Re: [libreoffice-users] Pasting data from LO Calc to BricsCAD

2017-07-11 Thread Bruce Hohl
You might try this:
Tools > Options > Calc > View then Under "Display" set X = Formulas
Now perform the copy and paste.

Or you can save the Calc sheet as a CSV with formulas.
File > Save As (select Text CSV) and set X = Edit filter settings
In the next pop-up set X = Save cell formulas instead of calculated values

Re: [libreoffice-users] Fwd: + session of Calc: everything scares frightfully.

2017-07-10 Thread Bruce Hohl
By "rebuild" I mean that the worksheet is manually recreated starting with
a blank worksheet. As much as practical enter again formulas. Data can be
copied from the original worksheet but use "Edit > Paste Special as Text,
Numbers or Date & time". Add needed formatting to the new worksheet (do
not copy formatting from the old worksheet). There is no guarantee this
will solve the problem. Consider this to be a test. Be happy if this
works!

Re: [libreoffice-users] Fwd: + session of Calc: everything scares frightfully.

2017-07-10 Thread Bruce Hohl
Just a few general comments:

LibreOffice is a relative large desktop application so if you have a low
resource computer (old or very low cost) performance will be slower with
more open worksheets.

Performance is affected by the "size" of each worksheet. "Size" somewhat
difficult to measure but more cells used, more formulas used and more
formatting used affect performance.

I have a few large worksheets for which I uncheck "Menu > Data >
AutoCalculate". I must then press F9 to update the formulas.

Several times on this mailing list people have reported slow performance
related to cell formatting. Some worksheets converted from Excel include
formatting "baggage" which can slow performance. Sometimes I rebuild these
worksheets in LibreOffice to leave this "baggage" behind.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Creating a custom label problem

2017-06-25 Thread Bruce Hohl
If you go to the Avery.com site and create an account you can use their
online label tool. It's fairly easy to use and allows you to save your
"projects" for future use. I printed the result to PDF and used the PDF to
create labels as needed. It's helpful to have access to a high end printer
(like at work) which can feed the label stock more precisely than the
inexpensive printers typically used at home.

 HI,

You are right. The fields for user-defined layouts seem to adjust
themselves randomly (looks like a validation problem where the value
that is entered is validated before the cursor leaves the field). The
only way I was able to create something that looks like what you are
 looking for is to:

 1) Create an empty document.
 2) Adjust the page margins to match the cutout locations of your Avery
label sheet (Format -> Page -> Page).
 3) Insert a 1 row/4 column table that has no headers and no borders; if
your margins are correctly set, the table should now occupy the full
usable width of the page and each cell should be of the correct width.
 4) Adjust the height of your row by right-clicking in a cell and
selecting "Size" -> Row Height. Set it to 0.67 inch.
 5) Once this is done, go to the rightmost cell and insert a new row by
hitting TAB (the new row will be of the same height as the first one).
Do this until you have the correct number of rows on your page.

You may need to play with the Spacing to Content (Table -> Properties
-> Borders) of the cells to position the text inside the cells so it
stays clear of the cutout lines.

Not fantasticly user friendly but it should do the job.

 I hope this helps.

 Rémy Gauthier.

Re: [libreoffice-users] saving as csv newline inserted

2017-06-21 Thread Bruce Hohl
It appears that the actual contents of Field2 = 05329954A\n where '\n' is a
RETURN (not a TAB). I was able to remove the \n by (1) select/highlight
the column containing Field2, (2) open Data > Text to Columns, (3) Under
'Separator Options' set Y=Separated by, Y=Other as \n then click 'OK'. Now
save as CSV.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Libre Writer - special characters

2017-05-06 Thread Bruce Hohl
The hexidecimal unicodes can also be used in Windows with a registry edit:
Add HKEY_Current_User/Control Panel/Input Method, set EnableHexNumpad to
"1"
If adding use New > String Value, Type = REG_SZ.

