters that show
the letter with any accents/diacritics drawn on it. They look really
well, because the font designer had to draw them with the diacritics
on top.
The Unicode standard stopped accepting those precomposed characters
into the standard about 15 years ago because you had to have all
combinations of letters with accents into the standard.
The keyboard layouts for Latin and Greek produce precomposed
characters. For some exotic Latin scripts, there are no precomposed
characters, so they use diacritics.

ALPHA with TONOS: ά (precomposed, it's a single character)
ALPHA with TONOS: ά (with diacritic, it's actually two characters!)

I have an impression you are hitting some issue with the above two
different ways to represent characters with accents/diacritics.

Again, whilst using the polytonic Greek keyboard, I have noticed that from
time to time the key combinations required to obtain some of the special
characters stop working - that is, the key presses appear to be detected,
but they stop having the desired effect. An example: to obtain an alpha with
a rough breathing, acute accent and iota subscript, I would have to first
press the combination altGr + shift + '/', release those keys, and then
press 'a' (for alpha). It's the altGr + shift combination that stops
working here; when I press 'a' I get an alpha alright, but without the
special diacritics (I think that's the right word).Using a combination
without shift and/or altGr still works; e.g. I can press (and release)
'/' and then press 'a' and get an alpha with smooth breathing and acute,
 which is the expected behaviour.

When you press AltGr+Shift+/, you are instructing the operating system
that you are typing a dead key; nothing appears on the screen but if
the next character is a certain one defined in the keyboard layout,
then you will get that letter with the desired accent(s).
I would have to first press the combination altGr + shift + '/',
release those keys, and then press 'a' (for alpha) is indeed the
proper way to hit the dead key, and then hit the letter.
If you do not hit the appropriate letter, then the dead key is
dropped/cancelled so that you can continue typing.
In Windows you can type up to one dead key and then a letter.

I've no idea why this sometimes goes awry; the focus does not leave the
document in question, and I haven't noticed a consistent combination of
keystrokes/actions preceding the cessation of functionality. Similarly, I
haven't found a consistent way to restore it - I can generally do so,
eventually, but it seems to require different steps each time; such steps
might include changing the keyboard from polytonic Greek to English and back
again, using the language button on the desktop toolbar and/or using my
assigned key combinations (in case these are significant, I use ctrl + alt
+ 1 to change to the polytonic Greek and ctrl + alt + 0 to change to the
 English layout; Left Alt + Shift changes between languages (default));
clicking an empty area of the desktop to lose the focus from Writer; giving
the focus to a different document; and so on.

Any idea what I might be doing to cause LO Writer to go awry (prevention is
better than cure)? Or the reason why it might be going wrong? Or if there
is, in fact, a consistent way to restore it (but I just haven't found it
 yet)?

LO Writer should work without issues. I use it on Ubuntu and I could
not get such a problem.

One cause could be the keyboard layout in Windows sending (sometimes?)
diacritic characters.
You may mistype some of the dead keys, and they produce diacritics
into the document.
Sounds improbable, but it's the only thing I have in mind.

I like it when a few different people all give basically the same

I vaguely remember this question being asked about 4 years ago and

I don't know of a simple way, but if you unzip an ODF document (it's a
zip archive) you will find it contains a number of XML files, and each
of those has something like

office:version=1.2

It identifies my files as version 1.2 with a LOT of errors. Even a clean
file with 2 words. Possibly because I have 1.2 Extended set in LO options.
Using Brian's technique (Dolphin browses zip files like a directory) my
1.2 extended files have version=1.2. So possibly my problem arises
from mixing sub-versions of 1.2.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Remove Strikethrough - Libre Writer

2015-02-09 Thread Tom Davies
 Hi :)
Did Marianne-x actually help there? Sometimes people don't notice
answers when they are written at the bottom of a post but in
OpenSource mailing lists people are usually told to post at the bottom
rather than at the top of emails.

I figured that maybe the file is read-only and needs to be saved under
a new name = i tend to add -v1 at the end of files and then step-up
that number at the end in order to track which version is more recent.
It helps me keep back-ups and helps me return to a previous verion if
weird things happen.