After the registry change
Press & hold Alt; Press '+' on number pad; enter code; release Alt.

Probably a web search would provide a better explanation.
The main thing is that the same codes can be used on both platforms.

[libreoffice-users] Wanted: KB shortcut to Calc Name Box

2017-03-17 Thread Bruce Hohl
In Calc I would like to set F3 as a KB shortcut which moves the focus to
the "Name Box" (1st control on formula bar). This would provide navigation
equivalent to a 'go to cell' command which would be useful for my very
large spreadsheets (without having to reach for the mouse). I don't see an
option for that under Tools > Customize > Keyboard. Does anyone know if
such a KB shortcut can be set?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Printing selected text to PDF

In 5.2.x File > Export as PDF then click the "Selection" radio button.
This will print selected cells or selected sheets. For 5.3.x the wording
might be slightly different and this might become the default. See:

Re: [libreoffice-users] Default font in LO calc

I can always open a new spreadsheet equipped with Arial by selecting File >
New > Templates > spreadsheet tab > My Templates > select the template >

to do File

You can use:
Ctrl+Shift+n to open the Templates window.
Then double click the desired template.

To the right of 'Properties' there is a drop down icon which if you

Just for clarification, if you create a new spreadsheet file and delete
cells in the same manner does Calc crash? (I.E. is the crash specific to
that operation in that particular file or occurs with any file.)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Question on wildcards

2017-02-06 Thread Bruce Hohl
For more compactness, maybe you could create a maxifs() pointed to each
sheet then a maxifs() against those maxifs() results. I agree with Brian
on the point of keeping all data in one sheet if practical. With that
approach it's still possible to have separate tabs for each year for the
analysis and calculation.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Verified fatal error

2017-02-05 Thread Bruce Hohl
This is not really an answer but ... sometimes I have a problem with my
Windows PC at work, and the IT person confirms the problem, but trouble
shooting the problem will take longer than reinstalling ... so by analogy I
suggest you rebuild the spreadsheet starting with File > New >
Spreadsheet. Bring all you data and formulas into the new spreadsheet by
Edit > Paste Special without Formats or Objects. Better yet just Paste
Special "Values" (Text, Numbers, Date & Time) and recreate the formulas.
Copy & Paste Special selected blocks of cell never entire columns.
Recreate ALL formatting in the new spreadsheet. End by saving in ODS
format. I know this might seem like overkill but sometimes particular
spreadsheets "acquire" unique problems which are most easily resolved with
a rebuild (reinstall). Consider it an opportunity to improve the worksheet
with better functions available more clear layout & formatting.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Help with applying filters please.

2017-01-31 Thread Bruce Hohl
Another way to keep unwanted columns or rows from printing is to Group
those columns or rows (Data > Group and Outline > Group) . Before printing
use the "Minus" icon to collapse. After printing use the "Plus" sign to
expand. This method provides a fast clickable control which is also a
vise-able reminder of the Group when collapsed.

[libreoffice-users] Calc Selection Count in v5302 Win

2017-01-24 Thread Bruce Hohl
Hello All,
I installed version 5.3.0.2 / Win64 this morning but found that in Calc the
Selection Count option in the status bar did not work (nothing displayed).
If anyone has this version installed please check this and reply. If
confirmed, I will add a bug report. I use selection count frequently so I
went back to version 5.2.5.1 where this feature is working.

fudmer,
You can find LibreOffice documentation and help sites from the links on
this page: http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/community-support/ A
modern Office Suite like LO has a huge number of features but you need only
study and understand the features needed for their requirements.

fudmer,
The copy and paste results you experienced are likely due to the formula
"anchoring" feature which can be set under "Sheet > Relative/Absolute
References" or pressing the F4 key. Try "un-anchoring" or setting cells to
"Relative References" (no "$" in the formulas) before copy & paste.

Absolute references ($'s) can be set for the row, column and /or sheet in a
formula. This impacts the results of copy and paste within a sheet,
between sheets and between files / workbooks. This feature can be quite
useful but is a bit hard to explain so search the LibreOffice help for
"relative addresses" for more information and do some tests to see how it
works.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: How do I install the current Linux version

2016-11-01 Thread Bruce Hohl
Those PPA's work fine with Mint. You can also select another version, for
example 5-2. This method will replace your current version. Updates to
your selected version (5.1.x or 5.2.x, etc) are provided through the
package system. This is more convenient versus manually downloading and
installing each new version. This link describes these PPAs:
https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

For that approach to work you must hide (or group) the unwanted columns AND
clear the multiple print ranges.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Help Please with Printing Ranges

2016-10-26 Thread Bruce Hohl
Well ... Calc is "adding" vertical page breaks between each of your defined
ranges ... I did not expect that. Due to this instead of using a Print
Range I suggest that you group or hide columns D-H and J. I prefer to
group: Data > Group & Outline > Group as it provides check boxes above row
1. You will need to clear the defined print range.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Libra Office and MS Word compatibility query

"with no glitches"

I think this can only be achieved if everyone can agree to only use a
specified file format (.doc, .docx, .rtf) and only [basic] features known
to work the same in both programs. Perhaps one of the many online [basic]
word processors would be a better fit this situation.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Strange pdf printout in Calc vs. Excel

2016-10-14 Thread Bruce Hohl

Actually, I did not notice that. I recently added myself to the CC list for
that bug as I agree that more control over PDF output from Calc would be
nice.

> ... Printing button is right beside this. Here you could print in a file and
the default here is pdf and selected sheet.
If I choose File > Print (Ctrl+P); then set "Printer" = "Print to File
..."; then click the "Pint to File..." button. The "Save As" window
appears. The only "Save as type" available is *.PRN. Thus, it does not
appear that a PDF can be produced from Ctrl+P. (Unless an 'PDF Printer' has
been separately installed on the computer.)

> And there will be not much people, who only want to export the selected
page.
My spreadsheets typically include one or more sheets for data and analysis
and a single summary sheet. I typically only distribute the summary sheet
in PDF format. Thus, from my perspective it would be nice if the Calc
default for PDF creation was the same as for printing (Selected sheets) or
the PDF Export default could be configured in Options or under Expert
Configuration.

I agree the default of printing the entire workbook is generally unwelcome.

Yes, to 'AND' setup your Advanced filter range like this:
date | check no | check no |
| >=1000   | <=1100   |

If you install the LO help there is good explanation and example of using
Advanced Filters.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Get number of items in a calc's sheet filtered list

2016-09-24 Thread Bruce Hohl
Make sure "View > Status Bar" is checked. That information is displayed in
the second part of the status bar at the bottom of Calc but only when the
focus is within the range of data being filtered. At the bottom you will
then see something like: | Sheet 3 of 4 | 55 of 1425 records found | etc.

Re: [libreoffice-users] trouble installing fonts to use with Libre Office

You may be able to find (and install) desired fonts from the Synaptic
Package Manager. After opening the Synaptic Package Manager, on the left
panel there are entries for Fonts, Fonts (multi-verse) and Fonts

Re: [libreoffice-users] Fwd: Looking for expert help

2016-08-29 Thread Bruce Hohl
I totally agree with Joe's comment. LO including Calc has an excellent PDF
export feature with many options (review the various tabs at File > Export
to PDF). Also, print ranges can be set by Tab/Sheet, cells set as
non-printable and Headers & Footers can be used to identify content, page
numbering, etc. In fact, I use this capability routinely to prepare
professional quality PDF versions of financial reports. It's much easier
for "top managers" to page through a PDF versus the "complex" navigation
required by a spreadsheet.