For an entire document then it might be soemthign to do with styles
being set wrongly. Most styles cascade so hopefully you only need to
modify one of them but i never know the hierarchy so you might need to
modify each individual style. Then getting the whole document to
apply the correct styles should fix it but that might take a bit of
figuring out.

I'm sure you have tried all sorts of complicated things and i am
struggling to think of something simple. All i can think of is that
you have to select the text that you want to apply changes too. You
might need to do chunks of text and the headings separately.
Regards from
Tom :)

Can anyone please share how you *remove* strikethrough from text on many
 pages?

Text is lined through on many pages and I want to remove it.

If I choose FormatFontFont Effects I can see it but it doesn't remove
 it.

If I right click on it I can apply it but not remove it.

Could yo also please e-mail me directly?

 Thank you.

It's easy enough here, with Curtains 7 and LO 4.0.6.2 (portable).

Select the afflicted text, then, as you mostly indicate, FORMAT - CHARACTER
 - FONT EFFECTS and then choose WITHOUT from the strikethrough drop-down
 menu.

That removes previously applied strike-throughs for me.

Thanks so much to all who replied to my requests for help on this — especially
Alex, who filed several comments on this with Bug 80680 (and probably others)
relating to this issue.

Installing LO 4.5 is not easy, because it’s still in the early stages of development.
I finally found in from the LO Dowloands Page - Download: Development versions - Nightly
Builds: Access the Nightly builds server here - Master - MacOSX-10.10@61/ -
2015-02-05 00:36:56 (most recent date) - *_x86-64.dmg.

  Before installing LO 4.5, I tried 4.3.4.1, 4.3.6.1, and 4.4.0.2, all
of which failed under OS X 10.10.1. I started with 4.3.4.1, because that
version worked for me under Windows 7. Unfortunately, it didn’t work for me
under OS X.

The fix for https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80370
Other: Crash when opening solver will be included in 4.4.1 and 4.3.7
(though we'll likely miss 4.3.6).

I don't know of a simple way, but if you unzip an ODF document (it's
a zip archive) you will find it contains a number of XML files, and
each of those has something like

office:version=1.2
in the preamble to the file.

Depending on your operating system and installed software, you may be
able to change the document file's extension to .zip and double-click
it in order to reveal its contents.

I trust this helps.

Yes, you can install LibreOffice and then uninstall Works at your
convenience.

Please ensure you download only from www.libreoffice.org or one of it's
mirrors. Getting it from elsewhere may install some malware on your
computer.

Re: [libreoffice-users] When will LO have MS macro and function support?

2015-02-09 Thread Andrew Douglas Pitonyak

Or this is something that it's not worth it to do in LibreOffice?

IMHO if LibreOffice would have 100% MS compability for macros and functions
too, then... nothing would stand against LibreOffice to conquer the Office
world.

Thanks.

Although I agree that this would be great, it is not possible. Things
are hampered in that LO supported things that MSO does not, and MSO
supports things that LO does not. The moment you have an MSO macro that
exploits a capability not supported by LO, things fail.; for example,
the difference between a character highlight and a character background.
How do you attempt to map this for 100% compatibility if it is not
supported in LO. Sure, I am picking at nits here, but, I think that the
most important take away in this regard is that even if we do a really
good job, if we happen to miss that one thing that you need...

Even if we were only looking to say hit 80% compatible by emulating the
objects and behavior in that way (and I suspect that it may not even be
possible given how some of the VBA macros function), that still leaves
20% of the stuff that might fail. And then, if your macro uses .NET
libraries and things not available on non Windows platforms, those will
not work unless the entire .NET stuff is supported.

Off hand, I would say that this is a low priority for the majority of
the users (in other words, there exist things that the majority would
put as a higher priority such as improved OOXML support).

Understand that this is a really hard task, which would require
significant investment in time and money. The end result would still not
provide 100% compatibility.

So, I don't really expect it.