... and if your get carried away you can help toki with his "Abusing Calc"
users guide. He plans 2 chapters on using Calc as a text editor :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] libreoffice base: building query, need help with input parameter development

2016-08-28 Thread Bruce Hohl
On form Form_Filter, is it possible to define the List Box using General -
List Entries and Data - ValuelList (without using the separate table Filter
and query Query_Filter)? The Base Handbook has brief comments on the List
Entries & ValueList but only defining those items does not produce a
working List Box.

Re: [libreoffice-users] libreoffice base: building query, need help with input parameter development

2016-08-27 Thread Bruce Hohl
> What would I need to write as a criteria so that when the QUERY is run, it
prompts the user to select from a listbox

You must create a form to use the List Box control. If you really only
need a query you can add the choices to the query parameter name. For
example: SELECT "F1", "F2" FROM "Table1" WHERE "F1" =
:enter_dog_cat_or_bird (see simple attached example).

From the installed help see: Contents > Database Functionality > General
Information > Working with Queries (Query Design / Parameter queries) and
Working with Forms (Form Controls / List Box).

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Time Calculations in LOBase

2016-08-25 Thread Bruce Hohl
I can confirm as follows.

With this in table1:
ID time1 time2
1 01/01/16 11:30 PM 01/02/16 04:00 AM
2 01/02/16 01:30 AM 01/02/16 05:30 AM
This query:
SELECT "time1", "time2", DATEDIFF( 'minute', "time1", "time2" ) AS
"diff_minutes", DATEDIFF( 'minute', "time1", "time2" ) / 60.00 AS
"diff_hours" FROM "Table1"

Returns:
time1 time2 diff_minutes diff_hours
01/01/16 11:30 PM 01/02/16 04:00 AM 270 4.5
01/02/16 01:30 AM 01/02/16 05:30 AM 240 4

Many thanks. I hate to see regressions. And, since they can be used almost
entirely from the keyboard, I still prefer the multi-tabbed windows like
Format > Cells, Format > Page, Format > Character, Format > Paragraph, etc.
over all the other methods: tool bars, sidebars, ribbons :(

[libreoffice-users] Need someone to check a 5.2.x regression

2016-08-19 Thread Bruce Hohl
Hi All,
I installed 5.2.x on a Windows 7 and Linux from
ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-5-2.
In both cases the Format > Cells > Background > 'No Fill' did not work
correctly per this bug report:
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=101588 However, another
tester did not find the problem on Windows 10. If you have 5.2.x install
can you please check this:

To reproduce:
1 - Add background color to cell A1 and A3 but not cell A2.
2 - Select cells A1:A3
3 - Format > Cells > Background tab, Click 'No Fill', Click 'OK'.
Cell background colors are not removed.
This works in 5.1.x versions.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Line spacing on Writer

Go to "View > Non-Printer Characters". This will show the paragraph
breaks, etc.
Position the cursor within a paragraph or select (highlight) desired
paragraphs.
Open "Format > Paragraph" and go to the "Indents & Spacing Tab".
You can view and change spacing setting here.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Compatibility of LO Base with Access databases

2016-08-03 Thread Bruce Hohl
Base and some of its limitations (including enbedded HSQLDB) are well
described here:
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/FAQ_(Base)

The last two times I needed a multi user database accessible over the web I
went with a LAMP approach. The *upfront* set up and learning curve was
higher but *less* time is required over the life of the project
(development & maintenance) as these tools have exceptional stability and
performance, have very few bugs, excellent documentation and require no
client side maintenance. AND, it's far more rewarding developing the
application versus fighting the bugs and limitations of your tools ... as
often happens when using Access, Base and their like (been there, done
doing that).

If a new Base is created in LO 5.1.x it will be default is "HSQLDB
Embedded" to store the data.

> is it really necessary to have another database product to do database
work in LO Base?
Not necessarily, but this is a feature which allows Base to be used as
front end to another database. This might be done for various reasons like
(1) the other database already includes the needed data, (2) a concurrent
multi-user environment is wanted which is not available via HSQLDB embedded
but is possible with HSQL split , (3) a wanted feature is available in
another database but not in HSQL, (4) a preference for another database,
Etc. Reference this: https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/FAQ_(Base)

features in 'inconvenient' menu locations. You can also save these

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Alt Key

2016-07-03 Thread Bruce Hohl
Thanks for the info and the links, two observations:

(1) The Windows behaviour of pressing and releasing the Alt key to activate
the text menu is a more "accessible" default behaviour for those who cannot
or have difficulty with pressing keys simultaneously (versus the Linux
behaviour which requires Alt+).

(2) As LO is cross platform I think the idea of a LO setting for choosing
the preferred Alt key behaviour is a good idea so that users can work with
LO in a consistent fashion regardless of the OS/DE/Theme of computer being
used.

[libreoffice-users] Alt Key

On Linux pressing and holding the Alt key "activates" text menu (File,
Edit, View, etc). On Windows pressing then releasing the Alt key "actives"
the text menu. Does anyone know how to get Linux to behave like Windows for

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LO Base - Dropdown boxes

2016-06-29 Thread Bruce Hohl
I have never done this but since it seems your data might fit within a
spreadsheet perhaps you can use the features in View > Tool bars > Form
Controls, Design, Navigation to create an input sheet / form. Then another
sheet(s) for "output" via Data > Filters or Pivot Tables. You might also
be able to use the spreadsheet protection features to keep the "design"
locked down. I would guess this would be OK for 10,000 or fewer records,
could work with up to 100,000 records, but would run into spreadsheet
"practical limits" (performance, stability) beyond that ... in which case
you really would need a database!

Re: [libreoffice-users] change user interface

2016-06-29 Thread Bruce Hohl
"... current user interface look like old office 2003.I need to change the
look like office 2007 or higher."

Firstly, quite a few people do *not* prefer the 'Ribbon' menu system
introduced with MSO 2007. Google Docs features tool bars of icons but I
doubt anyone thinks it seems "old" and certainly Google knows a thing or
two about designing a clean and useable user interface.

In fact, I find LO's interface a great strength. It provides many more
options for accessing features than MSO or Google docs including:

   1. The traditional and very browse-able Text Menu: File, Edit, View,
   Etc.
   2. Tool bars of icons (which can be customized)
   3. A Sidebar (View > Sidebar) which is suspiciously similar to the MSO
   Ribbon :)
   4. Windowed Pallets (Format > Cells, Format > Character, Etc.)
   5. An extensive and easy to use customization feature under Tools >
Customize which allows keyboard shortcuts, custom menus, etc.

Thus, each user can easily adjust the interface to their preference. For
example, I hide all tool bars for maximum screen space and minimum
clutter. I then use Tools > Customize to assign frequently used features
to key combinations (some are assigned by default). More specifically, I
use F11 to insert spreadsheet rows, F12 to delete spreadsheet rows, F8 to
open the Sidebar, Ctrl+1 to open Format > Character, Ctrl+2 to open Format
> Paragraph, Ctrl+3 to open Numbers and Bullets, Etc. These settings can
even be saved to a file. I would say that LO offers the most flexible and
easy to customize user interface of the three.

Re: [libreoffice-users] LO 5.1.4.2 calc consistently crashing on row deletion

Tom,
I just updated to LO 5.1.4.2 from the Ubuntu PPA's on Ubuntu 14.04 (really
LXLE Posh). I checked deleting rows from a few worksheets and encountered
no errors. If you are using Ubuntu or an Ubuntu based OS you might try
getting LO from the PPAs per the links below as these are packaged for
Ubuntu.

Re: [libreoffice-users] How to learn Base & an external database program

2016-06-20 Thread Bruce Hohl
You could review this:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications#LibreOffice_Base_Handbook

If you think an external database is appropriate each will likely have it's
own documentation like this:
http://www.postgresqltutorial.com/

Access is unique. On the plus side the front end offers a great deal of
functionality all within a single file DB. On the minus side the back end
Jet database total size is limited to something like 4GB but you can attach
/ link to other Jet DBs, for some operations the performance can be
absolutely horrible, and file corruptions can be a risk. So Access is
strong on the front side and weak on the back end. Open source options
tend to strong on the back end with DB options like HSQL, MySQL and
PostgeSQL (I don't think SQLite can be used with Base). Base as front end
has fewer features / less polish than Access which may or may not matter
depending on the scope of your needs. You will likely just have to explore
a bit.

[libreoffice-users] sumifs() with wildcard question

2016-06-17 Thread Bruce Hohl
A B
1 aa 1
2 ab 2
3 bb 10
4 bc 10
5 a* 0
Formula in cell B5 =SUMIFS(B1:B4,A1:A4,A5) should return 3 not 0.

Tool > Options > LibreOffice Calc > Calculate
Enable regular expression in formulas is *off* (I don't want regexp for
this worksheet).

I though there was a setting that controls how the * wildcard is
interpreted in Calc.
Can someone please help?

I have only used the LO Scaling feature to increase (on high resolution

menus. I then use the View > Zoom feature for the main worksheet or text

2016-06-12 Thread Bruce Hohl
You could download Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa Xfce, install to USB as bootable,
start your PC with this Live CD. Then open LO to see if the default
setting are OK for you. If so you could look for the difference in
settings or just reinstall. On my 2 (default) installs of LM 17.3 Rosa
Xfce I don't have the small fonts issue ... and I hate small fonts!

Robert,
Thanks for that comment on Evince for Windows. It's "lighter" as in less
cluttered than Sumatra and includes a useful Annotations feature.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Draw

2016-06-06 Thread Bruce Hohl
If you really only want a light/fast PDF *reader* than for Linux try Evince
and for Windows try Sumatra.

If you want some basic PDF tools (not a full PDF editor) than for Linux try
PDFshuffler and for Windows try PDFTK Builder for which you can find a link
on this page: http://www.angusj.com/pdftkb/.

You cite LO as the culprit yet the problem occurred after changing to
Win10. I suggest you verify if the HP driver is at the correct version for
Win10. Maybe use the 'DriverTalent' program to check all your drivers.

As a work-around perhaps you could print to PDF then print the PDF on the

Re: [libreoffice-users] Simple sum in column getting zero in libreoffice calc 5.

2016-05-11 Thread Bruce Hohl
Check cell formats and contents in B2:B8. SUM() will not add numbers
within cells formatted as text or numbers preceded by a half quote. Per
below the sum() result is 4 as such items are not summed.

4 '=SUM(B2:B8)
2 Cell number format with '2 (note the half quote)
3 Cell number format with '3 (note the half quote)
5 Cell formatted as text.
1 Cell number format with 1
1 Cell number format with 1
1 Cell number format with 1
1 Cell number format with 1

Re: [libreoffice-users] Number comparisons in conditional text

2016-05-09 Thread Bruce Hohl
A (more difficult) method to use the age ranges from their own table
(separate from the other data) would be to use a correlated subquery. Then
you could have "cleaner" SQL. You can find examples of this on the web.

OR I think there may be limited support for saving query formatting like
discussed here:
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=39997
but I don't have any experience with how this works or its limitations.

2016-05-08 Thread Bruce Hohl
Gary,
See attached for a working case when in LO Base. You do have to be very
careful when using Base Queries (SQL) that everything is exactly correct
like where commas are placed (or not) and how quotes / half quotes are used
(or not). So setting this up in Base will likely take more time than in
Calc. You will have to judge if the final result in Base is best for your
needs. Good Luck!

Perhaps LO Find & Replace using Regular expressions would work.
Not an LO solution but SED can be useful for such tasks.
Can you post a sample of the file contents?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Number comparisons in conditional text

2016-04-27 Thread Bruce Hohl
Reportedly, as of LO 5.1 you can create a mail merge without a Base file -
reference this: http://vmiklos.hu/blog/mail-merge-embedding.html You might
try to recreate your Certificate mail merge without the Base file being
careful to select cell formats for your data that work with Writer. (If
you have good spreadsheet skills you could likely get the job done entirely
in Calc.)

Another useful tool for this type of clean-up is SED. It can take some

 People,

I need to import a CSV dump from an Android SMS Sqlite DB - the problem
is, many of the SMSs have line breaks in the text body of the DB record
and this messes up the import into Calc. There does not seem to be any
way of saying to Calc: "Count x fields for each record" instead of
 recognising a record by a LF . .

Can anyone think of a nice, easy fix for this problem?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Calc method to change whole column cell content

2016-04-08 Thread Bruce Hohl
Method 1 - Using Value()
Use value() function to convert a text string into a number or date.
Copy the result; paste special as number or date.
---
Method 2 - Search & Replace
Select (highlight) a cell range then:
Using Search & Replace (Ctrl+H):
Search for = .*
Replace = &
Under Other Options:
Y = Current selection only
Y = Regular expressions
Click Replace All

For the csv file Open Calc then open the CSV file from Calc. You can set
you file associations on Windows, Linux, etc. so CSV files are always
opened by Calc.

Re: [libreoffice-users] update

2016-04-02 Thread Bruce Hohl
For Linux Mint your LO install may receive patches (but not version
updates) when you run updates to Linux Mint. Linux Mint can be updated via
an icon in the task bar or the 'Update Manager'. If you are happy with
that version of LO and LM 17.2 then simply keep LM 17.2 updated.

If you move to LM 17.3 the included version of LO is 5.0.3.2. Linux Mint
uses the Ubuntu packages for LO which I've found to include most important
bug fixes and various favorable tweaks to the default settings.

With extra effort you can install and use a newer version from
LibreOffice.org. I do this when I want to use or check out new features:

To Add & Remove LO DEB packages on Linux:
To remove:
1 - user1:/opt$ sudo aptitude remove libreofficeX.X
libreofficeX.X-debian-menus libreofficeX.X-ure
2 - verify complete removal via: user1:/opt$ sudo aptitude search
libreoffice | grep ^i

To add:
1 - Get files from LibreOffice.org
LibreOffice_version_Linux_x86-64_deb.tar.gz
LibreOffice_version_Linux_x86-64_deb_helppack_en-US.tar.gz

2 - Extract each under /opt:
user1@PC:/opt$ sudo tar -zxvf [file1 | file2]

3 - Install program:
user1@PC:/opt/LibreOffice_version_Linux_x86-64_deb/DEBS$ sudo dpkg -i
*.deb
user1@PC:/opt/LibreOffice_version_Linux_x86-64_deb_helppack_en-US/DEBS$
 sudo dpkg -i *.deb

4 - Optionally, delete downloaded and extracted files (but do not delete
the program directory /opt/libreofficeX.X)

A command line approach is not necessary but I use it because it is easy to
show the steps.

Fwd: [libreoffice-users] In 5.1.0.3, where is the "Add Ons" menu?

2016-03-27 Thread Bruce Hohl
And, use Tools > Extension Manager shows the Add-on's install.

Add-on's is under the Tools menu but it may not appear unless you have an
add-on installed which allows user settings. For example my LO 5.1.1.3
install has 5 bundled add-on's plus "History Master" which I added
separately, and only 'History Master' appears under Tools > Add-on's.

[libreoffice-users] OwnCloud link on LO site

2016-03-27 Thread Bruce Hohl
From the home page menu on the LO site: Community > OwnCloud opens
https://owncloud.documentfoundation.org/ which requires a user & password.

Is this a LO OwnCloud demo?
If so, does anyone know how I can get credentials to check it out?
